T IMELINE
A young engineer named Bert Turner buys Nichols Construction Company out of bankruptcy. The company specializes in industrial construction, heavy equipment, hauling, rigging and equipment rental. It doesn’t take Turner long to realize that the industrial construction industry is a series of peaks and valleys. So, he begins to take steps to ensure a steady stream of revenue, embarking on industrial contract maintenance and other services which fulfill the needs of his clients. In 1968, he hires Roland Toups, who currently serves as Executive Chairman.

Mr. Turner begins to acquire companies and add additional services like scaffolding, as well as continually expanding the equipment fleet and buying bigger cranes. These moves provide the company with opportunities to manage and control most of the elements that make up construction, maintenance and turnaround work.
The Turner group enters the fabrication business, forming International Piping Systems, and introduces a pipe bending process that revolutionizes the pipe fabrication business in the United States. The company participates in many of the large industrial construction projects being built in the Gulf South at the time.

Industrial specialty services, such as NDE and inspection services, specialized welding, and environmental remediation are added to fill client needs as they arise. Proprietary programs are developed internally to better track and manage work.
The early companies consolidated into one entity—Turner Industries Group—with four main business lines: Construction; Maintenance & Turnarounds; Pipe and Module Fabrication; and Equipment and Specialty Services. Five fabrication facilities located across the Gulf South make Turner the largest privately held fabricator in the United States.
A focus at Turner this decade is digitizing the wealth of data generated by our employees and at our clients’ jobsites to make data-driven decisions that reduce costs, save time and improve safety metrics. Our everevolving DECIDE WITH DATA® software and services portfolio offers a digital “toolbox” that can solve critical client productivity, reliability, and safety issues. The company begins building ‘one stop’ hiring and training facilities and opens new regional offices in Geismar and Hahnville Louisiana; Pensacola, Florida; and Freeport, Texas.

We Proudly Celebrated Our 60th Anniversary 2021 marked our 60th year of business. In the company’s earliest days, when Bert had only a dedicated work crew and a few pieces of equipment to his name, the secret weapon for catapulting the company to be the industry leader it is today was Bert Turner’s innovative vision. By combining an always-expanding list of client-driven solutions with a portfolio of proprietary technology, Bert created an unparalleled business advantage. Today, we pay homage to Bert’s endeavors and the legacy of industrial innovation that Turner employees continue to live by each and every day.
We Announced Our Gulf of Mexico Operations In winter of this year Turner Industries acquired the New Iberia Facility from Dynamic Energy Services in New Iberia, Louisiana. The addition of this facility and key personnel expands Turner Industries’ capacity and creates one of the industry’s most capable large-scale module fabrication yards. The facility is the cornerstone of Turner’s new Gulf of Mexico Operations, which will strengthen and diversify the company’s current service offerings for opportunities with both new and existing clients. Turner’s capability to meet demand from heavy industry while streamlining workflows, controlling project costs, and most importantly, providing a safe work environment, is continuing to grow. The site’s direct access to deep water and major interstates means modules can be efficiently shipped across the country and offshore — allowing for upstream, midstream, downstream, and subsea fabrication.
We Launched Our New Subsidiary Turner Industries Energy Services This past fall we announced the creation of Turner Industries Energy Services, created to allow our portfolio of companies to pursue opportunities in the alternative and emerging energy sectors. Turner has a history of successfully completed renewable projects behind us, and we’re excited to continue supporting the global transition to a lower carbon energy future.
We Continued to Expand Our Proprietary Digital Innovation, Turner Tablet Applications™ Developed to reduce the burden of administrative work by digitizing and automating paper-based forms and tasks, Turner’s propriety tablet applications are harnessing our innovative spirit to deliver client-driven solutions. In 2021, we rolled out more tablets than ever before, increasing productivity, adaptability, collaboration, and efficiency at jobsites across the country—setting the pace for the future of work in our industry.
We Opened Our New State-of-the-Art HoustonArea Personnel and Training Facility In the winter of 2022 Turner Industries opened the door to our newest hiring and personnel facility in Pasadena, Texas. This state-of-the-art building is a ‘one stop shop’ for job applicants, allowing them to interview, complete medical testing and orientation as well as site-specific safety and craft training.
Data-Driven Decisions at Your Fingertips MobilOps™ from Turner Industries is an integrated plant and field operations software suite that allows you to confidently manage and leverage critical data to reduce costs, increase safety, stay compliant and minimize downtime. Today the expanded MobilOps suite is an effective solution to digitize data and achieve PSM excellence, and it can be combined with the client’s legacy software. Now in growth mode, MobilOps’ installed base has doubled over the past year and ISG has become a valued partner to industrial sites across the country.

