The Core – Roller Skating Centre The Core Roller Skating Centre at Foley Trading Estate, a community project set up in 2014, is going from strength to strength and we are delighted to still be serving the community. 2017 saw us putting on more skating sessions and seeing more people. Our first ever New Year’s Eve party was very successful. We were proud that so many families chose to spend the night with us and so we are already planning something special for New Year 2018. 2017 was a huge step forward in our junior Roller Derby

team, “The Poison Berries”, when 8 of our team were selected to play for Team England. In February they were part of the world’s first international line and played an exhibition match at The Roller Derby World Cup (See photo of the team). Our monthly toddler disco is also very popular, a non-skating event for parents and tots to meet, mix and have fun. We have just finished planning this year’s Easter camp where skaters aged 7 and over can learn to skate,

have fun and meet new friends. See advert page 4. This is our second Easter Camp and we are hoping to build on last year’s successful event. We are also hosting Big Board Game Day on Sat 19th May from 11am -11pm to raise money for the NSPCC.

Photo: A mixed junior team, including 8 Hereford “England” players, ready to play an exhibition match at a recent Roller Derby World Cup event.

The Core is built on community and we have lots of events and different sessions planned. We always need input and guidance so if there is something we can offer just get in touch. The Core management team.

According to a well publicised slimming group, such an indulgence in chocolate is classed as a “sin”. Curiously, in churchy circles, we all know about “sin” so I shouldn’t be that surprised. Our sinful nature is just that, it is part and parcel of our very being. Sin is inseparable from our being and has its roots in our faults. We often do not recognise these faults and therefore cannot do anything about them or put right through our own efforts. Have you not noticed that it is often those close to us that point out our errors? Christianity recognises that inner struggle and also recognises that a perfect version of humanity, purged of evil, is simply unrealistic.

All routes will be fully signposted, and our team of marshals will be positioned along the path ready to help you on your way.

I was a bit put out to discover that Easter eggs are already in the shops. I know that Easter is earlier this year, but, I haven’t yet finished my stash of Christmas chocolate!

Take one of the most beautiful times of the year, and the picturesque backdrop of the undulating Herefordshire countryside. Combine the two and you have the St Michael’s Hospice Big Spring Walk.

A thought for Easter

Tupsley Voice has had more than one letter from readers who were pleased to learn in the Winter Issue that it is Tupsley WI that place fresh flowers each month on Tupsley Cross. The writers all greatly appreciated the beauty of the flowers, the reflection they induced, and the dedication of the Tupsley WI in doing this for so many years.

At Easter time we begin to recognise that the sacrifice of Christ Jesus is a gift, the most perfect gift the world will ever know. Holy Week is a good time to spend a moment of reflection each day, to recollect our own catalogue of personal sin. Christ often spoke about the need to repent, to recognise our faults and to make determined efforts to change our way of life. Sadly, all too often, we feel there is no need for life changing action. For this is an age of selfishness, in which we dwell on our rights and personal freedom, sometimes to the detriment of others. It is therefore hard for us to repent if we do not believe we are corrupted. Sadly, the sins of the world lie grimly around us, the evidence never being further away than our own actions and neglect. What greater sorrow can there be than to realise that it was our sins that resulted in the death of Christ? Yet, what more serene happiness is there than receiving the forgiveness which the same Christ offers to those who repent? We may not feel we have to repent for our faults, but in fact we do. The importance of Holy Week then becomes clear; a time of reflection on our need for forgiveness and the knowledge that the God of all mercy will forgive us. Revd. TupsleyVoice Coffee Shop Stalwart Retires You are all asked to raise your cup to Geoff Loosemore who is to retire in March from his role as the Lead Organiser for the Tupsley Community Coffee Shop. Wednesday mornings will not be the same without Geoff’s guiding hand and steady nerves. The weekly Tupsley Community Coffee Shop is based at the Hampton Park URC and hosts an average of 85 people from the area for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chat. Geoff, together with his wife Jean, Charles and Margaret Renton and Mrs Joyce Busby initiated the idea way back in 2002. Geoff has been the ‘lead’ person ever since, gently encouraging that week’s catering ‘team’; ensuring that all goes smoothly.

