Asked how he would stop church being boring for young people, the Archbishop said: ‘You stop church being boring by creating a real sense of community and there needs to be a presentation of what Jesus really is. You need to show that people are loved by God and that God can give you a real sense of direction and growth and show that life is worthwhile.’

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby met students’ questions head-on at the start of his three-day visit to the Hereford Diocese.

Speaking in an often-challenging question and answer session at Tupsley’s awardwinning Sixth Form College, the Archbishop addressed artificial intelligence, intensive farming, sexuality issues, the relationship between the Church of England and the Catholic Church and the relevance of God.

Early on Day 3 the Archbishop met in the Cathedral a small selection of pupils from many schools including the Tupsley Primary and Bishop’s schools. A Quiet Christmas - For a Change

All of us are welcome before God, and we try and model that welcome when we come together under the roofs of our churches. We are all a part of that culture of welcome - so come and be welcomed, take part in welcoming others, and welcome the Christ-child to be with you in this season and always.

District Beaver Scouts enjoy Pirate Day

Around 120 Beaver Scouts from around the Hereford Scout District recently took part in a successful Pirate Day called ‘All aboard for an Adventure at Sea’ at Broadlands Primary School. Many crafts and adventures were on offer to fill their ‘Passport’ for the day - walk the plank, sand treasure, badge making and everything else nautical - a grand day had by all.

Before leaving the Diocese for his return trip to London, the Archbishop said he had seen ‘huge imagination and creativity being exercised in the Diocese. People might look at Hereford and think it’s a nice, quiet, rural Diocese, but my goodness, there’s a lot going on and it’s wonderful to see.’

A Happy Christmas to you all.

This year I am particularly looking forward to being together at A Quiet Christmas - Sunday 22nd December, 3pm, St Paul’s. A way to mark Christmas, where it may be hard to celebrate it. A way to seek stillness in a season of clamouring. Where you can come acknowledging grief, disappointment, or unresolved conflicts tangled amidst the good news announced by the angels. A Quiet Christmas may be the only service you come to, or it may be one of many: you will be welcome.

The large site of Brockington, at the highest point of Hafod Road, has been a distinguished site for very many years. It is believed that the owner of the Hampton Park Brick and Tile Works (on the site of Tupsley Quarry) first built a grand house there. When vacated as his dwelling it became the Hereford Police Headquarters, then South Herefordshire District Council Offices and then the council offices for Herefordshire County Council, before being ultimately sold to build Brockington House Care Home and an adjacent cul de sac of nine executive homes.

St Pauls School are looking to raise money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust, the leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer. The children are seeking used postage stamps from the UK and overseas. Every stamp sent in will help. Instead of throwing away your stamped envelopes, you can help to raise funds to support research, providing information, raising awareness as well as offer support to those who need it. Primary bone cancer can occur at any age, but affects mostly children, teenagers, young adults and the elderly.

Bob was part of the infamous SAS team that seized the Iranian embassy in London in 1980, saving the lives of 19 hostages. He was in fact the first man to enter the building; using a sledge hammer when an explosive device failed to go off. He was given a tour of the home before the Ceremony and said he was amazed at the luxury and comfort; offering residents a stunning new home, with practical elements needed in a care home very subtly incorporated.

SAS Hero Opens Brockington House Care Home

On 24th October the new £12 million luxury care home, Brockington House, Hafod Road was formally opened by a former SAS hero, Bob Curry at a reception attended by more than 150 invited guests including the mayor of Hereford Councillor Kath Hey. It was decided by the Home’s owners, Dormy Care Communities, that Hereford’s rich SAS heritage should be celebrated at the Home with various nod’s and tributes throughout the house (ie room names, photographs and prints of SAS badges), which Bob was delighted to see.

The CEO of Dormy care, Helen Davies-Parsons was delighted that the architects, designers, contractors and other skilled professionals had created such a beautiful place to live, on a beautiful elevated site overlooking the city and the surrounding hills. Dormy Care already very successfully operate three Homes in Abergavenny, Dorset and Hampshire. With the success of those homes she was very confident and proud of the care that she knew Dormy would be able to offer at Brockington.

On leaving school at 15 in 1952, the standard age at the time, he started a 5 year apprenticeship in precision engineering at Aeroparts Engineering Co. in Commercial Road, the site now occupied by Morrisons Supermarket. During this period he became a very experienced bass trombonist and clarinet player in dance bands. He met his future wife Georgina in the late 1950’s, married in 1961 and after a short time in a St Owens Street flat, they moved to their current house in Heywood Ave in 1963 where they raised their 2 children, Caroline and Rachel.

Ray was also an inspiration to all the apprentices that he taught, mentored and coached during his time at Aeroparts and Hereford Group Training. He even received a rare letter from the Queen, wishing him a happy and healthy retirement, when she was told how much he had done to help young apprentices for so many years.

Very many people who have attended a funeral service at St Paul’s church, at the crematorium or at several churches in the Hereford area will recognise and remember Ray Walters in the adjacent photograph. Ray was a lay reader at St Paul’s Church, and the officiant at countless funerals during the past 30 years or so. The way he spoke at funerals was always very memorable and uplifting. Very sadly Ray died on 13 September after a long illness but even until the end he amazingly looked forward to his next life, a life which he described with wonder at all the funerals that he officiated.

