Revd John Watson

St Pauls Church, Tupsley

Sunday June 22nd will be the last Sunday that the Revd John Watson and his family will be with St Paul’s Tupsley and St Andrew’s Hampton Bishop. Soon after this date they will make the move to London to begin John’s new post as Vicar of St Barnabas with Christ’s Chapel in Dulwich and Foundation Chaplain. It is almost 6 years that John has been Vicar in Tupsley and has seen a number of new things develop in his time here, namely the Whitehouse Project, closer ties with the two church schools, youth work and many creative services. John writes ‘It will be sad to leave the community which has welcomed us so warmly over these past six years. I was asked last year by Southwark Diocese to consider a move back to London, where we are from. I obviously prayed about the change and after a lengthy period was asked to be Vicar of St Barnabas. My whole family are really excited about the prospect but also sad to say goodbye to people here. “Dulwich is a very wealthy part of London which sits cheek by jowl next to some very poor parts. The church

VICAR OF ST PAUL’S, TUPSLEY MOVES ON itself is quite a large congregation and is very well known for its music - the organist is organ curator at the Royal Festival Hall and the church has a choir of over 80 people! I will also have responsibility for Christ’s Chapel which is an old chapel and houses one of the first organs in England. The independent schools in the area hold regular services at the chapel as well - though I am not a school chaplain. One of the school chaplains who will be on my team is a former Bishop’s School teacher and member of St Paul’s Tupsley - Anthony Buckley - so it feels a circle has been drawn. Dulwich and Peckham is a place where Jackie and I have lived before for over 10 years. So there is a feeling that we are going back to our roots.” “There will be many challenges and the opportunity to work with a wider community will be something I will relish.” If you wish to be part of that last Sunday there will be a service taking place at 10.30am in St Paul’s Church. This is different to our normal time so please be aware.

New Bench on Hampton Park Road

New bus stop bench

Bus users using the bus stop on Hampton Park Road (near Brookfield Vets) can now wait for their bus in comfort. In a consultation carried out by the group last year, more benches were indicated as a high priority for Tupsley.. To meet this need, the Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) sourced the bench and paid for it’s installation out of funds raised at their community events.

The Gardening Scheme in Tupsley is gradually becoming a reality. Partnerships are being formed between people who have gardens but do not cultivate them for various reasons, and enthusiastic gardeners who have nowhere of their own to grow plants. It’s a win-win situation and we all know there’s nothing more satisfying than growing your own veg (or f lowers)! The scheme needs an enthusiastic gardener who can help advise a group of local people who want to grow their own produce. They also need a greenhouse if anyone knows of one that is no longer needed. If you want to join the scheme, or can help with these requests, please ring Jim Kenyon on 07711 316 013 who will put you in touch with our local Garden Scheme co-ordinator.

10km Run & Easter Egg Hunt

Residential Property Sales & Lettings

One such event was the first Tupsley 10km Run and Easter Egg Hunt organised by the group on Easter Sunday at The Quarry, in conjunction with The Friends of St Paul’s Primary School. Over 70 runners took part in the adult race and a great day was had by all, with money raised being split between CTCG and the School Friends. The Children’s Fun Run and Easter Egg Hunt were also a great success - the play area was packed with children hunting down chocolate treats and there was even an appearance by a special Easter Bunny!

TupsleyVoice Choir Concert at St Paul’s Church On 9 April St Paul’s Church were delighted and very privileged to welcome Academia Musica to sing their Passiontide programme. The concert was beautifully sung by this very ambitious choir under their conductor Aryan Arji. This semi professional choir was formed four years ago and had a recording contract with Priory. It includes a scholarship programme for sixth form students to prepare for cathedral and university choral scholarships. The programme began with the popular Allegri Miserere. The words are from Psalm 51 and the choir was divided into two groups. The solo group of four singers: Vicky Miller, Bryony Cowell, James Davies and Rhys Griffiths included a number of top Cs for the 1st soprano. The performance continued with Scarlatti’s ten-part setting of the Stabat Mater. Some of the entries from the sopranos (divided into four parts) were a little tentative, but this was a fine performance from the choir. Arji certainly knows how to challenge his choir. The second half began with another setting of the Miserere, this time by Scarlatti, and then the double choir Stabat Mater from Palestrina. Victoria’s O Vos Omnes and the Crucifixus a 8 by Lotti completed the programme, the final piece believed to be part of a rather longer work. The choir performed the same programme in Malvern Priory and then at St John Smith Square in Westminster, a venue at which they had recently performed Bach’s St John Passion alongside Selwyn College Choir, Cambridge.