Spring into action with CTCG...... with our first clean up of the year! We regularly do this in the Tupsley Quarry , but this time we’re heading to Gorsty Lane playing field (behind the chemist shop) on Sun 4th March . If you would like to help then please meet at the football pitch at 12 noon, we’ll provide “grabbers” and rubbish bags but it’s advisable to bring your own gardening gloves. Our annual Easter egg hunt will take place on Sun 1st April at the Scout hut Wellington Place, 2-4pm. For just £1 entry children can have lots of fun. There will be refreshments for sale. Please help us with donations of cake. Then sit/eyes down at 4pm for an hour of Easter bingo (any donation of prizes will be most welcome); fun for all the family! CTCG have a notice board near the Quarry play park. If you would like to place an advert of postcard or business card size for the cost of £10 per month, then please contact us via email or f b. Or perhaps advertise at our larger public events with a banner. Our Picnic in the Park would be an ideal event to advertise your business - this year it will take place on Sat 14th July 12.30-6pm. Finally at our last meeting it was agreed we would further help the community by paying for the cost of any replacement pads that may be needed for the new defibrillator at Old Eign Hill post office. Of course this money comes from funds generated through our events, which would not be possible without your support- so thank you.

It will seem a bit unfair to suggest that Geoff should put his feet up and have a brew on our behalf, no doubt Geoff will have to make it for himself!

Central Tupsley Community Group - CTCG

In the meantime, Geoff, our grateful thanks for all that you have done and our best wishes for the future; Wednesday will not be the same.

The second annual Plant Fair at St Michael’s Hospice will be a celebration of the joy of gardening.

School visit from a real explorer! Mark Wood, whose expeditions have included treks to the North Pole, South Pole and summit of Everest visited St Paul’s School. We were all amazed to hear of his encounters with wildlife - from polar bears, to lemmings, to the cast of Top Gear! Mark’s advice on how to deal with adversity and on how to reach your goals in life was truly inspirational. Mark, whose voyages have taken him from one end of the planet to the other, closed his presentation with a few words on the importance, above all else in life, of being a good, kind person and a friend to those in need.

A 150th Anniversary Brochure for St Paul’s primary school is in preparation. We would like to include an aerial photograph of the school so there is a good permanent record of the school buildings in 2018, its 150th Anniversary. If any reader has a drone with a camera and would be willing to take a photo for the Brochure, please contact me at tupsleyvoice@hotmail.co.uk . Memories of your time at St Paul’s school are very much needed for possible inclusion in the Brochure or Tupsley Voice, or just for inclusion with all the many other archives which will be sent to the Herefordshire Archive Centre at the end of 2018. Special events you remember are interesting but possibly even more interesting are details of everyday life at the school. For example your memories of the different teachers and headteachers, playground games, what desks and writing materials you had. Toilets, school meals and playground facilities. Details of lessons (possibly gardening, woodwork and cookery which senior pupils had at one time). The age you left Tupsley School to go to High School or work. Getting to school in bad weather and maybe the low temperatures inside the school in winter. Reasons for and methods of punishments. School during World War 2. Old photos (for me to copy) would be especially welcomed. Please send your memories to me at tupsleyvoice@hotmail. co.uk . Keith Pratley – Brochure editor

TupsleyVoice Angus Turner 1925 - 2018

CONCERT

Angus Turner, a man who did a tremendous amount of voluntary work for Tupsley Church and St Michaels Hospice, died on 13th January, aged 92. On the 1st February a celebration service was held in St.Paul’s church where there was standing room only. A great tribute to the long and faith filled life of a loving family man, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to very many people Angus was born in Northumberland in 1925. He learned to sail at school in Sunderland and became involved in the Scouting organisation. He later studied Agriculture at Leeds University and served in the Royal Navy in the Far East. His passion for sailing continued throughout his life. He and his wife Barbara had three children and in September 1970 moved to Hereford. Angus worked for British Denkavit and travelled huge distances advising farmers on specialist animal feed. In the 1970’s Angus and Barbara were foster parents to a number of children. Angus’s Christian faith was worked out in many practical ways. As well as fostering, he was Church warden at St.Paul’s in the 1970s. He organised several church camps at Kington and New Year’s Day walks became a tradition. Both Angus and Barbara were regular volunteers at St Michaels Hospice, working as Homemakers (described below), for more than 25 years. They loved walking with their dogs. He acted in church dramas, recited monologues, sang in the church singers, and in later years was part of the Prayer Ministry team in St.Paul’s. Another special place for Angus and Barbara was the island of Iona which they visited many times. Angus retired from British Denkavit in 1990 but worked part time for another 5 years for the British Agricultural Training Board. Barbara died in 2011 and Angus visited Iona to scatter Barbara’s ashes, as she had requested, in a place they had loved to visit together. Angus was blessed with six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, which brought great joy to him in these last years. We have said goodbye in this world only, to a fine man, a good neighbour, a real gentleman, always interested in others and always interesting to be with, a man of whom it has been said ‘in him was no shred of malice’, strong, gentle and kind, and a true friend to many…….. Why don’t you become a Hospice Homemaker like Angus and Barbara? Making patients and their loved ones feel comfortable and at ease is a vital part of life at St Michael’s Hospice. On the Inpatient wing, a group of volunteers called Homemakers help ensure this is achieved each and every day. The volunteers work short shifts, helping staff serve meals, taking the tea trolley around, and talking to patients and their loved ones if they would like a chat. If you’re interested in becoming a Homemaker, St Michael’s would love to hear from you. Please call 01432 851 000 for more information. 6

