What A Weekend!

Tupsley’s Bonfire & Firework Extravaganza It was a dark and stormy night – but on November 5th Tupsley Quarry was alive with the sound of literally thousands of mainly Tupsley revellers enjoying a wonderful Bonfire Night Party. There was a competition for the best guy, a huge bonfire and a fabulous firework display. Drinks and burgers were on sale; Wizard Wonky was helping to keep the children entertained with balloon sculptures; mobility scooters were on hand for those unable to walk across the grass and a superb time was had by all.

Generous donations collected in buckets on the night will be used towards other projects in the Tupsley area.

It was all organised by Central Tupsley Community Group enthusiastically led by Jim Kenyon, and made possible with the help of dozens of local Tupsley volunteers. The event was hosted free, with all its costs covered by the very generous sponsorship of works on the Quarry by Tudors Building Supplies.

Some residents said that they had found following the build up to the event on the group’s Facebook page and the radio quite exciting. Over 150 new people have joined the page and afterwards it was flooded with positive comments from local residents. Amongst the many posts, Alicia Lawrence, wrote, ‘Fantastic fireworks, me and my boys loved it, big thank you to all the organisers’ Julie Teague Hill , wrote, ‘Had an amazing time last night. A huge bonfire, and a fabulous fireworks display. Thank you to all you great guys who made it possible. Hopefully it will become an annual event for Tupsley’ and Sheila Holley, wrote, ‘It was a brilliant night! Fantastic atmosphere! Well done all!’

Hampton Park Church Celebrates 44 Years

New Garden for St Paul’s School

On December 8th Hampton Park Church will celebrate 44 years of worship and serving in the community of Tupsley. At the 10:30am service on that day the Dean of Hereford, Rev. Michael Tavinor will be the preacher.

Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) have recently started a garden program with St. Paul’s school. The community group have paid to have old trees removed and the new gardens rotorvated early in November. There will be a volunteer day for both Group members and parents in the near future to re-establish the paths and build a raised garden with fruit trees and wild flowers. The school will then be working hard to try and obtain a “District in Bloom” award from the Royal Horticultural Society next year.

Annual Fair Trade Day Saturday March 8th will be Tupsley’s annual FAIR TRADE DAY; this year to be held at Hampton Park Church. Watch out for further details nearer the time.

The Group are very grateful to the young people from Close House whose help was invaluable in keeping the pumpkins lit and clearing up afterwards. They are also grateful to local photographer, Martyn Duggan, who gave up his time to take photographs (one of which accompanies this article), and which have been uploaded to the Groups’ Facebook page. The winners of the guy competition were delightfully the residents of Aston House, Hampton Park Road. Their prize was received with a bang, quite literally, as the winners had the pleasure of starting the firework display. If you would like to volunteer to help at next year’s ‘Picnic on the Park’, ‘Firework Display’ or any other events the group are hosting, please look out for volunteer appeals prior to the events. If you would like to join the committee or just help, please contact Jim Kenyon on 07711 316013.

About 200 people came to the first ever ‘Open Day’ at Hampton Park Church in September and were entertained by Scottish Dancers, Ballroom Dancers, a demonstration of Zumba and Tai Chi, and a display by ballet dancers. These groups, together with many others who regularly use the church for their activities, provided displays of their work, and talked to people interested to know more. Together with displays by local artists and a soup lunch a good time was had by all! At the Harvest Festival Service the next day a speaker from Christian Aid talked of their work, focussing on the growing of Brazil nuts in South America and the urgent need preserve the endangered rain forest. A generous donation was sent to Christian Aid, and local Care Homes, and the Community Larder also benefitted from the food donated to the Harvest display. A memorable weekend for those who attended.

Hereford College Catering student Demonstrates at Flavours of Herefordshire Festival At the start of this year’s autumn term, Herefordshire & Ludlow College (Previously Herefordshire Technical College, Folly Lane) hosted the ‘Young Chef in Education Award’ for the ‘Flavours of Herefordshire Festival 2013’. Students produced a starter and a main in a set time and were judged by industry experts. There was one runner-up, Ben Dean and one winner Sophie Roberts.

As part of her prize, Sophie performed a cooking demonstration in the Orchard Marquee on the Flavours of Herefordshire Festival weekend supported by her Course Tutor Stuart Leggett who is keen to encourage students to become involved in competitions. “It’s great for students to be thinking independently and create their own menus. Sophie continues to go from strength to strength and this experience will continue to develop her skills.”

