2020 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
By HBA President Mike Fournier
President Mike Fournier The Sonrise Companies Vice President/Treasurer Jeff Starkweather Epic Homes
Greetings Friends! Since this is my final letter to you as your 2020 President, it shall serve as a recap; along with a few very special kudo’s. How will you remember 2020? For hundreds of builders, remodeler’s, bankers, materials suppliers, and title companies in our area, it was an all-time best sales record. It was a year of lifestyle variations. Bank lobbies closed, restaurants only offered partial seating, and churches being closed on Easter! Learning to live life with a mask, a spray bottle of alcohol, and working from home was huge. Also, learning to live without (toilet paper) and virtually no entertainment available to help ease the stress. No concerts, no movies, no cruises, only limited sports; and air travel proved even more challenging. 2020 taught us (in case we needed reminding) that life provides constant change, and with change, the need to adapt. It was no different for us here at our great Association. Strapped with financial challenges from a dramatic loss of memberships, and from a Home & Garden Show that left everyone wanting for more, and an upside-down event calendars with many dozens of events shuffled; were all met head-on by the excellent leadership of Jeff Smith, our EO. Thank you Jeff. You are a rock star, and a blessing. Our Budget & Finance team: Lora Phillips, Clark Neely, Chris Hodges, Lana Nelson, Glenn Shaw, Mark Priess, Jeff Starkweather and myself, and our Council President’s team: Amity Edwards, Scott Maddy, Susan Bevard, Carrie DeWeese, and Dana Day, all came together with me for extra meetings and planning sessions to make the changes needed to our reduced budgets and modified event calendars. This allowed our Association to stay viable, stay engaged, focused on advocacy, and providing the best value possible to our members. Thank you team. It was my heartfelt honor to serve with each of you this year. While 100’s of members did not renew their memberships because of virusrelated challenges, we also added 100’s of new members. This as a result of excellent membership drives under the direction of Pablo Perez and Nicole Hopkins. Thank you for your great efforts!
Secretary Lora Phillips HBA Life Member
Highlights: 1) “The Masked Singer” competition in January. So many great compliments about that night. 2) The wonderful job from the Parade of Homes team guided magnificently by Cahn Wiggs. 3) An amazing TRC campaign! Erin DeWeese was spectacular as chairman. His captains: Connell Curren, Susan Burch, Cahn Wiggs, Chris Hodges, and Taylor Allen achieved extraordinary results; just shy of setting a new sales record! 4) When I nearly died from sepsis-shock in April; forever will I be thankful for my HBA friends that prayed for me, and sent me notes of encouragement, and helped to cover my HBA and Sonrise Construction responsibilities in April and May. It sure was good to be back part-time in June! What is our future for the Tulsa Association? Bright. Optimistic. Full of favor. Jeff Starkweather and Cahn Wiggs will both be excellent President’s to lead and guide us for the next few years; while also working with Jeff Smith and his amazing staff. What is my future? To achieve new goals: 1) Join the OKHBA state leadership ladder. 2) Run for Oklahoma State Senate in one of the upcoming terms. 3) Open a Sonrise Construction office in Destin. Serving as your 2020 President was a true pleasure, fun, and fraught with challenges. But I did love it, and will always consider it an honor to have served as your President. Who knows, you might even grant me a mulligan and ask me to do it again! Final kudo’s: A BIG thanks to Jeff Starkweather and Lora Phillips as my fellow Senior Officers. You both were incredibly great to serve with! And thank you to Carrie DeWeese for a remarkable 1st year with our new PWB Council. It truly was a successful “Year of the Woman!” Humbly yours,

HBA MANAGEMENT TEAM

It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating membership accomplishments, enjoying dinner, drinks, and conversation, and making final preparations for the 2020 Home and Garden Show. It also seems like it’s been forever since my kids had a normal school day, or I could enjoy dinner in a restaurant without worrying about who might be coughing around me. So much has changed in 2020 and it feels like as fast as time now travels, it is oh so slow and painful to return to normal. As I approach my 40th birthday next month, I have learned to enjoy more of the little things and garner more patience with the environment around me.

Here are some of the little (and not so little) things that the Tulsa HBA was still able to accomplish in 2020.

Pablo Perez Membership Director pablo@tulsahba.com Caleb Rice Mike Fretz Event Center Manager caleb@tulsahba.com
Maintain a membership of more than 1,000 By April 1, 2020, the senior officers were expecting to see as much as a 20% decrease in membership due to the pandemic. We were able to maintain communication with our members and maintain essential worker status for everyone in our industry. We held 2 very successful membership drives that brough in more than 90 new members to the association and we quickly began offering much needed networking events in June to provide the benefits our members were looking for. The efforts of the membership committee, under the lead of Chairwoman Nicole Hopkins, has been commendable.
more to make sure that every event in 2020 was held with the exception of Build My Future and Appetite for Construction. More than 50 in person events held during the pandemic to provide our members with the opportunity to network and grow their business. Thank you to all of our committee chairs and their committees for going the extra mile in planning events in 2020. We now look forward to 2021 with increased optimism (all except for the turning 40 part) and the hope that by late spring or early summer we might once again be able to give someone a hug, fill our plate from a buffet line, and see friends have been in isolation for 9 months. Be patient, things will be normal again. I told my staff on March 17th that there is always good that comes out of bad situations. It is upon everyone to make the best of every situation. I can proudly say that the members of the Tulsa HBA have made so much good happen during a bad situation and we will rise from this stronger than ever before.