Air Cadets blown away by helicopter visit Recently, 124 (Hereford City) Squadron, Air Training Corps (ATC) were visited by a Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham. The Chinook was passing by and landed at Harold Street. Cadets and staff from Tupsley were lucky enough to be among the personnel invited to come and look round the magnificent aircraft. The cadets were given a tour of the cockpit by the aircrew and got the opportunity to ask the pilots lots of questions. The aircraft was down for about an hour and this gave the cadets time for photos. After an unforgettable experience, the Chinook took off again, blowing the door off the squadron on its way. 124 (Hereford City) Squadron are currently recruiting. In the ATC we f ly, glide, shoot and much more; offering many externally recognised qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and a BTEC in Aviation Studies. As well as all this, the ATC gives you life saving skills, helping you stand out from the crowd, whether you are looking at going into the military or not. With the RAF’s 100 Birthday coming up this year, 2018 promises to be an exciting year. We are looking for cadets from Year 8 to age 17, and adult volunteers over the age of 20. If you are interested in joining the squadron or would like a tour, please email 124@aircadets.org.

TupsleyVoice Bridging the gap

New Restrictions for use of Lugg Meadows Herefordshire Wildlife Trust have issued the following notice:Lugg Meadow is one of Hereford’s treasures: a rare surviving floodplain meadow of historic and botanical significance and a much-loved and visited green space on the edge of the city. The site has a somewhat more complex background than many green spaces and nature reserves. As well as a number of local residents holding historic grazing rights ownership of the meadow is held by a number of different organisations and individuals. The meadow’s status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest also means that it must be managed and protected such that this special habitat is preserved and enhanced. Ensuring that the meadow and its wildlife is carefully cared for while welcoming visitors has always been a balancing act. An increase in visits over recent years we believe has directly impacted on the population of curlews. Once a key species at this site, they no longer breed on Upper Lugg. However, seeing many people out enjoying nature, with all the benefits this brings, is inspiring and it is great to see people appreciating this wonderful nature reserve. In consultation with all those holding rights to the area, in order to ensure improved access for regular dog walkers and visitors to the area, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust have taken a decision to remove livestock from Bank Meadow and Wood Meadow for the foreseeable future, and instead mow the fields to maintain short grassland. (Bank Meadow and Wood Meadow are the fields immediately below our Baynton Wood nature reserve, with multiple access points from Tupsley North recreational ground and Rickyard Pasture, adjacent to Lower House Farm.) These meadows are popular with dog walkers, and we hope that the new management approach will improve the experience for people who own dogs. This area will now be able to welcome dogs off leads in this area throughout the year. On Upper Lugg Meadow, the most botanically-rich area of the floodplain grassland where the famous snake’s head fritillaries can be seen in spring, we will be asking for dogs to be kept on leads throughout the year and for people to pick up after their dogs. Faeces in the hay is dangerous to livestock, causing death in some cases, as well as vastly reducing its desirability and thus our ability to carry out the essential management. We hope this will lead to the return of breeding curlews and the flourishing of other species too and will be monitoring the wildlife populations to see if this makes a positive difference.

Back in November, the small wooden bridge which crosses the Lugg Rhea between Bank Meadow and Upper Lugg Meadow which the Trust installed in 1997, partially collapsed with one support broken and had to be closed and subsequently removed. We are planning on replacing this with a bridge further to the south-east, closer to the A438 Ledbury Road and we hope that this will be in place by mid-April 2018. We plan for this to bridge to be suitable for all-terrain mobility scooters to allow people with limited mobility better access to the site.

