Open Garden at Wellington Place Once again Mary, Gerald and Mark Oliver are opening their exotic garden to the public at 41 Wellington Place, Tupsley, HR1 1SW on Saturday 29th July from 2-6pm (opposite the Scout Hut). The garden has won Hereford in Bloom awards for several years and a visit should not be missed. They have opened their prize winning garden for over 20 years to raise funds for local charaties. Unfortunately their opening in 2016 had to be cancelled at the last minute due to sudden serious illness to Mary Oliver. There are many exotic plants, containers and baskets to see including pergola supporting
trailing plants and hanging baskets There is so much foliage and flora at a high level almost hiding adjacent properties that it is easy to imagine that the garden is in the middle of the countryside. Craft items, plants and refreshments will be available to buy. This year the money raised will go towards a defibrillator unit to be installed at the Salvation Army hall.

TupsleyVoice St Paul’s Church Drive Vehicle and Pedestrian Survey
Richard Binnersley of Brightwell’s Auctioneers busy selling the items donated to St Paul’s church drive auction, watched and assisted by Jeannie Shave.
Grand Auction helps fund Church Drive project An auction of items and promises given to raise funds for the repair and resurfacing of the drive and car park at St.Paul’s Church was held on Saturday February 25th in the Church Community Centre. Due to its use by a very large number of cars the driveway has in recent years become seriously potholed and the essential repairs will be expensive. The drive is used extensively by many hundreds of cars and people each weekday during term time to deliver and collect children from the Breakfast and After School Clubs and the Nursery School and, contrary to the church’s wishes due to the danger to pedestrians of too many cars, to St Paul’s and Bishop’s schools. Less frequently many cars also use the drive when their occupants attend one of the functions held in the Community Centre and of course the church for weddings, funerals, baptisms, Sunday services, and the graveyard. The idea of an auction was the brainchild of two church members, Pat Rawson and Jeannie Shave, but the initiative was picked up by Paddy Shave and Martyn Rawson and many others who helped to set it up. Richard Binnersley from Brightwells gave his time and his professional services as the auctioneer. Vernon Davies, a Tupsley Electrician, very kindly offered to safety check the many items of electrical equipment that had been donated. The multitude of items given for the sale ranged from a deluxe mobility scooter to simple glass vases. A Wedgwood dinner service, chairs, a pram and cot, children’s toys, a sparkling chandelier standard lamp, and a Panasonic large screen TV set were just some of the many donated lots. There were vouchers from local businesses and offers of services, teas, and a stay at a country cottage. After a busy Friday evening of preparation the Saturday afternoon proved a great success; there was fun, chat, and excellent refreshments prepared and served by the lovely ladies of the church. Over £2000 was raised by the sale and this will be a welcome start for the drive repair fund but unfortunately a long way short of the many thousands of pounds that will be needed. 4

St Paul’s Church drive has deteriorated very badly in the last couple of years and desperately needs to be repaired and resurfaced. The cost will be considerable and the church council is seeking grants to help pay the cost. Because it is mainly used by the whole community rather than just those attending church services it is believed that community grants may be available. To support such applications a vehicle and pedestrian census was carried out from dawn till dusk by 32 members of the church congregation from 12 – 19 May. This was done to demonstrate how many vehicles and pedestrians use the drive to access the Church, Community Centre and the Schools. The census required a lot of conscientious and dedicated work but hopefully the dedication of the surveyors will pay dividends and not result in the church members having to pay most of the costs. At the time of going to press the results of the survey are still being analysed. The next step is the handing out of a very short questionnaire to those who use the church drive so that the grant application can include a feedback from the users of the drive. If you kindly take a questionnaire please make an effort to complete it and return it to the church. There will be a collection box in the old entrance porch to the church for you to use if no-one is on duty to collect it, as there will be in the days immediately following its distribution in early June.

