Countless thousands of children who attended St Pauls school throughout its 150 years of history (1968 – 2018) will remember the massive Oak Tree in the middle of their playground. Most them will have played or possibly even danced around it. Sadly early in 2019 it was identified that some parts of it were rotten. In this modern age, where if there is the slightest risk to Health and Safety the risk must be significantly reduced or eliminated, it was decided that the ancient Oak Tree must be removed. So 2nd June 2019 was a sad day for existing and past pupils (many quite elderly), when contractors arrived to cut down the tree in less than a morning’s work. The photographs show the work being carried out and the final stump with its rotten core.
Going, Going, Gone. Pictures of the day the tree came down.

Do you remember last year’s Advent Challenge, issued by St Paul’s Church to the wider community in Tupsley? The challenge was to donate an item of food (or similar) to the Food Bank boxes in church for a period of 10 days. In return, you could collect a Christmas blessing star to hang on your Christmas tree.

We were both delighted and amazed by the generosity of the response we got so we’ve decided to do something similar again in 2019. In order to allow time for the items to reach their destination in good time for Christmas, the Challenge will start on Monday 18th November and end on Friday 29th November. There will be celebrating/ blessing/ and acknowledging of the endeavour at the 10am service on Advent Sunday (1st December). Let’s aim, once again, to help those less fortunate and truly celebrate Christmas.
Many of the Community Groups that regularly meet at Hampton Park Church, Hampton Dene Road, are joining for an Open Day, starting at 10:30 on Saturday October 19th, to display their activities, in the hope that even more people will join them. There will be demonstrations from many of the groups and also displays with information about activities. There will be a wide variety of activities going on for the old and young including, from dancing to painting, Tai Chi to singing, the Townswomen Guild and the Fuchsia Society, all of which meet regularly at the church. A full list of the organisations that meet can be found on page 2 of every issue of Tupsley Voice. Why not come along and see what is going on locally and if there are any activities you and your family would like to take up; or just come to watch the demonstrations. Refreshments and a light lunch will be served during the day too. Look out for further details of the day and the programme during the weeks before.

As the school year draws to a close we completed the last of our charity fund raising events with a fun run on Saturday 13th July which had a wide range of participation from students, parents and staff. Even Rev Nick Armstrong(Governor and Vicar of St Pauls, Tupsley) got out his running shoes and completed the course in a very respectable time! This year we have raised over £7500 which will be donated to the two school charities chosen by students; the Little Princess Trust and Children with Cancer UK.

For a very long time the site of the old council offices at Brockington, Hafod Road has been a building site but the traffic congestion, noise and dust has coming to an end as the new building, Brockington House Care Home started to welcome its first residents in the middle of August. Also on the old council site has been built a small cul de sac of new private houses, Hafod Park, all of which are now occupied.

This past year has seen much change at Bishop’s with new appointments and plans as we look to the future. I would like to thank all of our school community for its support in the huge amount we have achieved in a relatively short period of time. Although we narrowly missed improving on our Ofsted grading, in the inspection report there were many positives and recognition that we are on track with the school improvement work that is in progress to achieve success. The full report is available on the school website.

Hereford Scottish Country Dance Club celebrates 70 Years
The Hereford Scottish Country Dance Club was formed in 1949 and is celebrating its 70th Anniversary this year. It was, however derived from even earlier beginnings. Towards the end of the last war, the Superintendent Physiotherapist at the Hereford County Hospital organised keep fit classes including old time dancing, for patients and staff. Wing Commander Douglas Henderson of Credenhill suggested that Scottish Country Dancing be introduced and from 1946 there developed a weekly class attended by several local people. Douglas Henderson left for Africa in 1947, and was succeeded by Major Leslie Cooper who had returned from the Seaforth Highlanders. Local interest was increasing so the Hereford club was formed in 1949 under his presidency. The Club became affiliated to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society in 1952.

