70 Years of Tupsley School This photograph taken at Tupsley School (now St Paul’s Primary School) was taken over 70 years ago, almost certainly in May/June 1947. It is a class of approximately 7 year old children. It is hoped that some of our readers will recognise themselves, a relative or a friend and perhaps let us know what they did when they left school and where they are now. Can anyone confirm the name of any of the children with a “?” next to their name, or any of those with unknown names. The school log records that their teacher, Mrs F James, was a supply teacher who appears to have only worked at the school in May/June 1947 except for a very few days in the winter of that year, which enables us to almost certainly accurately date the photo.

The headmaster at the time was Mr Croome (1927 – 1959) who brought great energy and a very high standard of education to the school for over 30 years. Croome Close, Hampton Dene Road, is named in his honour. The drab clothes worn by Mrs James and the children are indicative of the period just after the Second World War when clothes were poor quality and only available to be purchased with a very limited number of clothing coupons. The boys from Ivy House Orphan Home (Marked 1) were sadly even more drab due to them not having ties, so they all wore polo necked jumpers. Ivy House was alongside Ledbury Road just a few yards towards Hereford from Tupsley Cross, where Ivy Close was built when the Home was demolished in the late 1980’s.

Note: (1) Lived at the Orphan Home at Ivy House, Ledbury Road. (2) Peter Rowberry (Back Row) - A well known Hereford butcher (3) Philip Morris (2nd Row) - Brother of Sheila Morris; one time Deputy Head at Bishop’s School

Holiday at Home: Fellowship, Fun and Food The beginning of August saw the 14th Holiday at Home, held at Hampton Park Church with input by many from St. Paul’s Church and the community, when 30 ‘older citizens’ from our community enjoyed each other’s company, lots of fun and laughter, good food and entertainment. On offer during the three days were craft activities which included making lavender bags; modelling with clay and balloons; chairobics to ‘Abba’ music; a bingo session (courtesy of Councillor Jim Kenyon); quizzes; puzzles and jigsaws; and for a grand finale – a concert by the Kindle Singers. All this interspersed by lots of tea, coffee, cakes and two roast dinners – thank you Pam and helpers, again. Wednesday saw a visit to St. Mary’s Priory and tapestry exhibition in Abergavenny, and a beautiful lunch at the Llanwenarth Hotel, in a delightful setting overlooking the River Usk. This holiday was sponsored by the Tupsley Coffee Shop. Why not pop in to the very popular Coffee Shop for tea, coffee, biscuits and a natter, and see what goes on if you haven’t been before. Open every Wednesday 10 – 12 at Hampton Park URC Church. Choose your flooring in the Transport is available if comfort of your own home needed. You will be sure of a Carpet | Vinyl good welcome. St Paul’s Summer Club Was Great Fun We have started an exciting new term at St Paul’s Childcare. We are happy to see everyone back at Breakfast Club, After School Club and Nursery and we welcome many new children and their families who have decided to join us this year. With the most recent Pineapple leavers having just started their first few days at ‘big school’ we hope that everything is going well.

Summer Club 2018 What an amazing time we had this summer. Thank you to all the staff who dedicated their summer to entertaining the children. The children have made spaceships, rockets, boats, picture frames, painted rocks (look out for them around Herefordshire), space slime, puppets, masks and painted shopping bags. In the kitchen they produced an assortment of culinary delights including toadstool pizzas, gingerbread mice, iced biscuits, rocky road and milkshakes. We were delighted to have an illustration workshop with local children’s author Iain Welch, who created bespoke artwork for the children and finished off with a book signing so that the children could go home with his latest picture book about ‘Steve the Mouse’. Children have been leaving Summer Club happy and exhausted, which is always a great sign. We will hopefully see you all again next year! Events to look out for this term include our sponsored ‘Walk and Talk’ this half term, Christmas Nativity service and return of the Quiz Night - dates of which will be released very soon.

Much loved Tabby Cat – Missing since April Please help. My sole companion, Georgie, a 5 year old golden Tabby cat, was driven out of the house in Pilley Road by a local Tom cat on 19th April (over 4 months ago). I have tried everything to find him, even calling Hereford & Worcester radio. He might have been hiding and surviving by catching mice and birds, but it is also possible that someone thought he was a stray cat and kindly took him in, not realising that I have been trying to find him all this time. If you know where he is, please phone “Vets for Pets”, Tel: 01432 366 930 or contact Tupsley Voice. 4

Hereford Amateur Radio Club

Tupsley is one of the 53 Herefordshire Council wards. The ward was re-defined in 2015 following a review of ward boundaries by the Local Government Boundary Commission. As a result of the changes, the Tupsley area is now divided into 3 wards: TUPSLEY, EIGN HILL, & AYLESTONE HILL. Each of these wards has a Herefordshire County Councillor and a Hereford City Councillor representing them.

