Mrs S Woodrow, Head Teacher Broadlands Primary School, Tupsley 1965 - 2015

BROADLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL TO MOVE On Thursday 13th November, Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet gave the green light to an innovative, ground breaking proposal that will see pupils at Broadlands Primary School leave their current site and relocate to a newly refurbished building at neighbouring Aylestone Business and Enterprise College. The proposal should result in significant financial investment in the two schools and is seen as a natural progression as they have actually been working in partnership as a federation since September 2013. The proposal put forward by the federation’s Governing Body was provisionally agreed at a meeting last month, but now that Herefordshire CC Cabinet have approved the plans the project can start to move forward. If all goes well the project should be completed in time for the start of the next school year in September 2015.

“This really is a fantastic opportunity for us to improve the facilities on offer to children at Broadlands Primary and although it will be sad to say goodbye to the old building, children and staff will gain a bright, light and energy efficient new school, which they all fully deserve. Our mission is to provide a modern, fit-for-purpose Primary School setting, so that Early Years and Primary children relocated from Broadlands will move into their own building, separate from the high school setting and be provided with dedicated, fenced play areas solely for their age group. As a federation we completely understand why some families may be concerned by this unique proposal – especially families with children at Broadlands, but I can reassure people that this is being done with the best interests of all the pupils we serve in mind.

The plans will result in education being provided for the two schools on one site, but clearly separated for safeguarding purposes. The existing Broadlands Primary School building urgently needs major improvement work simply to remain operational for the next two or three years. The proposal makes economic sense, since money can be invested in creating new facilities for Broadlands pupils, rather than being spent on just sustaining old ones. Speaking after finding out that Cabinet had signed off the proposal and given the go ahead for this project, federation Head Teacher Sue Woodrow said:

I would ask anyone with questions or concerns to make contact with us so we can discuss these issues as we want this process to involve opinions from everyone. Please do not feel reluctant to approach us, we want to hear from people to ensure we make the most of the great opportunity we have. In the next few weeks we will be inviting Broadlands pupils and their families to come and have a look around the new site so that they can understand what the proposal means and which buildings are involved. We feel this is really important as we want everyone affected to understand exactly why we believe this proposal gives us the best possible chance of providing our children with the education they deserve.”

Christmas reminds us of an Opportunity I am beginning to feel cheated! No sooner has the autumnal damp chill set in after the warmth of Bonfire night: no sooner have the twinkling showers of firework displays settled into the smoky night time mist than I can see yet more twinkling lights on the horizon. Since the early part of October the local shops have been reminding us that Christmas is getting near. In some way, the passing of Bonfire night is yet another reminder that the seasons come and go at a steady pace. Very soon, it will be the season of Christmas.

Understanding

My calendar suggests that I too will need to get out of the office and go shopping! And that is why I am beginning to feel cheated. The secular nature of this age in which we live appears to have overtaken the real reason why we celebrate Christmas.

Bayley Brothers

The bright lights, twinkling baubles and attractive displays are all designed to entice us into the warm setting of the shops. Makes us feel cosy and cheerful – gets us into the mood and as has been suggested by some, retail therapy is, after all, good for you.

Sometimes though, that feel good factor is only short-lived. A bit like some of the toys we will be buying for children: they might just last into the New Year before either losing favour or simply breaking. However, for the Christian congregations in this locality, Christmas has a much longer lasting presence. Christmas is for us a reminder that the Son of God came to live amongst us. We will sing, ‘O come, O come, Immanuel’ - Immanuel means ‘God with us’ and that is what happens. We will sing, ‘Away in a manger, no crib for a bed’ because in this season of Christmas we celebrate the greatest of gifts ever given, the birth, in very humble surroundings, of a child who becomes the light of hope for a world that is in darkness. From the all too familiar story of skies filled with angels and shepherds leaving their flocks on the cold winter hillside to visit this vulnerable child, born of Mary, to the message of intense love and acceptance as spoken through the words of the Gospels: we are offered an opportunity to turn from the bright lights and baubles of the short lived, to accepting a gift that will remain in our hearts for a very long time. Enjoy your celebrations, I don’t wish to spoil that. But don’t let the short-lived cheat you out of the truth behind the season of Christmas.

TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2014 | 3

TupsleyVoice 150 Years of history Celebrated at St Paul’s Church Drama St Paul’s church was packed on 15 November with a very appreciative audience, reflecting, laughing, applauding and singing at a special drama written to celebrate the building of St Paul’s Church 150 years ago. The drama relived the 150 years of the church’s history starting with the gift of land, the laying of the foundation stone on 14 July 1864 and its opening service, in November 1865. The audience were then taken on a journey from 1865 to the present day. They “listened” to several dramatized church council meetings during the early years. In 1878 the decision was taken to install the fine Bradley and Foster of Sheffield organ at a cost of £348. They were amused to hear a Council meeting in 1900 discussing how to deal with the inadequacies of the heating system; since the upgrading of the heating system is being debated again by the current Church Council. Nothing changes! In 1909 they gratefully accepted the chancel screen and matching pulpit donated by the family of John and Elizabeth Mackay. This was soon followed by the acceptance in 1911 of the wooden reredos at the East end of the chancel and in 1913 by the choir stalls and organ front, all of them in beautiful oak. Peter Carmen and Catriona Inglis contributed a moving musical accompaniment to a scene centred around the 1914-18 war and its effects on the Tupsley community. The drama had been written by David Rawson, a Tupsley resident following intensive research by Georgina Walters who was the Parish Secretary for very many years and still a very active member of St Paul’s church. Jean Shave produced the play, and the audience participated with three hymns accompanied by the church’s musical director, John Weller.

The cast ready to celebrate the Anniversary Drama “150 Years of St Paul’s Church” The production was accompanied by a visual display of old photographs and maps illustrating the story from the Victorian days through to the present which the very appreciative audience were able to study while enjoying ‘wine and nibbles’ at the interval. Following the interval several people, many who had attended the church for very many years gave their personal memories and reflections of church life at St Paul’s, Tupsley. The underlying message of the drama was to give glory to God for whom the church was built and to whom it was to be a place for worship for the whole community of Tupsley and many beyond. We thank God that despite the many practical concerns of construction and management this, the true purpose of the church, has been maintained. As one of the hymns sung during the evening begins: “The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord”.

Hereford Art College Student takes Firework Photos Kayley Herbert a student of photography at Hereford College of Arts decided to go to the Tupsley Bonfire and practice her skills taking photos of the fireworks. Tupsley Voice appreciated her results and selected one to accompany our article on page 6. Kayley was born and bred in Hereford and lived in Tupsley. She tells us she has always had an interest in art. At the age of 14 or 15 she started to enjoy taking photographs. Studying at Hereford College for her further education she really enjoyed her studies which encouraged her to study for a degree in photography at the HCA. After finishing her degree she hopes to have have a gap year travelling before setting up her own photography business to carry on doing what she loves.

St Paul’s School Choir at Cathedral Remembrance Service On the evening of Tuesday 11th November, the children and staff of St Paul’s School Choir took part in a special Remembrance Service at Hereford Cathedral with musicians from the Cathedral School and other local primary schools. The children sang beautifully and made a lovely contribution to this special evening. It was particularly impressive that such young children were able to sing the ‘Pie Jesu’ from Faure’s Requiem in Latin and without any words sheets!

Tupsley Quarry Bonfire Night Celebration The Tupsley community will certainly remember the 5th of November this year when several thousands of people attended Central Tupsley Community Group’s 2nd annual family friendly Bonfire Night event at Tupsley Quarry. The event was another huge success enjoyed by the whole community and looks set to become a Tupsley tradition for years to come. Central Tupsley Community Group was responsible for holding this very special community event. Now in its 3rd year, the group aims to enhance the quality of life, vitality and safety of the Central Tupsley community. Building on the success of its annual summer Picnic in the Park, it has now firmly added the bonfire night event to the social calendar for Tupsley. In line with the ethos of the group, entry was free and included a bonfire, a spectacular 20-minute firework display and even free entry to two of the children’s roundabout rides. The event was bigger and better than last year’s – hungry families had the choice of a hog roast, falafel stall and BBQ. Café Alfresco also attended to supplement the volunteer tea stall, which also offered homemade candy floss and toffee apples. The Mayor of Hereford was on hand to judge the guy competition and Hereford City Council were in attendance with their display tent. Tudors most kindly agreed to sponsor the night, and the community showed their generosity by donating to the collection buckets on their exit. The collection raised a splendid £3000, which will ensure that the event can take place again next year 6 | TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2014

