Desolate Whitehouse Pub on Whittern Way soon to come alive?
Whitehouse Community Centre Refurburishment to Begin Soon Report by Keith Davenport, Tupsley Whitehouse Project Team Chairman and a North Tupsley resident. I am taking this opportunity to update you on progress being made with regard to the Whitehouse Community Centre.
refurbishment and occupancy issues of the Whitehouse Community Centre and is run as a partnership of local residents and St Paul’s Church Parochial Church Council.
Last July an application was made by the Tupsley Whitehouse Project to the Hereford City Council Development Committee for release of money previously promised to the project. The application was successful and £5,000 was released to the Project Team to enable it to look towards starting some community activity. A great deal of work has been undertaken by the Project Team and has resulted in the following:-
Objectives Achieved
Tupsley Whitehouse Project Tupsley Whitehouse Project have as their prime objective to use the existing Whitehouse Building as a shop front to advertise the fact that an active community hub exists; albeit currently not fully functioning. Tupsley Whitehouse Project is the name of the managing body for fund raising,
1: Tupsley Whitehouse Project, a limited liability company, has completed the application process to The Charities Commission for Charity Status. 2: On the first Monday of each month the Project Team hold its board meeting at the Whitehouse Community Centre. 3: On the second Monday of each month a Whitehouse Community afternoon tea is held at St Paul’s Church, where all are welcome whether from Tupsley or other areas. 33 to 35 people regularly attend. The event proved so successful that a Christmas Dinner was arranged and held at the Rose and Crown. 45 local residents attended. 4: A decision has been made by the Tupsley Whitehouse Project to attempt a face lift of the
existing Whitehouse Property using volunteer labour and donated materials. The first area for upgrading is the conversion of the offlicence area into a multifunction room. This objective has been successful in encouraging a number of additional volunteers to provide help in the redecoration process. 5: Each Wednesday afternoon this room is open to everyone and welcomed with a drink and a biscuit. A representative of the Project Team is always available to update them on the progress of the project. 6: Also, as a direct result Shirley’s Wheels (a Department of Transport backed initiative to encourage local ladies to take to their bicycles) have requested that they be given the opportunity to establish their activities at the Whitehouse Community Centre. The Project Team have agreed to this request so Shirley’s Wheels will have a presence in the building on the 1st and 2nd Saturday mornings of each month. Concluded on page 3

Santa spotted at the start line!
Hospice Festival raises nearly £4k
HOLIDAY at HOME 2016
The St Michael’s Hospice Christmas Festival held at the Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School in December has raised £3971 and money is still being received. A large crowd of adults and children worked hard to get sponsors and then took part in a 5K Santa Run (everyone was dressed as a Santa) or a 3K Lantern Walk. Stalls at the School selling gifts, decorations, Christmas cakes, hot chocolate, mince pies and more all contributed to this fantastic total.
For all retired Tupsley residents will be from the, 2nd to the 4th August.
The photographs show the enthusiastic Santa Runners and Lantern Walkers getting ready to start. There was an enthusiastic turnout of 107 Santa Runners. Ian Hammett won the 5K race in the splendid time 18 min 19 sec; followed by Matthew Beddoes who was second in 19min 49 sec; and Jeremy Trumper third placed in 21 min 57 sec. However not all were elite runners and congratulations for effort should be given to the very many much slower runners who kept going to ensure their sponsorship, with the last ones finishing in just under one hour.

TupsleyVoice Christianity Explored AND an Alpha Course St Paul’s and Hampton Park Churches are planning a new joint venture that is intended to support those seeking a better understanding of Christianity. Both programmes are for everyone, no matter who you are or how far (or little) your faith journey has taken you. The Alpha course will be running at St Paul’s Church, Tupsley after Easter. Alpha is a chance to explore the big questions of life in an informal setting. There will be food, a short talk about the basics of Christian faith and a time for discussion at the end. Anyone is welcome and there is no charge and no obligation. The course will start with lunch and be finished by 3pm and will be held at St Paul’s Church For further information contact Revd. Mark Inglis mark. inglis@stpaulshereford.org.uk Mob: 07456 651795 Christianity Explored will be run at Hampton Park Church during the Sunday evenings of May and June. The course explores the gospel of Mark, allowing you to meet Jesus in the pages of scripture and think through how that affects what life’s all about in your own way. For further information contact Revd. Martin Hardy 2revmartinhardy@gmail.com Tel: 01432 265211 This is an open invitation to all – TWO for the price of ONE – a real bargain at any cost! These courses are being offered as a joint venture by the churches as we begin to reflect our Christian presence in this part of Hereford. Further information regarding dates and times will be published on line at www.stpaulshereford.org.uk or contact Revd’s Mark Inglis or Martin Hardy by e-mail or phone.

