2017 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

President Peter Grant Grant Homes Remodel & Restoration

By HBA President Peter Grant

Greetings HBA members!

Vice President/Treasurer Ryan Farabough Farabough Homes, LLC

Cool temperatures are in the air and the sound of Christmas music is everywhere which means we are deep into the holiday season. The final months of the year offered no respite, however, from the business of association events. November started with the National NAHBR Chair Dan Bawden coming in from Houston to join our Remodelers Council for a special presentation. Mr. Bawden was impressed with not only our Remodelers Council, but newly remodeled facility and entire association. He stated that it was easy for him to understand why Tulsa is a rock star in the eyes of the nation! The HBA Charitable Foundation Board met in November, further defining our strategic plan to establish a $1,000,000 reserve over the course of the next 5 years. This year alone, the foundation has distributed over $100,000 and over the past 5 years, we have given away over $750,000 worth of goods, services, and money to well deserving organizations. This not only is the right thing to do, I believe it does more to build our HBA brand more than any amount of advertising ever could! Thanks to everyone who has participated and contributed to our charitable foundation over the years. Our vacant lot to the east has finally sold and it looks as though we will be closing on the sale in December. This will give us a much-needed capital infusion after the great expense of our recent building renovation as well as provide a more finished look to the entire street. The buyer is a real estate broker and we look forward to having them as neighbors. The 75th Anniversary and Inaugural Gala was great fun and the nostalgic setting of the Mayo Hotel provided the perfect ambiance for reminiscing over the past 75 years and looking at the incredible (and oftentimes hilarious) photos accumulated. Thanks to Lora Phillips, Francine Bandy, Burr Kannady, and Stacey Bayles for working so hard over past months to assemble this fascinating pictorial

Vice President/Secretary Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc. history and to Hali McCoy for designing the commemorative book distributed at the event.

Past President Brandon L. Jackson Tara Custom Homes

Congratulations to this year’s award winners and to Ryan Farabough on his installation as 2018 President of our association. I am confident that Ryan, along with vice presidents Erin DeWeese and Mike Fournier, will do a great job leading our association over the next year.

Membership Chair Weldon Bowman W Design, LLC

This is my last President’s Report for 2017 and I want to let you know how much serving in this role has meant to me. It is hard to believe that the year has almost past. It seems like I was taking my oath of office just a few months ago and yet here we are once again installing our next president. They say, ‘time flies when you are having fun” and I have certainly enjoyed my experience as president of this fine association. The last 3 years on senior leadership has challenged and stretched me both professionally and personally. It has revealed to me both my strengths and weakness’ and will remain a highlight of my professional career. I want to thank all members for allowing me to serve our great association in this capacity.

Associates Council President Stacye Beaver Bank of Oklahoma Mortgage

I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone in the new year!

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith The Holidays are upon us and a new year is just around the corner. I am sure most of you have been busy with holiday parties and finishing up those last minute purchases for Christmas. Here at the HBA we have spent a significant amount of time in the last month planning for 2018, but before we jump the gun on changing the calendar I must show appreciation for what a wonderful year 2017 has been for the Association. As membership continues to hold steady right under 1,000 members, I want to start out by recognizing the 2017 Membership Chair, Weldon Bowman, and all of the members that served on the membership committee. Each month they met to come up with creative ideas to help everyone in recruiting new members, while making personal phone calls to those members that were preparing to lapse. The membership committee was a huge participant in the Ambassador Program and allowed for over 30 new members to be paired with a veteran member to fast trach their networking within the Association. I know as Weldon passes the reigns to 2018 Membership Chair, Allen Jenkins, we will once again surpass the 1,000 member mark. Our events in 2017 continued to support the mission of the Association while providing ample opportunities for the members to network their businesses with one another. The Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show, under the leadership of Chairman John Madden, gave more than 100 members an opportunity to work side by side in the production of the Show, and, more impressively, allowed more than 300 members the opportunity to promote their products and services to the general public. The Greater Tulsa Home and Garden Show is the best show in our region and it couldn’t happen without the entire committee of volunteers. FYI… the 2018 Show is just around the corner and you will receive information regarding volunteering very soon. The Parade of Homes and Home Remodeling Showcase allowed our builder and remodeler members to open the doors to projects they had recently completed. Hundreds of hours were put into the planning of each of those events under the leadership of Parade Chairman Erin DeWeese and Home Remodeling Showcase Chairman Greg Strange and we have heard positive feedback about projects being purchased and contracts being signed.