and remain an accessible, family friendly night for the whole community to enjoy. Cllr Kenyon, chair of CTCG, summed up the community spirit that is alive and well in Tupsley and in evidence on the night: “This event was about more than a bonfire night – it’s about bringing people together. We had more than 100 volunteers helping out - we want to create memories for the children.” As always, the event was made possible by the generosity and commitment of local businesses and volunteers, including Hampton Hire, the Probation Service, local scouts, young volunteers the ‘Epics’ from Close House and the Community First Responders. CTCG are always looking for new members to join the committee or help out now and again – there are lots of volunteering opportunities available and all contributions are welcomed and valued. They would also like to know what the community wants and needs to make Tupsley an even better place to live, so feel free to get in touch. They are now busy planning the second Tupsley 10k run, which will take place at Easter and raise funds to subsidise the school crossing patrol on Church Road. The Group meets at 7pm on the 1st Monday of each month at St Paul’s Church Community Centre – all Tupsley residents are most welcome to come along. For more information, call Jim Kenyon on 07711 316 013, Cath North on 07941 966 555 or visit the Group’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CentralTupsleyCommunityGroup.

TupsleyVoice Picnic in the Park 2014 The 3rd annual Picnic in the Park was held in Tupsley Quarry in September after it had to be postponed at the last minute when severe rain was expected (and came) on 19th July. As in previous years it was a tremendous success with very many hundreds of people attending and having fun. Countless hours of voluntary work was done by the Central Tupsley Community Group and its supporters to bring it all together for which the community is most grateful. They are to be congratulated and thanked for the success and happiness they created for the community. There were countless running races of all types (running, sack and egg & spoon) for both sexes of all ages. It is debateable whether the adults or the children had more fun with the races. There was a very long queue of children for pony rides kindly provided by the Riding for Disabled, a fire engine and police car to explore and a bouncy slide as well as many food and drink stalls. A few of the many photographs taken are printed here to give a flavour of the occasion.

TupsleyVoice Midlands First Prize for young Tupsley Model Engineer

Tupsley Councillor Marcelle Lloyd-Hayes to be Mayoress?

11 year old Noah Eggar from Tupsley is a member of the Hereford Society of Model Engineers. He along with club members attended in October the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition and won First Prize and the Stuart Shield for his working model of a Stuart No. 10 Horizontal Steam Engine in the Young Engineers Class, which is for work produced by young people under the age of 20.

Hereford’s Deputy Mayor Charles Nichols, a popular Three Elms Councillor, will be Hereford’s Mayor for the municipal year 2015 to 2016, provided he is re-elected next year. If so he has invited the Tupsley Councillor Marcelle Lloyd-Hayes to be his Mayoress.

The exhibition is held over 4 days at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre. The event is the biggest of its kind in the UK and the Hereford Society was one of over 50 similar clubs taking part. It is a showcase for superb model engineering. Each club has a display and this year the Hereford Society won the keenly contested Best in Show club display, an accolade that is not easy to win, so the members were rightly proud of their achievement. The range of models on the Hereford stand covered most model engineering disciplines with examples of boiler making, clocks, aircraft, ships, steam powered models and smaller gauge railway models. The models on show were just a small reflection of what the members make. Many people will be familiar with the Broomy Hill model railway, built and operated by the Club members from Spring to October, but not many are aware of all the other modelling that takes place. Several club members live in Tupsley including several young members other than Noah. The club carefully trains the young members in engineering skills. Two of the Society’s young engineers, who have now left school, have been accepted on to Engineering Apprenticeships with local companies and the Hereford Group Training Association. New members are always welcome, particularly young people from the age of 11. So why not go to one of the weekend open days, a Tuesday working group or a Saturday training day; or contact Club Chairman John Meaford on johe@phonecoop. coop to find out more. They look forward to meeting you. John Arrowsmith –

Charles is popular in the Three Elms Ward where, this summer, he organised an event similar to that of Tupsley’s Picnic in the Park. Marcelle tells Tupsley Voice that she looks forward to bringing out of storage and dusting off some of her favourite hats which have been sitting on top of her wardrobe waiting for an occasion such as this! As such she especially wishes Charles well in next year’s election.

“Rose Garden” Volunteers needed

St Paul’s Pupil Finishes Mud Runner!

