2021 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

President Jeff Starkweather Epic Homes

By HBA President Jeff Starkweather

Vice President/Treasurer Cahn Wiggs Brian D. Wiggs Homes

WHY ARE YOU A MEMBER? Have you ever asked yourself … ”Why am I a member of the Tulsa Home Builders Association?” This is a question that you might have asked yourself in the past. If you haven’t asked yourself this question yet, you probably will in the future. If you are reading this article, you are probably thinking about that question right now. Membership in the Tulsa HBA is what you make it. When I first joined the HBA years ago I just figured it was the thing to do. I had been building homes for a few years and started researching things like Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. I came across the Tulsa Home Builders Association and it obviously looked like a perfect fit. I really didn’t have any huge expectations when I first joined. Our company participated in the Parade of Homes and that was awesome! I spent a few years just hanging around, paying my yearly dues, eating a few meals and meeting a few people. There is nothing wrong with doing that and I wasn’t disappointed at all. It wasn’t until I started attending a couple councils and the Owasso chapter that I realized what I had been missing over my first few years. My company concentrated on building energy efficient homes so I started attending the Builders Council and the Green Building Council on a regular basis. I started learning and networking with other builders and people that had more experience than I did and I started growing in knowledge as a builder. As I continued participating in HBA events I started getting involved in leadership roles and then the executive ladder. Now I’m president and I get to write this article … WOOT! So I ask myself again … “Why am I a member of the Tulsa Home Builders Association?” 1) I am a member because a strong association helps build and secure a strong industry. 2) I am a member because I can build relationships that are fun and good for my business.

Secretary Lora Phillips HBA Life Member 3) I am a member because I really enjoy the General Membership Meetings. 4) I am a member because I like participating in the Parade of Homes. I encourage you to answer the question like I just did. Membership in the Tulsa Home Builders Association is what you make it. If you answer the question of why you are a member you will have the ability to find a fit that will be rewarding and long term. Membership in the Tulsa HBA is more than just paying a yearly due. Membership can be good for your business and can be good for your mental health. You are not alone in your endeavor. The Tulsa Home Builders Association has over 1000 members that are like minded, supportive and want you to succeed.

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith

What is in the water at the HBA? I have heard that question a lot over the last few months and it pertains to the amount of staff change we have experienced, focused highly on pregnancy. The Tulsa HBA has been blessed to have a great staff team for decades and as we transition in new team members, I am confident that the tradition of highly skilled workers with a passion for serving the members will continue. The Covid-19 pandemic forced the reduction of 2 staff members in 2020 including the long-time office manager, Marlena Chase. Marlena served the membership for more than 20 years and was always the smiling face that greeted you when you entered the building or the sparkling voice you recognized when you called the office. Several members still approach me with stories about Marlena would assist them through an issue at the HBA and make their membership and experience and enjoyable one. She has been able to stay at home with her daughter, Ireland, and is now planning to re-enter the workforce. We were also forced to reduce our bookkeeping staff in 2020 and have been diligently maintaining accurate financials with through a teamwork of current staff members. In January of this year, the HBA Special Events Director, Morgan Sikes, welcomed her first baby girl to their family. Morgan and her husband then decided it would be best for their family for Morgan to remain home to raise their child. She had been with the HBA for more than 3 years and had helped all of our special events grow during her tenure. Her pose and patience proved very worthwhile as we produced the 2020 Home and Garden Show during the start of the pandemic. We often see Morgan at the office and she became part of our family and we love to see baby Saylor! I am righting this article on the final day in the office for HBA Public Relations Director, Hali McCoy. Hali is expecting her new son, Seth, sometime in mid-June and has always dreamed of staying home to raise a family. Hali was my first hire at the HBA in February of 2016 and has managed to take over all of the media purchases for the organization, while making the HBA well known within the new community. There is not a week that goes by that one or more media outlets in Tulsa aren’t calling for a quote or full

interview for a news story they are running. Hali has helped elevate the results of our Total Resource Campaign and each of the last 3 years has increased the sales total by over $50,000 from her pre-hire campaigns. I know Hali and her husband will enjoy the birth of their son, and I am so excited for them. With all of this change comes new faces and opportunities. We recently hired Sarah Gentry to serve as the Director of Special Events. Sarah’s first day was May 1st and she has exceeded expectations in her first 30 days. Trying to onboard an Events Director while producing 2 golf tournaments and our Appetite for Construction in the first two weeks did not overwhelm Sarah and I am sure she will continue to do amazing things for our events. Please make sure to stop by and say HI to Sarah when you get a chance. There will be other new faces in the office over the next few months as we continue to grow our staff back in key positions. In the meantime, a special shout out to Membership Director, Pablo Perez, Director of Association Issues, Stacey Bayles, and Mike Fretz Event Center Manager, Caleb Rice for all performing their everyday tasks while filling the gaps caused by so much change.

That’s the Scoop for Now, Jeffrey Smith
