2018 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

PRESIDENT’S REPORT By HBA President Ryan Farabough The Tulsa housing market is one of the most exciting in the nation, as growth and housing starts are up, and cost of living is down. It is truly exciting to see all of the new homes and developments that are going up all over our metro area. But this growth is not without challenges and the HBA continues to advocate strongly for the industry locally as well as nationally. Earlier this year, we were able to achieve a victory for homeowners in the City of Tulsa through negotiating with the city to allow homeowners to have the wider driveways that today’s buyers want and expect. Without the HBA’s involvement, the city would have been able to effectively eliminate the 3-car driveway. Just as soon as we resolved that issue, the City of Tulsa has again decided to impose a solution to a problem that did not exist by beginning to require builders to post a $5,000 bond to get a permit for building a driveway and requiring multiple additional inspections. Such actions by the city serve to drive costs up both for builders and consumers and add additional unnecessary complications to the process. I am proud to be able to report that our association stands ready to defend our industry against these and other attempts of governmental and regulatory overreach that can hurt both our members and their clients. Advocacy for our industry is a great strength of our association, and we are able to be such a strong advocate through the strength of our members. Though fall is coming, things are not slowing down here at the HBA. We have had a full roster of events happening with more to come. We just completed the Home Remodeling Showcase September 15th& 16th. This year’s Showcase was chaired by Ed Kaplan and featured eight homes remodeled by members of our Remodeler’s Council, which is repeatedly recognized as one of the top in the nation. Following the Home Remodeling Showcase, we held our annual Evening of Giving gala on September 20th. This event gives our HBA Charitable Foundation the chance to partner with a local charity to help raise money for the cause. Our charity partner this year was Revitalize T-Town. Our Co-Chairs Jerry and Tana Van Cleave knocked it out of the park, creating a fun evening for all as well as raising thousands of dollars for charitable work in Tulsa. We are well into what may be one of the most successful Total Resource Campaigns ever! Peter Grant and our amazing group of volunteers set an audacious goal and are working hard to hit their target. The Total resource Campaign is the one time each year when we ask for sponsorships to help fund our association and to give our members a chance to partner with us in promoting themselves as well.

President Ryan Farabough Farabough Homes, LLC Vice President/Treasurer Erin DeWeese Brian D. Wiggs Homes, Inc. Vice President/Secretary Mike Fournier The Sonrise Companies If you are looking for an excellent advertising opportunity or want to support our association, then connect with one of our volunteers today. Don’t delay, opportunities are limited. As many of you realize, the demand for qualified, skilled labor has never been higher and most industries are reporting a lack of candidates to fill open positions. Our future workforce must be developed and this is not something that can be done overnight. The HBA has identified this as a key issue and is taking the lead to address it by holding the first of what we hope will be many Build My Future events this October 25th. It will be held at he Tulsa Tech RIverside campus. We are still accepting sponsorships for this exciting event so if you want to participate please get in touch with Jeffrey Smith. As leaders in the industry, it is truly exciting that the HBA is taking the lead with this new opportunity. I know I am preaching to the choir here when I say that there are so many benefits to an HBA membership but it still rings true. Our members benefit financially through discount programs, socially through our many networking opportunities, and professionally from numerous educationally opportunities as well. This October both the Tulsa HBA and the NAHB will be offering plenty of incentives for new members to join the HBA. I want to personally encourage all of you to reach out to those you work with who are not members and share with them the opportunities available to them by join our HBA. My year of leadership is rapidly drawing to a close and we will soon be installing Erin DeWeese as your 2019 President at our annual gala on December 7th at the River Spirit Casino. This is going to be an amazing time, so be on the lookout for your invitation in the mail. Until then, as always, I remain in your service, and if I can be of help in any way, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith October is National work force development month across the United States. As we have heard from many of you about the delays in construction due to the labor shortage, we are taking the next step to recruit individuals to begin their career in the construction industry. If you have not heard or seen my calls to action over the last several months, then I hope now is the time for you to get involved. The Tulsa HBA will produce our first annual Build My Future event on October 25th and I would ask for your involvement in student sponsorship, volunteering, or becoming a vendor. With more than 1,600 high school students in attendance our projected cost for the event is $35,000. That is less than $22 per student and we will provide them with transportation to and from the event, t-shirt, swag bag, lunch, and a once in a lifetime experience. We are asking you to sponsor one or more students at $25 each. As of October 8th, we have 1,200 students sponsored so we are getting close to our goal. There are larger corporate sponsorships available and Stacey Bayles or myself would be happy to present those to you. $25 is a small investment in a student’s future and the possibility of closing the gap on our labor shortage. As you can imagine, the number of students in attendance will require dozens of volunteers. We will begin set up on the afternoon of the 24th, be on site from 6:00am10:00pm on October 25th, and complete tear down by noon on October 26th. There are several ways you can volunteer and our volunteer coordinator, Tana VanCleave, would be happy to find the right area for you. The majority of our volunteers will be floating mentors for the students. We want dozens of construction professional on site to have casual conversations with the students and encourage them to participate in each of the activities. If there is a spark in the conversation about a particular field of construction the mentor can help them enroll in Tulsa Tech courses for the 2019-2020 school year. If you would like to help and need the volunteer registration form, please call the office and we will send you a copy. Finally, if you have a construction company and can provide a hands-on experience we need your help. We partner with Tulsa Tech programming on the fields of carpentry,