New Management at Pink Hair Salon The popular hair salon Pink Hair Salon in Gorsty Lane, Tupsley has a new lease of life, thanks to new ownership by a Tupsley resident, a new management team and a team of stylists who have decades of experience between them. Pink Hair Salon’s new Manageress Lisa is assisted by existing stylists Sam Fish and Tracey Boyle and newcomer Donna Williams, a senior stylist who has brought new customers to the salon. “What’s great is that we have all worked together before, so that created a nice atmosphere straight away,” Lisa said. “It’s working well having a good team, and the new customers, who were used to having to fight for parking spaces in town, are enjoying the more relaxed atmosphere here where we have free parking.” Maintaining the comfortable and friendly atmosphere that existing customers are used to is important to Lisa and the rest of the stylists who are keen to continue to encourage female and male clients of all ages to visit the salon. TupsleyVoice Summer Holiday Club and Picnic, Play and Stay Last summer (2013), St Paul’s Church Childcare Services started a new project to provide some school holiday care for children as an extension of the pastoral care provided for families with young children in our local community. It was well received and a great success; so this year (2014) it will be extended! The “Summer Club” will operate every day for 6 weeks (excluding Bank Holiday Monday – August 25th) from the Community Centre from 8am to 5pm daily. Children will be able to pay for as few or as many hours as they would like within the period and these hours can vary week by week and be for as few or as many weeks as required for a set fee of £4 per hour. A new venture this year will be an “Out and About” day each Wednesday. As with last year, the majority of staff will be current staff employed within the Nursery or After School Club along with a few students who are at college or university studying for a career in child care. All of the feedback last year was positive. In response to the question, ”Would you consider using us again next year?” the following is typical of the responses we received. ”Definitely. Please do it again.” We also had written comments saying “C… really enjoyed coming to Summer Club and we are very grateful.” and “O… had the best time. Each day she asked to go! That is a true compliment on how much she enjoyed her time with you.”

Last year we also ran a “Picnic, Play and Stay” event each Wednesday from Noon until 3pm. This also will continue in 2014. The idea is that families come along and bring their own picnic with them and supervise their own children. However they have access to all the outdoor area and indoor activities provided by the Community Centre. A range of toys will be available for the children to play with and a craft activity put on each week linked to the theme. Tea ladies will be on hand to serve drinks and the afternoon will be supported by church members and clergy. The charge will be £1 per person subject to a maximum cap of £5 per family. This was a great success and well received last year and our feedback included:- “Definitely enjoyed it and would come again”; “Loved it. See you next year!”; “We are going to miss it. Really enjoyed it. Please have it again next year”; “I liked the fact it was open to the whole family”; “I think it was very well organised and everyone was catered for”; “Brilliant idea!”. TupsleyVoice Funeral of Legendary St Pauls School Headmaster The funeral took place at a packed St Paul’s Church on 4 April of Harry Spencer a legendary Headmaster of St Paul’s Primary School from 1973 until 1988 (15 years). He died on 19 March 2014 at the age of 88 leaving his wife Eve. Thousands of young people passed through the school while he was headmaster and while they were there he knew every one of them, including their name. Most of them and their parents remember him with great affection and respect. Alison Howard, still a teacher at the school, told Tupsley Voice:Mr Spencer was a kind and considerate gentleman. Coming to Hereford as a newly qualified teacher from Bournemouth, he realised that I had no links to the area and so he and his wife, Eve immediately volunteered to put me up in their lovely house, whilst I looked for accommodation. Their welcome made me sad to leave them. As teachers, our playtimes were always rushed, so Harry always made sure a large pot of tea was ready and waiting for us in the staffroom. Non-contact time was not provided to teachers in the 1980’s, but Mr Spencer would take our classes in turn for half an hour’s handwriting. Not only did this give us valuable time but it also enabled him to know every child in the school. His calm Christianity showed through in the way he lead daily school assemblies. He was a true gentleman. Tristram Jenkins, one time Head of Diocese Education and a St Paul’s church member said:Harry was a special person and a great character. We knew him as teacher, Head, Christian educationist, faithful fellow-parishioner, and friend of our Diocese – an ace in the Church School pack, devoted alike to his family at home and on the campus. So many children, like our own three, were entrusted to his safe keeping. Behind that stern front, and along with that professional integrity, there lay the kind heart and the sense of fun. For a man of high standards and unswerving principles life is not always easy: but crestfallen moments were soon lightened with a wry grin and a twinkling wit. We can call to mind generous hospitality in Holywell Gutter Lane, when he and Eve opened their home for Twelfth Night parties …… amusing treasure-hunts at Epiphany. But the guiding Star was serious and Harry never lost sight of it. For a life of constant commitment and vocational example, with laughter in its midst, praise be! 6

TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2014

Mair Granthier, teacher at St Paul’s School from 1976:Harry was an energetic head teacher and a man of integrity in his dealings with children, staff and parents. He wanted everything to be run properly and set high standards. Good handwriting was a particular passion that he passed on to children. Letters had to be formed correctly and spacing was important too. Many times I saw him sitting beside a child showing them how to improve and take a pride in how their writing looked. Under Harry’s headship lady members of staff were certainly not expected to wear trousers, except for PE lessons, and had quickly to change into more suitable attire after such lessons! One thing stuck with me all through the years and has become an automatic reaction whenever I need to climb on a chair! One of our termly tasks was to cover the wall boards in our classrooms with long lengths of coloured paper. To do this Harry insisted that any chair that we climbed on had to have the back facing the wall, thus stopping us from falling over the chair back if we fell! On occasions Harry would come and assist with this task, always checking that any chair to be climbed on was facing in the correct direction. Christmas parties were a feature that we looked forward to and we were entertained and fed royally by Harry and Eve Spencer. Their home in Holywell Gutter Lane was opened up and so much effort was put into making the parties fun and a night to remember. Many staff and countless children and their parents have reason to remember Harry Spencer with gratitude. At the funeral his son Howard gave a very moving address matching much of what is written above. Phrases he used were:- He cared deeply about the children; he gave respect and expected respect; to control a difficult class he just looked at them; he was fair and kind; he made you feel important; he was always immaculately dressed; he loved music and was devoted to his wife, family and grandchildren; his life was spent laying foundations; a faithful and energetic steward of his school; behind a stern front was a kind heart; he had a sense of fun and a twinkle in his eye. Tupsley will not forget and will be grateful to Harry Spencer for a very long time. May he rest in peace and satisfaction at what he achieved.

TupsleyVoice Council Cost cuts hit grass cutting services in Tupsley It has been reported to Tupsley Voice by our councillor Jim Kenyon that this year Herefordshire Council have planned to cut the grass verges and open spaces just 3 times in the grass growing season instead of 7 times. Because the Council’s income from the rates and the government has been restrained, cost savings have had to be made, and the grass cutting and tree pruning has been one of the casualties of the cuts. To make savings the ground maintenance team of eight men has been reduced to just three. During the cutting season, the grass is cut on a council ward rota – a whole ward is cut before moving on to the next ward, until the rota is started again. The task is being made harder by the length of the grass and in some cases they have to cut it twice to get the same result, meaning it takes longer to complete the rota. Indeed at the time of writing, Tupsley has still not received its first grass cut of the year, and we are well into the month of May. Jim Kenyon has spoken to the leader of the council and the Chief Executive, to express his concerns about the long grass and to pass on the concerns of many residents who have contacted him. In addition, because of the difficulties of cutting the long grass, he is concerned that the now small maintenance team may even struggle to cut the grass three times in the year. Self help is the order of the day. Jim has cut some areas himself, including the children’s play areas, using a tractor unit and sit on mowers, which he has managed to borrow. Where he has got the grass down to a manageable height, many local residents who helped or came out to speak to him, will now try themselves to keep down grass near to their properties.

