It’s officially spring! This time of year is often used as a metaphor for new beginnings, renewal, and growth. With that thought in mind, we’ve highlighted Turner Industries’ SIPA group, a group that has grown significantly over the past couple of years. With scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement as SIPA’s four main service lines, SIPA is Turner Industries’ own “Fantastic Four,” a team that continues to perform soft craft services successfully and safely.

Going back to what spring means, it’s also a symbol of shedding the old and embracing the new. After overcoming the challenges posed by COVID-19, Turner is continuing to move forward and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead. Thanks to all of Turner’s employees who helped make this first quarter of 2023 such a success!

The crew, tasked with replacing a pump spool on two separate pumps, requested a permit to proceed with the work. While walking the job down with the unit operator, checking isolation and zero energy, the crew asked the operator if the pumps were locked out. The operator stated that both pumps were racked out and locked the night before. The crew asked if he would push the start button just to make sure. When the operator pressed the start button, the pump started then moved to the second pump, which also started. The job walk was stopped, and the operator notified his supervisor. Work resumed after both pumps were racked out and another job walk was completed.

Turner Industries Receives No. 1 Ranking on ABC’s 2023 Top Performers List

Turner Industries has once again been ranked No.1 on Associated Builders and Contractors’ Top Performers list, which ranks its contractor members that build the country’s most enduring, innovative, and high-quality construction projects, based on work hours.

“Earning the No. 1 rank on ABC’s 2023 Top Performers list is a true honor,” said Turner Industries CEO Stephen Toups. “Our employees deserve all the credit because they are the ones who go to work every day with a ‘top performer’ mindset. We are privileged to be on this list with the best of the best in our industry as we work toward the same goal. As ABC’s top performers, we must continue to develop our current workforce, build the workforce of tomorrow, contribute to the communities where we operate, and—above all—work safely.”

What It Takes to Get the Job Done Right

Turner Industries Completes Utility Excavation Work for OQ Chemicals

At OQ Chemicals’ manufacturing site in Bay City, Texas, Turner Industries’ civil construction group recently completed a complex utility excavation project. OQ needed to expand its raw water system on site due to an increase in chemical production, and the “Raw Water Project” involved the installation of a new 24-inch high-density polyethylene (HDPE) raw water distribution line from the site’s reservoir to a header on the opposite side of the Utilities Water Treater Unit.

The installation of the new underground piping was designed to include deep open cut excavations, which Turner was able to successfully eliminate via detailed planning and coordination with OQ’s operations team. Turner and OQ collaborated to develop a creative solution to a risk caused by the existing silt in the reservoir threatening to inundate the new raw water

line once the temporary sheet piles were pulled. The solution involved underwater diving activities inside the reservoir to remove some of the top parts of the sheet piling installed by Turner to create a stilling well to hold back the silt.

It took Turner a little over three months to complete the work, and Ed Walker served as the project manager. Walker and his team—with more than 100 years of combined industry experience—completed the project safely, on schedule, and under budget.

According to Walker, the cornerstone of this project’s success was the civil group’s “112% mentality.” Each employee is expected to give 112% every day, and the team displays its 112% hard hat stickers with pride. Having this mindset to always go above and beyond is a main reason why Turner’s civil group continues to successfully execute projects throughout the Gulf South region.

“Turner has been invited back by OQ to perform more construction work in Bay City, which is further proof of their commitment to client satisfaction,” Walker said. “When a customer invites you back to perform more work, that’s when you know you did a good job.”

Turner Industries Providing ONE Solution Service Model for Freeport LNG

With its ONE Solution ™ service model, Turner Industries is quickly becoming a premier provider of post-construction services and small capital work for the LNG marketplace in Texas. A recent example of Turner’s success in the LNG sector has been its work for Freeport LNG, which began last year.

In August 2022, Turner began working on Freeport LNG’s “T1 Snuff Line,” replacing 600 feet of 2-inch pipe on a storage tank. Shortly after this, Turner started conducting mechanical work while utilizing five of its service lines: Rope Access; Scaffolding, Insulation, Painting, and Abatement (SIPA); Pipe Fabrication; Equipment, Rigging, and Specialized Transportation; and Shutdowns, Turnarounds, and Outages.

“We can provide Freeport LNG a turnkey portfolio of services for their maintenance and small project needs,” said Bobby Pollard Jr., project superintendent for Turner Industries. “This allows us to have a single contact on-site for multiple service lines, which clients value. At Freeport LNG, we’re completing our work on time, safely, and building working relationships.”