Each Friday, St Michael’s Hospice gives away £1,000, plus a stash of other cash prizes, in its Lottery draw.
This summer, the 1,000th weekly draw was held, meaning that since the Lottery began almost 20 years ago, countless Hospice supporters in our community have received a share of £1.5million in prize money, while at the same time helping fund the vital care provided by St Michael’s to those in Herefordshire and beyond.

This year the tournament was open to teams in the u8, u10, u12 and u14 age categories. The tournament attracted teams from Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire and Mid Glamorgan. In all there were 411 players from 45 teams. Referees were organised by Kevin Morris who used some of the clubs ‘young leaders’ to officiate the u8 games. Feedback from teams involved was extremely positive with clubs already booking places for next year’s event which takes place on the weekend of 30th & 31st May 2020.

HAND-BELL RINGING CONCERT RAISES OVER £500 FOR CHARITY
TupsleyVoice
6 | TUPSLEY VOICE AUTUMN 2019
This event is now one of the largest girls football tournament in the West Midlands. Next year we will be opening the tournament to the u16 age group and to ladies football teams.
The club would like to thank all the coaches and volunteer helpers who made this year’s event a huge success. A lot of hard work but great fun had by all.
For more information, please contact Jamie Wright
This term Year 2 have been learning about “Seaside Locations,” the children enjoyed a day out at Weston-SuperMare and also had a visit at school from the RNLI. The children learnt a great deal about keeping safe when near water and that the RNLI are a charitable institute. The children decided that it would be a good idea to raise some money for them so they did a sponsored walk around the school field and raised £601.07 for their efforts!
As part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations, a hand-bell ringing concert was held at Hampton Park United Reformed Church in July. The West Midland Bell Ensemble members travelled from as far away as Birmingham, Powys and Staffordshire to entertain us with musical items varying from Bach to The Beatles and tunes from Musicals to religious music.
It was a really enjoyable evening and over £500 was raised for the Fragile X charity (the most common cause of inherited disability) from donations received.
Tupsley Girls Football Tournament a GREAT success
It was interesting watching players hold up to 4 small bells (but only ring one!!) or ring the huge bells that required great strength. Seeing the group work as a team was fascinating; everyone counting and concentrating to ring their individual notes, with everybody combining together to make the tune.
Recently the club has started Wildcats session which offers girls form the age of 5 to 11 the opportunity to start playing football. The sessions take place each Tuesday on the sports field opposite St Paul’s Primary School from 5-6pm. New players are welcome.
Overall pass rates were again above the national averages. The College’s pass rate being 99.2% compared with the national average of 97.6%, which is a huge success story.
National benchmarks were exceeded in many subjects with particularly strong performances in English, Languages and the STEM subjects including the new vocational Engineering course which had 52% distinctions or above.

Ground Force – Pupils, Parents and Staff formed Ground Force teams this Summer to tidy up the school grounds. This included painting the playground fences in bright colours, a LOT of weeding and the planting of seeds and bulbs.
Superb A-Level results once again at Hereford Sixth Form College
Summer Fayre – The Summer Fayre organised by the Friends was a great success and raised £4770. The money raised will pay for a new computer for the hall and a replacement projector.
Chess – In May 7 pupils attended an inter-school chess competition. Two won silver and bronze medals and one was Champion. In July they attended the Herefordshire Primary Schools Chess Finals and left as Champions. 5 schools competed.
Hereford Sixth Form College was a happy place on this year’s A Level Results Day. Strong results above the national benchmark have been a feature of the College for many years and students’ performance was again excellent at both A Level and within the increasingly popular vocational courses.
they will now go on to build great futures for themselves by continuing the hard work they have shown at the College. I know that they would wish me to thank both their magnificent teachers and the wonderful support staff on their behalf, who are also part of our great success story. We are one big community and achievements like this mean so much to us all.”