Jim said “You may think it’s not your job to do it and it’s not, however, I do believe that in Tupsley we have great pride in where we live and if we can do a little more as a community, it will help to keep on top of this until a more permanent solution can be sorted. I have also had talks with Balfour Beatty about potentially borrowing some of their equipment and holding training for Central Tupsley Community Group members and hopefully other volunteers, to correctly use it. That may be one answer; identifying more funding or better use of the allocated budget may be another.” The grass maintenance team also carry out tree works. Since grass cutting is the priority nothing but emergency works are currently being carried out on trees. Jim knows that many residents are angry about this but he asks that residents try and stay positive. If anyone would like to volunteer to help a little, until hopefully the problem can be solved, he requests that people ring him. interesting and informative talk about the Martha Trust in February. A walk in April along the new Greenway Cycle path starting at the impressive new bridge over the river Wye, viewing Rotherwas Chapel along the way and ending with a meal at The Wye Inn made a very pleasant outing. On 6th May we celebrated our 94th birthday with a meal at the Orchard Restaurant at Hereford & Ludlow College, where 28 members enjoyed an excellent lunch cooked by the students. At our regular meeting in May we voted on the proposal to be put to the 2014 Annual Meeting in Leeds in June namely “The NFWI notes that three people die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant. We call on every member of the WI to make their wishes regarding organ donation known, and to encourage their families and friends and members of their local communities to do likewise” In June we will be enjoying a Strawberry Tea at the home of one of our members and then we will be back at the Shire Hall for the July meeting on the 2nd Monday.

8

TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2014

In March the AGM had few surprises as the officers remained unchanged and the committee, apart from the resignation of two members owing to ill health, the same. We have had a successful season with lots of interesting talks, days out and lunches and from the proposed programme for the coming year this looks set to continue. At the next meeting we welcomed Mr Glyn Johnson once again who with his humorous anecdotes about the mishaps in a radio studio kept us in gales of laughter. At the beginning of April Jen Green told us of her life and of the many responsible posts she had held, although being labelled as “an 11 plus failure“. One wonders what would have happened if she had passed the exam. After the talk we had in February on the “Little Princess Trust”, Irene Lloyd, helped by various Guild members, held a coffee morning at her home and made a good sum of money which has been donated to this good cause.

TupsleyVoice Steve Chandler gave a talk on “Life in an African School“. The links between the Ugandan School and Bishops School which he set up when he was Deputy Headmaster are strong and have resulted in exchanges between the school with great benefits to both. In May the Rev. Mark Inglis, curate at St Paul’s Church, spoke of the new Whitehouse Community Centre project. It is being held up owing to a lack of funding but it is hoped that further grants will soon be received, whereupon the refurbishment will commence. It will be a great asset to the community at large and we hope to see the project starting before too long.

St. Paul’s Church to Celebrate 150 Years The celebration of 150 years of St. Paul’s Church begins this year. The laying of the foundation stone took place in July 1864 and the church was consecrated in November 1865. A varied programme is being planned between July 2014 and November 2015. Below is an outline of events. 2014; Sunday, July 13th, 10.00 a.m. A service of celebration for the laying of the foundation stone in 1864 followed by a lunchtime Hog Roast on the school field. People are encouraged to dress in Victorian costume. Come and enjoy games, maypole dancing, skittles etc. Relive Victorian times. The following events are also planned. Future Issues of Tupsley Voice will provide more details nearer to the event.

Champions - Bishop’s School 7 a side team The Bishop’s School 7 a side rugby team with their coach John Escott – Winners of the Llandovery College Seven a side Tournament in February. This tournament was played in the worst weather conditions imaginable, and yet this team played as if it were a sunny Spring day! Bishops were one of only three teams invited from England, the others being St James’ School from Surrey and Wellington School, Somerset. In their five games Bishops notched up 187 points (an average of 37 points a game!) and conceded nil! They gave an outstanding display of how to play 7’s in both defence and attack. TupsleyVoice Preb. John Reese Retires Prebendary John Reese, Vicar of St Paul’s Church, Tupsley, from 1991 until 2008 retired from the ministry on 27 April. Since March 2008 he has been Team Rector of South Wye, Hereford, based at St Martins Church, Ross Road. He and his wife Hazel are retiring to Leamington Spa where they will be close to their eldest daughter Hannah. Whilst he was at St Paul’s John Reese achieved many things and as a result he was encouraged to move to the problematic South Wye parish for the final 6 years before his retirement, where his talents could be used to the full. It is understood his 6 years were a success and were warmly appreciated by the St Martin’s congregation at his retirement farewell. Whilst at St Paul’s, after coming from Bishop’s Castle, he organised the construction of the fabulous Community Centre with its link corridor to the church to replace a rapidly deteriorating prefabricated church hall with a frequently leaking flat roof. He then had the vision to radically refurbish the interior of the then 135 year old church so that it was appropriate for a 21st century congregation. In addition during his early years he appointed a new director of music to provide modern hymns and music at services he designed to attract families with young children, while at the same time retaining traditional services for those who still wanted them.