Since its initial work in mid-2022, Turner has remained active at Freeport LNG and is now performing additional services including hydro excavation, civil, and valve detensioning.

“We value Turner’s ability to support our operations with a wide range of services delivered in a cooperative, timely, and safe manner,” said Mark Mallett, chief operating officer for Freeport LNG.

Rope Access Team Stands by During Freeze

In late December 2022, Turner Specialty Services’ mechanical rope access team was called upon to stand by at S.E. Tylose in Plaquemine due to anticipated freezing temperatures. The goal was to rapidly repair any leaks and minimize operational downtime while safeguarding over 330 feet of critical plant process lines.

The client chose rope access services over traditional scaffolding, enabling work at various angles without the need for multiple scaffolds. This approach proved more cost-effective and time-efficient, eliminating delays caused by scaffold erection.

Plant Engineer Nick Juneau praised Turner ’s rope access team, stating, “ They took the time to comprehend the work scope during the planning process and successfully executed the job by meticulously preparing for every possible rigging aspect. The job was better performed through rope access than with traditional methods. We will keep Turner Specialty Services in mind for future work opportunities.”

Turner Rope Access Operations Manager Nathon Williams highlighted the team’s efficiency and safety, saying, “Our rope access teams safely rigged over 30 pipe sections for gasket repairs, pulling blinds and wrapping leaking sections of piping. The time saved through quick, safe access to the affected areas saved the plant days of downtime.”

The project was completed under budget, showcasing Turner ’s innovative work methods as an effective alternative to traditional scaffolding for certain applications. This value-added approach has solidified Turner's reputation as a leader among service providers.

Emergency Job Tackled by Rope Access Team

Turner ’s rope access group swiftly tackled an emergency job for the Louisiana Department of Transportation (DOT) at the Belle Chasse Bridge in south Louisiana. Tasked with inspecting the bridge’s drive shaft gears and associated hardware, the team expertly navigated underneath the structure, discovering two broken drive shaft couplings.

The rope access group promptly removed and replaced the couplings, while also addressing additional work requests. Turner Rope Access Operations Manager Nathon Williams proudly reported, “Our client was extremely satisfied with the work quality and response time. The job was completed incident-free, ahead of schedule, and saved the client over $45,000. This crucial intervention got the bridge back up and running, ensuring the smooth passage of marine cargo.”

Solugen Awards Turner Industries with Nested Maintenance Contract

Solugen specializes in the production of sustainable chemicals using bio-based manufacturing methods, and its proprietary technology platform combines biology and chemistry to produce high-performance chemicals from plant sugars. In 2021, Solugen opened the world’s first carbon-negative molecule factory in Houston, and Turner Industries started working at the site last year.

Turner’s first work for Solugen in Houston included a small civil project, which involved demoing a concrete wall and building a concrete support base for new pumps being added to the site. Solugen was so pleased with Turner’s performance on the project that they awarded Turner a nested maintenance contract.

“In December 2022, our nested maintenance contract with Solugen began. Since then, we’ve supported the site with crane and rigging during its outage, and provided scaffolding, insulation, painting, hydro blasting, and tank inspection services,” said Esteban Cavazos, site superintendent for Turner Industries.

Turner is also assisting Solugen with its safety efforts. With the site only being a couple years old, Turner and Solugen are working together to build and maintain a culture of safety excellence.

“We’ve brought our safety best practices to the site such as lockout tagout , confined space entry, job safety analysis, etc.,” said Gregory Stephens, operations manager for Turner Industries. “Since day one, Solugen has embraced our safety best practices, and we’ll continue to provide our expertise to help ensure the safety of each employee.”

Solugen’s products are bio-based alternatives to petroleum-derived chemicals used in the production of consumer goods such as cosmetics, water treatment, agriculture, and plastics. Turner supports Solugen's mission of creating a cleaner, more sustainable future by providing the industry with affordable, high-quality bio-based chemicals.

“The relationship between Turner and Solugen is off to a great start,” Stephens said. “As this site continues to grow, we’re excited to see what the future has in store.”

Turner Industries Successfully Replaces 127,092 Pound Tank

Turner Industries ’ equipment and rigging group was able to safely replace a 127,092-pound tank for a client in the Houston area, despite the challenge of limited crane access from one side and a railcar loading dock located only 36 feet away. The team, led by veteran operator and assembly director Tracy Johnson, spent several months meticulously planning and laying out the TC-4000 crane to identify the only spot that would allow a safe lift of the tank and allow for the 800-ton crane with an outrigger spread of 63 feet.

