Christmas Day 8am Holy Communion (no carols) at St Paul’s 10am Worship on Christmas Morning at URC (led by Roger Woodall) 10am Family Communion at St Paul’s

Christmas should last all year As I walked through town the other day I noticed that the Christmas decorations are being put up. Maybe the beginning of November is not too soon to dig round in that special hiding place where we stored last year’s decorations. Some decorations will certainly need replacing. Sentimental reasons often prevent me from throwing away decorations that are past their best – you will know the sort, coloured paper Santa’s, tissue paper stars, paper straw stars all made by the children in years past. The Christmas wish list will need revising, simply because the children are a year older and their tastes have moved on. I dread asking ‘What would you like Santa to bring you this year?’ Technology has moved on; so too the prices asked. Still, Christmas only comes round once a year – or does it? If we truly want to share in the real joy of Christmas we need to think beyond the brief holiday period. We need to allow the Christmas spirit to grow in us throughout the remainder of the year. That way it will last longer than the holiday and might even change our lives in the months to come. One of the messages that the angels on our Christmas cards will bring is that of, ’Peace on Earth’. It is a stark reminder that society was made for better things than it ever manages to achieve. How realistic then is it to expect ‘Peace on Earth’? Daily the various areas of conflict around the world seem to remind us that violence appears to be part of the normal condition. To seek ‘Peace on Earth’ though, is not being absurdly naive. It is to seek a change in the causes of conflict – the collision of competing values, the desire to insist that your way is the only right way. Conflict creates winners and losers, which in itself sets the scene for future conflicts. To be frank, the moral climate of the world is forever changing and the desires of the many different peoples of the world are different. The conditions for a permanent world peace will probably never exist. It is precisely because that is so that the message of the angels at the birth of the baby Jesus heralded a supernatural event. The normal state of the world’s fractious communities is suspended, and the Peace of God, which is a peace in the hearts of human kind, touched the world. The angels gathered in the stable, round the crib, to witness the descent of God to the earth. The miracle was not that conflict and violence immediately ceased but that thereafter men and women were able to receive the greater Peace of God into their hearts. It is that gift which the infant Jesus still holds out, amidst the searing daily chaos which we have made of the world he gave us. If we take the message of Christmas to our hearts, then it has to last longer than the holiday, it has to change us and the way we interact with those around us. That is the only way there is a possibility of ‘Peace on Earth’. Revd. Martin Hardy, Minister Hampton Park URC

TupsleyVoice WASSAIL invites New Spirits into Lower House Farm Orchard - Friday 13th January Herefordshire Wildlife Trust will be offering a bit of postChristmas cheer and seek to ensure a bountiful apple harvest with its annual Wassail at Lower House Farm, Ledbury Road, Tupsley, on Friday 13th January 2017, from 5.00 to 8.00pm. Wassailing is an ancient ceremonial celebration of the apple harvest which seeks to bless the fruit trees in traditional orchards. So come help the Trust to awaken the cider apple trees in its orchard and scare away the evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit in the autumn. There will be a chance to sample some of Orchard Origins’ mulled cider and apple juice and warming food from Hereford’s very own Rocket Café to beat the cold. There will also be fun activities for children too, including some night games, fun with glow-sticks and sparklers and the chance to toast some marshmallows and make some popcorn on the fire. The procession will set off at 5.30pm and food will be served from 6.15pm when our merry band of musicians will again perform some wassailing songs around the fire. A presentation of the Trust’s volunteer awards will take place at 6.40pm. This event is once more being held largely as a thank you to the Trust’s volunteers who continue to give so much of their time, be it on reserves, in the office, in the Queenswood shop, working at public engagement events or helping to enter data records. But as last year, the Wassail is again being run as an open public event, inviting members and non-members alike to join in the fun. Please dress warmly, wear sturdy footwear and remember to bring torches for yourself and your children, who will need them for the children’s activities. Do also bring something you can bang to make a lot of noise, such as a metal dustbin lid or a metal spoon, in order to chase away the evil spirits during the wassail ceremony! There is no entry charge but all donations received will go towards supporting the work of the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust. Refreshments will be an additional cost.