For a starter Sophie produced tea smoked salmon with poached apple, glazed beetroot and black pepper crème fraiche. Her main was local pork fillet wrapped in bacon with spinach and celeriac puree served with fondant potatoes and a balsamic jus. Sophie did incredibly well in front of an audience especially with the pressure of radio microphones and cameras. At the end of the demo Sir Ben Gill presented Sophie with a table for four at the Bell at Skenfrith and a set of chef whites. “I’m really happy to have won.” said Sophie. “I did enjoy the demo but I was really nervous. I felt by the end that I was starting to get the hang of talking on the mic!” Supporting Sophie at the event was the team of chefs from the Castle House in Hereford, where Sophie works as a Commis Chef. Head Chef, Claire Nicholls commented, “Sophie did really well. It is so nerve-wracking performing in front of a crowd. She is a good student and has the right attitude to work, professionalism, an understanding of the industry and good time management. She is still building her confidence but her skills are all there.” Why not sample all the students creations at the Cider Orchard Restaurant at Herefordshire & Ludlow College, Folly Lane. www.hlcollege.ac.uk/College/restaurant.html or call 01432 365331 for reservations.

Problem Parking - Police Advice The Hereford City Northside Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) have informed Tupsley Voice that problem parking in Tupsley is a major issue at the moment and have asked that we publish the guidance below taken from their October 2013 Newsletter:We know that people parking poorly is one of your biggest concerns - whether it’s someone who is blocking your driveway with an inconsiderately parked car or a vehicle causing traffic disruption when illegally left on double yellow lines.

Parking Myths Myth 1 - It’s ok to park on double yellow lines if it’s only for a few minutes. Not true. Unless you have a disabled parking permit you are not permitted to park on double yellow lines at any time and the restrictions apply 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are a very few exceptions to this and there will be signs to indicate times/ dates where it may be permitted. You could face a fine of £30 if you park illegally or you could even have your car towed away.

Myth 2 - I’m parked on a grass verge, so I should be ok. Again, this is not always true. Vehicles

Myth 3 - I’ve only parked on the pavement to leave more room on the road. Parking a vehicle on the pavement could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed. This could result in a fixed penalty notice being issued to offending vehicles. It can also cause danger/nuisance for pedestrians and wheelchairs users.

Myth 4 - I’m dropping off my kids to school, so it’s ok to park on the zig-zig lines outside. If you park on zig-zag lines, you could be committing an offence of obstruction, be liable for a £30 parking fine and even have your vehicle impounded, which will then cost a further £150 to release. Please park considerately when dropping off children at schools. Hereford City Northside Safer Neighbourhood Team (Tupsley’s local police team)

Two RHS Awards for Tupsley On Thursday September 19th 2013, Carol Teasdale travelled to Birmingham with the Hereford Town Clerk and Cllr Charles Nichols, to attend the Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom Awards Ceremony and receive Awards on behalf of the Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) and the North Tupsley Action Group (NTAG). CTCG won for Tupsley a Level 4 “Thriving” award for the “It’s Your Neighbourhood” category. The judge was very impressed with the achievements of the Group, which has carried out much work to improve the Quarry Park and surrounding area.

cannot park, either fully or partly, on council owned grass verges. Often there are local bye laws in place to prevent this, due to the damage vehicles can cause to grass or the need to keep access to properties clear. If the land is privately owned and the landowner gives permission, then you may be able to park on a grass verge lawfully.

The judge wrote “It is awesome what has been achieved thus far - 17 acres of green and pleasant land for all ages

to enjoy, respected and valued by residents of Central Tupsley”. Points that she noted included the lack of litter and dog fouling, new pathways to create access for all, flower beds and the encouragement of volunteers. The ‘North Tupsley Action Group (NTAG)’ also won an ‘Improving Award’. The areas of achievement by NTAG in North Tupsley noted by the judge included the addressing of anti-social behaviour through the rapid reporting of incidents, working with Community Police Officers and other organisations, its development of a sense of identity and civic pride, its involvement with the Whitehouse Project and a general lack of litter in North Tupsley.

Tupsley Resident Is Our New Councillor

Changes to Local Policing in Tupsley

The Tupsley by-election was held on November 7th and It’s Our County group’s Cath North was elected as a Herefordshire, and also a Hereford City, Councillor for the Tupsley Ward.

