LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
I
n the northern part of Alabama, an hour away from the Tennessee state line, sits the
city of Decatur. With a population
just shy of 55,000, Decatur is known as the ‘River City’ because of its location on Wheeler Lake, along the Tennessee River. The river has been a natural economic driver for the city for almost two centuries. Twelve Fortune 500 companies have facilities in the area. Industry giant General Electric to consumer brand Meow Mix® use the region’s waterways to transport raw and finished goods. It’s here, in Decatur, that Turner Industries settled in 2006, after purchasing a local fabrication facility. Since moving in, we’ve used our Decatur presence as a springboard to the Southeast region. From Hopewell, Virginia down to Pensacola, Florida, this issue’s cover story highlights our operations, the dedicated employees who make it happen and valued clients that give us the opportunity to make their sites successful.
Enjoy.

Methanex Corporation in Geismar, Louisiana recently embarked on its first major mechanical turnaround since the reconstruction of the Geismar 1 plant. The plant, originally located in Punta Arenas, Chile, was strategically cut into sections and shipped in large modules to the United States where it was reconstructed in its new home in South Louisiana and began production in January, 2015.
Now, four years later, Turner was chosen to take this facility into its first major mechanical turnaround. The event, spearheaded by Turner’s Turnaround Services Group, was supported by Turner Specialty Services (who provided hydro blasting, vacuum trucks, water jet cutting, and torquing services), the specialized welding services group, Turner’s SIPA group, our Pipe Fabrication and the Crane and Rigging Division. Turner was also charged with coordinating most other outside contractors. During the event, Methanex held two two-hour safety stand-ups with outside speakers whose lives had been impacted by on-the-job injuries. At the second safety stand-up, guest speaker Turner Executive Chairman Roland Toups gave an inspiring speech he calls “Who Packs Your Parachute,” which emphasizes the importance of each and every member of a working team. During all scheduled turnarounds at Methanex, the company holds a “Safe Days” fundraising event, benefiting a local organization. For this turnaround, Methanex partnered with the Geismar Volunteer Fire Department and pledged to donate $750 for each day of working safe. Turner pledged to match the Methanex donation by fifty percent and together the two entities raised $46,125 over the duration of the turnaround, which was completed OSHA recordable free. “I would like to thank Methanex for giving us the opportunity to perform the first major turnaround on site. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all Turner employees who played a part in this event. It was a true team effort where we really showed we are ‘One Solution’ for our client’s success,” said Project Manager Eric Lemoine.

Turner’s ‘Ascenders’ Continue Taking Services and Careers to New Heights After a successful launch last year, Turner’s Mechanical Rope Access Group has been deployed to Shell Deer Park. These “ascenders” perform, suspended at heights of up to 200 feet, a variety of skilled crafts including: pipefitting, insulating, welding, and ironwork. The crews have completed numerous jobs in the first quarter, incident and injury free, providing substantial cost savings to the client by utilizing rope access services in lieu of scaffolding and aerial lifts. Internally, the addition of rope access services has provided a new avenue for career advancement. To date, nineteen of our onsite employees have completed the Level I Rope Access SPRAT (Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians) certification course and have transitioned to the rope access group. The interest and excitement around Turner’s Mechanical Rope Access Group at Shell Deer Park, and beyond, is a testament to our most valued asset – our employees.