Hospice at Home Sitters Needed ST MICHAEL’S HOSPICE is looking for Volunteer Sitters to support their new Herefordshire Hospice at Home Service. Sitters are needed to provide companionship and support to patients and families in their homes and would suit anyone who could spare 3-4 hours a week or a fortnight. Experience of care is not a pre-requisite and no personal care is required. Training will be provided (the next course will take place in the Spring). Sitters need to have access to their own transport (mileage to be paid by Hospice) and will have to undertake an enhanced DBS check. For more information, please contact the Coordination Hub on 01432 852080 or e mail hhh@st-michaels-hospice.org.uk 4

Curate Revd Mark Inglis moves to Tenbury Wells Anyone who has been to Tenbury Wells, or knows the history of the place and St Michael’s church in particular, will know that Revd Mark Inglis (curate at St Paul’s Tupsley) and his family are very lucky to have moved there. Mark recently left Tupsley and Hampton Bishop and was licensed on 21 September as Team Vicar in the Tenbury Wells Group of Churches. For the next few years he will focus on mission and outreach and in trying to establish new work and new projects throughout the various churches and communities. Mark was well-loved in Tupsley - with his dry sense of humour, his ability to make bacon sandwiches and his chanting of the Peruvian Gloria being particularly memorable assets. Admitted, he led a wonderful service and gave some very thought-provoking sermons. I don’t think there is anyone in the congregation at St Paul’s or St Andrew’s who can honestly say they haven’t learnt something from Mark. So, the family moved to the vicarage in Tenbury Wells - a week later than planned, due to a worryingly uneven floor that needed checking. The timing of the move meant that trips to and from Hereford were frequent. Rory (Mark’s son) had drama every evening at the Courtyard for the first 4 weeks in preparation for his role in Lord of the Flies; meanwhile, Catriona (Mark’s daughter) is continuing her studies at Hereford Sixth Form College as she looks to apply for Liberal Arts or Theology course at some of the country’s top universities next year; wife Sam, continues her work as Head of Humanities at Aylestone School. The journey takes between 35 minutes and an hour, although Catriona speaks fondly of the journey one foggy evening which took 1 1/2 hours, since Sam couldn’t find the fog lights in the new car! In Catriona’s words, her dad is “meeting people and taking services”. A large part of his job involves getting out into the community and so he is apparently “meeting with everyone on the planet” to find areas of need for the local community. It sounds like the perfect job for Mark. We wish him and the rest of the family all the very best of luck, and hope he will come back to visit and keep in touch.

Review of Parliament’s Constituency Boundaries As I put finger to keyboard the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham is in full swing. For the first time I have found myself having to explain government policy as a Minister. It really puts you on your mettle! But—as in Parliament—one ends up really appreciating the public accountability that is built into our political system. In that spirit, you may have heard that there is currently a review of the constituency boundaries for MPs across the country. The Boundary Review feels fiddly and technical, and in part it is. But it is also a crucial part of our democracy. People move around during the course of their lives, and the effect of this over time is that some constituencies have thousands more voters than others. This means that individual votes count for less in some places than in others. While we will never have an absolutely perfect system, that imbalance cannot be right. If it is not addressed, it amounts to gerrymandering by stealth.

The Boundary Commission is an independent body, and it should be applauded for its professional and nonpartisan work. That work is an important step towards restoring fairness to our voting system. In relation to my own constituency of Hereford and South Herefordshire, I have reviewed the plans in detail, and they seem thoroughly sensible. The Commission did not have much scope for change, because the constituency is bounded to the west by Wales and to the south by Gloucestershire, and these are treated as separate areas under the legislation. The proposal rightly keeps the Golden Valley as a whole within the constituency, and it preserves the important link between Ross-on-Wye and the city of Hereford. However, what really matter are not my views, but yours: the views of the public. A twelve-week consultation period started on 13 Sep, and runs until 6th December. Four public meetings were held across the West Midlands in November. All the information can be found online at www.bce2018.org. uk or by calling the Commission on 0207 276 1102. Finally, please do spread the word amongst friends and family so that as many local people as possible, whatever their views, have a chance to take part. Jesse Norman MP

[Editor – Tupsley Voice apologises to its readers that this article was received after our last Autumn Issue was published so it is probably too late now for you to take part in this initial consultation. But do not despair. The website states that “All feedback from the initial consultation will then be published in early 2017, followed by a four week consultation period during which the public are invited to comment on that feedback. The Commission will then review all comments from the initial and secondary consultation to revise the proposed boundaries. In late 2017/early 2018 there will be a third period of consultation lasting eight weeks, where the public will be invited to comment on the revised proposals. After looking at whether any more changes need to be made, in September 2018 the Commission will make final recommendations in a report published and presented to the Parliament.”]

