Another pair of hands is always invaluable at these events, so if you would like to help this friendly bunch in any way at all – either on the day itself, or with set up and clear up – please ring Jim Kenyon on 07711 316 013.

Get involved and have fun! Summer Childcare Most staff working for St Pauls Church Childcare Services are, as usual, looking forward to the long school Summer holidays this year as it's a chance for them to recharge their batteries and take a well earned break from the day to day running of the nursery, breakfast and after school clubs which operate term time only through out the year. However some staff have agreed to continue to work on through the holiday period for a few weeks longer in order that childcare may be provided for an additional 4 weeks. For the first 4 weeks of the school Summer holidays (Monday 22 July to Friday 16 August) 16 children from the ages of 3 - 8 will be able to attend any number of hours from 8.30am until 4.30pm on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays at a cost of £4 per hour. There will be a range of age appropriate activities on offer each day which will led by fully qualified staff. Every Wednesday another new venture also starts out this summer. Picnic, Play and Stay will take place at the Community Centre from Noon until 3pm and will be an opportunity for pre-school children and their families to come along and use the facilities at a cost of £2 per family. For further details please contact karenb@stpaulshereford.org.uk.

During the Hereford Rail Male Voice Choir's recent successful concert tour in Cornwall members were asked if the two choirs could join forces on Sept 22nd as the Imerys Choir will be visiting Hereford following its performance in Birmingham the previous evening. The Rail Choir was delighted to agree and St Paul's Church seemed to be the obvious venue as the Choir has many followers in Tupsley. Although entry to the Concert will be free there will be a retiring collection for St. Paul's Church.

It promises to be a special occasion!

Choristers WANTED at St Paul’s Church St Paul’s Church has appointed a new Director of Music, Jon Weller, starting in July 2013. Jon was delighted to inform Tupsley Voice that, starting in September he will coach and develop a new child and adult choir at St Paul’s church, which he plans eventually to be a robed choir. He hopes to build on the links already in place with St Paul's CE Primary and Bishops Schools, and also build on links with other schools. Rehearsals will take place on a Thursday evening in the church between 6.30 and 7.30 pm. for children - boys and girls aged between 7 and 16. Those over the age of 16 who are interested in joining the church choir will rehearse between 7.00 and 8.00 (with a half-hour overlap). The first rehearsal of the term is September 5th and he would encourage anyone who thinks they might be interested to come along for that rehearsal. Parents are warmly invited to stay in the church to listen and see what goes on. The new church choir will have 3 rehearsals before its first performance on Sunday 22 September. It will then lead the singing in church every Sunday, singing the communion setting, hymns and occasionally an anthem.

If anyone has any questions about the choir, do not hesitate to get in touch with Jon via email jonweller@stpaulshereford.org.uk

Twenty nine Spanish students aged between 12 and 14 years old enjoyed trips to the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff, Cadbury World and The Bull Ring and Big Pit amongst other places, whilst learning more about British culture and practising their English. Students commented about how well they were looked after by their host families and we are very grateful to all of them for making these youngsters feel so welcome. Our Bishop’s students are already looking forward to taking part in the return leg of the exchange in October. This trip has been running for over 15 years and it’s a great opportunity for our students to learn more about Spanish language and culture in the beautiful setting of the school ‘Colegio villa de Griñón’, close to the Spanish capital Madrid.

Also present were the Mayor of Hereford, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, reporters, volunteers, church members and many other interested people. The Centre has been operating since February after moving from the Bishops Palace under the leadership of Jackie Boyse, the officer for Social Responsibility in our diocese. The Bishop said that sadly there was a great need in our city and throughout the whole country for help to families and individuals without money available to buy food. The problem was going to become worse. He thanked everyone from churches and as individuals who were contributing to this worthy cause.

2013 started with a talk on the Martha Trust, and in particular the new Sophie House, Holly Well Gutter Lane, which will provide even better facilities for more people. Some members even visited the new unit on a later date. The many interesting meetings since have included a talk by Glyn Johnson when he told them of many hilarious circumstances during his time working at the BBC when things had gone very wrong at the studios when on air. Other meetings had subjects which included a talk on the River Wye from its source to Hereford, correspondence from a submariner who was killed during the siege of Malta during World War 2, setting up a smallholding to raise sheep after retirement, and growing and propagating Fushias. Our local Tupsley Butcher, Jonathon Heggie also spoke at one meeting about the various cuts of meat and how best to cook them.

