2019 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Summer is here!

President Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc.

By HBA President Erin DeWeese

The Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa has been busy the last few months! The April General Membership Mixer (GMM) was Associates Appreciation Night. Everyone enjoyed a crazy night of food, trivia competition, and prizes! If you are an Associate member make sure to RSVP for this event next year for a chance to win one of many prizes! Our annual Municipality Round Table was held at the Mike Fretz Event Center on April 16th. This was a very well attended event and a lot of good information was shared from Tulsa and surrounding communities. I would like to recognize our Developer’s Council President, Steve Wright, for his efforts in making this event a success! April continued to be a busy month as the annual Appetite for Construction took place on April 18th at Metro Appliances and More. 2019 Appetite for Construction Chair, Carrie DeWeese, and her committee took this event to yet another level with a record attendance and record fund raising for the HBA Charitable Foundation! This is an event that no one will want to miss next year! The May GMM went old school with great food and some Bingo! Extra Bingo cards were sold to raise money for our local Political Action Committee (HBAPAC). A big thank you to our outstanding HBA Staff for continuing to put on first class GMMs! Tulsa HBA leadership, staff, and several of our members traveled to Washington DC for the 2019 LegCon and Spring Leadership Meeting put on by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Those in attendance spent a day on Capitol Hill speaking with our senators, congressmen, and congresswomen about issues that are critical to our industry. Thank you to our leadership, national directors, members and staff that took time out of their busy schedules to attend this event. The 2019 Greater Tulsa Parade of Homes got off to a fast start with the Parade Kick Off Party on June 11th! Hundreds of people attended,

Vice President/Treasurer Mike Fournier The Sonrise Companies

including a large number of builders and realtors! Early feedback from builders point to another successful Parade as traffic was strong and houses were selling! Four very well attended Twilight Tours were held June 17th-20th at Forest Ridge, Stone Canyon, Winchester Park, and Yorktown. A big shout out to all our builders who provided so many great homes for the public to view! I want to personally recognize the efforts of our 2019 Parade of Homes Chairman, Jeff Starkweather, as well as the 2019 Parade Committee for all their efforts in continuing the strong Parade tradition! If you are a new member trying to figure out how to get the most out of your membership please reach out to myself or any of our outstanding staff so that we can point you in the right direction! Ask about our Ambassadors Program which pairs you up with another member who will work with you one-on-one to figure out how to get the most out of your membership. If you don’t do anything else, please RSVP for the September 26th President’s Reception. It’s a breakfast meeting that goes from 8am-9am and will get you up to speed on everything you need to know to start maximizing your membership. This is also a great opportunity to sign up for the Ambassadors Program. Thank you to every Ambassador for sharing your time and experience with our new members! In closing, everyone needs to mark your calendars for August 13th as we will be hosting a special GMM at the Summit Club! More information will be coming soon. Wishing you success in all your endeavors, Sincerely, Erin DeWeese

Did you know the HBA is hard at work promoting the construction industry to the current and next generation of our workforce? We constantly hear from our members that their jobs are not getting done on time due to the extreme shortage of qualified employees and craftsman in our industry. Well, here is what we are doing and opportunities with how you might be able to help. Our flagship program, Build My Future, was created last year with more than 40 construction vendors showcasing a hands-on experience for 900 high school students. The students were engaged throughout the day with activities like a nail driving contest, brick laying, bridge construction, virtual reality architecture, equipment operation, and sheetrock installation. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive from the students and their instructors so we are upping our game in 2019. On October 3rd we will host more than 1,500 high school students at Build My Future and we are looking for vendors to participate. If you can create a hands-on experience (be creative) for your type of work, then please contact us today to be involved. Thank you to Phillip Parks and Matt Emmons for Co-Chairing the 2019 Build My Future. Earlier this year we partnered with Oklahoma AGC to support the construction competitions at Skills USA. In one day, we saw the best of the best from Career Techs across the state participate in HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, and low voltage competitions. We had the opportunity to host a dinner and breakfast for the 200 participants and provided them with information about the residential construction industry and the opportunity for them to have a successful career. At the end of the Team Works Competition we were able to provide new power tools to all 32 participants to help them get their start in the industry.

HBA member company provides the placement. This program has been recognized by Oklahoma Career Tech as one of the most innovative experiences for connecting the industry to their next work force. Thank you to The Buckingham Group, Capital Homes, J Field Electric, Faith Electric, and Colburn Electric for participating in the 2019 program. We are now in the pilot stages of a program with the Career Techs located in minimal security prisons in Oklahoma. Later this year the HBA Charitable Foundation will be funding 5 graduates and released inmates with up to $1,000 for tools, transportation, or housing deposits as they integrate back into society and our workforce. These individuals are highly trained while they are incarcerated, some of which even earning their journeyman’s license in plumbing or electrical. Given a second chance, the Career Tech program has proven that these individuals can become your best employees within a matter of months.

