EDITOR’S NOTE

Can you believe we are already a few weeks into 2023? If you decided to make New Year's resolutions, hopefully you’re sticking to them. Statistics show that 23 percent of Americans quit their New Year’s resolutions in the first week, 36 percent make it past the first month, and only 9 percent successfully keep their New Year’s resolutions.

In this industry, sticking to and achieving your goals mean everything. At Turner, a new year brings a fresh set of goals and challenges, but there are so many exciting things happening here.

One of the marketing team’s goals is to continue to tell the Turner Industries story and spotlight the amazing employees who are a part of it. We’re excited to kick off the new year with you!

M ilestone at Shintech in Plaquemine

Turner Ind ustries began providing maintenance and support services at the Shintech facility in Plaquemine, Louisiana in 2007. Since the inception of the contract, Turner has added services along the way based on Shintech’s evolving needs. Today—in addition to a nested maintenance crew—Turner provides an array of services including turnarounds, small cap work, scaffolding, crane and rigging, as well as several specialty craft services such as inspections, hydro blasting, and rope access. The addition of services is part of Turner’s ONE solution approach , allowing clients to achieve documented cost savings while working with a trusted partner.

Over the years, working as a team and maintaining constant communication has not only resulted in a successful site, but more importantly a successful safety record. On Oct . 6, 2022, Turner employees celebrated six years and 4.2 million hours worked OSHA recordable free.

“This safety milestone is a testament to the hard work of our employees and everyone understanding their roles and responsibilities every minute, every hour, every shift—along with the incredible support we have from Shintech. As working partners, we have common goals when it comes to safety, and we can more easily achieve them by working together. We listen to them, and they listen to us. We are both transparent when it comes to sharing information, and that is why we are so successful. We are very appreciative of Shintech who—through teamwork—makes it possible for everyone to go home safely,” said Turner Site Manager Gerald “Pete” Baker.

“The safety milestone by Turner employees at our Plaquemine site is remarkable! The number of years and manhours worked OSHA free to reach this record didn’t happen by chance . It happened because the Turner employees have demonstrated a commitment to working safely each day, and this mission was supported by both Turner management and Shintech employees at our facility. We are thankful that we have been able to be a part of this accomplishment,”

What It Takes to Get the Job Done Right

Turner and Shell Employees Collaborate on Invention for Extruder

Canh Nguyen is a millwright for Turner Industries at the Shell Catalysts & Technologies plant in Port Allen, Louisiana. He has been a part of the Turner family for a decade. Over the years, Canh has been tasked with changing the vacuum screens located under the extruder on site—the heart of the catalyst manufacturing process. These screens can get plugged and sometimes torn, allowing product to escape.

To replace the screens, large blocks of piping connections that bolt to the side of the extruder must be removed. Traditionally, this has been a time consuming and awkward task where the blocks were removed by hanging rigging overhead, choking the blocks with nylon slings, and then lowering them to the ground. Then blocks were brought up and reattached once the screens were changed. The path to the ground and back up again was congested and not optimal for lowering something this large. Always thinking about how this task could be improved, Canh worked with Shell Engineer Gary Box, and together the two designed a better and safer way to conduct this task. Canh’s vision of having some sort of davit arm to remove and install these blocks came to life when Gary began the design process. Once the team realized that this idea would work, Gary sent his design out for fabrication. The result is an arm—with the ability to bend and swing—permanently bolted to the side of the extruder and strong enough to hold the heavy piping blocks. When the screens need to be changed, you simply bolt the blocks to the arm and swing them out of the way. Once the job is done, you swing back the blocks and bolt them back up. The design makes the job both easier and safer and has been named the “Flexi-Canh” in honor of Canh.

Turner’s Decatur Facility Called on Several Times for Emergency Repair Work

Turner Industries’ southeastern field services recently performed an emergency boiler repair for International Paper in Port Wentworth, Georgia. While this work was ongoing, the group was also called in for emergency repair work at Indorama Ventures Xylenes & PTA in Decatur. In addition, Turner provided emergency boiler repair work for Sylvamo in Ticonderoga, New York.

“All of these jobs were completed in a timely fashion, and all of these clients were satisfied with Turner’s work,” said Kyle Williams, senior project manager for Turner Industries. “Even with the Labor Day weekend and the holiday occurring, we moved our employees and equipment efficiently to make sure the necessary work was performed in a timely manner. It was hectic at times, but we always met our clients’ demands. For example, before our employees even made it back from Port Wentworth, the mill required additional repair work, and we had to remobilize. We did whatever we had to do to complete these jobs.”