Hereford has a thriving Amateur Radio Club. Known as HARS (Hereford Amateur Radio Society), we have an accomplished training team able to teach anyone how to prepare and obtain, a radio license. Communication by radio is a wonderful hobby and takes many forms, newcomers will quickly understand what they are doing when they put a powerful transmitter onto the airwaves.

A map of the ward has been included to show where the ward boundaries are. TUPSLEY Ward has the following two Councillors: Old Eign Hill Ward

The Society meets on the first Friday of each month at 7.30pm in Newton midway between Hereford and Leominster. If you are interested, contact Mike (G3LZM), on 01432 272987. Tupsley Ward

St Michael’s Hospice How you can help The incredible support St Michael’s receives from the community means your local hospice is now providing more care to more people for longer periods of time.

105th Birthday Girl Possibly Tupsley’s most senior resident, Dorothy Studerus celebrated her 105th Birthday on August 28th at Hampton House, Hampton Bishop, to which she has recently moved Dorothy was part of St Paul’s Church congregation for some years when she was first living at Elizabeth Court, Bodenham Road. She and four or five other residents frequently went as a group to church services. When it became difficult, church members Pat Rawson and Betty Grist would take Holy Communion to them in Elizabeth Court lounge, but sadly the group became smaller and smaller as members grew older and died. Dorothy then encouraged the group to join her to attend the monthly lunches at Hampton Bishop Village Hall. Only in recent months has it been necessary for Dorothy to leave her apartment at Elizabeth Court, following a fall, to become a resident at Hampton House, Hampton Bishop. From there it is only a short wheelchair journey to join the monthly lunch group in the village hall and she now regularly receives Communion in the lounge at Hampton House.

St Michael’s mission is to ensure that end-of-life care is available to everyone who needs it, including patients, family and friends. We want to enable people to do the things they want to do and make their life easier and more comfortable. All care at St Michael’s is provided free of charge, and people can be referred by any health or social care professional involved in their care. We care for cancer and non-cancer patients, and because everyone’s illness is unique, we offer a range of different treatments. Our regular outpatient clinics and support groups can give people the confidence and advice to help them live well with their illness. For example, people with fatigue and breathlessness can benefit from courses offering practical advice. Our occupational and physiotherapists can help alleviate or control a range of symptoms, and with personalised exercise programmes and home adaptations, they can make a real improvement to independent living. Our person-centred approach means we also provide psychological and emotional support through our counselling service and social care team. Visiting the Hospice offers people a chance to socialise, make new friends and take part in activities that range from arts and craft sessions to informative talks. If you would like to find out more about how we can help you, or if you want to join a nursing team which cares, visit st-michaels-hospice.org.uk or call 01432 851 000.

TupsleyVoice A New Academic Year! Students, pupils, heads, teachers, staff members, parents and governors - If you are connected to one of our many schools or colleges in Tupsley, September brings new starts and opportunities and maybe one or two things that make you nervous. It’s worth thinking about the fact that whatever your age; your feelings and questions may be the same. Will ‘they’ be friendly? (in the playground at drop off, in the staff room, in a new class) Will I look right and be comfortable in what I’m wearing? What happens at lunchtime?

“Perfect” entries at Fuchsia Annual Show The intense heat of the last couple of months, that most of us have enjoyed, has played havoc with our precious fuchsias. They will not grow if it’s too cold and stop growing if it’s too hot! However, members of the Hereford & District Fuchsia Association pulled all the stops out at their Annual Show held recently at Hampton Park Reformed Church, to give a glorious display of colour. Surprisingly there were more entries than anticipated! One of the newer members Mrs Christine Morris - who joined the association just a year ago - not only won the Novice and Intermediate Cups, but also won the Best in Show Trophy with a beautiful fuchsia called “Annabel” Overall highest number of points in show for the ladies was awarded to Mrs Georgina Morris and for the gentlemen, Mr. Peter Spitzmaul. The British Fuchsia Society judge Mr. Arthur Phillips was very impressed with all the entries and found that one class “A Fuchsia Head Floating in a Wine Glass” very difficult to award the 1st, 2nd and third prize cards, as the entries were all so perfect!

