HRH Sophie, The Countess of Wessex meeting resident Sophie Smith and staff

ROYAL VISIT TO SOPHIE HOUSE

Martha Trust in Hereford was delighted to welcome HRH Sophie, The Countess of Wessex for a visit to Sophie House in Holywell Gutter Lane on 13th October.

Her Royal Highness went to gain an understanding of the work carried out by the Martha Trust Charity. The visit lasted an hour, during which time the Countess had an opportunity to speak to the Trustees, parents and staff and of course to meet the residents. The time seemed to go so fast but the Countess’s obvious background knowledge helped us to cover many aspects of the work we do. Sarah and Richard Smith, who founded the charity nearly 20 years ago, were particularly charmed with the interaction between the Countess and their daughter Sophie when she presented HRH with a posy of flowers from the garden. Sophie House has just celebrated its’ third year of operation. The Charity

has a total of twenty eight beds in its two purpose built nursing homes, Martha House in Old Eign Hill being the 2nd one, offering both lifelong and respite care. Residents receive a variety of therapies and activities encouraging and enabling them to develop to their own individual full potential. For everyone involved in the charity the day was the realisation of twenty years work spent building the two homes and providing excellent care and support for all the residents and their families. It was a very special day for all our guests

The charity was founded by Richard and Sarah Smith following the birth of their daughter Sophie, who was 27 years old this October. Richard and Sarah hope to inspire other people to create similar facilities across the country to help more families with profoundly disabled children requiring very specialised and detailed one to one care.

Charity Christmas Cards at All Saints

In October, HM Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Lady Darnley, officially opened the “Cards for Good Causes” seasonal shop in All Saints Church, Hereford. The shop, staffed by loyal volunteers, will run until 18 December and will support over 30 charities including St Michael’s Hospice, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, Midlands Air Ambulance and Cobalt Appeal. In keeping with the Christmas spirit, sending charity Christmas cards allows you to give twice; once to friends and family, and secondly to worthwhile causes of your choice. Initially there will be over 240 designs to choose from. From the network of shops across the country, charities have received more £20million in the past 5 years from “Cards for Good Causes”, representing at least 70p of every £1 charged for the cards.

Clergy past who returned to St Paul’s church on Sunday 15th November to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the consecration of the church. Grand Finale to St Paul’s Church 150th Anniversary Celebrations During the last 16 months St. Paul’s Church has been celebrating its 150th anniversary. It all started on a sunny July day 2014 when we commemorated the laying of the foundation stone by Lady Saye and Sele in July 1864. Each person wrote their name on a stone which was added to a cairn. This was followed by a hog roast in the community centre garden. Some people even dressed in Victorian costume. Throughout the following year we have held craft fairs, produced a calendar, sung pieces of music from each of the decades and staged a drama celebrating the history of St. Paul’s Church. Revd. John Hall-Matthews, former vicar, joined us on St. Paul’s Day, January 25. He shared memories of his time with us and joined us for lunch over which many stories were exchanged. The Sheep Festival (Tupsley means sheep’s field) brought a smile to everyone’s face as we filled the church with over a hundred sheep. To the delight of the children - and many adults - we even had a real lamb in church on Easter Sunday. June saw us holding 150 minutes of prayer led by Lay Reader Ray Walters. Revd. Carl Attwood, former curate, joined us for Midsummer Praise when he kept everyone amused with his memories of life in Tupsley. To round off our celebrations we staged an exhibition of memorabilia in October. This led to many stories and observations on the history of St. Paul’s, especially from the map of Tupsley in 1839.

‘150 Years and Onwards’ on Sunday, November 15 marked the completion of our celebrations and 150 years since the Consecration of the Church. The Rt.Revd. Richard Frith, Bishop of Hereford, preached and a pair of wooden candlesticks, made by Tim Wright a Tupsley resident, were placed on the altar. Several past clergy joined us which caused much chatter and nostalgia. During the year we have been making a commemorative wall hanging which was hung in church - 150 squares for 150 years. The service ended with children from St. Paul’s Primary School carrying their cross back to school. This begins the countdown to St Paul’s School 150th celebrations in 2018. Thanks go to all who participated in all these events making it a memorable year. Pam Pratley – Anniversary Chair

TupsleyVoice Together at Christmas: A Christmas message from the Vicar of St Paul’s Church, Tupsley :Last year I found myself rediscovering the delight of opening those fiddly little cardboard doors each morning in December – and no I don’t mean the ones with chocolate underneath! – simply retelling (with third-rate pictures of stars, donkeys etc!) the events as we step into December. Advent anticipation: waiting and savouring – like one of the differences between fast food and going out for a proper meal. Good things often involve waiting, and they’re worth it.