safety In 2021, Turner Industries continued its mission of providing first-class services and solutions safely to our clients. However, the year did not come without its challenges. The ongoing global pandemic and natural disasters—in the form of hurricanes, flooding, and historical freezes—were obstacles our employees had to face in addition to their day-to-day challenges. During these uncertain times what remained certain was our unwavering commitment to the safety of our employees, our client facilities, and everyone we work with. At Turner Industries safety is not just a priority, because as evidenced in the past few years, priorities can change. At Turner, safety is the foundation of our company culture. Our continued industry-leading safety record is the result of a set of core values and beliefs we hold and the shared belief that zero-incident performance is possible. 2021 Safety Focus – Human Performance Factors ”Our company continues to be recognized as a leader in safety and health throughout our industry. The type of success we’ve achieved can only be realized with a strong value-based safety approach and the commitment and contributions of each Turner employee. As our safety successes continue to evolve, we are constantly searching for new and innovative strategies to further ensure the safety of each employee and the protection of company and client assets. Our latest innovation is the launch of our Human Performance Initiatives. Designed to analyze individual, organizational, and environmental factors that lead to ultimate safety performance, our Human Performance Initiatives will bring a greater understanding of the factors influencing individual decision-making which affect overall success. With a focus on the work to be performed, the worker(s) performing that work, and the environmental factors that affect safe execution, we can further predict and enhance end-level results for the best overall performance. Turner Industries was awarded an Associated Builders and Contractors STEP Award – Gold Level.
Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV) presented Turner with an award in recognition of safely delivering on all GCGV project commitments.
Turner also received multiple awards from local ABC chapters, including an Excellence Award for work performed at Indorama Ventures Restoration Project in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and a Merit Award for our work during the FHRCC Turnaround at Flint Hills Resources in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance (GBRIA) recognized Turner with a 2021 GBRIA Contractor Safety Excellence Award.

Shell Norco presented Turner with a Rockstar Award for the “Rock Dat” Turnaround. Turner-Built Project Receives ExxonMobil ‘Global Project’ Award On January 17, 2022, the president of ExxonMobil’s Global Projects, Jon Gibbs, announced the winners of the 2021 ExxonMobil Global Projects President’s Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSH&E) Awards. ExxonMobil’s Polypropylene Growth Project (PPG) in Baton Rouge was named one of the three winners in the large project category, and the only North American award recipient. As the general construction contractor of the PPG Project, Turner Industries has worked closely with ExxonMobil on the new polypropylene production unit.

Founded in 1989 as a safety benchmarking and improvement tool, STEP has evolved into a world-class safety management system that dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 25 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents.

STOP WORK Week May 17 - 21 was designated STOP WORK Week at Turner Industries. At Turner, all employees have the authority and obligation to suspend a work task or group operation when it is perceived that an unsafe condition, act, error, omission, or lack of understanding exists. The STOP WORK Authority program is about accountability and communication and is based on three pillars: • CARE – The willingness to confront an issue. • CONCERN – The willingness to speak up. • COURAGE – Trust that your message will be taken seriously. To make the week more interactive and to increase the engagement of our employees, the corporate health and safety department invited employees to create a tagline for our STOP WORK Program. The contest’s goal was to create a memorable phrase to be used as the official slogan of Turner’s STOP WORK Authority program. The contest turned out to be a huge success and received an amazing 732 entries! While there were many great entries from across the company, the winning tagline was submitted by Chase Rayburn, an auto mechanic at Oxy in Geismar, Louisiana, who submitted the tagline:
“When in doubt, talk it out.” Exactly what we empower our employees to do.