From 30 September 2013, the delivery of local policing services serving 745,000 households across Warwickshire and West Mercia has changed. As a result of the Government’s comprehensive Spending Review the forces are required to identify £30.3 million in savings by 2015. The new policing model is designed to deliver the maximum protection possible to communities throughout Warwickshire and West Mercia.

Results were as follows: Herefordshire Council: Liberal Democrats (277 votes) Local Conservatives (347) It’s Our County (Cath North) (987) Hereford City Council: Liberal Democrats (273 votes) Local conservatives (300) Its Our County (Cath North) (1037)

Photo: A very tired but happy Cath North with Councillor Jim Kenyon following her Tupsley By-election successes

Cath North was born in South Wales but moved to Hereford in 2008 and has lived in Tupsley with her husband and 2 young sons since 2009. She co-founded the Wellies Action Group, to renovate the play area at Wellington Place and is the

Funding Co-ordinator of Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG), playing a key part in the refurbishment of ‘The Quarry’. Cath’s skills, determination and hard work secured over £100,000 in external funding to finance these two projects. Following the results she said, “I’m thrilled to have been elected to both councils – I appreciate each and every vote and feel privileged to have met so many Tupsley residents during the election campaign. I’m passionate about our community and look forward to continuing to work with Cllrs Jim Kenyon and Marcelle Lloyd- Hayes to help improve the quality of life for local people.” Cath is a qualified teacher and spent 7 years working as an IT trainer in Hertfordshire, before becoming a mum and relocating to Herefordshire. When she is not taking care of her children or volunteering in the community, she enjoys practicing yoga and meditation. Cath is looking forward to engaging with the local community – especially with the under 16 and over 65 age groups, whose views have historically been under-represented in ward surveys. She is also keen to help local groups to identify and access funding opportunities available to them.

New Nursery School Opens in Tupsley After much renovation a new Nursery School, called Beech House, has recently opened in what was the Salmon Public House on Hampton Park Road. It enjoys the welcoming atmosphere of being set in a family home surrounded by a large, adventure-packed garden. Owned by the Marshall family, the Nursery consists of a Baby Nursery (for little ones from six months of age) and a Toddler Nursery, for Tots from around 18 months of age. A Kindergarten Department will open in 2014 for pre-school children. Children can enjoy stimulating activities and individual attention in a nurturing environment, as well as a wonderful multi-sensory room equipped with lots of sensorial resources. Beech House will take up to 35 children on the ground floor, and employs local

people. There are currently six full time members of staff. The Nursery also employs childcare Apprentices, supported with in-house training through their own Woodlands Training Academy. Local Policing will now be known as Safer Neighbourhoods, in line with Warwickshire Police. Herefordshire was split into ten Policing areas, each covered by a Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT), comprising Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and Special Police Constables. Our primary role will continue to be to work with local people and partners to identify, tackle and solve issues of day-to-day crime and anti-social behaviour. As part of these changes, the Tupsley and Aylestone area and the Three Elms and St Nicholas area, have been merged. Our area will now be known as Hereford City Northside. The Safer Neighbourhood Te am for Hereford City Northside consists of PCSO Leeanne Marwick and PCSO Anna Synnock who have been covering the patch for 7 and 6 years respectively, who are joined by PC John Westlake and PCSO John Mackie. PC Keith Ramone who was in the Tupsley Local Policing Team for 6 years has moved to join the City South Side and Rural Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The new Hereford City Northside Safer Neighbourhood Team From left to right:- PSCO Anna Synnock, PCSO Leeanne Marwick, PC John Westlake and PCSO John Mackie.

About your team Safer Neighbourhood Teams work with local people and partners to identify, tackle and solve issues that matter to the community where you live. Making

neighbourhoods safer by cutting day to day crime and anti-social behaviour is at the heart of keeping people in West Mercia safe. Thanks to an investment in mobile tablet style computers, these will enable officers to spend more time on patrol on the street and in neighbourhoods. Officers will continue to come to people when they need them and provide a high quality service however you contact us – in person (on the street, at community bases and at partners and communities together [PACT] meetings), on the phone or online.

Where we work The Hereford City Northside SNT is based at Hereford Police Station, Bath Street, Hereford.