A Message for Easter No sooner had my Christmas chocolates been eaten than the local shops have being vying for me to buy some Easter Eggs! Fortunately for me, Lent has cropped up between the two important dates, so I can have a breather. That said, we can almost forget that Lent has little to do with giving things up and far more to do with making ourselves right before God. When Jesus wandered in the wilderness he was being tempted by the ‘devil’ with the worldly things with which we too can surround ourselves. Jesus was offered wealth beyond imagination, power over all things and a cornucopia of food. But, all these were rejected by the tormented Jesus. Rejected because they were contrary to the will of His Father, almighty God. This is how the season of Lent begins, with the victory of Jesus over temptation. The knowledge that he belongs to God and it is God alone that keeps him from falling into the trap of believing that he might rely on his powers alone. The knowledge of Scripture, of the word of God becomes a shield to protect Jesus from the ‘devil’. I do not intend giving anything up this Lent. Now, there is a surprise. I intend enjoying my occasional bar of chocolate whilst trying to ensure that I do not take the easy option of being sidetracked by all that surrounds me in this world of plenty. What I shall do is take advantage of re-reading that part of the scriptures in the light of the example Jesus has given, has laid before us – of always turning to God. For non-Christians this time of year might seem a little perplexing. The truth is that people today can be a little impatient with the concept of Christianity as a structure of doctrine that is not properly understood. What they want is a religion as personal therapy, an emotional uplift, a celebration, if you will, of human values and virtues. The harder truth is that during the season of Lent the Christian faith has more to do with our regret at personal sin and the movement away from the grace of God. Sometimes, simply, because it is a difficult path to tread and the easy option is to blame others and grumble at Christians. The example placed before us by Jesus as he wandered in the wilderness is that he discovered, no, re-discovered the strength that he drew from his Father. He turned aside from all temptation and placed his whole being into the hands of God. As we move inexorably towards the terrifying climax of Easter we too need to discover, or re-discover the strength that can be drawn from almighty God, through the sacrifices made by his Son, Jesus Christ. “The longest journey we shall ever make”, wrote the theologian Dag Hammarskjold, “is the journey to the inner wilderness. It is through that wilderness we must go to discover holiness”. Enjoy your chocolates, I shall mine. Every blessing on you all, Revd Martin Hardy Hampton Park United Reformed Church.

Do you find yourself wondering what to do next? Do you feel you would like to meet more people? Do you just wish you had someone to talk to? Do you have a twinge of conscience that you ought to be doing something for the community?
Furthermore, you could of course become a helper yourself and join the team of nearly 40 volunteers who all give one morning a month to help make the Community Coffee Shop the success it is. Although 14 years ago when it started, all the helpers came from the two Tupsley churches, it has always regarded itself very much as a community venture and today less than half of the helpers are churchgoers. Organisations such as your Coffee Shop, are always on the look-out for helpers, so if helping at a Coffee Shop doesn’t appeal to you or Wednesdays are inconvenient, then one of the helpers will soon be able to introduce you to another community organisation which could do with some help. The types of help available in a community like ours are endless. It is certain that if you feel you want to help, then it is certain that somewhere in Tupsley is an organisation which has an opportunity and need to match what you feel able to give.

TupsleyVoice Snake’s Head Fritillary Day on the Lugg Meadows The nationally rare snake’s head fritillaries which thrive on Tupsley’s Lugg Meadow only flower for a few weeks in April. Hereford Gang Show When Hereford Gang Show takes to The Courtyard stage at the end of March, this unique bi-annual variety show for all the family will be a more special occasion than normal. The 2016 show will be the 25th Hereford Gang Show, and to prove that variety is not dead, this show features the largest cast of young people ever. Around 150 cast members have been rehearsing since the end of September under the eyes of producer Ian Strangward, who told us “we wanted this show to be both a tribute to shows past as well as looking forward, so we’ve put together a mixture of songs old and new and some of the best sketch and comedy items from previous shows alongside brand new material. The average age of our cast is younger than ever, and we’re delighted to have so many of them even if it brings a number of logistical headaches with it ! “ Some of the cast members are from Tupsley. who said at rehearsals. ‘We’re having a wonderful time in rehearsal and getting to know lots of members of the cast from other troops’ ‘I’m enjoying learning some of the old songs as well as some that I recognize myself.’ The show, which runs from 29th March until 2nd April, promises to be another hugely popular event, and tickets are selling well, so get your tickets from The Courtyard Box Office now!
Waggy Tails – a new dog walking & pet minding service Just like humans, pets require a good balanced diet and frequent exercise to stay healthy. An exercised pet is generally calmer at home and less nervous when left alone. However, not all owners have the time, or for various reasons are unable, to exercise their animals as much they would like. Or you may be going on holiday and would prefer your pet to be looked after in your own home. To overcome these problems, and more, Sarka Wear who lives in Tupsley with her husband and two children has started Waggy Tails Tupsley. This is a new family run local business that offers a range of pet minding services such as exercising and feeding pets and even cleaning the rabbit hutch. Sarka can tailor her services to your needs. Details on Facebook, ring 07799 967 649 or e mail: waggytailstupsley@hotmail.com.