Grassland management update The meadow is managed by both grazing and mowing for hay with the soils periodically fertilized by silt from the River Lugg’s flood waters. Over the last year, however, the balance of the grasses and herbage has become a little out of kilter. We will therefore be spot-spraying some weeds – primarily docks – this spring to ensure a good quality hay crop this summer. This will mean some areas will be temporarily fenced off for safety but this will be for as short a time as possible.

Fritillary Celebration This year – flood waters allowing – we will be celebrating the beautiful snake’s head fritillaries with a morning of guided walks on 21st April. As well as seeing these lovely wildflowers, the walk leaders will discuss the history and ecology of the whole nature reserve – a fascinating insight to this wonderful place. Places must be booked in advance through our website: www.herefordshirewt.co.uk or call us on 01432 356762 and cost £7; under 14s are free.

Sporting Successes for Hampton Dene Primary Hampton Dene Primary school has continued to enjoy sporting success in a variety of different sports during the winter and spring term. The Netball team won the Aylestone High school open invitational tournament and won a winter games qualifier for the Herefordshire winter school games event. The Tag rugby team have enjoyed similar success and were joint winners of the Aylestone High School open invitational tournament. Hopefully all the students had good luck when they were involved with the winter games which took place on the 14th February while Tupsley Voice was being edited.

TupsleyVoice Ex St Pauls School Teacher Dies Madge Williams, a teacher at St Paul’s Primary School from 1968 until 1981 passed away in January just before her 96th birthday. Madge was a Tupsley resident, frail in her last few years following a serious fall down her stairs in 2012, but still living with care until the end of her life in her very old cottage, Madge Williams Litley Orchard, at the bottom of Gorsty Lane. She was born in Newent, Gloucestershire in February 1922 and went to Newent Grammar School, then to Lady Hawkins Grammar School, Kington, when her parents moved to Kington. She was a keen sportswoman, especially hockey and tennis. As a young woman she won the Ladies County Championship at Whitecross Tennis Club. Her love of gardening at her cottage kept her fit well into retirement. At the age of 79 she was still fit enough to climb her loved May Hill with amazing ease for a picnic to recall her childhood walks from Newent. She initially worked as an accounts clerk at Painter Brothers where she met her husband Bill. In 1942 she joined the Wrens, serving at Chatham Dockyard and Cardiff. Once her children, Steve and Sue, were old enough, she became secretary to the Principal at the Hereford College of Art, then at Castle Green. Later in 1965 she decided to train as a teacher at Hereford Teacher Training College, specialising in Maths and English. On qualifying she couldn’t believe her luck when she got a teaching post on her doorstep at St Paul’s Primary School. A dream job for her from 1968 until 1981, when she retired. The very many Tupsley children she taught during those 13 years, and their parents, will no doubt remember her well. In 1984 Madge joined the House Committee of Hampton House Retirement Home in Hampton Bishop and later the Management Committee, serving the Home for a total of 28 years. Hereford Cathedral and its music were always of interest to Madge and she was a key member of the Three Choirs Booking Office Team in the “Hereford” years. A service of celebration and thanksgiving for her life was held at Hereford Cathedral on 2 February.

Hampton Bishop Church FeteSaturday June 16th Last year’s record attendance at Hampton Bishop Church Fete saw Tupsley and Hampton Bishop Vicar, Nick Armstrong, arrive in style. Driving a beautiful open top E Type Jaguar in genuine racing helmet and fireproof overalls, he played BBC Top Gear’s ‘The Stig’. Nick later spent time in the stocks being pelted with wet sponges. Great fun! This year’s Church Fete is on Saturday June 16th. The bouncy castle has been booked, new and exciting events, displays and attractions are planned, and even more visitors forecast. Expect all the usual favourite stalls, £100 Cash Prize Draw, Teas, Ice Creams and BBQ, and the usual wonderful warm community spirit. Money raised goes towards the huge cost of maintaining the village’s beautiful and ancient Church.