To contact us To talk to members of the team please telephone 101 or email us at herefordnorthside.snt@westmercia.pnn police.uk

New Powers for Police Community Support Officers Historically, the PCSO role has been to be a highly visible local presence and to lead on community consultation and engagement with local people. Based upon eight years of practical policing experience and feedback from PCSOs, the forces have decided to increase their powers in certain areas as permitted by law and to allow them (when operationally necessary) to work longer hours. From 30 September, the new powers designated by both Chief Constables enabled PCSOs to enforce legislation primarily relating to young people, issues relating to the unlawful possession of alcohol and drugs and to deal with traffic obstruction offences. Christmas Brings Hope For A Better World The harrowing images and news reports of the destruction in the Philippines that, although happening on the other side of the world, the effects, the emotions, the sense of loss can be felt in every home and heart that tries to digest the reports. We of course continue to want to pray and give as we can towards the relief and help of those affected. Christmas often tends to become a festival that tries to help us escape from the everyday pressures of life. It tries to make us think of rest, food, free time, gifts, pleasure and often exuberance. It offers dreams and images that capture our imaginations and sense of idealism. The reality is that we have made Christmas a festival that many get into debt over, that does not always live up to its hope and dreams (‘I’m dreaming of a White Christmas’ for example!). The ultimate truth about Christmas is of course further from that experience. It is not about an escape from the world but about living in it, with all the

gritty reality and mess that comes with it. God sending his Son into the world is not some made up fable that offers platitudes and gushiness. God sending his Son to us is the beginning of a new and radical hope and life for the world that speaks right into our own complex and often confusing lives. He comes to speak of a new world that can be created in the midst of an old one be experienced. He comes to speak of a new way of life that overcomes the tired and worm out mantras of our day. He comes to break into our world and our lives with his overwhelming offer of love and liberty. Whatever life is throwing at you this month, this week, this day - the hope of Christmas is that God is with us. I encourage you to just spend some minutes this year thinking about seeing God afresh in your lives. Revd John Watson Vicar, St Paul’s, Tupsley and St Andrews, Hampton Bishop

Groups With Regular Meetings

Spring Issue copy deadline is Monday 10th February (Publication 1st March) for news of events before the Summer Issue publication on 1st June.

News from St Paul’s Church Choirstalls It’s been a very exciting time recently for the choir and singers at St Paul’s Church, Tupsley. The Junior Choir (7-16 year olds) has worked hard through ‘Voice for Life’, the RSCM’s training scheme, and the five regular attendees are not too far away from their first certificate. If you have a child of appropriate age who might enjoy joining the choir please do get in touch and find out more. The Singers (adults) lead the singing for our weekly Sunday morning services. You don’t have to read music. Again, if you’d be interested in joining us, do get in touch. Cantate Domino is a new choir, formed from a large pool of singers around the county. The music is more challenging, and so there are extra rehearsals. We are looking for more singers to join this choir, and all voice parts, but especially tenors and basses are encouraged to get in touch! If you would like to know more about the music at St Paul’s, please do get in touch with me: Jon Weller (Musical Director) Call: 07850 019489 Email: jonweller@stpaulshereford.org.uk

Plans Take Shape At Hampton Grange Care Home Plans to almost double the capacity of Hampton Grange Care Home, Hampton Park Road, are now just weeks away from completion. The work to add a 30 bedded wing to the existing 42 bedrooms is on schedule to finish by the end of the year, with new residents being welcomed from January 2014. Richard Claridge, owner of the Claridge Nursing Homes group, said, “I’m very excited to see our plans at Hampton Grange coming to fruition. Work started on site almost a year ago and we’re now busy ensuring that the interior meets the standards you would expect of a high quality care home.” The new wing will accommodate residential clients, rather than those requiring nursing services. This, Richard says, will fill a gap which currently exists in the market in Herefordshire. “Whether it’s for a short spell of respite care whilst family members take a break, or for a long term stay, we will provide hotel standard surroundings coupled with the reassurance of high quality care.” Pictured: Work on the new extension at Hampton Grange Nursing Home, Hereford

Tupsley Coffee Shop First, the good news - your Community Coffee Shop continues to flourish with around 80 customers each Wednesday, 10am –noon, at Hampton Park URC, Hampton Dene Road. Because the Coffee Shop is flourishing it is regularly able to make donations to charities and it was delighted to be able to donate £250 to the Philippines Typhoon Disaster Appeal. The ‘bad’ news is that we have decided not to open on Christmas Day. We will be back to normal and open on New Year’s Day 2014 and we would love to welcome you.