Will things be as I expected? At St Paul’s church we are passionate about supporting all those in our parish who are involved in education - at whatever stage and age. We pray regularly for this aspect of our community life. If you want to share a specific prayer need with us you can contact Nick or myself or leave a note on our prayer board (at the back of the church by the candles). You may want to pray this: Lord God - help me to see you in those I meet today. Thanks that you are with me. Amen. St Paul’s is open daily for quiet reflection, services and to gather in worship. We also serve free tea and coffee after school drop off on Tuesdays and Fridays until 10am, for those parents and carers who may be able to stop for a quick catch up. Revd. Rachel Robertson, Assistant Curate, and Revd. Nick Armstrong, Vicar - St Paul’s Church, Tupsley, with St Andrew’s Church, Hampton Bishop. rachel.robertson@stpaulshereford.org.uk vicar@stpaulshereford.org.uk

Successes for St Paul’s cricket teams This year has been very successful for cricket at St Paul’s with all three teams reaching the County Kwik Cricket Finals. The year 4 Kwik Cricket team won all of their matches and became Herefordshire County Champions. The Girls and Mixed Year 5 & 6 teams also battled admirably on two very hot days against the best teams in the county for their age groups; both teams finishing in a respectable 3rd place. Congratulations to all the teams, for not only their game play success but being excellent ambassadors for St Paul’s School at all the events.

Foot Massages at the RNC “Family Fun Day” in June were very popular. Almost as good as the ice cream!

“Family Fun Day” a great success Many thanks to everyone who came along to support RNC’s (Hereford Blind College) Family Fun day in June. We were delighted to see so many visitors having a go at Visually Impaired sports, finding out about Braille, relaxing with a massage or enjoying the delicious food and drink on offer – particularly the ice cream! We had such a great time we are keen to organise another Family Fun day next summer, so please look out for the date in Tupsley Voice. TUPSLEY VOICE AUTUMN 2018 | 7

TupsleyVoice High performing sprinters at Bishop’s At the Hereford & Worcester Schools Athletics Games Mandras Kyeremeh of Bishops school qualified for the junior boys 100m final, equalling his personal best of 11.8sec. In running the final in 11.4sec, a new personal best, he won

Hereford Sixth Form College Sets the Benchmark Again With new linear qualifications and revised subject specifications, this year’s A Level results were always going to look different, but Hereford Sixth Form College has exceeded the national benchmarks laying down a marker for the future. A* to B grades and overall pass rates are above the national averages with an increasing number of students gaining A* grades. The overall pass rate was 99.2% compared with the national average of 97.6%, which is a huge success story. Bishop’s Girl Relay team represented Hereford at the Hereford & Worcester Schools Championships and won gold! gold and secured a qualifying time for the English Schools Championships. The following week Mandras represented Herefordshire & Worcestershire at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham in the Mason Trophy. He again won gold, gaining valuable experience of the track where he would run in the English Schools. His second gold medal of the day came when the H & W junior boys won the 4x100m relay; At the English Schools Championships, Mandras was unfortunately nursing a toe injury and couldn’t match his new personal best of 11.4 sec, but still came 3rd in his heat qualifying for the final in a time of 11.70sec. In the final he was placed 8th in a time of 11.69, the race winner clocking 11.22. At the Hereford & District Schools Games Tom Evans won both the junior boys 800m & 300m, with impressive times of 2:11.0 and 39.2sec respectively. This qualified him for the Hereford & Worcester Schools event at both distances. On that day he qualified for both finals, but wisely focussed on the 800m, gaining a bronze medal at that distance.

Mandras Kyeremeh of Bishops School was an English Schools Athletics Championships 100 metres finalist.

At the H & W Schools event the Hereford girls relay was an all Bishops team, consisting of Olivia Hagan (year 8), Sydney Green (year 9), Anna Powell (year 9) and Darcie Jones (year 9). They secured gold!