Safe and Sound Week 2021 The week of August 9 - 15 was OSHA Safe + Sound Week, a nationwide event held each August recognizing the successes of workplace health and safety programs and offering information and ideas on how to keep America’s workers safe. As in years prior, Turner Industries was a proud participant. In 2021, the focus was on hand safety. Presentation materials were distributed company-wide to be used during daily toolbox meetings. Each day focused on a specific aspect of hand safety and how to avoid hand, finger and wrist injuries. Over a quarter of a million people suffer serious (and often disabling) hand injuries each year. By educating our employees, recognizing hand hazards, following established safety guidelines, and using protective guards, shields, gloves, and other personal protective devices as needed, we work to eliminate injury and disability.

2021 Site-Specific Safety Initiatives In addition to company-wide safety programs, individual sites create their own initiatives based on current work efforts and site hazards. The following is a sample of those initiatives.

Work Smart. Win Big. Turner Industries. With a kickoff date of October 11, the 2021 Ethylene Turnaround at the Sasol Lake Charles Chemical Complex in Westlake, Louisiana was a fifty-day event to perform maintenance, repairs, and capital projects. As the general contractor, in addition to the 700 maintenance employees on site, Turner Industries brought in 715 additional personnel from our turnaround services group, the SIPA group (scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement), Turner Specialty Services, and the crane and rigging group. Since the turnaround was performed during football season, each day, a “Play of the Day” was chosen to recognize individuals or groups who make significant contributions to the event, which was completed with zero OSHA recordables. Every “Play of the Day” winner was photographed and the photo, along with a written summary, was uploaded to a custom web page that was accessible to the public.

Shell Deer Park Safety Survivor Tournament On-site since 2006, Tuner Industries currently has over 700 employees providing mechanical, SIPA (scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement) and rope access services at the Shell Deer Park complex. In the fall of 2021, on-site employees completed a new initiative created to reiterate Turner’s culture of safety and foster employee engagement and empowerment— the Shell Deer Park Safety Survivor Tournament.
THE RULES Across the site, every work group was tasked with giving a presentation to their peers about a safety topic they felt passionate about. The groups were entered into a 16-team bracket, and site management scored each presentation to determine who advanced to the next round. “Instead of reading information from a print-out, we challenged everyone to use alternative methods and bring energy and enthusiasm to the meetings. Groups were given as much creative liberty as they wanted, and it showed. Teams used videos, PowerPoint, skits, hands-on demonstrations, and even heavy equipment to demonstrate their topics,” said Turner Site Manager Chris Sciambra. After all presentations were given and site management tallied up the scores, the winning team was the Tank Soft Craft group. This group went above and beyond from day one to display their creativity and commitment to safety. The first topic they presented was about “why we work safe” and included video messages from several employees’ family members. Their second-round presentation covered a scenario about working without a permit and showcased the power of our STOP WORK Authority program. And their winning final round topic instructed everyone how to call emergency response.

Collaborating with Clients to Achieve Success At Turner Industries we believe in working together with our clients as a team to achieve the highest level of safety and success. Open lines of communication and transparency are key factors to a safe and successful project—here are a few examples:

Thriving Together On Wednesday, May 5, 2021, Turner Industries employees at Shell Deer Park, as well as Shell representatives, came together to celebrate a variety of accomplishments. Through the theme “Thriving Together – Success Through Adversity,” the event recognized Turner’s Construction and Maintenance Divisions at Shell Deer Park achieving 1,300,000 OSHA recordable-free workhours over the past year. The hours were successfully achieved during the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2021 historic Texas freeze in February of the past year.
“It was great being able to celebrate the achievement of such a remarkable milestone, one that is not easily achievable in normal circumstances, but then to throw a pandemic in the mix and many other external factors that were part of our daily lives really creates a risk to our safety culture and the way we care and protect people daily. Turner was able to work through that adversity to deliver work in the field safely, but above all, showed care for people,” said Shell Construction Manager Matthew S. Provenzano.