Aylestone Park is a delightful place on the Northern outskirts of Hereford City on the North side of Aylestone Hill alongside the main road to Worcester, only a short distance from many Tupsley homes. It consists of 47 acres of mixed park land and is well worth a visit. The lower section is adjacent to a small section of the restored Hereford to Gloucester canal and has two large car parks for those that wish to drive there. There is mainly open green space in this lower area with a well equipped play area for young children. Hard stoned paths create interesting walks both on the level, including a canal side path through dense trees to College road, and up a gentle incline to a Native Herefordshire Orchard. More paths continue to an upper wildlife habitat area with many varieties of trees and shrubs and a brilliant timber viewing point complete with a telescope to look over the Lugg meadows and beyond. To maintain this wonderful resource there is an active group of volunteers coordinated by a small committee and kept informed by a Facebook page entitled ‘Aylestone Park’. The volunteers have mown grass, planted trees, pruned hedges, put up nest boxes and kept litter under control. The current project is the construction of a 4metre square gazebo being erected on the upper slopes for use as a storm shelter.
It is a great venue for dog walking, exercising, kite f lying and nature watching. Do visit, you will be surprised how many do, especially with their dogs that enjoy meeting and playing with Tell us about your each other. It truly is a news or event friendly place to socialise. TupsleyVoice College Principal booked to make Two Appearances at Hay Festival As Tupsley Voice went to press Jonathan Godfrey, Principal of Hereford Sixth Form College, was due to make two appearances at the Hay Festival this year. Dr Godfrey said, “I was delighted to be asked by Hay Festival organiser, Peter Florence, to contribute to the series of events based on the theme of Reformation to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s theses and also to contribute to the discussion about how we can value teachers sponsored by the University of Worcester.” A wonderful aerial photo of St Michaels Hospital following its recent extension taken from a drone by Trevor Horsley from Viewfrontiers.
Hospice Open Gardens Many people in Herefordshire are, and will continue, working tirelessly in their beautifully landscaped gardens for the next month or so to ensure that they are at their peak of attractiveness when they open them for a day, many with tea and cakes to raise funds for St Michaels Hospice. If you love flowers and gardens do make an effort to visit at least one of them this summer to support their efforts and reward them with a bumper fund to give for the wonderful work done at St Michaels Hospice. You will have a lovely day out and not be disappointed. Some are large gardens that are rarely open to the public such as Pant Hall, Presteigne (24 June); Homme House, Much Marcle (29 June) a popular wedding venue; Belmont Abbey, Hereford (30 July); and Stokesay Court, Onibury (7/8 Oct). Most of the others are small private gardens mostly centred on a village that are all open on the same day with a single nominally priced ticket to visit them all (children u12 free). For example there are10 gardens in Bosbury (10 June); 12 gardens in Dorstone (10/11 June); 9 gardens in Llangrove (17 June) and 3 gardens in Burghill (9 July). For full details see the Web Site:- st-michaels-hospice.org.uk -> Events -> Open Gardens , ring the Hospice Fundraising Team on 01432 851 000 or best of all pick up a brochure from Hereford Library. All receipts will be given to the Hospice.

Dr Jonathan Godfrey, Principal of Hereford Sixth Form College with Professor Marcus du Sautoy, Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. Here are the listings from this year’s Hay Festival Programme: Dr Godrey together with Professor David Green, Vice Chancellor of University of Worcester, and Taylor Cornes, a recent graduate teacher of Worcester University, were programmed to discuss “Is Teaching Still a Valued Profession?” on Wednesday 31 May. Then on Friday 2nd June it was planned that Dr Godfrey would be interviewed by Peter Florence the Founder and Director of Hay Festivals about Reformation in Education. Godfrey champions a radical vision, not only for the delivery through state and independent sector schooling, but for the very purpose of education in the UK. Jonathan Godfrey is one of the most highly regarded educationalists in Britain. He chaired England’s representative body for all sixth form colleges, the Council of the Sixth Form Colleges Association, and for 20 years has been Principal of Hereford Sixth Form College –inaugural winner of the TES Sixth Form College of the year award.