The request I have from our HBA members is to participate in any or all of these programs. The programs are only successful if we have companies like yours that are willing to continue to hire. Whether it’s a one hour speaking engagement, a one day site visit host, or a one week internship, we need your help and participation. It is a struggle to commit time when you are already This summer we are in the middle of shorthanded, but not committing our Career Tech Instructor Internship time to promote the opportunities for Program. For the second year in a row employment in our industry will only we have placed 2 Career Tech instructors prolong the issue. with HBA member companies so they That’s the Scoop for now, can have the day to day experience of operating a business in our industry. The HBA Charitable Foundation pays a stipend to the instructor and the Jeffrey Smith HOME BUILDING NEWS 2019

A LOOK BACK TO THE PAST: 1958 PARADE OF HOMES Acres that her family has called home for almost 25 years. Her home is the “Whirlpool” built by the McPartland Construction Company and named for the home’s appliance manufacturer, the RCA Whirlpool Corp. In 1958, the Tulsa Home Builders Association celebrated National Home Week with the Parade of Homes. The Parade program was titled “A Report to the People on the best in Modern Living” with 13 Show Houses highlighting the latest innovations in construction techniques, design style, and interior decoration. For nine days in September, the public toured six homes in the 4600 block of South Knoxville/Patrick Henry addition and seven homes in the 3400 block of East 56th Place/Woodland Acres addition. The 1958 Parade was notable for the all-gas or total electric utility service in these two additions. Oklahoma Natural Gas Company provided gas equipment in the Woodland Acres section and electric equipment was provided by Public Service Company of Oklahoma in the Patrick Henry section. This important distinction allowed home buyers to not only compare the homes’ overall comfort and convenience features, but to evaluate the utility service and appliances that best met their family’s needs and budget. The curb appeal of these midcentury homes is still apparent owing to their design simplicity and focal points, but rarely does one get a chance to peek inside. It was a pleasant surprise when Dawn Young contacted the HBA and shared her love of, and appreciation for, a 1958 Parade Show House in Woodland

Wide-open daylight living spaces are builder Bill McPartland’s trademark and that’s evident from the moment you enter this home. Large windows in the living areas and bedrooms invite the outdoors in. The entry hall, family room, kitchen, utility room, and bathrooms all have flooring of wellmaintained, black and white pattern terrazzo. The bathroom’s iridescent tile, plumbing suite, and cabinetry – all original to the home – complement the terrazzo’s simplicity. The family room’s sleek, built-in shelving provides ample display of the family’s books and treasured items. A complete kitchen makeover is the most significant change to the home’s interior and one that emulates the home’s original design, scale, and vibe. It was a privilege to be invited into the Youngs’ home and learn about it from its second owner/ caretaker. It was our pleasure to share the 1958 Parade of Homes

That year, Parade builders in the Patrick Henry addition were Hollis Copeland, Frank Kirk, Jack Thomas, Edmund Sorenson, L.R. “Andy” Latch, and Jim Nuckolls and Charles Gilmore. Today, mid-century modern houses are making a comeback nationwide. Their clean lines, simple shapes, creative materials, and bold colors are characteristic of fun and functional living. Most importantly, these houses contribute to the HBA’s legacy of the beautiful places that countless families now call “home”.

PRO TIPS ON BECOMING AN ALL-STAR MEMBER RECRUITER Member-to-member recruitment and retention efforts are the largest source of growth for NAHB. Recruiting new members to local associations is recognized and rewarded through the Spike Club. Participants are called Spikes, who are among the most valued members of the association.

members who are willing to participate. Increasing memberships — locally, regionally and nationally — gives us the ability to create more services, education and networking benefits to open up channels of business development for all of us. That’s the macro. The micro is you just get to meet really nice people.

Top Spike leader S. Robert August of North Star Synergies, Inc. and the HBA of Metropolitan Denver — with 3,600-plus Spike credits to date — recently shared his engagement tactics and the importance of prospecting with former NAHB Membership Committee Chair Carol Morgan of Denim Marketing to help others recruit additional members to NAHB.