Coating Facility Achieves 5 STAR Status in NACE Contractor Program Port Allen, La. – The Pipe Fabrication Division’s Port Allen Coating Facility received its initial accreditation under the NACE International Institute Contractor Accreditation Program (NIICAP) in 2016. After successfully completing three consecutive audit years with outstanding scores, the site has earned NIICAP’s AS-1-S accreditation with 5 STAR status. To qualify for 5 STAR recognition, Turner’s Port Allen site had to achieve and maintain a specific score for both sections of the "AS-1" audit, which evaluates a company’s business practices, personnel availability, training practices, equipment availability, and company history. Charting a Course for Southeast Expansion
O
ver the last couple of years, Turner Industries has made strategic efforts to expand operations into the Southeast United States. Investments, in the form of new facilities and renovations, paired with increased service
offerings and a wider work radius to better serve our existing clients in those areas, will allow us to develop new relationships and open new opportunities. Turner’s Southeast operations headquarters sits on 28 acres in the city of Decatur,
Alabama. The facility was acquired by Turner in 2006. The multi-service facility expands Turner’s presence beyond the Gulf Coast region and enables Turner to offer clients a growing variety of Turner services. Services include construction, maintenance and turnarounds, fabrication and coating services, small capital projects, SIPA (scaffolding, insulation, painting and abatement) and an array of specialty services including inspection and NDE services. Today’s operation is overseen by Vice President Sean Reynolds. Over the past year, Sean has developed and implemented strategies to sustain Turner’s current southeast presence and positioned Turner for substantial growth opportunities. “We are growing our footprint, but it is important for us to manage the growth in a manner that is sustainable. Turner’s commitment to providing quality work delivered on schedule in a safe manner is always our top priority,” says Sean. In 2017, Turner signed an alliance contract with Ascend Performance Materials, a provider of high-quality plastics, chemicals and fibers. The contract awarded Turner work at multiple facilities including the one located in Decatur, where Turner employees provide routine maintenance, SIPA services, civil work and groundskeeping. Lining up with our growth strategy, Turner recently expanded our site presence, completing a large outage driven by capital expansion. During a visit to the Decatur Ascend site for this article it became immediately apparent that the owner/ contractor relationship is one of mutual respect and support. Ascend’s General Manager Scotty Hall summed it up for us. “At this site we are all one team, no matter what hard hat you wear. I am proud to say we have a great relationship with the contractors on site, Turner being the largest one.” At Indorama IVXP, formerly BP Chemicals, another facility that Turner services, Indorama IVXP Maintenance Superintendent Terry Speight reiterated the idea. “Turner employees are exceptional to work with. If we encounter a problem, we work together to come up with solutions. It’s not a “we” and “them” situation, it is “us.” Turner employees also have an outstanding safety culture and take active roles in both our VPP and P.O.W.E.R. (Positive Observations With Excellent Results) programs,” Terry says. Turner Industries is proud to call Decatur home and honored to play a role in the region’s economic growth and community impact. This is where our Southeast footprint first landed and where we are committed to the future, ensuring both our clients’, and the region’s, success.
Regional sites that are part of Decatur operations include: Indorama IVXP in Decatur, Alabama - Site Manager Bradley Evans. Meet Three Employees Making a Difference Brian Alexander - Turner Civil Foreman at Ascend Performance Materials Brian Alexander has been at the Ascend site in Decatur for seven years. Shortly after Turner was awarded the maintenance contract in 2017, Brian transitioned over to Turner and was promoted to Foreman. When not at work, Brian is an active church member and organizer of the town’s “A Night to Shine,” a Tim Tebow Foundation project that allows special needs children of all ages to attend a prom, complete with gowns, tuxes, limos and dates.
“Brian is a great person, a valuable part of the Turner team and an asset to Ascend.” - Turner Site Manager Randy Alexander.
Ray Garner - Turner Civil Carpenter at Indorama IVXP Ray Garner has worked through multiple contractors at the Indorama IVXP site for 14 years. He has been with Turner since the inception of our site contract, four years ago. “Indorama is a great place to work and I love being part of the Turner team. They take care of us in a way that makes us feel valued. When Turner came in as the new maintenance contractor, we all got uniforms with our name on them. It’s a small thing but it makes such a difference, you get a sense of pride and belonging. It’s also easier to connect with your co-workers because you don’t forget anyone’s name!
Outside of work, Ray sings gospel with five of his seven brothers in a group aptly named “The Garner Brothers.”
Brex Jeffreys - Fabricator at Turner Industries’ Decatur Facility Brex Jeffreys started out as a helper in shipping and receiving nine years ago. Since that time he has worked his way up to fabrication, beginning with craft training in pipe fitting. He quickly caught on and today can expertly operate fabrication-related equipment such as the plasma table, plate roller, shear, press break, and forklifts. He has also excelled at his fitting and welding skills in vessel and structural steel fabrication.
“During his years with Turner, Brex has worked very hard to improve his skills. He also embraces Turner’s safety culture and we are proud to have him be a part of our Turner team.” -Turner Fabrication Operation Manager Kevin Cooper.
TEAM Turner Community Involvement Turner employees in the region, like their co-workers across the country, can be found supporting local community initiatives including: “Barrels of Love,” “Toys for Tots,” and participating in United Way’s “Day of Caring.”