TupsleyVoice Hereford City Guided Walks Learn about the history of the City and other places that you can visit on your own by joining a Walk of Hereford City guided by one of the Volunteer Guides from the Hereford Guild of Guides. The Guides are all unpaid volunteers who have studied the origins and development of Hereford. As the Mayor’s Official Guides they proudly wear a badge with the City’s coat-of-arms. Each guide prepares his or her own route, varying it to suit the walkers or the weather. Every walk will take in places of particular interest. Buildings of special importance will be pointed out. The Guild is supported by Hereford City Council and Visit Hereford. Founded in 1981 by Jean O’Donnell the Hereford Guild of Guides aims to foster tourism in the City of Hereford by bringing the city alive for tourists. Even those that have lived in Hereford for many years learn about the significance of places and people associated with their city. Currently there are 29 guides, 9 of whom live in Tupsley, including Jean O’Donnell who is President of the Guild. Yvette Western has been a guide since 1996, while Joan Lawrence and Roger Lind became members in 2004. David Fagg received his badge in 2007, and the latest intake of guides in December 2011 included Anne Finch, Margaret Kemp (Hon Secretary), Hilda Wilson and Peter Wilson. This year the Guild are running their Know Your City Course designed for anyone interested in the history and development of the City, but it is hoped some students will go on to train as voluntary tourist guides. See their website for details and application form Daily walks in 2014 - every day from the 10th May to the end of October starting at 11.30am except on Sundays when the start time is 2.30pm. Each walk lasts for about 1 ½ hours. The walks start at the North Porch of the Cathedral. There is no need to book in advance but you will need to purchase a ticket from the Cathedral shop prior to joining the walk (or from the guide on Sundays if the shop is closed) - the charge is £4 per adult, £1 for accompanied children aged 6 - 12. See Hereford’s interesting and historic buildings and other structures, hear about the history of the city through the ages from Saxon times, its role in the Civil War and its famous people.

Left to Right::- National Trampoline Finalists L to R Liberty Jones, Jasmine Parry and Rebecca Board.

St Paul’s pupils excel at National Trampoline Finals St Paul’s Primary School is proud that pupils Liberty Jones, Becky Board & Jasmine Parry competed in the British National Trampoline Finals in March in front of a fully packed Gateshead Leisure Centre. The girls competed against 32 girls in the Under 11’s category of the British National Finals. The atmosphere was electric and overseen by the Team GB and 2012 Olympic Trampoline Champion Kat Driscoll. The girls scored:Liberty Jones 50.8 points ; Becky Board 47.8; Jasmine Parry 41.1 Liberty Jones excelled in her routines giving her the highest score overall beating the remaining 31 girls in the Under 11’s Category and also beating the Individual National Champion’s score. The coaches and the girls were ecstatic. The team was placed in 4th position in the UK. This is a major achievement following exceptional performances through the Regional, Zonal and National rounds of this competition. What a fantastic day and experience they had. Meeting Kat Driscoll was the icing on the cake for the girls and Kat signed the girls National Finals T Shirt ‘s telling them to “Dream Big and Believe.” The girls did not want the day to end.

St Pauls School – Treasure Island St Paul’s Primary School ended the Spring Term 2014 with a Year 3 & 4 production of ‘Treasure Island’. The children thoroughly enjoyed being part of this well-known tale of pirates and mutiny aboard the Hispaniola. Directed by Alison Howard and accompanied by Ruth Hayden-Cox, main parts were played by Matthew Gallear as Jim Hawkins, Max Cook as Billy Bones, Lucia Patterson-Navarro as Long John Silver and Ella Williams as Dr Livesey. They were ably supported by their classmates who acted, sang and danced with incredible maturity and enthusiasm. It really was an outstanding end to the term, following a successful visit from Ofsted inspectors at the end of March. TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2014