Bishops: Stunning Sporting Success The 2012-2013 season has been another stunning success for Bishop's sport. In one 2 week period this year the school won 13 trophies! These included Tom Hutchinson's spectacular gold medal in the National Junior Indoor Rowing Competition, the Under 14 rugby 7s team winning 3 trophies. In the same period the school's U12 and U16 girl footballers were Herefordshire County Champions. The Hereford Times (in May) stated that, "Bishops has cemented its position as the leading sporting school in the county." The girls have had a fabulous season. The U16 Girls' Football team progressed to be runners up in the National Schools final. This was one of many successes for girls sport at Bishops. The girls U13 team are the County Indoor Cricket Champions, the Cheer Leading Squad participated in the National Championship, Echo Callaghan was national champion for octopull and quad rowing in her age group. Emily Leach was 4th nationally in rowing. The school is especially pleased about boys and girls rowing successes because this is a new targeted sport for the school as an alternative to team games. Lucy Pincus is the National Junior dressage champion and has had frequent write-ups in Horse and Hound magazine. Remember her name - she is likely to make the national squad one day! Harriet Aldous-Fountayne, Year 7, has achieved 10 national qualifying times and has been ranked number one Great Britain swimmer in her age group - a first for Hereford. Charlie Gower has been selected for the England U14 rounders team. Honor Lewis is the Welsh National Indoor Rowing Champion - she is, of course, English. This is the tip of the iceberg of girls' sport. Increasingly large numbers of girls see the benefits of being physically active and turn out for school teams and clubs in their own time. The boys have also had another fantastic season. As Mike Stubbs, Head of PE, is renowned for saying, "It's all about practise, practise and practise!" The U16 Rugby team is the County 7s Champions - they scored 251 points and conceded none! The U14s (who are County 7s, 15s champions) reached the State School Cup losing to Northampton School for Boys 17-15 in the final. The U15 won the prestigious Llandovery 7s tournament which featured the best rugby schools in Wales. The boys Kielder team won the West Midlands MLD tag rugby tournament. In addition to the rowing successes mentioned above; Toby Woods won gold in the Welsh Indoor Championships, silver in the English Championships and bronze in the National schools. Ed Bennion won gold in the English and bronze in the Welsh Championships. Jonathan Whiting won a bronze in the English Indoor Rowing. Bishops students are also the U14 boys basketball champions and losing U16 finalists. The school is very proud of the students' sporting achievements and value the hardwork and dediction of its PE Staff and coaches, who along with parent supporters willing give up a great deal of their spare time. Educational research demonstrates that high sporting prowess is a key component of academic achievement

Central Tupsley Community Group Receive £500 In May several members of Central Tupsley Community Group, which includes Tupsley Councillor Jim Kenyon, were awarded £500 by the city mayor towards the cost of further improvements to Tupsley Quarry.

Funding Secured for Tupsley Quarry improvements Hampton Park Church Open Day Central Tuspley Community Group of volunteers are celebrating securing funding of £41,519, towards improvements being made to Tupsley Quarry, including resurfacing the footpaths, installing a handrail and two self-closing gates.

They obtained grants of £7,000 from Hereford City Council’s Community Grants Scheme and £34,519 from The Veolia Environmental Trust. Crucially, the award from Hereford City Council provided the match funding necessary to apply to The Veolia Environmental Trust. The grant of £34,519 was awarded by their Board at its recent quarterly meeting, where it awarded a total of £1.2m to 47 projects across the UK - to community and environmental projects through the Landfill Communities Fund. The Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, McNabb Laurie, adds, “Projects like this one make a real difference to our communities and our Board awarded this grant on its merits. We have been working with Central Tuspley Community Group to develop this project, which we hope will really benefit the local community.”

A Royal Day Out Tupsley residents Dennis and Cynthia Isaac were privileged to receive an invitation to the Service at Westminster Abbey on 4th June to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation of her Majesty the Queen. Each of the Lords-Lieutenant in the Country was invited to nominate representatives from their respective counties to attend the Service. The Countess of Darnley J.P. (Lady Darnley) Lord-Lieutenant of Herefordshire nominated Dennis and Cynthia as one of three couples from Herefordshire. The invitation was in recognition of the 27 years that Dennis gave service as a Magistrate in Herefordshire, including 3 years as Chairman of the Bench and of much work that he has done associated with disability issues.

Dennis said: “Clearly this was a tremendous privilege and we felt deeply honoured to be among the 2000 people who attended the Service. We are thrilled to have experienced this memorable occasion.”