With no events for 2.5 months and a perceived loss of value in early sponsorships, we quickly regrouped to provide additional benefits to all of our 2020 sponsors. The effort was well received and appreciated from our sponsors and led to another successful sponsorship campaign in October of 2020. Host the majority of events I was on a phone call recently with other EOs from around the country and approximately half of them have yet to reopen their office or host an in-person event since March 15th. We began hosting in person events in June all while maintaining the safest environment we could provide our guests. We have planned, replanned, postponed, restructured, combined, and planned some

REMODELER’S COUNCIL
2020 YEAR IN REVIEW
2020 was a challenging year for the Tulsa HBA of our association’s finest examples of our member’s Remodelers Council due to the COVID-19 pandemic. generosity. However, there were many things to be very excited I personally want to thank all our council members, about for this year and look forward to an even brighter 2021. This year’s Remodelers Council Meetings included the usual open bar and catered dinners. 2020 programing included showroom tours of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery and Eurocraft Granite and Marble. Both of these tours had a very high attendance and highly satisfied council members. Programming also included informational and educational presentations designed to help all members grow their business and realize greater profits. In October we had a successful call drive and signed leadership and Tulsa HBA staff, who made this year’s up 16 new Remodeler Council Members and two new events possible and helping make the Remodelers HBA Members. BUILD-PAC
2020 BUILD-PAC GOLF TOURNAMENT Pandemic safety protocols were already well established by Forest Ridge golf professionals for tournament play, meals and awards at the HBA’s 2020 BUILD-PAC Golf Tournament on October 19. What players and sponsors didn’t anticipate was unseasonably cold temperature and wind chills that caused several players to exchange Bermuda shorts and ball caps for fleece-lined pants and knit caps. As a result, tournament play was as brisk as the north wind with players receiving a to-go lunch as they dropped off their scorecards and the tournament
winners receiving cash prizes later that afternoon. Tournament - 1st Place Kenny Barth Dennis Fries Jim Whorton Craig Cosgrove Tournament - 2nd Place Eric Elias
The HBA’s annual BUILD-PAC Golf Tournament is one of almost 100 fundraising events across the country that raise funds for NAHB’s bipartisan political action committee that helps elect pro-housing, pro-business candidate to federal office. During the 2019-2020 election cycle, BUILD-PAC contributed to 355 U.S. congressional candidates and was effective in over 100 competitive races. Your participation in the annual BUILD-PAC golf tournament and your individual contributions ensure that practical solutions to issues such as housing affordability remain a top priority with elected officials. It’s important for HBA members to be engaged in every step of the political process, but one of the most important ways for NAHB’s voice to be heard is through your annual BUILD-PAC contribution. This year, especially, please join us in expressing our sincere appreciation to the following BUILD-PAC sponsors:

HBA Ryal School
Tradition
THE JOY YOU GIVE TO OTHERS IS THE JOY THAT COMES BACK TO YOU
Unfortunately, the 2020 Ryal School Christmas Party scheduled on December 10 was a casualty of the coronavirus, but the generosity of HBA sponsors has made Christmas bright for 63 Ryal students now restricted to distance learning as a result of an increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases affecting school district families.
In 2020, toys and gifts for Ryal students were transported direct to students in Henryetta. Toys were specifically selected for Pre-K to 8th grade students that support science, technology, engineering, and science (STEM) learning concepts and building skills outside of the classroom. Distance learning provides teachers with the opportunity to assist students in Even before classes were restricted to distance learning thinking of new and interesting ways to the HBA knew that the Christmas celebration would learn while at play. Ryal students also continue. Following discussions with Ryal administrators received a zip-up jacket in their school and faculty, however, it became evident that transporting colors (blue/white) embroidered with students to and from Tulsa, and shopping and gathering the school logo. with HBA members during the pandemic was ill-advised. As a result, the HBA looked to its past for direction. The jackets were so appealing to Ryal faculty members that they, too, purchased jackets in a show of school pride to students and the community-at-large. Student gift and jacket distribution began on December 15. While this certainly wasn’t the ideal way to celebrate the annual event that so many HBA members consider the kick-off to the Christmas season, it was a reasonable solution to an impossible situation. With the promise of a vaccine now available, our plans are to host a celebratory pizza party for students at their school when advisable so that this Ryal tradition continues. Everyone knows that Santa Claus loads his sleigh with toys and gifts for children. Once upon a time, HBA’s own Santa Claus, Olen Creekmore, delivered a truckload of bicycles to Ryal students in Henryetta. Coats and jackets are a seasonal necessity and have been a gift selection
purchased for many students at J. C. Penney or WalMart. 26