The excitement of yesterday’s trip aside, the fun and games began to liven up as the final morning progressed. Finishing off the crafts from Tuesday, more chatter, more tea and biscuit, and sherry prior to another super lunch courtesy of Pam. The finale was a rousing concert by the Kindle Singers.
Events at The Whitehouse
Monday
Work Day - (Volunteers Welcome)
2-4pm - Drop in for refreshments and a natter
We’re never satisfied with the weather when growing fuchsias - it’s either too hot or too cold to grow them as we would wish to grow them. So with the sun and hot weather recently it’s been a bit of a nightmare!
7 - 10pm (3rd Fri) - Whist Club
Work Day - (Volunteers Welcome)
11am -12 - Gentle Jive, Beginners Class. Contact Matt or Sarah on 01989 750354.
Hereford & District Fuchsia Association’s Annual Show - Saturday 3rd Aug
In spite of disappointing weather at the beginning of the week, another very successful Holiday at Home was hosted at the Hampton Park URC. These are 3 day days of activities for those who find it impossible, or difficult, to go away on holiday.
For more information, contact our secretary, Peter on 01432 265744
2 - 4pm (1st Tue) - Townswomen’s Guild
Holiday at Home 2019
Work Day - (Volunteers Welcome)
A really excellent three days. Having the opportunity to share conversation, craft, games and luncheon with others does not happen too frequently. There has to be a huge vote of thanks to all who helped organise and support the holiday makers in this year’s Holiday at Home.
Tuesday
Hampton Dene Road. We have fuchsia speakers of course, but also speakers who talk on all aspects of gardening and even some with no gardening content! Our members are a lovely friendly lot - I can guarantee you will always have a laugh! Why not come along (as a visitor) and see what we are all about??
5 - 6pm Kung Fu Cadets (up to 18 years)
On our first day, Tuesday 30th July, the skies darkened and the rains fell. Our spirits were not dampened as craft and table top puzzles kept us all quite busy. Charlie Watkins came along and led a “Chairobics” moment. Lots of fun and smiles as we warmed to Charlie’s infectious enthusiasm. The lunch that followed showed just how quickly we can work up an appetite. Our afternoon entertainment was a quiz based around old photographs of Hereford. The ‘About Face Theatre Company’ presented a drama focusing on creation and the environmental responsibilities we all share.
2 - 4pm (2nd Mon) – Afternoon Tea Club - occasional speaker
However, once again, members of the above association came up trumps with over 2 hundred exhibits in their annual show, and the hall at Hampton Park United Reformed Church was awash with colour.
11-12 - Refreshments/Cafe
Friday
Christine Morris with her “Best in Show” entry

Wednesday
If anyone would like to get involved at the Whitehouse as a volunteer or want to run an event please get in touch with us by leaving a message on our answerphone 01432 268 103 or Facebook and we will get back to you, or pop into the Whitehouse on a Wednesday.
2 - 4pm (Expt 2nd Mon) - 2 hr walk with stop for refreshments
Wednesday had us all piled into two mini-buses for a trip to the Brockhampton Church. Then it was on to the Pengethley Garden Centre for a very enjoyable luncheon and some trinket shopping. Our day finished back at the Hampton Park church for yet more tea and cake.
10:30-11:15am - Very Gentle Tai Chi exercise & refreshments; £5 - Matt Hudd 07915 450 663
The cups and trophies were fairly evenly distributed amongst the members, but with Mrs Christine Morris winning a lot of them! A member for just 2 years, she once again won the Best in Show award with a beautiful fuchsia called Delta Sarah. A new member of just a few months, Mr Derek Mullett was over the moon to win the Novice Cup.
2-4pm (every 2 weeks) – Carpet Bowls
Overall highest number points in the show for the ladies went to Mrs Christine Morris and for the gentlemen Mr Peter Spitzmaul. If anyone is interested in joining this thriving association, we meet every 4th Tuesday - 7.30 p.m. at Hampton Park Church,
