ST PAULS CHURCH WELCOMES ITS NEW VICAR AND FAMILY On Friday 4th September Revd. Prebendary Nick Armstrong will be installed as Vicar of the parishes of Tupsley and Hampton Bishop at a licencing service at St Paul’s Church led by the Bishop of Hereford. Nick Armstrong was previously the Rector of Alveley and Quatt near Bridgnorth, and the Rural Dean of Bridgnorth. Tupsley Voice was pleased to receive the following message and the above family photograph from Nick Armstrong for the Tupsley Community:“We’re so looking forward to meeting you as we join you from just south of Bridgnorth where we’ve been for over 18 years. Meanwhile we thought we’d introduce ourselves and our family. Nick’s upbringing was full of science/engineering and music. He seized the opportunity of a gap year after school with Plessey electronics, then reading physics at Bristol university, and back to work twelve years with Plessey - ending with their being taken over and relocating briefly to Devon... but other wheels were already in motion. Alison always knew she wanted to teach - and actually wrote it as her ambition aged 8. Although no longer teaching professionally now, she’s been able to use the skills for toddler, children’s and youth groups, school assemblies and of course bringing up 4 children. While working with Plessey, Nick had found a spiritual home in an active village Church just outside Milton Keynes. Five years in, Alison was applying for jobs on completing her B.Ed. She says she told God she’d happily go anywhere but... Milton Keynes! Arriving there as probationary teacher, we got to know each other through the vibrant life of the local church, and especially through leading a youth group together. We were married two years later in that church.

Four years on, with two children under 3, Nick heard that his department was to close due to Plessey being taken over. Soon after our wedding, we both knew that God was calling us together to something else in his service - but with no real clue what. With the news of closure, Nick jotted and considered many possibilities, and we even wondered if this was the nudge to an unknown mission adventure. In fact he was given a new job continuing some of his previous experience in microelectronics - now in Devon. But seeds had germinated in us, and amid the move, the last thing we suspected - becoming a vicar - was strongly confirmed in many different ways within a few weeks, although continuing for a year in Devon as the official process unfolded. Theological training took us to Bristol (Nick’s second spell, and also where Anna was born), and thence to 4 years curacy in Filey (and the blessing of Joshua our youngest). We all love the Lake District (where we’re writing this!), walking, exploring, family time, reading and messing around in boats. Nick continues to love music of many types, and plays oboe, and a little piano. The interest in science and engineering continues too, especially in discussion with faith matters. We also have a strong link with Nepal, through an orphanage and the friendships which have grown through many visits. And so to our children, who largely grew up in Alveley of course... Tim our oldest, (27), is married to Jenny. Jenny is a teacher, and Tim is full-time children’s minister at the Church in Peckham where he and Jenny met as interns and were married. TupsleyVoice Centenary of Sulva Bay, Gallipoli, landing On Saturday 8th August the Herefordshire Regiment’s landing at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli exactly 100 years previously was remembered at Sulva Barracks, Bartonsham with a display and an afternoon of events for the public. The afternoon finished with a memorial service and the Dedication of a Memorial Tablet to commemorate the Sulva Bay landing. The curator of the regimental museum had also found, borrowed and displayed the medals and paper records of over 100 members of the Regiment who took part in the Gallipoli campaign. On 16th July 1915 over one thousand men of the Herefordshire Regiment embarked at Devonport to take part in the Gallipoli campaign. By the time they reached Port Said the regiment had lost 4 Officers and over 200 other ranks from illness aboard ship. Tupsley Cross War Memorial lists the very many local men who died on active service in the First World War including those below. One of these was Captain E. Archibald Hume who is also remembered on the memorial at Helles for those with no grave as he lost his life on the ship going to Gallipoli. The regiment landed at Suvla on 8th August 1915. They lost 70 men in the following weeks of battle. Many more men died of typhoid and dysentery than died of wounds. The diet was poor comprising bully beef, hard biscuits and jam. Insanitary conditions and a shortage of drinking water together with extreme temperatures contributed to the situation.

Over 900 men from the Herefordshire Regiment were evacuated through wounds or sickness. Private John Lewis Millar, aged 18, was killed in action on 15th August. He is buried at Suvla. Major Wilfred Carless, son of a local solicitor, died on or after 12th August. Private Alfred Richard Williams, whose family had kept the Whalebone Inn, Eign, died on 9th August aged 19. Another 19 year old remembered on Tupsley Cross is Lance Corporal Thomas Norton, a Welsh Fusilier, who died on 13th August. These 3 men have no known grave and so are remembered at Helles. When the Herefordshire Regiment was evacuated in December 1915 there were fewer than one hundred of over one thousand who embarked. Susan Layton & Irene Lloyd 4