Donation provides New Strength and Conditioning Equipment for Bishop’s School A £3,000 donation from parents and friends has provided students and staff with new, state of the art strength and conditioning equipment. Both boys and girls now benefit from top of the range weight training bars and locks, 5kg weight plates, 2.5kg training plates, dumbbells, medicine balls, weight resistance bands and ab mats. The weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions are led by Charlie Stone (Olympic weight lifting instructor) allowing students to build muscle tone and muscular endurance, as well as improve posture and flexibility. Muscular strength development is vital for all athletic activities. Mike Stubbs, Head of PE, said: “This generous donation has allowed the school to purchase equipment that would have ordinarily been out of our reach and now sets us apart from other local schools. Use of these types of weights, as part of an expert led session, is an integral and important part of any sport from rugby to fencing. I am absolutely delighted that students at Bishop’s now have access to this new equipment – thank you to all those that were a part of the fundraising!”

Students trying out the new equipment Ian Strangward, Chair, Bishops PSFA, said: “It has been a huge effort by our PSFA (Parents & Friends) Group, over several terms and fundraising events – but absolutely worth it! Thank you so much to all those that have been involved and supported us so generously with your time and donations.”

Bishop attends Anniversary Service On 17 January, we held a very special service in St Paul’s Church to mark the start of our 150th year of St Pauls (Tupsley) School. We sang some hymns that the children of 1868 would have recognised and years 5 & 6 helped take us back in time. We compared the lives of children today with those of 150 years ago. The hand bell team performed and the choir sang beautifully. The service was made extra special because the Bishop of Hereford attended. Bishop Richard spoke to the children about the things that have not changed in 150 years. He explained to the children that they are all wonderful, with amazing potential. Each one of us is a wonderful creation, loved by God and that this is something that we share with all of the countless children who have been a part of our school over the years. This event was the first of many special events, which will be held in 2018 to mark our anniversary so watch this space! TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2018 | 9

How to Keep in Touch with St Michael’s Hospice St Michael’s Hospice provides all its care free of charge because of the incredible support it receives from the local community. So keeping supporters updated about Hospice news and developments is vital. Recent changes in the law mean that St Michael’s and all charities must have written permission from the people before they are allowed to get in touch. St Michael’s is asking their supporters the important question of how they would like to be updated with news and developments. If you would like to keep in touch and be kept informed about Hospice news, please visit their website www.st-michaelshospice.org.uk or phone on 01432 851 000 to let them know how you would like to be contacted (post, email. SMS or phone). CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY TUITION. GCSE, AS and A level. First lesson free. Contact Dorothy on 07742 284 286.

TupsleyVoice Oxbridge records continue at Hereford Sixth Form College A record number of Hereford Sixth Form College students, 21 in all, have just received offers of places to study at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This means that 38% of the College’s 57 Oxbridge applicants received offers, in line with the College’s ten year average but well in excess of the national offer rate of less than 20%. Commenting on this success, Principal Peter Cooper said: “I am absolutely delighted that our success has been continued and extended. This is a tribute first and foremost to our students for their ambition in applying to the most competitive universities, for their tenacity in negotiating the application process and successfully demonstrating their academic potential. Our students are encouraged to be aspirational both by our staff and by the universities themselves; and of course parents and guardians also play a key role. Our link colleges at Oxford and Cambridge run outreach programmes including subject specific study days and summer schools; and Hereford Sixth Form College is the regional hub for Cambridge’s “HE+” programme of extension lessons in Hereford and master classes with Cambridge academics. As well as academic preparation, our staff provide additional practical guidance to students in their choice of course, making their applications and preparation for entrance tests and interviews. The subjects for which our students have been offered places range from Music to Biochemistry and Medicine to Law. Of particular note this year are the six students receiving offers to read Mathematics. Of our early applicants who did not receive Oxbridge offers, all have however already been offered places at other leading universities including Imperial, Warwick, Bristol and Birmingham”. Georgie Archer will be reading Languages at Trinity College, Cambridge and said, “I’m proud of what I have achieved and I look forward to pursuing my passion for languages at one of the best universities possible. The support from Hereford Sixth Form College, as well as the capacity to personalise and expand my studies has been exceptional. I’m grateful for all of the support received throughout the process – I wouldn’t have had the confidence to even apply without it.” Editor – 11 of the 21 students previously attended secondary schools outside Herefordshire, reflecting the popularity and success of the college for 6th Form education. Three of the 21 ( Josh Lee, Will Roberts and Jasmine Stanley) went to St Mary’s School and one (Tom Morris) went to Bishop’s School. Deia Russell-Smith, is the one Tupsley resident, and having previously attended Steiner Academy, has been offered a place at the University of Oxford to study English/History. Well done to all of them.