Family. Re-grouping, reminiscing, rediscovering one another – with the help of plenty of good food! It’s certainly a priority that Jesus himself (apparently Christmas is about him!) would have enjoyed at many special festivals as a Jew 2000 years ago, and Jews today probably do such things rather better than the rest of us. In fact there are at least two ways I know Jesus would like to stretch our own family gathering this Christmas…

We’re eagerly anticipating our first Christmas here in Tupsley – not least because we’re expecting all our children with us here for the first time. You may have seen and read about them in the last issue of Tupsley Voice. Since then we’ve had a splendid welcome here, and got to know some amazing people. In fact the effect of Tupsley has been so positive, even our Border Terrier Bramble, who seemed on has last legs before we moved, has gained a new lease of life.

First, he shocked and delighted people time and again with his stories about God as a delighted parent who, like us, longs to gather his children together, sharing their whole lives, and spending time with them. He longs to be at the very heart of your celebrations and ours, turkey, wine, chocolate and all.

Despite all that, something’s still missing – until the children have all been here. And of course it has been a huge privilege for Alison and I: being able to bring them up and continue alongside them through life so far – one which we never take for granted. Christmas, say many, is a time for the children – and doubtless a childish nostalgia is part of my advent calendar glee! And perhaps for all of us with happy childhood Christmas memories, there’s a bit of trying to find a wonder we’ve often lost. But what struck me about our own children is how early they had decided that a vital element to Christmas was simply being together.

And second – well, this has really only hit me over the last two years, in some different experiences of Christmas gatherings. Through a dear homeless friend, we have seen afresh the downside of that urge to gather in families: it’s all great if you’re in one. If not, then it’s simply the one time in the year when doors and shops are all shut, with you outside. Jesus had this amazing way of gathering families and friends together so that even outsiders felt like insiders. To be honest, I still find it quite a challenge at times… but so attractive. And far less prone to disappointment than exclusive gatherings can be. Welcome God. Welcome stranger. May your Christmas be full of the peace, warmth and welcome that Jesus brings. Rev Preb Nick Armstrong, vicar of St Paul’s Tupsley & St Andrew’s Hampton Bishop

Farewell to Revd Mandy Williams On Sunday 20th September St.Paul’s Church said farewell to a much loved lady who had been its curate for five years. As well as the usual demanding parish ministry at St.Paul’s, and St.Andrew’s at Hampton Bishop, Mandy worked in the local schools developing school worship and also set up other projects for Mums and Toddlers in and around Tupsley. Everyone who knew her will miss Mandy and pray that her new parishes in the Herefordshire ‘Hop Group’ will cherish her ministry amongst them. 4

St Paul’s Church congregation pay their respects with a short service of remembrance at Tupsley Cross

Service of Remembrance held at Tupsley Cross On remembrance Sunday St Paul’s Church, Tupsley decided for the first time to conclude their morning service by processing down to the Tupsley Cross and have a short service of remembrance with a 2 minute silence and the playing of the Last Post by Ken Tinsley of Hampton Bishop on his cornet. Fortunately the rain held off and motorists kindly avoided passing the cross whilst the service was taking place.

HCA Students who performed and organised the gig for Syria

Arts College students’ gig for Syria Early in October the Extended Diploma in Music second year students from Hereford College of Arts (HCA) performed a fundraising gig at The Venue, to raise money for Save The Children’s Syrian Crisis Appeal. The gig was also a fantastic opportunity for the students to develop their skills in performance, marketing and promotions, working with external venues and team work. Rather than the usual set up for gigs of a number of bands, students collaborated on original and cover songs in a mash up and unpredictable manner! It went down very well in the packed club, and the students were delighted to raise a profit of £230, which will be donated directly to the Syrian Crisis Appeal.

Hereford Cathedral was filled with the beautiful singing of St Paul’s school choir on Remembrance Day when they took part in the very special Words and Music Service of Remembrance with Hereford Cathedral School and Moor Park School. St Paul’s choir of forty children, many as young as six years old, represented the school with impeccable behaviour and delighted the congregation with two songs in two-part harmony as well as singing some challenging pieces as a massed choir with the other schools

Early in November a few lucky St Pauls Primary pupils went to visit Riding for Disabled at Holme Lacy. They were made very welcome by all the staff and went straight into the stables to meet all of the beautiful horses. After being fitted with hats they were given their horses to ride. The horses were called Blue, Blaze, Riley and MG. They were taught how to hold the reins properly and how to sit and turn safely. They all made new friendships with their horses and learnt how to trust each other. After riding the pupils were taken to the stables to learn all about stable management and how to care for the horses. They had all had a fantastic morning and were really excited that they were due to go back the following week to see their new friends again.

The obvious pleasure given to so many children (and adults) by the roundabouts, drink and food outlets, the bonfire and the spectacular (and very professional) 20 minute firework display and the warm community spirit amongst all who attended was a delight to see. In Our Age – Living Local History Herefordshire Lore is a voluntary group that has been collecting and publishing people’s memories since 1989. In 1994 Roy Kennett who lived in Quarry Road, Tupsley, approached Herefordshire Council for funding to start publishing In Our Age, a quarterly glossy magazine of their findings. You may have seen copies of this for free collection in council offices and libraries. In Our Age costs over £6000 a year to produce but is free because the Herefordshire Lore Group want everyone to read it. The Group relies on grants, subscriptions, donations and advertising revenue to cover the costs which are kept to a minimum by much voluntary work by Group members.