In January of 2023, the Turner team assembled the TC-4000 according to plan, which had two of the outriggers located underneath a live pipe rack, within inches of two support columns, and the tail swing of the crane in spots having clearances of less than 3 inches.

The project also involved removing overhead obstructions and completing lift plans, but the team was able to assemble the crane ahead of schedule and complete the tank replacement on time with zero incidents.

Turner employee Tracy Johnson was hospitalized after planning the project, and we ask that you keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Tracy ethic and expertise in the crane and rigging industry are an integral part of Turner's commitment to providing safe and effective solutions for our clients.

HARNESSING THE POWER OF SOFT CRAFTS FOR UNRIVALED RESULTS!

OUR MISSION at Turner Industries is to help our clients become more successful, and we understand each client’s goal of achieving operational and reliability excellence. Our ONE Solution™ approach makes Turner one of the only true full-service contractors in the nation. From construction to facility management, most services require skilled craft. There is, however, a large portion of heavy industrial work that perhaps does not get as much attention as it should—soft crafts. Soft craft services are crucial for any facility, and it might be fair to say that soft craft employees are some of the unsung heroes of our industry.

In this cover story, you will learn how Turner is providing safe, cost-effective, and productive soft craft services to our clients while also seamlessly integrating these services into existing site activities. Our scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement (SIPA) group has the experience and knowledge to tackle the most complex jobs.

Turner makes SIPA services simple, and we’re going to show you how!

TURNER INDUSTRIES Company Magazine 18 SPRING 2023

HISTORY

The SIPA group’s story begins in the 1960s when Turner-owned operating companies— including Nichols Construction, Harmony Corp., and National and International Maintenance—started offering scaffolding, insulation, and painting services. In 198 9, Turner formed the first designated scaffolding company, known as SCAFCO, to provide an equipment-only scaffold rental option. With the formation of SCAFCO, Turner transitioned from frame-type scaffolding to a ring-lock scaffolding system.

Turner continued to offer scaffolding, insulation, and painting services throughout the 1990s, adding specialty services along the way—including abatement in 1993. In 2005, Turner consolidated into one entity—

Turner Industries Group—allowing us to offer a single-solution approach to our clients.

In 2012, Turner recognized the need to further consolidate services to ensure the delivery of productive and cost-effective solutions to clients. This led to the formation of the scaffolding, insulation, painting, and abatement (SIPA) group.

“Offering our SIPA services in this consolidated fashion makes sense for us and for our clients,” said SIPA Vice President Kelly Cortez. “We are making things easier, while delivering maximum efficiency at the same time. With over $100 million in scaffolding inventory, we have solidified ourselves as one of the leading soft craft providers in our industry.”

TURNER’S SIPA GROUP INSTALLS 4,368,000 LINEAR FEET OF INSULATION EACH YEAR. THAT'S ROUGHLY THE DISTANCE FROM HOUSTON, TEXAS TO JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.

TURNER INDUSTRIES Company Magazine 20 SPRING 2023

The SIPA group is committed to the highest standard of health, safety, and environmental management practices in all aspects of the business. Even though the group has experienced significant growth over the past couple years, the safety record has remained stellar. In 2022, the SIPA group worked 6.6 million hours with a TRIR of 0.14.

“ Even though we have grown tremendously over the last couple of years, our unwavering and strong safety culture remains at the forefront of our business, and our employees are committed to safety excellence. SIPA employees are usually the first ones in and last ones out during a turnaround project. The complexity of soft crafts work, day in and day out, requires first-class employees, and their hard and safe work does not go unnoticed,” said SIPA Safety Eastern Manager Ryan Espey.

The nature of SIPA work can be fluid, moving from project to project and sometimes from site to site. To enhance

TRAINING

communication and ensure safety regulations and best practices are utilized consistently, in addition to our SIPA supervisor handbook, a Turner-specific SIPA reference guide has been developed by the safety department. The guide integrates the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental management practices with task-specific examples.

Turner Tablet Applications™, such as electronic JSAs, increase efficiency , and visually represented safety dashboards give supervisors and clients an instant, ata-glance overview. The dashboard can show a representation of the group or be broken down by region or site. This allows the SIPA group to monitor trends, be proactive, look at leading indicators, and determine what areas need attention and the kind of attention required (e.g., auditing,

As with any craft, training is essential. The more performing the craft, the safer the task can be completed. In 2019, Turner Industries partnered with the Scaffold Training Institute—a worldwide leader in providing scaffold training programs—to develop a custom inhouse training program for our SIPA group.