New Junior Mayor Angharad Knight with Hereford City Mayor and the retiring Junior Mayor
Aylestone pupil is Junior Mayor Angharad Knight, a past pupil at St Paul’s Primary School and now a pupil of Aylestone Business and Enterprise College, is very proud to have been awarded the title of Junior Mayor for the next 12 months. A competition was held across schools to find a Junior Mayor. 11 candidates applied, which was whittled down to one winner. “Angharad was unanimously selected as she had the best credentials for this post,” said city mayor Charles Nicholls. “She will assist me for the next six months in my mayoral year and then the six months of the next mayor. “To experience two mayors is quite a nice touch as she will then get two different experiences. She will go to civic events and other formal events which are suitable for a girl her age. “We think the role is a vital part of encouraging young people to become involved in the community and that is really her role this year.” Angharad is a keen Latin and ballroom dancer and will be helping the mayor to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society and Riding for the Disabled over the next six months. Agharard, who was appointed to her prestigious post during a special ceremony in November said, “I’m very much looking forward to it and I feel so excited about the role. I would like to thank Aylestone School for helping me apply for the post and I hope to represent young people well in my role.” TUPSLEY VOICE SPRING 2016 | 7

TupsleyVoice Danish Student loves life at Blind College My name is Caecilie and I am a 19 year old girl from Denmark currently studying at The Royal National College for the Blind (RNC). I lost my vision in 2014 due to two different accidents. It was very hard to cope with in the beginning as I felt as if a lot of opportunities in life had disappeared. I finished High School in Denmark last summer and then decided to take a gap year to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I really wanted to travel and experience something new, so my Dad did some research on the internet and found out about RNC.
BLACKSMITH STUDENT ARTIST CREATES MEMORIAL AWARD FOR RUGBY CLUB A BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing student from Hereford College of Arts (HCA) has been commissioned to create an award in memory of Hereford Rugby Club stalwart, John Leeuwangh, who passed away in the summer of 2015. Final year student Gabriel Chaille, from Illinois, USA, was commissioned to carry out the project by John’s widow Sue, and their two sons Jon and Paul. The junior section at Hereford had been Mr. Leeuwangh’s creation, and the rest of the family thought it would be fitting to honor him by presenting the club with a Clubman of the Year: Junior Section award. After weeks of hard work and many challenges designing and creating the award, Sue visited Gabe at HCA’s Universitylevel campus on College Road where he presented her with the award. “Mrs. Leeuwangh was brought to tears on seeing the award, and said that that it was better than she had dared hope,” said Gabriel. “That moment made all the frustrations of the project fade away as I was struck by the power of something I had made eliciting such an emotional response.” Gabriel and BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing Course Leader, Del Done, were then invited to the club to watch the Hereford vs Worcester Wanderers game. Hereford won the match 10-3, and in the clubhouse after the game a speech was made in tribute to Mr. Leeuwangh, and Gabriel and the Leeuwangh family officially presented the award to the Club.
Coping with Bereavement & Loss A practical workshop is to be held offering strategies and advice to cope with loss in a positive way on Saturday 9 April from 10 – 12 noon at Gwen Walford Wellbeing Centre, Hampton Park Road, Tupsley. The workshop costing £25 per person is taking led by Psychotherapist Rebecca Edmonds who can be contacted on 07846 891868 or Web: redmondshypnotherapy.co.uk where information about her techniques is available.
I thought it sounded a really good place to be and I immediately applied for it. I have now been at the college for a month and I really love being here. The first week was a bit overwhelming as I had to not only settle in a new country, speak a new language and meet a lot of new people – I had to do it all while being totally blind. Being at college has already given me a lot. I have made some great friends who I love spending time with and whether you’re in the mood for having a laugh or just talking, there’s always someone to hang out with. Besides that, being around other visually impaired people has given me a lot more confidence about being blind. I used to feel very insecure using a white cane, but then I came here and it is just a normal part of the day. My dream is to study psychology at university and RNC will definitely be a good step on the way to prepare myself for that. During the last year I have come to the conclusion that losing your sight does not necessarily mean that your life has become more miserable with fewer opportunities. In fact, it has taught me a lot and made me set some goals which I probably would not have had before.
Government support for Hereford University Fantastic news: On 25 November the Government came out in support of our long-term project to build a new university focused on engineering in Herefordshire. The Spending Review on 25 November delivered by the Chancellor committed to providing dedicated support for the project. In a letter to me, the Chancellor wrote that he hopes “this will allow the institution to start teaching the engineering students of the future that our country needs before the end of the Parliament.” As you know, I believe this could be the most important single development for Herefordshire since the building of Hereford Cathedral. There is still a great deal of work to do. But that announcement is a massive step forward, and testimony to the hard work put in by team leaders Karen Usher and David Sheppard, and all involved with the project. Jesse Norman MP