Framing the Future Framing the Future

Turner Industries is continuing its mission of providing a “ONE solution” approach to clients nationwide, with a focus on working safely, reducing downtime, minimizing costs, increasing reliability, and achieving operational excellence. As our industry evolves and new opportunities and challenges arise, Turner is ready with a skilled workforce, innovative technologies, and strategic solutions. In this issue’s cover story, we highlight a few of the exciting things to look out for this year.

FOCUS ON THE WORK

,

Not the Paperwork

Turner Tablet Applications ™ are reducing the burden of administrative work by digitizing and automating paper-based forms and tasks. Turner is currently developing a new work package tool that can upload and categorize documents. Using a Turner Tablet Application, the tool generates a PDF of the work package that can be formatted and edited, eliminating the need for paperwork and allowing data to be created and stored. For example, this tool can not only track the status of welds but also who performed them. The work package tool is currently in the testing phase, but Turner plans to roll out the full version later in 2023.

Doubling Down IN DECATUR

Turner’s Decatur, Alabama office in the eastern region has more than doubled its business in just two years. It has added a southeastern field services group, which works specifically in the eastern U.S., and specializes in small-to-mid capital projects, boilers and furnaces, as well as maintenance, fabrication, turnaround, civil, millwright, rotating equipment, and emergency response services. The Decatur fabrication facilities have also logged back-to-back record years for 2021 and 2022. Although Turner’s primary market in this region is still the chemical manufacturing industry, it has tapped into other markets such as the discrete manufacturing, pulp and paper, and automotive industries. The Decatur facility is also home to state-of-the-art robotics for steel fabrication. “ For 2023, we are especially excited about the opportunity to support the Construction Division on several large module projects in both Port Allen and New Iberia,” said John Richard, president of Turner’s Pipe Fabrication Division. “In addition to an expanding demand from our conventional marketplace, we see a growing need for piping in emerging markets such as renewable energy, life sciences, and non-traditional fabrication.”

MAKING PIPE DREAMS A REALITY

Turner’s backlog of new pipe fabrication work has grown, and 2023 looks very promising for the Pipe Fabrication Division. The Pipe Fabrication Division has also seen an increase in the induction bending market, and it recently kicked off a large bending project made up of more than 1,000 bends for a pipeline in Alaska.

Senior Project Manager Alan King, a leader of the Cap-X team, has been tasked with maximizing Turner’s partnerships and resources throughout Texas to deliver turnkey project solutions to customers. C reating this new Cap-X team will benefit Turner’s services provided at existing sites and facilitate the addition of new customers throughout Texas.

With multiple agreements now in place, Turner continues to be a premier provider of postconstruction services for the LNG marketplace in Texas. This multi-year portfolio - of -services model has allowed Turner to lead the way in expanding energy export capacity from Corpus Christi to Sabine Pass.

Inside these LNG terminals, Turner is providing daily services that encompass the ONE s olution model, including civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, crane and rigging, scaffolding, insulation, paint and NDT/ inspection services.

A ‘Triple Aim’ BENEFITS STRATEGY

In 2023, the Turner Industries Benefits Department will focus on rolling out programs to achieve its “Triple Aim” strategy as it relates to Turner’s health plan. The components of the triple aim are to:

What ’ s Next FOR TSS

Elios 3

Turner Specialty Services (TSS) is embracing challenges and opportunities coming its way in 2023, growing its operations throughout the Gulf Coast while maintaining a safety culture of excellence. The TSS inspection team is celebrating 12 years with over 13 million workhours since its last OSHA recordable. This is a remarkable accomplishment considering TSS performs maintenance work at over 55 sites and “in-and-out ” services at over 100 sites. TSS is also utilizing the latest technologies for industrial inspections and has added several pieces of new equipment: the Elios 3 (drone), Ectane 3 (eddy current instrument), OmniScan X3 (phased array instrument), VMI Discovery 17G and VMI 5100MS systems (digital radiography), NavVis VLX (mobile laser scanning/mapping), and GE Bike Robot (3D LiDAR mapping).

The TSS industrial cleaning team is continuing to invest in its two most valuable resources: people and equipment. TSS is training technicians and supervisors to safely operate the latest innovative technology. It has also expanded its automation capabilities, investing an average of $3 million each year for the past five years to upgrade and replace its existing inventory.

With an additional $15 million of earthmoving equipment, the TSS environmental group has expanded its fleet and looks forward to putting this equipment to work as well as growing its earthwork footprint in new markets.

Combined, these groups are set to have another record-breaking year in 2023.

To help meet the objectives of our Triple Aim strategy, Turner’s benefits programs are focused on primary care, chronic disease management, and partnerships with valueminded health care providers and vendors in the communities we serve,” said Dan Burke, vice president of corporate benefits for Turner Industries. “Supplemental programs such as Nurse Navigator and virtual care also help our employees by removing some of the financial barriers to care that exist in the U.S. healthcare system.”
Improve the health of the Turner population.
Improve the care experience for health plan participants.
Reduce the cost of care to participants and the plan.

