England Blind Football Team In Action

EURO BLIND FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 GAMES MAKERS NEEDED AT BLIND COLLEGE Tupsley is privileged to be hosting the IBSA Blind Football European Championships 2015 at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) from Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th August. The tournament will take place at thePoint4 in Venns Lane, the RNC’s state of the art public leisure centre and key training centre for the England Blind Football Squad and other Paralympians. It will feature ten European teams, including England and ruling champions Spain, with the winning team guaranteed a place at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. Blind football is fast paced and as entertaining as its sighted counterpart. Played 5-a-side at international level, the only sighted player on the team is the goalkeeper, who cannot leave his area. While the ball is in play the players require complete silence from spectators. This heightens the tension of the game and inevitably results in an explosion of noise when a goal is scored. Tournament Director Chris Combe said “England are unbeaten under their Head Coach, Hereford’s own Jon Pugh, and they

are going to be in great form going in to the Euros. Joining us as a spectator or by volunteering are great ways to get behind them and show your support for their Paralympic campaign.” Chris Combe added “Volunteers were a crucial part of the Blind World Cup, which we hosted in 2010, and of course the 2012 Paralympics. Now the Euros gives people another opportunity to get involved in an international sporting fixture right here in Hereford.” Volunteers need to be able to offer as much time as possible between 20 and 30 August 2015 and must be over the age of 16. More information on volunteering is available through the event website www.blindeuros.co.uk, by emailing andrea.biddulph@ rnc.ac.uk or by calling 01432 376 376. Following on from the team’s commanding performance at the IBSA Blind World Games in Seoul, South Korea in May, the England team is expected to perform well and challenge for the Championships title. Tickets for the tournament are available to buy online via: http://tickets.rncb.ac.uk/

Bishops School Prom - 2015 All Year 11 Students look forward to their Leavers Prom, and for the students at Bishops School, it’s no different. Each year Bishops Parents Staff & Friends Association (PSFA) organise the Prom, which is staged at the school. “The school hall is transformed”, says co-ordinator Fiona Bailey. “Staff from the school help out on the evening, providing waiter and waitress service alongside PSFA members. It’s an evening that we’re very proud of at Bishops - a time for the students to relax after exams and a fabulous way to say goodbye to the school and their teachers after five great years.” A large number of family and friends turn out to watch the guests arrive in a wide - and hugely entertaining - range of vehicles. This year’s Prom will be held on Friday 26th June, and Mrs Bailey would like to remind local residents to be aware of large and unusual traffic along Hampton Dene Road and Ledbury Road around the school between 6.30pm & 7.30pm. “We know it is a little disruptive for a short while, and are grateful to our neighbours for their support and understanding. We would ask anyone coming to watch the arrivals to park considerately.” Tupsley Voice hope to bring you some photos from the evening in our Autumn Issue

Picnic in the Park – Again! Thank you to all those runners who took part in the Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) 10k run on Easter Sunday and also to the youngsters who took part in the egg hunt. Hope you all had fun! Our next exciting event is the annual Picnic in the Park on Saturday July 19th starting at 12.30. This year we are being kindly sponsored by Watkins and Thomas estate agent. We will have the usual attractions...Community games, Pink Elephant, children’s rides, wild play, BBQ and much more. Making a special appearance will be Paws for Thought dog display, and a chance to win a BMW Z4 for a weekend by taking part in a balloon race. Lots of enjoyable, family fun! Work has been going on at St Paul’s nursery aided by volunteers from CTCG, Jim and Martin. The construction of a new hand rail is a job well done! For photos and more news see our Face Book page.

St Paul’s Church Summer Holiday Club and Picnic, Play and Stay Once again St Paul’s Church Childcare Services will be providing some school holiday care for children as an extension of the pastoral care provided for families with young children in our local community. The “Summer Club” will operate on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays (excluding Bank Holiday Monday – August 31st) from the Community Centre from 8am to 5pm daily. Children will be able to pay for as few or as many hours as they would like within the period and these hours can vary week by week and be for as few or as many weeks as required for a set fee of £4.20 per hour. As with last year, the majority of staff will be current staff employed within the Nursery or After School Club, along with a few students who are at college or university studying for a career in child care. The “Picnic, Play and Stay” event each Wednesday from Noon until 3pm will also return this year. The idea is that families come along and bring their own picnic with them and supervise their own children. However they have access to all the outdoor area and indoor activities provided by the Community Centre. A range of toys will be available for the children to play with and a craft activity put on each week linked to the theme. Tea ladies will be on hand to serve drinks and the afternoon will be supported by church members and clergy. The charge this year will be £1 per person subject to a maximum cap of £5 per family. Clive and Sylvia Richards officially opening the brand-new St Michael’s Hospice Inpatient Unit