Hereford for UK City of Culture 2021 –We’ve got the welly for it! After months of consultation and late night meetings refining Hereford’s submission to be UK City of Culture in 2021 the bid was sent off to the Department of Media, Culture & Sport (DCMS) in time for the all-important deadline of 28th April. Clare Wichbold, from the Herefordshire Cultural Partnership, who leads the bid writing working group said:- “It’s been a long, but incredibly exciting process to bring the bid together. It shows that Herefordshire is a special place but with big ambitions. We want the opportunity to achieve these ambitions, and City of Culture is a great way to do it. So many people as well as me have contributed their time, energy and passion to produce a bid of which we are very proud”. Every four years a British city wins the title of ‘UK City of Culture’. The title is designed to use culture as a catalyst for economic and social regeneration and raise the profile of arts and creativity locally and across the country. The first award was made in 2013, with Derry/Londonderry the inaugural UK City of Culture and this year Hull is UK City of Culture 2017. Winning the title would mean we would create a year-long party of amazing events and festivals in our communities for everyone to access – the spotlight will be on Herefordshire on a national and international scale. It would stimulate jobs, boost businesses and increase the county’s tourist industry. It would create outstanding opportunities for young people and turbo-charge what makes Herefordshire great for everyone. It would leave a lasting legacy and create long-term benefits. ‘We’ve got the welly for it’ creates a playful vibe on what makes us great in this county: resourceful, resilient and proud. It is a reflection of our rural environment and the grass roots energy that we see throughout the county – from our food and drink entrepreneurs through to the team behind the new university, this county has so much to shout out about. Our welly revolution has only just started so there is plenty of time for more people to get involved by posting welly pictures on social media (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook),using the hashtags #thewellyforit #hereford2021. This is meant to be fun, playful, colourful or quirky so let the imagination take over!

TupsleyVoice St Paul’s String Orchestra at The Courtyard St Paul’s Primary School String Orchestra under the directorship of Sarah Heins and Ruth Hayden-Cox, were invited to play in the Hereford Performing Arts Gala Concert at the Courtyard in April, having been awarded an ‘Outstanding’ in the string class earlier in the week. It was an amazing experience for the children to play to a packed house, attended by the Mayor and Lady Darnley.
Bishop’s School Prom 2017 Class 4C release rescued hedgehogs back into the wild Dr Sasha Norris from Herefordshire Wildlife Rescue came to St Paul’s school in April to return two rescued hedgehogs to our school. They had been trapped by our perimeter fences in the autumn, and she had looked after them while they recovered and during their hibernation. However, before they could be released, we had to make sure our site was safe for them, so three firemen from the Herefordshire Fire & Rescue Service came to our school with strong cutting equipment to make some holes in the fence. Children from Class 4C watched as the noisy angle-grinder made sparks fly up! Some children tried using the enormous bolt-cutters too. Together, we made plenty of hedgehog-sized holes to help them move safely around our site. Then Sasha showed us the two hedgehogs. The larger female hedgehog was very lively and confident. We were all allowed to gently touch her spikes. She was really beautiful! The smaller male had grown a lot since the autumn, but stayed curled up very tightly. After wishing them luck, we watched as they were released into the undergrowth at the side of the field. It was good to see them heading off into the wild once more. Hedgehogs are currently in decline in the UK. To encourage these fascinating creatures into your garden, you need to make sure that there are gaps in fences and gates where they can get in, as they need to roam through many gardens each night into order to find enough to eat. We made our holes 15cm x 15cm. Hedgehogs also need areas of undergrowth and plenty of dry leaves to make their hibernation nest in the autumn – so don’t be afraid to leave an untidy area of your garden for them!
Rescued Hedgehog ready to be returned to the wild by St Paul’s pupils
We’d like to say a really big thank you to Sasha who looked after our hedgehogs over the winter while they recovered, and the firemen who helped make our school safer for them.