MORE TURNAROUND WORK Than Any Other Contractor

During the past year, industrial sites across the U.S. have been running at full capacity due to increased demand. As a result, these sites will require more turnaround work in 2023, and Turner’s turnaround teams are ready to meet this challenge head on. Turner’s turnaround teams will go wherever they are needed, and they expect to increase their scope of work, especially throughout Texas, in 2023.

Turner performs more turnarounds than any other contractor in the business, and its Specialized Welding Services (SWS) group can execute complete turnkey events. This will stay true in 2023 because Turner has the workforce, safety record, and experience to handle turnarounds of any size.

Excellence in Motion

The Equipment, Rigging, and Specialized Transportation Division already has plenty of transportation and turnaround-related work scheduled in 2023, and it will be partnering with the Construction Division on several sites. Three new cranes have also been added to Turner’s fleet, and they will be delivered in 2023. These include a 2023 Liebherr LTM 1250-5.1 (300 ton), a 2023 Liebherr LTM 1110-5.1 (125 ton), and a 2023 Liebherr LTM 1120-4.1 (120 ton). In addition, Equipment Division employees just made the move into a new 14,000-square-foot administrative building, located down the street from the original office.

SIPA LEADS

WITH Innovation

Turner’s SIPA (scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement) team is fully utilizing the Turner Tablet Scaffold Application and online scaffold request forms to create even more efficiencies for clients—saving them time and money. The scaffold components that the SIPA group is using on site , such as toe boards and gap fillers, have been updated to consist of all metal. Using all - metal scaffold components improves safety and productivity and reduces the replacement of wood boards.

THE PIECES TOGETHER Modular Fabrication

Multiple projects are underway at Turner’s New Iberia facility and Port Allen module yard, also known as the “415 Yard.” These sites—in addition to three other strategic locations—allow Turner to shift construction projects from the field to its facilities and make Turner the most capable module fabrication contractor in the Gulf Coast.

As the cornerstone of Turner’s Gulf of Mexico Operations, the New Iberia site’s direct access to deep water and major interstates means modules can be efficiently shipped across the country and offshore. The 415 Yard also includes 35 acres with a 24,000-square-foot module assembly building and 1,100 feet of intracoastal waterway access.

The demand for module fabrication will continue to increase in 2023. By being able to fabricate, assemble, transport and install, Turner offers a ONE solution for its clients’ modular fabrication projects.

Turner’s Maintenance Division continues to work with a commitment to excellence. Turner currently holds hundreds of maintenance contracts across the U.S., and Engineering News-Record has once again labeled Turner as the No. 1 maintenance contractor in petroleum in the country. Whether it is nested, short-term, or inand-out support services, Turner’s consolidated service offerings under one contract allow it to deliver the best value to customers. When it comes to facility maintenance, Turner is also supporting its clients’ efforts to lower their carbon footprint by introducing on -site solutions such as electric lawnmowers.

Kash McMahon

Current Title: Project Controls Manager

After more than 10 years of working onshore and offshore in the oil and gas industry, Kash McMahon joined Turner Industries in 2021. He began his career with Turner as a cost controller for Sasol’s 2021 Ethylene Turnaround, and now holds the position of project controls manager at Sasol’s Chemical Complex in Westlake, Louisiana.

A Quick Q & A with Kash

Why was Turner a great fit for you? Turner challenged me! I joined the company right before a major turnaround, and while I have been a part of some exciting and hectic events during my career, industrial construction is a “totally different beast.” My time at Turner has flown by because nothing has been the same from day to day. I appreciate that because the company has forced me to be resourceful, think even faster, and tap into different skillsets.

What do you find most satisfying about your job? Having a voice. During times that I have offered suggestions or contributions, they have been well received.

What has been your favorite moment, so far, at Turner? In the first quarter of 2022, I was tasked with implementing Turner Tablet Applications on a broader scale throughout our maintenance team onsite at Sasol. I enjoyed this task because, in such a short time, I was able to meet a lot of Turner personnel as well as interact with members of our training, field accounting support services, and technology teams.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy working out, attending collegiate and professional sporting events, and most importantly spending time with my family.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? “Be coachable.” In the beginning, most of us are not experts or the best at what we do. I am committed to personal and professional growth, and that does not happen without having an open mind and being coachable.

What are your top three life highlights so far? My top life highlights so far include these three dates: Sept . 22, 2018; Dec . 4, 2019; and May 25, 2022. These dates represent my wedding day and the births of my sons. My life is devoted to what I share with them, and I cannot imagine anything topping those moments. My wife, Danielle, and I have been married four years, and we have two sons, Krew (3) and Kross (6 months).