New Hospice Inpatient Unit opens Clive and Sylvia Richards officially opened the brand-new St Michael’s Hospice Inpatient Unit on 31st March 2015. Clive said, ‘St Michael’s is built on the generosity of tens of thousands of people who have supported their Hospice over the last 30 years. I knew that raising the funds for the Redevelopment was going to be a massive challenge and I wanted to encourage people to get behind the project. I also wanted to show people just how inspirational their dedication to St Michael’s Hospice has been for me personally.’ As well as Clive and Sylvia’s generous one million pound donation, we have also had many many more people donate to the St Michael’s Hospice Redevelopment Appeal. Because of this incredible groundswell of local support, we have been able to welcome the first patients into the new state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit. Built to the highest engineering standards, every aspect of the highly insulated, timber-framed building has been considered to ensure we can continue to meet the needs of the local community for generations to come. Debbie Emmett, Health Care Assistant at St Michael’s Hospice, said, ‘When I began working at St Michael’s 15 years ago, the Hospice was much quieter. Today there is a much greater need for all our services, and we are caring for more people in many different ways.’

comes when I need more help, then I can’t think of anywhere else I would want to be than St Michael’s.’ The bespoke building has been one of the most challenging and ultimately rewarding projects for Architype, the Herefordshire-based architects who have designed and overseen the build. Architect Paul Neep said, ‘St Michael’s Hospice has touched the lives of so many people in Herefordshire; it has been a privilege to help create this beautiful new facility that will enable the Hospice to provide a quiet, comfortable and relaxing environment whilst avoiding clinical uniformity.’ The second stage of the redevelopment project, the refurbishment of the existing building, has now begun. Opening later this year, the two buildings will become a complete Hospice fit for the 21st century, providing all the space we need to care for and support people living with a lifelimiting illness, whether in their own homes or as inpatients. St Michael’s mission for the future is to continue to revolutionise palliative care and support more local families with a broadened range of services, thus meeting the community’s growing needs. If you would like to help St Michael’s Hospice raise the remaining £500,000 needed to finish the Redevelopment project, please pop a cheque in the post (made payable to St Michael’s Hospice) and send it to: St Michael’s Hospice, Bartestree, Hereford HR1 4HA

One of the key design features of the new building is private bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Debbie believes this feature is vital to help care for people with the dignity they deserve. ‘I can’t emphasise enough the difference the extra space and facilities will make to the quality of people’s lives during their stay at the Hospice.’ Mike Sloan was recently admitted into to the Hospice to receive treatment for prostate cancer. After a few weeks, Mike was able to return home; he now attends the Hospice’s Living Well clinic and has physiotherapy sessions. Mike said, ‘Coming back and seeing this new building is breath-taking. I want to stay living at home for as long as possible, but if a time 6

TupsleyVoice Broadlands Primary School Move to Aylestone College site will Improve Community Provision In the winter edition of the Tupsley Voice we reported that Broadlands Primary School is set to move from their current site to a newly refurbished building in the grounds of neighbouring Aylestone Business and Enterprise College. Since then, the Senior Leadership Team of the Federation of schools has been working hard with the Local Authority and developers to provide a modern, purpose built primary school setting ready for September. Plans have been submitted which include a one storey extension to the existing building, which will add three brand new classrooms and refurbish all other current rooms. This exciting development will see a new early years setting which will offer full time, wrap around care for children from the age of three, from September. Head Teacher Sue Woodrow said: “These exciting developments mean that the Broadlands Lane campus will become a real community hub. Parents will have access to high quality education for their children from the ages of 3-16 in two schools, on one site. The nursery provision will be flexible to suit parents from those who may want to opt in for a few sessions a week, to those that will want full time care.

I’m delighted that the Broadlands Children’s Centre will also be moving over with us and will be able to continue their excellent work supporting families. They will be based in the cottage next to the new primary school allowing us to continue to work together. We’re already looking at ways in which we can grow our provision and once settled, we’d welcome ideas from the community about how we can develop the whole campus to provide services the community would want. Work has already started at Aylestone to refurbish accommodation for the Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities faculties to provide bright, modern, well equipped facilities. Once the GCSE examinations are over work should be able to start on the new primary school. We’re really looking forward to moving the school across for September. The staff and children have all seen the plans and are really excited about the move. Anyone wishing to see the proposed plans or find out more about our nursery provision from September should visit our website www.broadlands.hereford.sch.uk” Simon Robertson, Assistant Headteacher - Achievement & Standards

