TUPSLEY
& Hampton Park Churches for the Tupsley Community
With her Mayoral theme of ‘Inspiring Young Lives’, Cllr. Hey has chosen as the Mayoral Charities for the year the CLD Trust (counselling and support services for young people) and the Phoenix Bereavement Support Service (who work with children and young people when someone close to them dies).
In 2001 she returned to her roots, bought a small house in Tupsley and taught at St.Paul’s Primary School. In 2010 with two other mums, she became one of the founder members of Wellies Action Group. The Group were able to secure over £100,000 in external funding to refurbish the play area at Quarry Park in Wellington Place. In 2013, she joined the newly formed Central Tupsley Community Group (CTCG) working with County Councillor Jim Kenyon as part of the team organising community events in Quarry Park. She then became a City Councillor in 2015 and since then, has continued to support her community in Tupsley Ward. Kath was re-elected in May and now proudly takes on the prestigious role of Mayor of Hereford.

Carol Rushton presenting to Bishop’s school Head Boy and Head Girl, Sam Fitzer and Neave Turner, a wooden cross made by a local craftsman as a farewell gift to the school.
A fond farewell to a Popular Teacher
Mr Henton, Headteacher, commented “All the work Carol does within the school is underpinned by her strong Christian faith. We will miss her when she leaves us and are sure that she will continue to use her many talents to the full.”
Nick Armstrong added: ‘It’s often a huge help to a family navigating a painful and tricky process when a close relative dies, to have some clear wishes easily accessible for the funeral.’
TupsleyVoice
This year’s Dying Matters campaign Are We Ready? encourages all of us to look at the practical and emotional steps we need to take to be ready for the end of our lives. Opinion polls show that only about a third of people have written a will or thought about their funeral, and even fewer have thought about their end of life care, or made a decision about organ donation.
Mrs Rushton said ‘I have spent many happy years at our school. The job has been perfect for me as I have not only been able to teach students French and German but also help with leadership, coaching, professional development and staff wellbeing. I will continue to work with schools and look forward to a host of new opportunities. God bless and thank you’
One way of noting your preferences for your own funeral would be to look at churchofenglandfunerals.orgForyourorgchurchofenglandfunerals.andthenpassacopyofwishestoyourfamily.moreinformationsee:www.

We are keen to let people know that everyone can have a church funeral, even if they were not members of a church congregation. Church of England clergy can conduct services in churches, and also crematoriums and green burial grounds. Funerals can be personalised in terms of music, readings, and participation.
Among many stands, one was run by local Church of England clergy including our vicar Revd Preb Nick Armstrong and curate Revd Rachel Robertson.

A public event to help people talk about death and grief was held at the Left Bank, Hereford on 13 May.
The staff and students of The Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat said a fond farewell to Mrs Carol Rushton at Easter. Mrs Rushton has taught at the school since 1983 (35 years!) and throughout her many years at the school has been an inspirational teacher and senior leader. Her enthusiasm for languages is infectious. She has led over 100 school trips and visits abroad and given students many opportunities to experience other cultures. For many years she has supported and encouraged the development of trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers together with their mentors, within Herefordshire and beyond; providing seminars, lectures and a multitude of on- line resources.
Gym and Group Exercise Classes
Revd Anne Dowdeswell (vicar of Hereford South Wye) who organised the stand said: ‘It is a privilege to be involved in this ministry. We know that lots of people have questions or concerns about funerals.
Are We Ready...?
A group of students designed and made a cross as a farewell gift, representing Love, Faith and Hope and wrote personalised messages wishing her well for the future. In return Carol commissioned a local craftsman to make a pretty wooden cross for the school which she presented to the school’s Head Boy and Head Girl, Sam Fitzer and Neave Turner
The ‘Picnic in the Park’ this year is on Saturday 13th July at Tupsley Quarry and we will be doing a consultation there, as well as enjoying this popular community event for all ages.
I want to listen to your concerns and ideas. Elizabeth Foxton and I will be starting a monthly surgery together, where people can just drop in, or you can contact me by email, phone, WhatsApp, twitter or Facebook. I’m currently working hard on delivering a closed circuit cycle track at the racecourse which will bring in over £500,000 worth of investment and I am keen to try and deliver an Eastern City Bridge from Rotherwas across to Ledbury Road which I believe would make moving around the City a lot easier and quicker.

As your Councillor, I want to hear your views as to how we can create a safe, secure, healthy and happy environment for Aylestone Hill Ward. In this regard, I will be holding an open day at the Whitehouse Community Hub on Saturday 10th August, so you can meet me, and I can listen to your views and move forward to address your concerns.
Herefordshire & Hereford City Council Election Results
During March and April I knocked on hundreds of doors in Eign Hill Ward, meeting as many local residents as possible, and have been so pleased to be able to speak to interested and friendly residents. It is good to have this opportunity to thank all those who voted for me. Your vote is hugely appreciated and I am delighted to become Councillor for all those living in the Ward.
Through canvassing, I discovered for myself an inspiring and enthusiastic community. I have frequently been described as a “people person” and very much look forward to getting to know you better. Now that I have been elected, I find that I am most fortunate to be working with Councillor Jim Kenyon, benefitting from his support and wealth of experience.