I would encourage all of our builder members to showcase their products during the 2018 Parade of Homes and Home Remodeling Showcase. Next, and arguably most impressive, were our two philanthropic fundraisers with the HBA Charitable Foundation. The Appetite for Construction, chaired by Carrie DeWeese, saw almost 400 in attendance in April and raised more than $50,000 for the Foundation. Plans are already underway for the 2018 Appetite for Construction event so mark your calendars for April 19th. In the fall the Remodelers Council and Evening of Giving Chairs Jerry and Tana Van Cleave, produced the most successful event since it’s inception when they raised more than $170,000 for Family and Children Services and the HBA Charitable Foundation. Both of these events, their chairpersons, and committees deserve major kudos for the success of the events and the impact the funds raised will have in our community. Finally, our 75th Anniversary Gala and Installation of Officers was completed on December 1st. The event was a joy to attend by all, and what an honor to have 20 Past Presidents and 21 Past Home and Garden Show Chairpersons in attendance. Our new leadership was installed into office including President Ryan Farabough, Treasurer Erin DeWeese, and Secretary Mike Fournier. I know that 2018 will be our most successful year to date and I am excited to be a part of it. Thank you for your support in 2017 and Happy Holidays to all! That’s the scoop for now,

Jeffrey Smith

Housing Starts Still Strong in 2017 2017 has been a great year for housing starts with record numbers in February, March and May! Housing starts for the month of November totaled 174 compared to 216 for November of 2016, according to the permit tracking service New Orders Weekly. Wagoner County (31) topped housing starts in November. Broken Arrow had 29, followed by Tulsa (21) and Jenks (18). In 2017 residential construction, Broken Arrow is first with 464 starts. John Madden Recipient of the 2016 Spirit Award In 1989, the Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa began recognizing builders who made the best use of HBA Associate member companies to complete their homes. The Spirit Award is one of the HBA of Greater Tulsa’s highest honors, as it symbolizes the relationship between the contractor and the subcontractor and how very important it is when building a home to use only qualified craftsmen and suppliers. Each year, many worthy companies enter projects for consideration of this honor, which are then analyzed by an accounting firm to determine which projects involved the greatest percentage of work by HBA Associate members.

Congratulations to 2016 HBA Spirit Award Winner John Madden J. Madden Homes John Madden, owner of J. Madden Homes, was chosen as this year’s Spirit Award honoree in recognition of a 1600 square ft. single-level home designed to be used as an aging in place. 20

2017 Year End Report & Strategic Plan In 2013, the HBA Board of Directors approved a Strategic Plan, a 5-year direction for support, services, and organizational development initiated by the Executive Committee in November 2012. While this plan was not the first strategic plan implemented by the HBA, it presented a comprehensive compilation of the plan and its component parts, and it was a record of decisions reached by the Board of Directors. It was also a reference guide for the association’s goals and objectives, documenting what the end result should be, including milestones. Over the past five years, significant milestones have been achieved in the key issues areas of Membership, Public Relations, Government Affairs, and Operations and Leadership. MEMBERSHIP: In 2016, the HBA came close to achieving the plan goal of 1,000 members, but the plan also addressed membership development and retention. That result was the Ambassador program; established in 2017 to increase member awareness of, and participation in, HBA programs and events with a one-to-one mentoring structure developed to enhance that process and promote member retention. PUBLIC RELATIONS: Over the past five years the Public Relations goal of maintaining Association prominence in the marketplace has evolved into providing information to members and the public through every available media platform. A newly redesigned website is scheduled to launch on January 2, 2018, as a key member resource, participation hub, and marketing machine. Members are encouraged to ‘test drive’ the new website and let staff know your thoughts and opinions. GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS: Historically, the HBA has been an active and credible advocate for residential development and building, but advocacy comes at a cost. This year, 100% of HBA Board of Directors contributed to the HBA PAC, the local political action committee, and in 2018 they will be challenged to contribute to BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s political action committee, which supports pro-housing, pro-business candidates for federal office to ensure that our members’ voices are heard at all levels. OPERATIONS AND LEADERSHIP: Midway through the Plan’s 5-year cycle the goal of optimizing governance and committee structure was sidelined by the HBA’s whole-house renovation project and Paul Kane’s resignation as Executive Vice President/ CEO. Today, the HBA is a state-of-the-art facility with meeting space in the Mike Fretz Event Center, Robson Companies Board Room, Jenkins Companies Business Hub, Arvest Bank Library, and the Arvest Bank Classroom. As for leadership, opportunity knocked at our door when Jeffrey Smith retired as a home builder and accepted the position as the HBA’s 10th Executive Officer. Without a doubt, Jeff was the right person at the right time. Just ask Allen Jenkins! Allen Jenkins, 2015 HBA President, also proved to be the right person at the right time. Allen endured the unforeseen challenges of the building renovation project and the unexpected EO resignation by having the Strategic Plan and its goals as a written guide, and receiving the counsel of his Senior Officers who assisted in avoiding obstacles and revising plans, all while Allen served as Plan Monitor. While Allen was not responsible for completing individual Plan tasks, he was responsible for building a team and establishing a sustainable culture that ensures the Plan is a living document embedded in all Association activities. At their December meeting, the HBA Board of Directors approved a revised Strategic Plan for the next 3-year cycle (2018-2020). We are pleased to announce that Allen Jenkins will continue as Plan Monitor, so be on the lookout for more information about the HBA’s Strategic Plan on our website and in Home Building News, and receiving regular reports at upcoming Board and General Membership meetings. 22