A remarkable 84 students achieved all A* or A grades with a further 103 achieving 3 grade A’s or more. These top performers compare with the leading independent and state schools and colleges in the country. Peter Cooper, College Principal, was delighted with the excellent performance saying, “These results reflect incredibly well upon our hard working students and dedicated staff. They are all to be congratulated. The new qualifications offer a higher challenge and it is one to which all involved have risen. I am extremely proud of all our students and delighted that they have strong foundations on which to build. Many will be going to university, with a high proportion to Russell Group Universities where they achieve well above national averages due to their firm foundations with us. Our new vocational programmes have also been a real success with many leaving us to take up apprenticeships and employment. 124 students gained straight distinctions in their vocational courses. Well done to you all!” Five A levels with grades A or A* were gained by former St. Mary’s RC High School pupils Przemyslaw Bujak and William Roberts. Four A levels with grades A or A* were gained by former Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School pupils Hannah Drury, Henry Genner, Jacob Stinton, Thomas Morris; and by former St. Mary’s RC High School pupils Anna Williams, Jasmine Stanley, Joshua Lee, Lana Moroney. Tom Morris, previously at Bishop’s School, achieved an A* in each of Further Mathematics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. Naturally he was delighted with his results and said, “I chose the Hereford 6th Form College because of its excellent reputation for providing high quality education. Lessons were very well structured with good teaching and good resources”. Tom is now off to the University of Oxford to read Mathematics. TUPSLEY VOICE AUTUMN 2018 | 9

There are three options, all of which will cost something in time and/or money. • We can load it into the car and take it to the tip • We can load it into those rather flimsy, green, plastic sacks which the council is happy to sell us. But did you know that the contents of these green sacks are not recycled, but put in landfill, along with the general waste? • For not much more than the cost of five green garden sacks each month, we can have a brown garden waste bin, which holds a huge amount of garden waste and is emptied from outside the house twice monthly. This will then be composted and turned into soiled conditioner. Contact: www.greenwasteclub.co.uk for full details.

TupsleyVoice Wildlife Trust Plans for Lugg Meadows In July Herefordshire Wildlife Trust said a fond farewell to Lower House Farm and moved to Queenswood Country Park. Lower House Farm is to be restored to a private residence. Herefordshire Wildlife Trust will continue to own and manage areas of Lugg Meadow. Improvements to signage and the diversity of the meadows are planned to take place over the next few years. We are planning to carry out weed control, to help remove the dock and also have plans to create a project to find out more about the curlew which breed on the meadow; monitoring nests and chick survival. The Trust is now looking to find a regular warden for the site and would like to increase the number of volunteers involved with supporting staff to look after the meadow. This historic Lammas meadow is a fascinating site to be involved with. If you would like to help us manage it for wildlife and for people, please contact Pete Johnson at: p.johnson@herefordshirewt.co.uk

Bishop’s Leavers Sparkle & suave! St Paul’s - Proud winners of the Herefordshire Primary School’s Jamboree Chess Tournament

St Paul’s win Chess Jamboree On Thursday July 5th, St Paul’s hosted the Herefordshire Primary Schools Jamboree Chess Tournament. Teams of 7 children from St Paul’s, Whitchurch, St Laurence, Cathedral, Holmer and Garway Schools took part in a 3 round competition. Over the course of the afternoon 21 chess games were played by each school. For some of the children from St Paul’s this was their first experience of playing in a team tournament. Every participant represented their school well and with excellent manners, and enjoyed the experience of playing different players. Each round was very close. 4 schools, including St Paul’s, were only separated by 1 or 2 points in round 1 and round 2. Who would win? The last game to finish in the 3rd round was our board 7. When our player won her game it meant St Paul’s had narrowly won and retained the trophy by just 1 point, scoring 15 points in the day. Congratulations to the Team. Also a big thankyou to the parents who helped serve refreshments on a hot afternoon – it was much appreciated by everybody.

Year 11 students from the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School sparkled in the evening sun on a night to celebrate the end of their school years, on Friday 6th July. Red carpet arrivals did not disappoint the huge gathered crowd of proud parents, carers, teachers, staff, friends and family. Bow ties, suave suits and glittering sequins arrived in a mix of lorries, Bentleys and….a wheelbarrow!? The Class of 2018 enjoyed a delicious three-course meal in the main hall - transformed over two days by parents and friends of Bishop’s school into a luxurious party venue. An awards ceremony with a difference was then followed by music and dancing to eventually bring the evening to a close. “What a fantastic evening of celebration for our Year 11 students,” said Lisa Strevens, Chair, Bishops PSFA. “We would like to thank all the parent volunteers, staff and friends for making the Prom such a success. Also I would like to pass on a huge ‘thank you’ to local residents once again for their patience during arrivals. We wish every student all the very best for the future!” Photographs by Joanna Freeman and Rebecca Preece TUPSLEY VOICE AUTUMN 2018 | 11
