TURNER STRONG: SPECIAL EDITION

A Message from Our Leadership Roland M. Toups Executive Chairman

As COVID-19 precautions and actions continue to develop and be implemented, there is little doubt that substantial impacts and disruptions will continue to occur in our daily lives and business operations. In the spirit of unity, we will adapt together, addressing and overcoming this safety and health threat to our worksites and livelihoods. We have implemented a written, evolving safety plan for COVID-19 response as well as a Pandemic Business Continuity Plan. We believe these plans strike a balance between prevention of further contagion and keeping our nation’s critical manufacturing infrastructure operating and maintained.

Thomas H. Turner Chief Executive Officer

Stephen M. Toups

For the past six decades this company has worked hard toward having the safest workplace possible. The current situation is no different. Right now, we are actively monitoring the COVID-19 situation and following national, state and local guidelines. Our corporate health and safety department’s response protocol outlines the steps that will be taken to stem the spread of the virus. We would like to thank our employees for responding so quickly to keep our jobsites safe and virus free. Your efforts are not going unnoticed. We are looking at every measure possible to keep our employees safe while working. Taking temperature readings, adding crews to clean and disinfect, spreading out seating, working those remotely that can do so, and creating new shifts to limit the amount of people at sites are among some of the actions we have put into place. If you have a suggestion, please share it with your supervisor. We want to make sure you are as safe as you can be at a Turner Industries jobsite or facility.

President

This pandemic is worldwide in scope, and ever changing. Know that we are working to minimize the effects it may have on our fellow employees and their families but that the impact is cutting across every part of the company. We know that this is a tough time for everyone. We are working diligently to make sure we are ready to ramp up work when the time comes. These are unprecedented times. There was a start and there WILL be an end. Let’s trust in each other that we are working to get to the other side. Simply surviving is not an option…we will thrive once this is defeated.

THE LATEST SAFETY UPDATES FROM AROUND THE COMPANY

“The health and safety of our employees, our families and our customers remain, as always, our top priority. We have launched our safety response protocol which outlines the steps being taken to stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Our workforce has been instructed to practice social distancing, sanitizers have been distributed, and we have hired extra cleaning crews for deep cleaning and disinfecting. In the midst of the current situation, we still wanted to look back and recognize our employees’ recent safety achievements. Usually, in the spring issue of our Company Magazine you would see pictures from our corporate safety banquets. However, as with most other social gatherings, this year's banquets were canceled. This does not take away from the tremendous accomplishments by our workforce—a list of sites recognized can be found on page 11. Thank you all for your hard and safe work!”

Mike Phelps, Vice President of Health, Safety and Environmental

The following safety accomplishments and celebrations occurred before the pandemic. Therefore, you may see gatherings of large groups of people.

Fourth Annual 2019 CTE Instructor Safety Day Turner Industries sponsored the Fourth Annual 2019 CTE Instructor Safety Day in partnership with San Jacinto College and CMEF (Construction Maintenance Education Foundation). For the last four years, Turner has invited high school instructors who are teaching the NCCER curriculum in the Houston region to come for a day and receive industry safety training that then can be taken back to school and shared with career and technical education students. The event was held at San Jacinto College central campus. The main topic on this year’s agenda was Job Safety Analysis (JSA) training and hazard awareness training. The day also included a presentation on career pathways and an information session about being “Fit for Duty.” Sessions were conducted by Turner’s Houston Workforce Development personnel Jay Roberson, Carla Thompson, and Fabrication Safety Manager, Tim Johnson. Chris Loosemore, Regional Safety Manager for Turner Industries and Dr. Allatia Harris from San Jacinto College welcomed the instructors to the session. Dr. Harris also spoke to the instructors about dual credit craft training programs at the college and offered a tour of the new LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology campus (CPET).

WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB DONE RIGHT

A ‘Strong Foundation’ Kicks-off Multi-Phase Project at Ascend Chocolate Bayou

In October of 2019, the Turner Industries team at Ascend Performance Materials Chocolate Bayou, Texas operations formed a projects group to better serve the site. The first project the group is undertaking—replacing an existing 215' column—is a large, multiphase project involving Turner employees as well as the coordination of subcontractors. The new column will be located just to the east of the existing one, and Ascend plans on running the existing column until the new one has been set, the pipes connected and ready for tie-in. The primary goals of the project’s first phase, installing the foundation, were to finish safely, on time and under budget. As the groundwork spaces got tighter—a result of the new foundation near the existing column—the team performed the work with no recordables or safety incidents. The group’s trusted relationship with Ascend’s safety, operations, and management teams has been integral to Turner’s success.

Next up is steel work, preparing for the arrival of the column, and finally dressing out the column (which is 215 feet high and weighs 450,000 pounds). This ongoing project is just one of the many things Turner does at the Ascend Chocolate Bayou site. The team there also handles routine maintenance, turnaround planning and warehousing, scheduling, and janitorial services. “Turner’s projects group at Ascend Performance Materials is proud to have completed the foundation for the D3/D4 column that will be dressed out and erected later this year. The success of the project would not have been possible without valued support of the whole company. You may be assured of our continuing dedication with the purpose of achieving the best quality and performance,” said Turner Project Superintendent Leo Lopez.

Turner Industries Delivers ONE Solution at Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies in Orange, Texas Multiple Turner Industries divisions and groups worked together with Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies culminating in the completion of Honeywell’s Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Reduction Project at their Orange, Texas site. VOCs are compounds emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. The Honeywell VOC reduction project goal is to capture these emissions, reducing their presence in the environment. This schedule-driven project was a ‘ONE Solution’ Turner effort by maintenance, crane and rigging and Turner Specialty Services’ NonDestructive Examination group. Project scope included erecting over 180 tons of steel and equipment, including an 86’ tall prefabricated binary module complete with equipment and piping, pouring concrete, fabricating and installing piping, and building scaffolds. Turner’s specialized transportation group was also brought in during the project for the transportation of prefabricated modules from North Carolina to the jobsite in Orange, Texas. The project was an all-around success, meeting a strict six-month construction schedule. Turner employees worked 77,743 hours with zero safety incidents and recordables. The success of this project is a direct result of the ongoing alliance built between Turner and Honeywell.

COVID-19 CARE & TESTING With the effects of COVID-19 continuing to be felt around the world, please see information below from Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield which provides guidance on what to do if you show symptoms associated with the COVID-19 outbreak, including cough and fever. To encourage diligence and to help mitigate the spread of this virus, Turner Industries has waived copay requirements for employees and covered dependents that are tested for COVID-19 on the company health plans. Please note that while testing is starting to become more widely available in many locations, a doctor's order is required in order to be tested.

Where do I go if I think I have Coronavirus? First, don’t panic. Your symptoms could be allergies, common cold, or flu — but it’s best to be sure. You have a few different options for receiving care. If you’re showing symptoms, such as fever and cough, the safest place to be — for you and for everyone else — is in your home. So, here’s what you can do:

Contact your primary care physician They can help you get a Coronavirus test at the right location if they determine you need one — and prescribe medications as well. (No doctor? Visit an urgent care center — but call in advance to let them know you’re coming and why.)

Schedule a telemedicine appointment (see right for more information) This is a great way to avoid leaving home when you are ill and still receive medical assistance. Telemedicine clinicians can cover basic screening questions and help you decide the best next step. Prefer to stick with your network doctor? Many of them offer a telemedicine option, too. Contact them directly to find out.

In case of medical emergency, call 911 That means difficulty breathing or another emergency medical condition. Call the ER so they can prepare for your arrival and limit your exposure to others.

Telemedicine Social distancing has become the new norm with the COVID-19 outbreak. As such, we want to remind employees about the telemedicine benefit. Telemedicine gives you 24/7 access to board certified physicians for treatment of minor medical conditions over the phone or via video chat. This allows you to get the care that you need without visiting a public doctor’s office. The visit is FREE for those on Turner’s PPO Select and PPO Basic medical plans.

Using this benefit is as simple as 1-2-3 Download the AmWell or Doctor on Demand app from the app store, or visit their websites at www.amwell.com or www.doctorondemand.com.

Register and create a patient profile. See a doctor immediately or schedule an appointment. Please note, if you are seeking mental health counseling via the telemedicine benefit, you should select the AmWell option above.