On Thursday 13th August 30 well-fed, happy ‘holiday makers’ left Hampton Park Church after three days of fun, fellowship, good food and creativity. They had all enjoyed the 11th Holiday@Home run by the Coffee Shop leaders, and friends from St. Paul’s Church and Hampton Park Church and folk from the community. Quizzes, jigsaws, craft (including making necklaces, boats, planes and bikes from wooden kits, de-stress colouring and glass painting) entertainment from the Rail Mail choir and Laurel and Hardy, Pam’s lunches, a visit to St. Michael’s church in Ledbury and a lovely lunch at the Countrywide Garden Centre, all combined to make a stimulating three days. Next year’s Holiday@Home will again be held on three days in August. Dates and details will be published in Tupsley Voice and will also be available from any of the staff at the Coffee Shop every Wednesday from early May.

Great British Summertime Bake-off Catering students from the Level 2 course at the Hereford Campus put their baking and creative skills to the test at the end of this term ‘Great British Summertime Cake Off’. This year they were also joined by their fellow students from the Level 2 Professional Chef course at Ludlow College. The competition was run as this year’s Joel Lawrence Memorial Competition. Created just over four years ago, the award remembers a fellow student who sadly passed away from cancer. Seven students created their own cake-off masterpieces to the theme summertime. The winning student was Lavinia Bromley from Ludlow College with her twolayered seaside cocktail cake ‘A Day at the Beach’. The ‘Gin & Tonic’ base layer was a lemon and lime drizzle cake with cold-infused gin and juniper berries in a cream whip. It was topped with a ‘Strawberry Daiquiri’ layer, a strawberry with white rum syrup and macerated strawberries. The whole thing was topped with edible sand made from sugar, biscuits and edible glitter. It was even finished with a couple of miniature deckchairs. Lavinia, who is going to study the Level 3 at HLC later this year commented, “I’m really happy to have won, everything went well and I am really pleased. I am looking forward to developing my skills next year, especially in patisserie.” 6

If you have a relative or friend who worked there, please contact Jean Mayne of the Group (Tel: 01432 263 521) or contact the Group via their web site www.rotherwasmunitionshereford. co.uk with any information that you have.

Jesse Norman elected Chair of Culture, Media and Sport Committee Since the last Issue of Tupsley Voice, I have been elected as Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee by my Parliamentary colleagues from across the House of Commons. The election was keenly contested but not close, I am pleased to say, and I won by over a hundred votes. Select committees play a key role in holding government departments and other public bodies to account. The issues in our remit are of vital importance both nationally and locally, and we have a clear mandate to improve public policy. We have hit the ground running, and when we meet again in September we will focus on the renewal of the BBC Charter and licence fee settlement. Tupsley Voice readers may be pleased to know that I can now use the Committee’s powers to push for faster and wider progress in delivering fast broadband to rural areas, as well as fighting for grass roots sport and fairer rural arts funding. All in all, our brief will keep us very busy. With luck it will help me to push still harder to put Herefordshire on the political map. If you would like to keep up-to-date with my local campaigns and Parliamentary work, please email support@jesse4hereford. com to receive regular updates. If you need my assistance with any issue, don’t hesitate to get in touch by emailing jesse.norman. mp@parliament.uk or by writing to my constituency office at Suite 3, Penn House, Broad Street, Hereford, HR4 9AP. TupsleyVoice New Headteacher for Aylestone and Broadlands Schools Executive Headteacher of the Aylestone, Broadlands and Withington Federation, Sue Woodrow, retired from her post at the end of the last school year. Sue started at Aylestone in 2008 and has immensely enjoyed the work she has been involved in to improve experiences and outcomes for the children at all three schools over the past seven years. Sue – who is looking forward to spending more time with her family and on her hobbies of sport, gardening and reading – said: “I have loved my time leading Aylestone, Broadlands and Withington as Headteacher and want to thank all staff, children, parents and governors for their hard work and support over the last 7 years. I wish everyone in the federation all best wishes and good luck for the future.” The Governors have appointed Simon Robertson as Executive Headteacher. Simon started at Aylestone as a newly qualified teacher in 1997 and has worked for the last 8 years as a key member of the federation’s leadership team. He knows all three schools extremely well and has worked hard to improve outcomes for children. Hereford has been his home for nearly 18 years after moving from his home town of Cardiff, and has two children aged 9 and 12. He enjoys spending time with his family and is regularly seen stood at the side of a sports field supporting his son or daughter. His own hobbies include watching sport, walking and cooking. Speaking about his appointment, Simon said: “I’m extremely proud of the three schools in our federation and I’m honoured to be given the opportunity to lead them. The children across our federation are delightful and always make me feel welcome with a smile on their faces. I’m therefore really excited about the next year. I believe strongly that all children should enjoy learning, be actively engaged and know what experiencing success looks and feels like. This leads to them feeling motivated and achieving well. My expectations of the pupils in terms of their achievement and behaviour are very high and I expect all members of the school community to uphold the values of our schools. There is much to achieve over the next year but we are all up for the challenges ahead. By September, at Aylestone, the Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities Faculties will have