Tell us about your news or event For inclusions please email your information to tupsleyvoice@hotmail.co.uk The Spring Issue copy deadline is Friday 10th February. Publication will be on 4th March. Send us details of events to take place before or very soon after the Summer Issue publication date of 3rd June as well as reports of past events.

TupsleyVoice “Stop the Drop” – Herefordshire Council Litter is everywhere and spoils our surroundings, it’s harmful to humans and wildlife and costs a lot of money to pick up every year. In Herefordshire we spend around £1 million each year on clearing up litter. . This cost is completely avoidable and this money (your money) could be spent on better things. Stop the Drop, Herefordshire Council’s anti- litter campaign, is encouraging everyone to take responsibility for disposing of their litter properly and help to make this county litter free by organising or taking part in community litter picks. Litter packs, with litter pickers, gloves, high visibility vests and labelled bags can be borrowed from Balfour Beatty at no charge and they will also collect the litter after your litter pick.

When she was only 7 years old she was asked to join the Medalist Team. Lucia also took part in the Blackpool Ballroom and Latin Competition She performed 2 dances, the Quickstep and the Jive. St Paul’s School’s Dahlicious Dress up Day Friday 7 October was St Paul’s School’s Dahlicious Dress up Day. Over 300 children and staff took part by coming to school dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character, or just wearing Dahl’s favourite colour – yummy yellow. For the privilege of doing that (and not having to wear school uniform) they each donated £1 to be shared between Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity and the purchase of new non-fiction books for the school library. As a result the school was able to send the magnificent sum of £160 to the Charity which helps to make life better for seriously ill children and young people all around the UK.

Olympian Inspires Students to Chase their Dreams Hereford Sixth Form College was delighted to welcome Olympic Silver Medallist, Ruaridh McConnochie recently. Ruaridh, part of Team GB Rugby 7s squad at Rio, delivered a fascinating talk to the College’s Elite Athletes. He touched on how he got into the sport, the training, nutrition, competition, drug testing and travelling. Ruaridh’s anecdotes from Rio held everyone in awe and really helped paint a picture of life at an Olympic games.

Children hard at work painting their Diwali workshop pots All year groups visited Tillington Fruit farm and found out about where food comes from and how to make the most of local produce available.

Ruaridh was extremely generous with his time and students were given a photo opportunity and a chance to take a look at the Olympic Silver Medal. Later he led a training session with the College’s Rugby Academy, in particular, working with the Backs on their passing and handling skills. This was followed by a lively Q&A session. Andy Douthwaite, Head of PE, said “It is always a pleasure to welcome elite athletes into the Department as their journey allows our students to see that anything is possible if they are prepared to strive for their dreams.’’

What a fantastic night! The Bonfire Night at the Quarry exceeded all expectations. The crowds keep coming in from all over the county which resulted in our highest ever attendance which created a great atmosphere. The enormous bonfire provided some warmth on a very cold night and everyone’s patience was rewarded by a spectacular firework display which lasted for approx. 20 minutes and drew gasps of wonder and admiration from everyone. The comments and photos added on Facebook gave the Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) positive feedback for which we are very appreciative. Thank you, and so thrilled that a great time was had by all. There are so many people to thank for their roles in making Bonfire Night such a success. Without everyone’s support, we would not be to make this event as great as it was. The residents for their support and patience. The very many volunteers, including the EPICS from Close House. Everyone was amazing and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves so much that you will join us again next year. Thank you to everyone who attended who donated so freely, and who brought along their good humour and friendliness. Because of you, we can do this again next year. To the additional food stalls who helped to feed the crowds and donated some of the proceeds. Thank you. And of course our sponsors. Niteforce Fireworks for the design, the training and the fireworks; Tupsley Butchers for their yummy sausages; Total Produce for their delicious rolls and onions; the donation from The Victory public house; and to Arrow Plant and Tool Hire, Mercia Radio Telephones, and Hampton Hire for their special charging rates. To you all, a big thank you from CTCG. TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2016 | 9

TupsleyVoice It’s all go at the Whitehouse Community Hub.