Pensacola, Florida Multi-Service Facility Solidifying our commitment to our Southeast expansion, in early 2019 Turner Industries opened a new 12,500 square-foot facility in Pensacola, Florida. Turner has long had a presence in the Florida panhandle area, offering inspection services via Turner Specialty Services, and will now be able to offer small capital projects, pipe fabrication and SIPA as well as maintenance and equipment services. The multi-service facility sits on one acre in the Ellyson Field Industrial Park. “This is an exciting time for Turner Industries as we expand our southeastern footprint. This shop will be a base of operations for Turner to provide its services to clients in the Mobile and Pensacola area and beyond. As we continue to provide first-class maintenance to our current clients, we now have the ability to offer more services, providing one solution for our clients’ success,” said Turner Capital Projects Manager Matt McCollister.

HOW WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO DRIVE CLIENT SUCCESS
Pipe Estimating Software Takes Off Turner Industries’ Information Technology Department is currently working on a new web-based version of our proprietary pipe estimating software, formerly known as PIPS. The webbased application will provide a more precise and accurate way of estimating material and labor costs within the industry. Version one of the application introduces digital input of takeoffs, allowing for a faster and more efficient bid process, and is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2019. Soon the team will start working on version two, which will include a digital Isometric (ISO) viewer, complete with optical character recognition, alleviating the need for manual ISO drawing interpretation.
The development team, led by Product Owner Chelsea Smith and Scrum Master Jacques Steward, is using the latest and most secure web application platforms created by the engineering teams of Microsoft, allowing them to incrementally deliver a valuable estimating platform for our Pipe Fabrication Division. “I am confident that our development team can deliver an application that is in-line with, or even better than, other current heavy-industrial estimating software applications,” said Product Owner Chelsea Smith. “This product will allow Turner to maintain its competitive edge by managing centralized estimates, take-offs, and reports.”
The web-based application will provide a more precise and accurate way of estimating material and labor costs within the industry.

Bits & Bytes
The Future of JSA Completion and Compliance Is Here
I
n 2018, Turner Industries rolled out a pilot program allowing Job Safety Analyses ( JSAs) to be completed electronically on intrinsically safe tablets in the field. The benefits of completing JSAs electronically versus manually are many. First and foremost, the new approach improves safety through increased team interaction and knowledge retention. It also allows for greater accountability, better analytics, higher job efficiency, greater data integrity, and improved planning, procedure and communication abilities. As a result, we also see an increased time on tools and a reduction in overhead costs. The built-in artificial intelligence will allow us to retain institutional knowledge, automate procedures and learn from our mistakes. All JSAs completed will synchronize to a central location greatly enhancing the ability of the foreman to oversee crew efficiency and progress and enable immediate intervention should the need arise.

Don't Get Scammed - Keep Your Hard-Earned Money What to Look for to Avoid Gas Station Card Skimmers Over the last couple of years, experts have seen an increase in gas pump skimmers. Below are a few tips and tricks to help you avoid getting scammed and prevent someone from stealing your hard-earned money. • Be sure the gas pump panel is closed and does not appear tampered with. Look for the security seal. If the pump panel has been opened, the label will be broken or read “Void.” • Inspect the card reader. Does it look different from other readers at the station? Try to jiggle the card reader before inserting your card. If the reader moves out of place, report it to an attendant and use another pump. • Pay attention to the keyboard. Criminals can use a 3-D printer to create a new keyboard to put on top of the real one. The keyboard might look different from the rest of the ATM, or the keys could look bigger. • Utilize the fueling stations closest to the front of the gas station. SPRING 2019 25