Eleanor Oldroyd & Mary Rhodes

BBC sports presenters run for St Michael’s Hospice A father who inspired his daughter’s award-winning career in sports journalism was remembered when his family and friends ran the St Michael’s Hospice 10K and 5K runs on streets of Hereford on Sunday May 10th, with others doing a half marathon. BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Eleanor Oldroyd and one of her best friends, Midlands Today star Mary Rhodes, put on their running vests to raise money for the Hospice that cared for Eleanor’s dad, Colin Oldroyd. Colin was the Rector of Ledbury before retiring in 1995 to live in Tupsley. Eleanor said, ‘Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012, just after the Olympic games. He was admitted to St Michael’s Hospice at the beginning of February 2015. He had a famous sense of humour and the nurses enjoyed his jokes and talking to him about his love of cricket. The care they gave couldn’t have been better, and they even helped make it possible for dad to be at home for his birthday on Valentine’s Day.’ Eleanor and Mary ran with Eleanor’s brothers Andrew and Martin and her 15-year-old daughter Erin. Eleanor said, ‘The quality of time we spent with dad at St Michael’s was so special and his last week was one that we all will never forget. We felt privileged to be at the Hospice; when we learned about the humanity behind the donations that help fund the Hospice, we wanted to do our bit.’ This year Eleanor won Sports Presenter of the Year at the Sports Journalists’ Association Awards, something her dad would have been very proud of. ‘Dad managed to get tickets to go to a test match in 1977. He wrote a letter to my headmistress saying I wanted to be the first female cricket correspondent for the Times. I don’t think I had said anything of the sort, but it gave me the idea of having a career as a sports journalist. ‘Running the race was physically painful but also very emotional when they crossed the finish line. The week we spent at Dad’s bedside at St Michael’s brought us all closer as a family, and it was wonderful to be able to share such a special day with each other.’ Eleanor and her family raised over £1,200 for St Michael’s Hospice towards the target of £50,000 which the organisers were hopeful of achieving from the near 1000 runners who attended.

Please see www.traderregister.org.uk or call 01905 822799 for more information. Since July 2013, when agreeing a contract in their home, consumers are entitled to a 14 day cooling off period. A trader must provide specific information about your rights to cancel in writing and also ensure that you have the correct name and address for the trader. For information about your rights or to report a rogue trader please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service (CACS) on 03454 04 05 06. CACS provides first line advice on Trading Standards issues. If you believe rogue traders are operating in your area, take a note of their vehicle registration numbers and descriptions and call the police on 101. A call to the police could provide a piece of vital information that enables us to bring those responsible for these cruel offences to justice. Garden, shed & allotment security: Although many people take steps to protect their homes and the property inside them, they leave valuable equipment in gardens and unsecured sheds, providing easy pickings for opportunist thieves. Around 1,500 shed burglaries take place every year within West Mercia, which highlights the importance of storing valuable items securely. Effective garden security covers everything from boundary fences and gates to the valuables stored inside your shed. Registered and Regulated by

Election fever came to Hampton Dene in May where 5 Y6 pupils created their own political parties – each with their own policies and manifestos. The Children’s Democratic Party, The Children’s Liberal Party, The Children’s Priority Party, The Hampton Democrats and ‘UKIDS’ produced powerpoints and leaflets and spent a week canvassing for support amongst staff and pupils. Policies included: purchase of playground equipment; development of a ‘Science Room’ filled with chemistry sets; a period called ‘itime’ – free topic study of choice based on an Australian concept borrowed from their Australian pen-pals; longer playtimes; and even a proposition to raise money by ‘dunking’ teachers! We held the election on May 7th and announced the result at our celebration assembly the following day. The winner was ‘UKIDS’ (The United Kingdom Independent Democratic Society) whose leader Chelsea Lea Tippins received 74 votes. Chelsea was surprised to discover that as a result of her victory, (with a clear majority) she would be ‘Headteacher’ for a day, helping Mrs Kearns to run the school. Mrs Kearns praised the efforts of all the candidates; and said– “The children have been following the election closely and were keen to have their own. They have been studying ‘democracy’ as part of their topic work this year and I have been impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm. They have come up with some excellent ideas which we will put to the school council for approval in true democratic fashion.” Meanwhile new Headteacher Chelsea is promising to increase the length of pupils’ playtimes when she has her day in charge!

Jesse Norman re-elected as our MP On 7 May Jesse Norman was re-elected as Member of Parliament for Hereford and South Herefordshire. His majority went up from 2,481 to a huge 16,890. The following is a letter he sent to Tupsley Voice:Thank you so much to Tupsley Voice readers and everybody in Hereford and South Herefordshire who re-elected me as their Member of Parliament last month. It is a great honour to receive nearly 53% of the vote, and I am keenly aware of the responsibility it brings. The changes we need in Herefordshire - safeguarding the hospital, improving the local economy, getting a better deal for our public services, reducing traffic in the city, creating a new university - are all long-term in nature. All require sustained campaigning in partnership with Herefordshire Council and local community groups. But I am hugely optimistic for Herefordshire, and I am keen to get back to Westminster and to fight for our county. I will continue to do my utmost to make these changes happen, to give local leadership on key issues, and to support and represent my constituents. Readers who would like to know more about my campaigns and my work in Parliament can register for updates by emailing support@ jesse4hereford.com. Alternatively write to my constituency office at Suite 3, Penn House, Broad Street, Hereford, HR4 9AP – or ring 01432 276422.