Over £600 raised at Whitehouse Autumn Fair

What a transformational year it’s been for the Whitehouse and Whittern Way, and Shirley and the Ambassadors are happy to have been a part of the action. So many people have said what fun they had at the Playing Out session on October 1st that Shirley is at it again, only this time Santa is due to show up too, complete with a bike pulled sleigh. So if you missed out the first time around, come and shake, rattle and roll again this winter with Shirley and the Bicycle Ambassadors on Wednesday 21st December. However you roll, be it on foot, with a walking frame, by bike or scooter you are welcome to join in the fun, food, music and dancing and Santa’s Slow Sleigh ride. Fun from 10a.m. on Wednesday 21st December 2016.

The Whitehouse held its first Autumn Fair on the 15th October which raised just over £600. Thank you to the Co-op on the Ledbury Rd which donated the first prize of a hamper for the raffle, plus a generous voucher to spend in the shop, won by Mrs Griffiths of Whitehouse Way. The Tupsley Butchers kindly donated pork pies for the very popular ploughman’s lunches. The Community Hub committee were also very grateful to Hereford Arts group, Close House, and the many volunteers and members of the community who donated their time or prizes. The money raised will go towards the ongoing renovations.

Why wait until December, we are having crafty fun and bike filled sessions with Carnival Arts from now through till next March. Just look for the bunting to see if we are in or message us on Facebook at Shirley’s Wheels to join a ride or one of our crafty winter sessions. And last, but definitely not least, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who made the October Shake Rattle and Roll event such fun. Our special thanks to the Co-op Ledbury Road and College Road for all your support and the ingredients that made the pizza and the day so special. Shake, Rattle and Roll with Shirley and the Bicycle Ambassadors again, and Santa too, on Wednesday 21st December 2016 at the Whitehouse from 10am. to 4pm. See you soon.

Every 2nd Monday afternoon, the ‘Whitehouse Tea Club’ meet 2pm until 4pm. By the time you read this Brian and Barbara Hatton of the ‘Greenfield’s Africa’ charity will have given a talk about their work among the poorest of people. This includes providing clothes for babies, fighting an ongoing battle against crippling Jiggers and refurbishing old tools for Uganda. Every 4th Monday, between 2pm and 4pm,’Kemble Care’ hold an afternoon of activities with refreshments. Local residents are welcomed to both afternoons. As with all community activities, there is an on-going need for volunteers, both skilled and unskilled. Particularly pressing is a need for help with the ever growing Tea Club and Wednesday afternoon ‘Drop In’ sessions. Please contact us if you would like to get involved and make new friends, we would love to meet you. Your time, however small, is a gift to us and your community. Some up-coming events include a Christmas Carols Café on 3rd December at 5pm with Carols & readings while enjoying a great cuppa together in the Whitehouse. And there’s another Shake Rattle and Roll event hosted by Shirley’s Wheels, the Hereford Carnival Arts and the Playing Out team. Carol Teasdale

St Paul’s Primary had a truly Golden Assembly!

Sascha Kindred, our local legend, returned to St Paul’s school and shared stories about his time in Rio whilst representing Team GB at the Paralympic Games. With a captivated audience, he talked through the roller coaster of emotions which he travelled along during the Medley qualifying round for the f inal and the eventual jubilation as he won a Gold medal. Sascha proudly revealed his medal at the end of his recount, which led to a massive round of applause! Having Sascha at the Friday Celebration Assembly, allowed sixteen lucky children to receive the Gold Certif icate from a Gold Paralympic medallist, what a moment for them to remember forever! Sincere thanks to pupil Rosie and her family for enabling the school to experience two fabulous assemblies with Sascha. TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2016 | 11