Partners in Excellence As the nested contractor, Turner Industries and Rubicon have built a successful relationship over the past 12 years. Turner has performed over 60 turnarounds on site in addition to daily maintenance and construction. On April 7th, 2021, the site hosted a celebration in recognition of the outstanding safety, maintenance, and turnaround performance over the past year. The event was attended by employees, on-site contractors, and executive leadership from Rubicon and Turner. “Over the past year, despite many challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, we have successfully completed business-critical maintenance and turnarounds in every unit across the site, with a focus on safety, quality, and efficient execution. This can only be achieved with outstanding teamwork, trust and the belief that we succeed as a ‘One Solution Family’ in all that we do,” said Rubicon Plant Manager and Director of American Operations Mark Dearman.

workforce development Turner Industries has always been on the leading edge of workforce development. We invest heavily in the time and resources necessary to attract and retain a quality workforce. By making major commitments to in-house innovations and partnership initiatives, we ensure the ability to provide our clients with the skilled craftspeople and management necessary for their success. In 2021, our efforts reached a new high with the opening of our latest state-of-the-art hiring and training center built for the Houston, Texas area. Our tireless workforce development team traveled across the country mentoring and teaching the next generations of industry leaders—efforts which were recognized both on local and national levels. Donations to high schools and secondary education programs exceeded $325,000, and Turner Industries President and CEO Stephen Toups led by example, serving the first two-year term as the National Center for Construction Education and Resource’s (NCCER) 2021 board of trustees’ chairman.

Turner Industries has opened the doors to our newest hiring and personnel facility. Built to better serve our Houston-area clients and employees, this 33,093-square-foot state-of-the-art building will be a “one stop shop” for job candidates, allowing them to interview, complete medical testing and orientation as well as site specific safety and craft training—shortening the “time to field” from days to hours. “We are very excited to have opened this facility; this is our largest personnel and training facility to date. Our goal is always to service both our clients and employees to the best of our ability and this facility enables us to do just that. We can now get our employees trained, certified and ready for the jobsite faster than ever before. For the clients, this means employees are processed, trained and ready to go to work faster. Workers can also receive additional training to drive efficiencies on site. For the employees it means that we can now make it easier for them to either start their careers, or to receive additional training to advance their careers,” said Turner Industries President and CEO Stephen Toups.

McNeese State University First Choice Campaign In 2021, Turner Industries made the final $100,000 installment of the pledged $300,000 donation to the McNeese State University First Choice campaign. Helping provide necessary resources to sustain growth in high demand academic areas, the campaign supports the economic expansion and quality of life in Southwest Louisiana. Turner Industries is one of several local industry partners and contractors investing in McNeese and the greater region’s future through the First Choice Campaign.

President and CEO of Turner Industries Stephen Toups visited Southeastern’s Science and Technology Building to meet faculty and students and learn firsthand the offerings available to students in the department.

Stephen Toups Elected NCCER 2021 Board of Trustees’ Chairman Turner Industries’ President and CEO Stephen Toups was elected to serve as the National Center for Construction Education and Resource’s (NCCER) 2021 board of trustees’ chairman. NCCER’s mission is to build a safe, productive, and sustainable workforce of craft professionals. NCCER’s board of trustees consists of representatives from contractors, owners, and partner associations. All trustees are recognized for their expertise in construction or construction-related issues. Stephen is the first to serve a two-year term in this position. 26

Turner Industries Workforce Development Manager Carla Thompson Recognized As 2020 Phillip Maddox ABC/ CMEF Volunteer of the Year and 2021 Committee Chair of the Year Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston (ABC) recognized Turner Workforce Development Manager Carla Thompson as the 2020 Phillip Maddox ABC/CMEF Volunteer of the Year at the annual 2021 Inaugural Celebration.