Morgan: Do you have a secret formula for your recruitment success? What’s your best piece of advice? August: If you are zeroing in on a prospect and you think they are ready, willing and able to move forward, then it is critical to follow up and be persistent. Some of those whom I have recruited took over five years to become members. And even after recruiting, while you’re already engaged, you have the opportunity to get them involved as an instant asset. Morgan: How do you identify who is a good candidate to recruit? August: Every company that deals with some aspect of construction should be a member. Specifically, a good candidate is a business that has sufficient resources, and the ability and desire to participate regularly in member events and initiatives. It’s much more time efficient to focus on those who can afford to take full advantage of the organization. Morgan: As a member, it seems you spend a lot of time and resources on recruitment. What can others expect as the payoff if they do the same?

Top Spike leader S. Robert August Morgan: What motivates you to recruit potential members? August: It’s another way to give back to the industry that has been very good to me. The strength of an organization comes from the ability to create vibrant

August: They can expect more closings on their products and services. The more people I met and organizations I got involved in, I not only found an increased number of Spike opportunities, but also more investments in our communities and more business for us. Ultimately, if members give, then they are going to get back.

FOR THE YEAR, AREA HOUSING STARTS TRENDING 8.3% HIGHER THAN IN 2018 Area home construction for the year is 8.3% ahead of the pace set in 2018. A total of 1,259 homes have been started through May 2019, which is 104 more than a year ago, according to data from Tulsa-based New Orders Weekly. “We’re tracking a little bit ahead and that’s what the sentiment’s been in the marketplace,” said Erin DeWeese, president of the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa. “The sentiment’s been positive from all the builders.

MEMBER NEWS

OKLAHOMA HBA MEMBERS IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL

On June 5, members and staff headed to Capitol Hill for appointments with the Oklahoma congressional delegation. United as a team, they met with Rep. Mullin (OK 2nd District) and Rep. Hern (OK 1st District) whose Sen. Inhofe scheduler’s graciously accommodated the large number of HBA members by arranging back-toback meetings in a Longworth HOB conference room. While their meeting with Sen. Inhofe was prematurely cut short due the Senator’s presence required at an unexpected floor vote, HBA members continued their day at meetings with Congressmen Lucas (OK 3rd District) and Cole (OK 4th District), and with Rep. Horn (OK 5th District).

Unity may not be a word often used nowadays in our nation’s capital, but it was the word of the week for more than 700 NAHB members and staff who traveled to Washington, DC for the 2019 Legislative Conference and Spring Board meeting in June. The Oklahoma Home Builders Association, led by 2019 President David Blackburn, was well-represented by members and staff from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Stillwater associations. Their days were packed with leadership, committee, and caucus meetings. At night, they enjoyed some well-deserved R&R at events like Young Professionals After Hours. The YP event was not only an opportunity for networking and refreshments, Rep. Cole David Blackburn, Erin DeWeese, Rusty Appleton, Mike Means, it was an exceptionally successful BUILD-PAC fund L-R: Kurt Dinnes, Connie Stokes (seated), Rep. Tom Cole, Denise Patterson, raising success. Joe Robson, Jeffrey Smith, Mike Fournier, and Dusty Hutchison. At each appointment, NAHB members lobbied for Government-sponsored Enterprise reform, National Flood Insurance reorganization, Workforce Development legislation, ratification of the US-MexicoCanada Agreement, establishment of a minimum LowIncome Housing Credit, and provision for Congressional oversight of building and energy codes. The legislators welcomed the visits from their constituents and most assured members that they were actively supporting these issues and took a proactive role in the region’s flood recovery efforts. 26

MEMBER NEWS This year, Erin DeWeese has simultaneously held two key leadership roles as HBA President and NAHB Young Professionals Committee Chair. While in DC, he lobbied for workforce development legislation addressing the skilled labor shortage in the short-term and led the efforts for industry/career awareness programs like Build My Future to attract the next generation of skilled workers. Nationally and locally, Erin is a BUILD-PAC and HBA-PAC advocate, and a generous contributor to both. During the 2019 Legislative Conference and Spring Board, NAHB committees across the board; Associates, Remodelers, National Sales & Marketing (NSMC), Professional Women in Building Council (PWB), and the Young Professionals (YP) united to fundraise for BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s bipartisan political arm that helps elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to federal office. Throughout the week, committee members sold hundreds of pairs of BUILD-PAC branded socks for a Fair Share Donation of $25.00. While other committee totals are still being compiled, the YP raised over $15,000 for BUILD-PAC with its raffle and sock sales. Fundraising efforts like that will undoubtedly lead to another BUILD-PAC challenge at the HBA. Regardless of the final tally, NAHB leaders are dancing for joy as a result of the Committees’ unified efforts.