Simon Robertson & Sue Woodrow with William Morris & Kelly Higgins (Head Boy & Head Girl at Aylestone for 2015-2016) moved into their newly refurbished accommodation, while, following the success of our involvement with Birmingham University’s ‘Jubilee Centre’, we will continue to drive forward our Values and Character Education philosophy. As a federation we will look to enhance our partnerships with all of our feeder and local primary schools still further, building on what has already been a successful year. Highlights this year include our student ambassadors visiting local primary schools and working with their pupils on literacy and numeracy, and I have already had discussions with primary head teachers about how we can develop our links even further and there are some exciting projects in the pipeline. Broadlands will be moving into their new accommodation and continuing their school improvement journey to achieve a ‘Good’ Ofsted judgement. The move, alongside us increasing our nursery provision will mean that education will be provided in two purpose built settings from 3-16 on one campus. I’m delighted that the Children’s Centre will also be moving across and this will mean that the site will become a real centre for the local community. Once established we will look to develop our community provision and I welcome the local communities thoughts on what we could provide. My main objectives though, will be to strive to maintain and build upon the unique strengths of each of our schools. My aim is for us to work together to ensure that the federation continues to provide excellent teaching and learning experiences in a happy and caring environment, resulting in good outcomes for all.”

Bishops School Prom 2015 Year 11 Leavers at Bishops School enjoyed another spectacular Prom held at the school at the end of June. The students arrived in an array of unusual and colourful vehicles – and one brave young lady arrived riding side-saddle on a beautiful horse! The guests were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of family and friends and were royally entertained by some fantastic music by the J C Jazz Trio. After enjoying a glass of bubbly (non-alcoholic, of course!), everyone went into the school hall, transformed into a wonderful marquee decorated out in Purple, Pink and Silver (colour scheme chosen by the students). A tasty three-course meal was served by staff of the school to the guests, and the much-anticipated Awards ceremony followed. The evening was topped off by a live band featuring Year 11 singers Heidi Smith, Will Thompson & Amelia Hunter performing a mixture of classic and contemporary pop tunes. 11.00pm came round all too quickly and the students left the school for the last time, heading for pastures new. Chair of the school’s Parents Staff & Friends Association Ian Strangward said: “It’s been a wonderful evening! We hope the students enjoyed their last time all together in the school and wish all of them the very best of luck for the future.” Ian went on to thank local residents for their patience whilst the arrivals were taking place: “we know it’s a little difficult for this short period of time each year, but it’s fantastic that we can continue to hold this event at the school – something which makes Bishops Prom so very different to many others held in the county”

Summer Fun raises over £2500 for School “The Friends of St Paul’s CE Primary School would like to thank everyone who attended the Summer Fun event in June. The event was enjoyed by all and the support received helped us raise over £2,500. THANK YOU. Tupsley Resident Norman Morris proudly displays his medals on the train to London to the Victory in Japan 70th Anniversary parade. 10

Students from Hereford College of Arts’ Contact Course presented Paddy Nugent, Community Fundraising Manager at St Michael’s Hospice, with a cheque for £170 following a successful cake sale at their Folly Lane Campus. The Contact Course helps students with learning difficulties to develop the skills needed for independent living, making choices and the world of work. The course includes communication and numeracy skills, as well as social and life skills. There is a strong emphasis on creativity, through art and design, media and performing arts. The sale was organised in order to raise money for charity, while also giving students the opportunity to put into practice skills they have been learning on the part-time two year course, including money handling, customer services and marketing. The charity was chosen by student Jessica Dallow, whose father was supported by the Hospice before he passed away two years ago. Jess still receives support from St. Michael’s, and wanted to repay the help they have given her and her family. Students were supported by staff and friends who donated money, cakes and supplies; Jess’ mum made some cakes, and Asda, Co-op Bobblestock, Poundworld, Poundland and the Butter Market Sweet Stall all donated produce for the students to sell.

Young Voices – Birmingham Hampton Dene’s school choir participated in this year’s ‘Young Voices’ at the Genting Arena in Birmingham. 41 pupils from the school joined forces with many other schools across the region to raise money for the ‘Clic Sargent’ cancer charity. They sang a number of songs including an Andrew Lloyd Webber medley, ‘When I grow up’ from Matilda, the Beatles’ classic ‘All you need is love’ and a tribute to Nelson Mandela. The choir is in much demand these days thanks to the dedication of their music co-ordinator Sarah Phillips.