Carla has an extensive resume when it comes to workforce development efforts and is closely engaged in the Construction Careers Youth Committee student career development events, CTE Advisory Committee meetings, the annual Construction Careers Exposition, Girls Construction Camp, and High School NCCER Accreditation Audit Team. She has served as a presenter at the CMEF Workforce Breakfast, the CMEF Instructor Professional Development Series, and the Ready for Industry Boot Camp classes. She has also facilitated the opportunity for high school field trips to the Turner Industries pipefitting fabrication site in Pasadena. “As an ITC member, Ms. Thompson has fully supported the craft training program courses at the CMEF sponsored colleges as well as at CMEF. She has been influential in leading her employer to sponsor 17 high schools and has facilitated much needed donations such as welding supplies and material, power tools, PPE, etc. Additionally, she has made herself available to serve on four area Independent School District CTE Advisory Committees and supports the regional Skills USA District 8 Competition. We are very appreciative for Ms. Thompson’s efforts and are pleased to present her with this distinguished award,” said Executive Director at ABC’s educational affiliate, Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF) Michael Richter.

Careers in Construction Month The month of October is designated as Careers in Construction Month. This national program is promoted by NCCER’s Build Your Future program, an online campaign aimed at educating students about careers in construction. In 2021, Turner’s Workforce Development team hit the road to visit with students across the Gulf South. For example, Workforce Development Manager Bryan Gerace traveled to eight different partner high schools across Louisiana to speak about careers in construction as well as at Turner Industries. Bryan traveled over 300 miles and spoke to over 350 students. Turner Training coordinator Darrien Batiste was also on the road, visiting high schools across Texas. Darrien wore multiple hats during his travels, from giving “Expectations of a Fabrication Helper” presentations to facilitating certification testing of welding students.

Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance 2021 Workforce Development Awards Turner Industries Group and Turner Specialty Services once again received the Excellence Awards for their categories at the 2021 GBRIA Workforce Development (WFD) Awards. Turner Industries Group was awarded an Excellence award for General Construction and Maintenance Division III and the Best in Division award for Division III. Turner Specialty Services won the Excellence award for Technical Support Division II and the Best in Division award for Division II.

Workforce development is a total company effort. Under the guidance of our workforce development management team the staff maintains relationships with high schools, technical colleges, communities, and training organizations. They create an environment where craft training is accessible to all through trade associations, technical colleges and grant programs, assuring an attainable path to craft certifications through internal processes, NCCER, NCCCO and other certifying organizations.

Turner Industries proudly graduated another set of leadership classes from Baton Rouge, Louisiana as well as Freeport, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, and Houston, Texas. This twelve-week program continues Turner’s commitment to increase internal career advancement and maintain a culture of leadership development. In addition to enhancing leadership capabilities, course-led objectives include improving communication and problem-solving skills. These 2021 graduates represent future leadership and help ensure continued growth and success within the Turner organization.

This past fall Turner Industries announced the creation of Turner Industries Energy Services, created to allow our portfolio of companies to pursue opportunities in the alternative and emerging energy sectors. Turner already has a history of successfully completed biodiesel, solar and carbon capture projects under its belt, and we look forward to playing a part in the world’s transition to a lower carbon energy future. “While we still want to build and maintain petrochemical facilities, we’re going to continue growing our solar, biodiesel, and carbon capture portfolio,” said Turner President and CEO Stephen Toups. “Our customer base is moving towards the Paris Accords, and we want to support them in anything they need.”

Pipe Fabrication Flips the Switch on Newly Installed, Low Energy LED Lights Welding and bending pipe at Turner Industries’ Port Allen, Louisiana and Paris, Texas pipe fabrication operations has gotten a little brighter, literally, with the installation of new low-energy light fixtures throughout the campus’ various buildings. Completed last fall, the transition to new overhead LED fixtures from the original High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures provides multiple benefits including decreased facility maintenance and increased visibility. Another benefit, up to 30% reduction in energy usage, is equivalent to removing 870 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere annually.