TupsleyVoice Martha Trust Open Day On Tuesday 13th October 2015 we were delighted to welcome HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO for a visit at Sophie House. Her Royal Highness came to gain an understanding of the work carried out by the Martha Trust Charity. The visit came at an auspicious time for the Charity as Sophie House had just completed its’ third year of operation, and Martha Trust was approaching its’ twentieth year in Hereford, which we are now celebrating in 2016!
Hampton Dene Pupils Discover Gilbert & Sullivan Year 6 pupils from Hampton Dene Primary School enjoyed class a workshop with the local Gilbert and Sullivan Society. They learned a few songs from ‘Patience’ – the show about the aesthetic movement prevalent at the time (1880s). They also got to dress up in character. Alex Quinn looked the part as Reginald Bunthorne, the leading male and romantic poet; while Molly Cheshire looked resplendent as Patience – a humble dairy maid. The children also marched in unison to the song: ‘Soldiers of our Queen’. Later on in the term, they will be heading off to the Courtyard Theatre to see a full scale production of ‘Patience’ and judging by their enthusiasm at the workshop, they’re going to be in for a treat!
RSCM Singers Workshop & the Queen’s Birthday Party Celebration On Saturday 11 June, there are two events at St Paul’s Church. From early afternoon the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) are hosting a singers’ workshop called “O Taste and Sing” at St Paul’s Church. It is based around “bringing to life” church music that is accessible to all, regardless of ability. Revd Andrew Towner (son of Hereford’s Rural Dean, Paul Towner) will be leading the event.
We received lots of positive feedback from everyone who attended. The day gave our residents’ parents an opportunity to meet other families and generally get to know each other. We have decided to expand on this and open the doors to Sophie House again this year to give all our supporters an opportunity to meet the residents, staff, parents and Trustees. It will be possible to have a tour of the building and to see the work carried out by the Charity and of course to have a sit down and chat over a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake. The Open Day will be held on Thursday 14th April. Sophie House will be open to the public between 10.00am and 12.00, when it will close to enable the residents to have their lunch. It will reopen at 14.30 – 16.30. Coffee, tea and other light refreshments will be served during both sessions. We are particularly looking forward to being able to welcome our local neighbours in Tupsley to our Open Day. 2015 was a very busy year for Martha Trust and one of our main projects was the refurbishment of our four sensory rooms. The latest technology available for sensory stimulation is fantastic and we purchased equipment which will enable all our residents to benefit from the use of these sensory environments, with each room having a different theme. We also purchased two new minibuses to add to our existing fleet giving us eight vehicles in total enabling the staff to take the residents on outings, to appointments and on holidays. We do hope that you will come to our Open Day, especially if you have never been before, so that you can meet our staff and volunteers and see what we do. Sarah Sharp-Smith, Founder and Trustee
From 4.30 until 6.00 pm, in the Church Community Centre, there will be an afternoon tea party to celebrate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, with tea, coffee, biscuits and scones. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge - but there will be an opportunity to give a donation should you wish. For more details, or to book for either of these events, please email herefordrscmevents@gmail.com or call Jon Weller, publicity officer for the local RSCM on 07850 019489 before the end of May. It is important that we know numbers by this time in order to cater correctly.