New BlueSpeed AV Office Gains International Attention For Technology Design BlueSpeed AV opened its doors to a stunning new office in The Galley building this year and is already attracting international acclaim for its design from the Lutron Excellence Awards; an award competition that recognizes the world’s best projects using lighting, shading, automation control and more. In receiving the award, BlueSpeed was honored at the national CEDIA conference in San Diego for Best Showrooms inside The Galley building - a reflection of their premier status as a leading technology integrator for business and residential spaces. The BlueSpeed team oversaw the technology plan across the entire Galley building. Apart from BlueSpeed, the office houses three other innovative companies specializing in kitchen design, investments, and software. The building’s vast environmental components are all connected by a streamlined integration of lighting, shades, media, security and automation control - a design that was three years in the making. Simple Control of the Entire Building Savant Automation works hand-in-hand with Lutron and Alexa Voice Control products to manage the whole building. Occupants can use Lutron keypads throughout the building to control TVs, music, volume, temperature, and media. Savant pushes control of all the systems into the keypads, making it the primary portal to enjoy the space. For example, when you enter the building’s auto showroom, you can select multiple scenes from one keypad or use your phone to make changes: • “Event” - The projector comes down, TVs start, pump station and candy shoppe wake up, temperature adjusts, and lights and music go to the exact levels for an event atmosphere. • “Presentation” - With one push, it manipulates 30 light switches to illuminate the car features. • “Away” - Turns off all lights, except those for security, and shuts down AV elements. Performance Lights & Shades Lutron’s Homeworks QS handles the building’s 150+ light loads, and the elegant finish of the 35 Palladiom keypads match the building’s stylish decor. The building runs on LED lights, whether it’s the eye-catching chandelier at the entrance or the assortment of bubble, recessed, rope, tape, accent, or can light features. 30

Shades on the first floor retract beautifully behind a fabric-wrapped trim at the top of the windows. While upstairs you’ll see a sleek pocket in the wall to accommodate the shades when raised. Personalized Entertainment Visitors can test their swing in the state-of-the-art golf room where, with a push of a button, the shades and lighting tune to prime levels for game focus. Play real world-class courses while getting your swing analyzed for optimal performance, and even play a round of blackjack for fun. Enjoy this multipurpose room to watch a movie, listen to great music, or play alongside your favorite golf pro with picture-in-picture viewing. Scalable Landscape Lighting Unique outdoor lighting not only enhances security for the building, but it highlights the beauty of the architecture as well. As the sun goes down lights illuminate to keep pathways safe for staff leaving. All of the fixtures are high-grade and designed to compliment the landscape, withstand harsh environmental elements, and save on energy bills. Better yet, the entire outdoor lighting system is scalable; which allows it to be expanded as needed. Reliable Security There are a series of security triggers that fire if safety issues occur. If there is an alarm, every interior light goes to full bright and the exterior lights flash. In the event of a fire, all lights go dim so you can see through smoke more easily and the HVAC turns off so not to filter smoke through the system. The outdoor lights continuously flash, alerting incoming emergency response services. The building is equipped with over 60 cameras available from any TV or mobile device; giving staff peace-of-mind whether onsite or away.