Electric Vehicles + Charging Stations In our continued sustainability efforts to actively conserve the environment, Turner Industries is currently installing electric vehicle charging stations at multiple facilities in Texas and Louisiana. Being a responsible member of the communities where our employees and clients live and work is a vital part of our company culture. In 2021, Turner Industries invested millions back into our communities—including our Gulf of Mexico Operations in New Iberia, Louisiana. This existing facility, located at the Port of Iberia, will bring economic enhancement and job opportunities to the area, on top of allowing us to better serve our clients. The year presented many challenges. While still dealing with a global pandemic, many parts of the country dealt with extreme weather situations, from unusual freezing temperatures to devastating hurricanes. In winter of 2021 Turner Industries acquired the New Iberia Facility from Dynamic Energy Services in New Iberia, Louisiana. The addition of this facility and key personnel expands Turner Industries’ capacity and creates one of the industry’s most capable large-scale module fabrication yards. The facility is the cornerstone of Turner’s new Gulf of Mexico Operations, which will strengthen and diversify the company’s current service offerings for opportunities with both new and existing clients. The site’s direct access to deep water and major interstates means modules can be efficiently shipped across the country and offshore — allowing for upstream, midstream, downstream, and subsea fabrication. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the Port of Iberia. The fact that Turner Industries chose the Port of Iberia over 29 other coastal ports speaks to how important our port infrastructure is. United Way Campaign Ambassadors The success of Turner’s United Way campaign has always relied heavily on the fact that the corporate campaign team is able to have face-to-face interactions with our employees. When COVID restrictions put a halt on outside visitors to active jobsites, a “Campaign Ambassador program” was quickly created and piloted at Olin in Freeport, Texas. This program— expanded for the 2021-22 campaign—trains our on-site employees to tell the Turner-United Way story and deliver pertinent information. At the piloted Olin facility, with over 350 Turner employees onsite, the team of ambassadors presented to their coworkers during toolbox meetings across the complex. This resulted in record-breaking participation at site levels. “Leadership is influence, and this team did an outstanding job of influencing our Olin site employees to do what Turner does, lead in United Way giving.” – Turner Site Manager at Olin Ryan Beeson.

Hurricane Ida Relief Efforts When Hurricane Ida made landfall in Grand Isle, Louisiana on August 29th, 2021, it was the secondmost damaging and intense hurricane to hit the state of Louisiana, behind Hurricane Katrina in 2005. With over 10,000 employees and numerous clients located in Ida’s path, Turner Industries quickly assembled its Hurricane Response Team and set up shop at the Equipment Division’s yard in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

On August 31, a company-wide survey was sent out to employees and over the next week, the relief team spoke to nearly ONE THOUSAND employees who indicated in the survey that they had to evacuate, had major damage to their home, or needed immediate assistance. During the following weeks, the Equipment Division, Turner Specialty Services, along with employees from many other divisions and departments, performed repairs on 200 employee and client homes. The business development team also went into disaster response mode, cooking and serving nearly TEN THOUSAND meals for employees, clients, and community members, at eleven different locations around southeast Louisiana. TEAM Turner partnered with the Capital Area United Way and Mike Anderson’s restaurant in Gonzales, Louisiana to provide meals to those in need. TEAM members also made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches which were brought out to sites for employees to take home to their children and other family members who we could not feed on site.

I N V E S T M E N T
TEAM Turner is our company-supported, employee-directed volunteer program promoting community involvement, teamwork, and camaraderie. It allows employees to identify charitable causes they wish to support and provides a structured framework through which volunteerism and resources are directed. In 2021, TEAM Turner members across the country continued their efforts by supporting schools, hospitals, veterans, volunteering at community fundraising events, and helping families both during emergencies and the holidays with food and gift donations. TEAM Turner members also serve on school boards, health organization boards, and non-profit organization boards—across the Gulf South—all with the goal of improving the lives of the members in their communities.

Equipment Yard Administrative Office Under Construction After 60 years in the original building where Turner Industries was founded, employees of the Equipment Division will move to a new administrative building in Summer 2022. The groundbreaking was held on April 20, 2021, for the new

14,000-square-foot building located just down the street from the original office. Coleman Partners Architects, LLC created a modern industrial design for the space that will complement the Equipment Maintenance and Repair Facility completed in 2014. The two buildings will sit beside one another on thirty acres. After the opening of the new office, the original building will be demolished to create more space to stage and load equipment.