Running through all this wonderful achievement, however, was his most important achievement, his Christian ministry.

The wreath may be from: An individual, a family, a club or organisation, a business, a school, a street ……

You may collect your wreath on or after 6th January 2020, if you wish to have it back. If you have any queries contact Fiona Richards, via beneficeOffice@stpaulshereford.org.uk or 01432 274490

Ray progressed his music playing to become part of the Russ Allen Orchestra, the resident band at the Park Hall Ballroom, Wormlow. All the big bands played at Park Hall, including the famous Sid Lawrence Orchestra. One evening one of Sid Lawrence’s players fell ill just before the orchestra was due to start playing. The Hereford Times reported the event because Ray, a bass sax player did a quick change into the Lawrence uniform in order to deputise, which resulted in Sid Lawrence paying tribute to Ray at the end of the night.

At the age of 10 he started playing the trombone in the Salvation Army Band. However it was not until the age of 50 that he had a life changing experience which transformed a fairly dormant faith and embarked him on his Christian ministry which has benefitted so many people. He became a Lay Reader (an unpaid minister) in 1993. He always spoke from the heart and his passion shone through, often taking his saxophone to churches where he was to conduct the sermon. The tribute he received from the Hereford Deanery Readers summarised the high regard everyone had for him:- “Ray will be sadly missed, such an enthusiastic evangelist and promotor of the work of the Holy Spirit, a lovely man and a lovely Christian”. We are sure that everyone who knew him would thoroughly endorse those words.

He was born in 1937 at 10 Clive Street, Hereford into a devout Salvation Army family. He attended St James School and together with the other children in the area was thrilled when the American Army occupied the Harold Street Barracks early in 1944 in preparation for the D Day landings. The soldiers would lean over the barracks wall and hand out candy and chewing gum to the children, something no-one could get in wartime Britain.

Work Day - (Volunteers Welcome)

In spite of a phenomenal local response, we were yet to reach the target of £750,000. However, using his charm and political skills, Dr Jeff Kramer arranged an interestfree loan from the Regional Health Authority. Also, at the last minute, we received a donation for £50,000 from the King of Saudi Arabia. Building work proceeded on schedule, and St Michael’s opened its doors to patients on 31st October 1984.

TUPSLEY VOICE WINTER 2019 | 11

I’m immensely proud of the care St Michael’s continues to provide and grateful to all who give their time and support to making our Hospice a place like no other. Being involved with St Michael’s has been an enormous privilege and proved to be a real blessing in my life; my faith in human nature soars every time I visit.

If anyone would like to get involved at the Whitehouse as a volunteer or want to run an event please get in touch with us by leaving a message on our answerphone 01432 268 103 or Facebook and we will get back to you, or pop into the Whitehouse on a Wednesday.

Occassional Event

The catalyst for St Michael’s came when I met Freda Pearce 40 years ago in July 1979. She and her ladies’ committee had already raised a remarkable £90,000 for a body scanner in Cheltenham. Together we shared the ambition to establish a hospice in Herefordshire. A new committee was formed and set about the daunting task of planning and raising funds. In spite of the obstacles, the faith of the committee never wavered from creating a fully equipped hospice.

2-4pm - Drop in for refreshments and a natter

2 - 4pm (2nd Mon) – Afternoon Tea Club - occasional speaker

Friday

Subsequently, I went into general practice in Hereford and soon became aware of my limitations when caring for people at the end of their lives. I became interested in the holistic approach to end of life care provided by the hospice movement.

2 - 4pm (Expt 2nd Mon) - 2 hr walk with stop for refreshments

Saturday 14th December; 5:00pm – Carols in the Cafe

31st October 2019 marked 35 years since St Michaels Hospice opened its doors to receive its first patient and since that date it has thrived and given care and support to thousands of people and their families. Dr Richard Miller describes how it came to be built.

Freda never lived to see the difference St Michael’s made to people’s lives. However, she would have been overwhelmed by how her inspiration helped establish one of the most highly regarded hospices in the world.

The positive impact the Hospice has had on the community, and the support it receives, is a tribute to everyone involved. St Michael’s has helped raise the standard of care locally, nationally and internationally through sharing its expertise.

Events at The Whitehouse

Wednesday

7 - 10pm (3rd Fri) - Whist Club [NOTE: 1st Fri from Jan 2020]

I spent time in several hospices. Each one welcomed me with that special atmosphere of loving care that is so familiar to all who have visited St Michael’s. I soon became convinced that Herefordshire needed a hospice of its own.

11am -12 - Gentle Jive, Beginners Class. Contact Matt or Sarah on 01989 750354.

Thursday

Dr Richard Miller

As a medical student, I spent six months helping to care for people with advanced life-limiting conditions, such as leukaemia and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Being so involved with patients and their families left a lasting impression on me.

One late summer’s day architect Nigel Dees, quantity surveyor Brian Adams and I met the sisters at Bartestree Convent. We ended the afternoon admiring the fantastic view and instinctively knew we had found the perfect location.

5 - 6pm Kung Fu Cadets (up to 18 years)

Work Day - (Volunteers Welcome)

10:30-11:15am - Very Gentle Tai Chi exercise & refreshments; £5 - Matt Hudd 07915 450 663