My role as your Councillor will be challenging and frustrating at times, however, I believe that good working relations with officers of the Council and outside bodies of the Council is paramount to help deliver changes that are required for the Aylestone Hill ward. I know, in my own role as Charity Manager for the ELY Memorial Fund, it is crucial to work and support local businesses and charities who offer endless voluntary hours to deliver much needed services for Herefordshire.
Eign Hill Ward: Jim Kenyon Tupsley Ward Kath Hey
My whole teaching career has been in Herefordshire and I feel privileged to have taught in both rural and city schools. I retired two years ago and have always held an interest in local politics. This was my opportunity to attend Council meetings as a member of the public to discover how it functioned. A year later, joining It’s Our County seemed the most obvious choice, as they are a group of hardworking people with a strong desire to maintain and support a great County.
Each of the County Councillors were invited by Tupsley Voice to write a few words about themselves and these articles are printed below.
Tupsley Ward: Jim Kenyon – Independent Received 80% of the votes (2 candidates)
I would like to thank everyone who made time to either vote by post or at the Polling Station on the 3rd May 2019. The percentage turnout was 40.58% in the ward, which is extremely good given what is happening in Parliament. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you highlighting concerns for the local area.
4 | TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2019
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people that went out and voted for me in the local elections. Those that didn’t vote for me can be assured I will be working just as hard for you.
Tupsley is a beautiful area to live in - we are very lucky.
I attend St Paul›s Church in Tupsley, frequent The Rose Garden and The Hub at The Whitehouse. I can confidently recommend the warm welcome, and friendship at The Hub, not forgetting, the tea and delicious cakes!
Tupsley Voice is delighted that Kath Hey (Tupsley Ward) has now been appointed at Mayor of Hereford and we include in this Issue of Tupsley Voice a photograph of her in her Mayoral Robes with her family, together with details about her and her Mayoral Year charities.
The Whitehouse Community Hub has always been a passion of mine to provide a community building for everyone to have access for recreation, friendships and support in services that may be difficult to access. My first involvement was through the North Tupsley Action Group who worked tirelessly to keep the building in the area. This was achieved! It is wonderful to see that through the determination of the Board of Management and the goodwill and endless voluntary hours of residents, the Hub is evolving. This has to continue to support our future generations.
Details will be displayed at the Community Hub shortly.

This year we are taking action, in partnership with the Herefordshire Ornithological Club, to conserve the curlew which return to the meadow each spring and ensure they continue to breed at this much-loved nature reserve. We believe that a pair of curlew are nesting on Hampton Meadow this year but can’t confirm any are attempting to breed on Lower Lugg Meadow as we’d hoped - but fingers crossed! We have had a lot of support for this project but would still like to ask people to take notice of any signs and temporary fencing and keep their dogs on leads where asked during this sensitive time.
Rose Garden Retirement Village Summer Fete & BBQ
As we edge into summer, look out for dragon and damsel flies along the river banks, in particular the lovely banded demoiselle. The meadows are turning golden with buttercups. Various different species grow on the meadow including the meadow buttercup and the bulbous buttercup!
If you would like to get involved with caring for Lugg Meadow Nature Reserve, please contact Pete Johnson, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, 01432 356872, p.johnson@herefordshirewt.co.uk

The amount of dock growing amongst the grasses and flowers has again increased and we are treating areas of the meadow to keep this species at bay. Dock can ‘out-compete’ some of the less vigorous wild grasses and flowers and reduces the diversity of species in the meadow. It also reduces the value of the hay that’s made in the summer.
Please come along for a fun afternoon!

Farm tours at Holme Lacey College are a popular event. Each year a wide range of organisations, student groups, research bodies and general public take part in tours of the Campus Estate and Farm. Around 600 visitors attended the event in 2018. This year’s free event, open to all, is on Sunday 9th July at Pound Farm adjacent to the Holme Lacy Campus. It is an organic mixed farm, set within 257 hectares of land and visitors will be able to tour the land on tractor trailer rides throughout the day. See Hereford cattle, the farms large flock of Lleyn sheep which will be sheared throughout the day, and farm machinery. Crops produced on the farm include potatoes, wheat, oats, pea and barley mix, beans and cider apples.
Being in Herefordshire, the farm has an abundant Great Crested Newt and Dung Beetle population and visitors can explore the natural fauna with pond dipping activities. The farm also supports a number of bee hives on the estate and these are managed by the Herefordshire Beekeepers Association who will also be at the event. There are a variety of children’s activities including; Animal Corner, Nest Building, Make a Sheep, Scavenger Hunt and Plant Olympics as well as food and drink available throughout the day. The event is free of charge and open to all, just following the signs to the farm from the village of Holme Lacy.
I spent most of the day in the NHS section. You could make snot, explore the structure of DNA and learn simple first aid in that section alone. There were also areas relating to computer technology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) use in the army, vehicles, engineering and exploring careers.
I loved my time at The Big Bang Fair and would hugely recommend it to other people who get the chance to go. It was great to discover careers you may not have heard of or thought about and find out more information about the STEM based jobs you already had in mind.
To mark this milestone, the Hospice is inviting you to remember your loved one with an exclusive Forget Me Not. The stunning flowers, measuring 17cm in diameter and 43 cm in length, have been custom made by the British Ironwork Centre.