The Rose Garden offers independent living accommodation for the elderly and is situated on Ledbury Road. We were very pleased with the response we had last year from Tupsley Voice readers to a request for volunteers….thank you. We could still do with more volunteers and so if you have time to spare perhaps you would consider it? It can be very rewarding and is much appreciated by those who live at the Rose Garden.

Noah Lloyd in Year 5 at St Paul’s School successfully completed the Mud Run in an impressive 34 minutes for his first attempt. Well done Noah !!

Please contact Lynn/ Tracey on 01432 363000 for an informal chat and to find out more

Thank you to everyone who supported Noah. He is on target to raise £200.

Getting Muddy - for a good cause, Well Done!

TupsleyVoice Hampton Dene School Hampton Dene Primary School pupils have been very busy this term with almost all classes participating in activities outside the classroom. Reception class visited the Monkland Cheese factory in Leominster. They learned about the production of hard and soft cheeses from milk to maturation and they even got to make their own, although they said that tasting it was even better! Year 2 visited Tillington Farm in support of a class based topic on the book “Oliver’s Vegetables” and as part of their ‘Harvest’ celebrations. The pupils cooked some vegetables and enjoyed tasting them! Our Year 3 pupils enjoyed an exciting day at Bristol Zoo where of course they saw very many animals and birds. In October Year 5 pupils visited the ‘Spaceguard Centre’, a working observatory, in Knighton, which looks out for asteroids and comets that could come close to colliding with Earth. The pupils have been learning all about Earth and Space in their school science lessons. They got to take part in some interesting activities at the Centre, as well as learning all about the different planets in our solar system. In the mini planetarium they were taught about how a star is born! They also got to see the giant telescope and felt the floor move beneath them as the telescope moved into position! Also in October, Year 6 enjoyed a sports taster session at Aylestone College. The sessions were delivered by the school’s very talented Year 11 students. Sports included: football, rugby, volleyball, hockey, basketball, circuits, badminton and table tennis. The pupils were very impressed with the school and the quality of the instruction.

Hereford City Schools Cup

Write a Will and support the Blind College We all know we should make a Will. But how many of us put off doing so without realising the implications for those we may leave behind? Making preparations in your lifetime about what should happen to your possessions or assets after you die may save your loved ones difficulties and cost in the future. Young people, as well as those of more advanced years, can make their wishes very clear by writing a Will. In partnership with the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC), two solicitors are offering to help local people get their affairs in order whilst also supporting the College’s work with people who are blind and partially sighted. From 9th to 20th March 2015, Sally Smith of Harrison Clark Rickerbys Solicitors, Hereford (01432 349670) and Nansi Webb of Gabbs Solicitors, Leominster (01568 616333) are offering to waive their Will writing fee in exchange for a donation to RNC. This opportunity relates to basic Wills i.e. where the instructions outlined in the Will are not complex. The suggested donation is £95 for a basic single Will and £150 for basic mirror Wills. The money raised will give students at the RNC the chance to live independently and the opportunity to retrain for work or the prospect of university. Demand is likely to be high so booking an appointment for Will Writing Fortnight as early as possible with one of the two participating solicitors is recommended. For more information, please contact Claire Buckland (Mondays and Tuesdays only) at The Royal National College for the Blind, Venns Lane, Hereford, HR1 1DT claire.buckland@rnc.ac.uk or call 01432 376371.

Hampton Dene’s boys’ football team participated in the ‘Hereford City Schools’ Cup’ this term. Amazingly for a relatively small school, they regularly reach the final stages of tournaments and this one was no exception. They got to the Final this season without losing a match. However, they lost the Final to Leominster in the cruellest of fashions; by the lottery of a penalty shoot-out! It was, however, a fine achievement by the Hampton Dene boys and they proudly showed off their medals to an appreciative audience at the school assembly.

Tupsley Dentists raise money for Dental Charity Earlier this year several staff at Tupsley Dental Practice, Aylestone Hill, including dentist Mark Worthing, took part in the Mudrunner Oblivion in aid of Dentaid. Dentaid is a dental charity which aims to improve the world’s oral health and also supports dental professionals in the developing world with equipment and training. The Mudrunner involved obstacles, many uphill runs and not surprisingly lots of mud! It was quite tough in parts but all involved had loads of fun and laughs. The Tupsley Team raised an amazing £366 for the charity, which included money from their family, friends and patients so they want to say a huge thank you to those of you that were kind enough to donate. They are already thinking of entering a team again next year – possibly with a few more from the Practice. TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2014 | 11