On the evening of Friday 7th July, Tupsley residents around Hampton Dene Road are likely to see some unusual vehicles on the roads. Yes, Prom season is almost upon us, and the Year 11 students at Bishops School will be returning on the 7th after completing their GCSE exams for one last night of celebrations before moving on to pastures new in the Autumn. They will be treated to a three-course meal in luxurious surroundings, followed by an awards ceremony with a difference and then will dance the rest of the evening away. Organised by the school’s Parents, Staff & Friends Association (PSFA), the event is one of the highlights of the summer term, with a considerable turnout of onlookers expected to see the guests arrive. PSFA Chair Ian Strangward says: “we have no idea what modes of transport may be planned, but I’ll guarantee there will be some surprises in there! As always we will work to minimise the disruption to local residents but would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience for those couple of hours in the early evening on 7th July.” Anyone coming along to watch the arrivals is asked to consider both local residents and general safety if parking near the school.

1930’s photo from Southbank Road looking towards the spire of St Paul’s Church, Tupsley - note how few houses there were in Tupsley at the time.”
Tupsley Past
News from the Whitehouse Hub
Following Tupsley Voice’s request for information and photographs of Tupsley past this photograph was kindly loaned by Margaret Bentley Leek (nee Powell ) of Elgar Ave who moved to 11 Church Road, Tupsley at the age of 9 and attended St Paul’s Primary School when Mr Croome was headmaster, living in the existing school house, and the “dreaded” Miss Lane was a teacher. The photo was believed to have been taken in the mid 1930’s from Southbank Road looking directly towards St Paul’s church spire in Church Road. On the top right horizon can just be seen, poking above a tree, the tall chimney of the Brickworks at what is now The Quarry. The fields in the foreground now contain all the houses in Pilley Road. In the centre of the photo beyond the fields are the newly built houses on the West & East side of Ledbury Road , in the 100 metre stretch south of Tupsley Cross. Just to the left of these houses can be seen Ivy House, home for orphan boys, in Ledbury Road which was just south of Tupsley Cross, where Ivy Close is now situated. On the right are the houses on the West side of Ledbury Road south (city side) of the current Pilley Road junction with Ledbury Road. Across Ledbury Road rising up the hill can be seen the houses under construction in Backbury Road, but none of the houses in Dormington Drive and Weston Close had yet been built.
Life at the Whitehouse is interesting and fun and continues to evolve with its activities. We were very excited to take 2nd place in the Hereford City Council Awards this year and were proud to have had a special mention with regard to the way that activities at the hub have been combating loneliness and isolation, especially among older people.
On the left of the photograph can be seen a large house(s), presumably in Folly Lane and presumably now demolished. Can anyone identify this house and perhaps anything else in the photo? Quite a few people have contacted Tupsley Voice to say they have information and are waiting to be interviewed, so more of “Tupsley Past” can be expected in future issues. If you have any information about Tupsley, especially photographs of scenery or events more than say 60 years ago, please contact the Tupsley Voice Editor at tupsleyvoice@ hotmail.co.uk or Tel: 01432 357 770.
The hub was presented with a cheque of £500 and the committee is yet to decide how it will be spent. We will keep you posted. We are grateful to our volunteers who have made this Award possible, with special thanks to the Hub’s chairman Keith Davenport and his wife Anita who have given an extraordinary amount of time and effort to the project, and to Councillor Marcelle Lloyd for her help in applying for the Award. We have just been informed that we will be receiving a share of the Co-operative Society Communities fund in this round of giving. If you have a Co-op store card, we would appreciate it if you would dedicate your share to the Whitehouse Community Hub. You can do this by logging into your account. It is a very quick process and doing so will make such a difference to the amount we will receive. Thank you so much. Sadly Ange Tyler has resigned from our Board. Ange, who is also a member of the Ely charity and founder member of the Whitehouse Board, has worked relentlessly over the years on our behalf. We would like to thank her for her dedication and for the many skills that she brought to the project. We wish Ange well and ask that you continue to support the wonderful work of Ely, a Tupsley charity. Following the success of our community Fish and Chip Supper we were inspired to join in with the Big Breakfast on May 20th, to raise funds for Christian Aid Week. Joanne Child and Carol Teasdale attended the recent ‘Creative Ageing’ event at the Courtyard to investigate the possibility of bringing exchangeable craft boxes into the Hub, so that people can have a taste of all kinds of crafts.