Over the years several articles and photographs of Tupsley history have appeared in In Our Age. These have included the Tupsley dairymen William Rees and White House Farm Dairy; the Isolation Hospital off Gorsty Lane; the Old Forge in Old Eign Hill and Tupsley Home Guard which we reproduce here by kind permission of Bill Laws of Hereford Lore. If you have memories and photographs of Tupsley past Tupsley Voice and Hereford Lore would be interested in possibly publishing them.

Rose Garden Christmas Fayre The Rose Garden Village, Ledbury Road, is holding its Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 19th. Loch Ness musical mysteries at Hampton Dene Primary Hampton Dene’s Y6 pupils’ spent their last week at primary school performing ‘The last Monster in Scotland’ - a musical tale written by their teacher Mick Riddell. The story is set on the shores of Loch Ness where three ‘Guardians of the Loch’ spend their days telling stories of sightings and mysterious happenings despite the intrusion of sceptical scientists, troublesome tourists and a particularly curious journalist! The children sang and performed with distinction and it was a fitting end to their primary school life. At the final assembly, they enjoyed a film tribute of their last year in school which brought a few tears to the eyes. It was also an opportunity to wish them every success for the future. TupsleyVoice Broadlands Primary’s successful move to Aylestone It’s been a busy summer on the Aylestone School site with Broadlands Primary moving into their new school. Pupils, staff and parents at Broadlands Primary are thrilled with their new school after the start of term saw them moving into purpose built accommodation which was once part of the Aylestone School site. One boy told his teacher, “I’ve told my dad I love this new school every night since the first day we moved in.” After the local authority agreed the move to be economically the best solution to an ageing old Broadlands site off Prospect Walk, the refurbishment and the Scandinavian-style extension was built in ‘record time’ with contractors pulling out all the stops to get the buildings ready for the start of term. Executive Headteacher, Simon Robertson, said, “Broadlands moving onto the Aylestone site, alongside increasing our nursery provision means that education is provided in two purpose built settings from 3-16 on one campus. I’m delighted that the Children’s Centre has also moved across meaning that the site will become a real centre for the local community.” The new school has the seal of approval of parents with glowing testimony from one who said, “They’ve done a marvellous job. We’d hoped it would be good for the children but it has surpassed our expectations.

Bishop’s School Rugby Reunion The weekend of March 19th – 21st will be a major celebration and a reunion of those who played rugby for Bishop’s School. 2016 will be the 50th anniversary of Rugby at the school. It will no doubt be a reunion weekend for all the attendees to remember for a long time. An great opportunity to rekindle friendships. Booking details for the Dinner and the arrangements for the rugby will be on the school web site early in the New Year.

The Core Roller Skating Flourishes in Tupsley The community funded roller skating centre The Core based in Folly Trading Estate continues to develop and f lourish and is proving to be very popular. It won a bid for £75,000 to renovate the building and this has been used for new lights, a new ceiling, a mezzanine f loor and a new roller skating f loor. They will be having an official opening of our new f loor in the New Year, inviting the British Artistic roller skating squad to come and try out the f loor. See the web site www.skatehereford.co.uk for full details of activities.

Mary and Mark Oliver in their prize winning garden

Tupsley’s prize winning garden Mary Oliver and her son Mark of Wellington Place can rightly claim to be Hereford’s number one gardeners after their garden (front and back) was judged the best in the overall category for the 3rd successive year in the 2015 Hereford in Bloom competition. During the summer the front of their house was beautifully decorated with hanging baskets and potted plants overflowing with colour. The beauty of the front garden was however outshone by the height and depth of flowers and foliage in the back garden. Although the back garden is only small it contains a pergola (useful for hanging even more baskets), and a huge variety of very tall and small plants which have been sourced far across the country and Alpine Europe. In total there were around 200 pot plants and hanging baskets. The height, depth and cluster of foliage in the rear garden has created a micro climate and together with several greenhouses has allowed them to grow a very large number of tropical plants such as bananas, cannas, gingers, figs, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, mandarins and other citrus fruits as well as apples and pears. In the centre of the garden virtually hidden from view from any of the surrounding houses by the foliage is a deep fish pond with a good stock of fish. Alongside is a garden table and chairs to have a quiet drink or meal on a recently fitted artificial lawn which always looks green and immaculately trimmed. Mary has been developing her garden for over 50 years. She and Mark try and bring something new to add to the garden every year and this year tried growing hostas in hanging baskets. They are always on the lookout for unusual plants and their collection includes many cacti and even a few orchids. Whilst Mary mainly tends the plants Mark does the landscaping. By fitting a comprehensive automatic watering system he and Mary save much time and use 85% less water than when they used a hose pipe. They love to share their garden with visitors and especially delight in having an Open Garden on a Saturday afternoon in late July to raise money for a charity. In 2015 they raised £410 for Blackmarston School. Look out for the date of the 2016 Open Garden in the Summer Issue of Tupsley Voice. TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2015 | 11