I walked through the doors of the NEC in Birmingham and was overwhelmed. There were people everywhere, noise coming from all directions and so much to do in such a small amount of time. You could easily have spent a whole weekend there watching shows, learning new things and having fun, but we just had a few hours.
TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2019 | 7
Celebrating the life of your loved one with a Forget Me Not is a wonderful tribute to their memory, and the money raised from each flower purchased will enable our Care Teams to be there when it matters most for many local families living with terminal illness.
In the careers area, you could answer a few questions on a tablet and it gave you three jobs that would best suit you. You then got given A5 cards that gave you more information about the jobs suggested. The cards also gave you information about what you need to do to get there.
I spoke to Mrs Burley about why she decided to take Year 8 and the Year 9 and 10 Lumos pupils to the Big Bang Fair ”We chose to take the pupils on the trip because it was all based around science but also linked to careers. It was an introduction to careers that the pupils may want to pursue in the future.”

I enjoyed the NHS/biology section the best as I want a career in healthcare. It has shown me that it is possible to achieve my goals if I keep working hard. Although my favourite part of the Big Bang Fair was based around healthcare, the virtual reality section was also great as it has given me a different view on life.

It has been a great adventure and a real honour to lead this school. The strong partnership between home and school has been at the very heart of what we’ve achieved. The staff too are a phenomenal team, who work so hard each and every day. Most important of all are the wonderful children who are so full of promise and who bring so much joy and love with them into the school. It has been a great privilege to have responsibility for their primary education and I will miss them all very much.

“Two inspectors spent a full day in the school. They met with parents, staff, governors and lots of pupils. They observed Religious Education, looked at books and attended worship. The report has now been published and is available on the school website. It is well worth reading in full as it makes some very important judgments about our school.

St Pauls Primary an “Excellent” C of E School
In 2014, under the previous framework, we were judged as ‘outstanding’ in all areas. The ‘outstanding’ judgment has been removed from the new SIAMS framework, so no schools will be judged as ‘outstanding’. The new inspection framework is designed to reveal whether or not the school is a ‘good’ Church of England school. In very exceptional cases, a school can be judged as ‘excellent’. This will be much less common than even the previous outstanding judgments. I am therefore extremely pleased to share the news that St Paul’s did receive an overall judgment of ‘excellent’ as well as excellent judgements in each specific area (Collective worship & Religious Education). This was by no means a foregone conclusion and the whole school community should be incredibly proud of this unusual achievement.

Fast forward to October 1969 when a group of like-minded women joined forces and Tupsley Townswomen’s Guild (TTG) was formed and this year it celebrates its 50th birthday. Plans are in hand to celebrate this with special outings, challenges and a Celebratory Party in October.

Tupsley Townswomen’s Guild celebrates 50 Years
The event, organised by the School’s PSFA, is one of the highlights of the Summer Term, with a considerable turnout of onlookers expected to see the guests arrive….meaning some extra traffic in the area for a few hours.
Tupsley Townswomen’s Guild meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month, 2pm at The Whitehouse Hub, Whittern Way and the 3rd Tuesday of each month, 7.30pm at Hampton Park URC, Hampton Dene Road. We enjoy a variety of presentations by local charities plus talks on diverse subjects such as “Life on a Cruise Ship” and “5 Extraordinary Churches” to name but two. Activities include a Summer outing (this year to The Valley, Evesham), a Strawberry Tea, a Ramble…. and an annual quiz when we challenge the WI. We have a regular raffle, socials, and hold a Sales Table once a month.
On the evening of Friday 5th July, Tupsley residents around Hampton Dene Road may see some unusual vehicles on the roads….Yes, Prom season is almost upon us! Year 11 students from the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School (BHBS) will be returning on the evening of 5th in all their finery for a night of celebration before moving on to pastures new this autumn.

TUPSLEY VOICE SUMMER 2019 | 11
2019 is a significant year for the Townswomen’s Guild, nationally and locally. In 1929, one year after all women over the age of 21 were given the vote, the idea of urban Guilds was born, for women to meet and learn about citizenship and how to use the vote. The first Guild was opened in Hayward’s Heath. In 1932 the organisation became the National Union of Townswomen’s Guilds. It continued to grow, and this year celebrates its 90th Anniversary. I wonder if some dog owner could explain why, when doggie poo bags are readily available in shops and there are bins on the The Quarry, one morning I counted 12 piles of dog excrement on the pavement between Quarry Rd and the Post Office on Old Eign Hill. Apart from being a health hazard, it is not very pleasant to have shoes or buggie wheels covered in this muck. It seems to be a person or persons who walk their dog early in the morning or late at night when nobody is around to shame them into picking up after their dog. I hope they see this letter and act more responsibly.
Lisa Strevens, BHBS PSFA Chair, said “As always we will work hard to minimise the disruption to local residents, and would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding during those few hours in the early evening on 5th Parents,July.”friends,