HVAC, electrical, low voltage wiring, welding, plumbing, drafting, masonry, and truck driving. Each of these programs has a direct impact on the industry and how efficiently a project can be completed. We are still looking for a handful of vendors to complete the activities for the day and would encourage you to take a day off of work to have such a large impact on the future of our industry. There is no cost to be a vendor and we have several supplier companies that are willing to donate any materials needed for the required hands on activity. Build My Future will just be one day per year and October is the only Careers in Construction month, but we will continue to promote our industry to the next generation throughout the year. If you feel a calling to help the next generation of the construction industry please contact me so we can add you to our speaker’s bureau and activities that we produce in local high schools, Tulsa Tech, OSU-IT, and OSU Stillwater. We have found that students are eager to listen when we can provide such a promising future, but the impact is event greater when a construction company entrepreneur tells their story. Thank you to those that have already made contributions to our Build My Future campaign and to the volunteers that have been planning this event since January. Event chairs Brandon L. Jackson and Tana VanCleave and their committee have done a masterful job in planning such an important event.

That’s the scoop for now, Jeffrey Smith

Oklahoma State - Leading Edge of Learning In September, OSU’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) dedicated its state-of-the-art undergraduate laboratory facility: ENDEAVOR. HBA CHARITABLE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: THE EVENING OF GIVING On Thursday, October 4th, the Home Builders Association Remodelers Council and the Home Builders Association Charitable Foundation presented Revitalize T-Town , with a check for $41,856.50. Funds were raised at the annual Evening of Giving Gala presented by the HBA Remodelers Council. Each year the HBA Charitable Foundation & Remodelers Council support a local charity focused on housing and education to further our mission to make our

community a better place. This year, Revitalize T-Town was chosen as the beneficiary due to their mission to provide safe and affordable housing to low-income homeowners. The money raised at the event will go towards helping the 177 homeowners waiting on repairs that will impact their livelihood. The Evening of Giving event itself raised $83,713 after expenses. $41,856.50 will also be split with the HBA Charitable Foundation to be used to support other local charities with a similar mission. Thank you to our amazing committee & Remodeler’s Council who worked hard to make this event a success. Special thank you to Jerry and Tana Van Cleave, chairs of the 2018 Evening of Giving for their leadership.

“We were so honored to partner with Revitalize T-Town to help provide support and financial resources to such a worthy organization,” said Jerry and Tana Van Cleave, Chairs of the Evening of Giving gala. The HBA looks forward to another amazing year in 2019!

Thank you to our incredible Evening of Giving Sponsors who made this roof repair possible!

OSHBA WINS ASSOCIATION EXCELLENCE AWARD LONG BEACH – The Oklahoma State Home Builders Association (OSHBA) recently received an Award of Excellence in the following category from the Executive Officers Council (EOC) of the National Association of Home Builders: Best Service Provided by State Association or Local Association. Awards were presented during the annual National Association of Home Builders’ 2018 Association Management Conference held in Long Beach, Calif. The council’s membership consists of the staff executives who manage the more than 700 state and local home builders associations that comprise the National Association of Home Builders. “Winning an Association Excellence Award is a great honor,” said Eric Person, president of the Executive Officers Council and CEO of the Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Central Connecticut. “Each award recognizes the outstanding effort, commitment, and achievement our home building associations and their membership make to further the value and importance of their organization.”

The winning entries will be available in the AEA Awards Directory to help other executives and associations across the country provide better service to members and their community. The Oklahoma State Home Builders Association represents home builders and associates in the housing industry throughout the state area. “I am proud to be recognized by the NAHB Executive Officers Council with the Association Excellence Award for Best Service Provided by a State or Local Association.” Said Mike Means, Executive Officer of OSHBA. “They recognized our efforts on behalf of our locals and to be recognized by our peers is an honor.”
