BROADLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL TO MOVE On Thursday 13th November, Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet gave the green light to an innovative, ground breaking proposal that will see pupils at Broadlands Primary School leave their current site and relocate to a newly refurbished building at neighbouring Aylestone Business and Enterprise College. The proposal should result in significant financial investment in the two schools and is seen as a natural progression as they have actually been working in partnership as a federation since September 2013. The proposal put forward by the federation’s Governing Body was provisionally agreed at a meeting last month, but now that Herefordshire CC Cabinet have approved the plans the project can start to move forward. If all goes well the project should be completed in time for the start of the next school year in September 2015.
“This really is a fantastic opportunity for us to improve the facilities on offer to children at Broadlands Primary and although it will be sad to say goodbye to the old building, children and staff will gain a bright, light and energy efficient new school, which they all fully deserve. Our mission is to provide a modern, fit-for-purpose Primary School setting, so that Early Years and Primary children relocated from Broadlands will move into their own building, separate from the high school setting and be provided with dedicated, fenced play areas solely for their age group. As a federation we completely understand why some families may be concerned by this unique proposal – especially families with children at Broadlands, but I can reassure people that this is being done with the best interests of all the pupils we serve in mind.
The plans will result in education being provided for the two schools on one site, but clearly separated for safeguarding purposes. The existing Broadlands Primary School building urgently needs major improvement work simply to remain operational for the next two or three years. The proposal makes economic sense, since money can be invested in creating new facilities for Broadlands pupils, rather than being spent on just sustaining old ones. Speaking after finding out that Cabinet had signed off the proposal and given the go ahead for this project, federation Head Teacher Sue Woodrow said:
I would ask anyone with questions or concerns to make contact with us so we can discuss these issues as we want this process to involve opinions from everyone. Please do not feel reluctant to approach us, we want to hear from people to ensure we make the most of the great opportunity we have. In the next few weeks we will be inviting Broadlands pupils and their families to come and have a look around the new site so that they can understand what the proposal means and which buildings are involved. We feel this is really important as we want everyone affected to understand exactly why we believe this proposal gives us the best possible chance of providing our children with the education they deserve.”