“This was a vital first step in really customizing our training to deliver the maximum benefit to our employees. The Competent Person Scaffolding Training was a big step in our efforts to educate our employees in the field. Over the years, we have further developed and added on to our training programs to include procedure training and leadership training,” said SIPA Training Manager Oscar Escoto.

And, of course, the more knowledge being shared the better, so the SIPA group has also developed a continuous training program that consists of hands-on, visual training held on a regular basis.

TECHNOLOGY – DECIDE WITH DATA®

A main focus of Turner today is continuing to digitize the data generated by our employees and at our clients’ jobsites to make data-driven decisions that reduce costs, save time and improve safety metrics. To complement this effort, Turner’s SIPA group is utilizing Turner Tablet Applications™ to digitize and automate paper-based forms and tasks, while also creating even more efficiencies for clients. These applications include digital JSAs, Foreman’s Progress, electronic timesheets, and Turner’s Scaffold Tracking App, a proprietary location-tracking program used to make data-driven scaffolding decisions.

TURNER’S SCAFFOLD TRACKING APP –ONE SIMPLE SOLUTION WITH FOUR EASY STEPS:

SCAN

Scan a barcode to capture the scaffold’s location, and start building.

INPUT

Input the scaffold’s pieces, the work order, and other relevant data.

PROCESS

Process the data in Turner ’s ERP system for automated billing.

Analyze the data via interactive dashboards. For quality control, an audit can be performed after the scaffold is assembled.

Paper Tickets

Manual Data Entry

Complex Billing Uncertainty

Heavy industrial work is complex, so we’re using the power of mobile technology to make scaffold tracking simple:

• Request new material

• Locate every scaffold on your site

• Track real-time cost

“Turner’s SIPA group is fully utilizing the Turner Tablet Scaffold Tracking App and online request forms to help save our clients time and money,” said SIPA Vice President Kelly Cortez. “In a highly competitive scaffold market where technology advancements are few and far between, our scaffold app has been a differentiator. Going forward, we plan to create a Spanish version of the app and update it to include offline capabilities, which will allow sites with limited connectivity to utilize the tablet-based scaffold app.”

3D PLANNING AND MODELING

When it comes to planning and modeling, the SIPA group also utilizes a scaffold design program, which makes the design process quick and easy. The program produces an instant and accurate material list, features a drag and design interface, and offers built-in VR technology.

MEET SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP TURNER’S SIPA GROUP

Oscar Escoto

SIPA Safety & Training Coordinator

Years with Turner Industries: 4

Do you have a favorite moment during your time at Turner?

After I provided a training session at a refinery, two employees came up to me and said, “Oscar, that was one of the best classes we’ve ever taken. You really spoke to us.” My gift is to speak to people, and I enjoy being able to have an impact on hundreds of Turner employees every year.

What makes Turner’s industry and equipment- specific training unique?

We have merged Turner’s policy and procedures and the Scaffold Training Institute’s training program together to develop our own Competent Person Scaffolding Training. This is unique and different than other contractors because they usually have to send their employees to a third party for training. Turner can administer this all-in-one training and deem our employees competent, which helps with the quality of our scaffolds.

Butch Knight

SIPA Project Manager

Years with Turner Industries: 41

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen during your time in the industry?

With scaffolding, you’ve seen the material go from tube and clamp to several different types of scaffold systems—and the accessories that go along with each type. Through the years, this has cut labor costs for clients. The digital age of record-keeping in the field is also here, and clients want more consolidation when it comes to soft craft services. For example, they want scaffolding, insulation, and painting services all grouped together.

As a long-time veteran of the industry, what advice would you give to a new Turner employee?

Be patient. Good things happen to those who are patient.

Hayden Moore

SIPA Manager for the Western Area

Years with Turner Industries: 5

What sets Turner’s soft craft services apart from the competition?

Plain and simple, it’s the Turner Tablet Applications. Others use tablets, but their applications aren’t as robust as Turner’s, and we are constantly improving our applications.

How does the SIPA group ensure it has enough labor to perform its work?

We have a long list of employees who have performed exemplary work for us in the past that we can call in a moment’s notice. This allows us to staff jobs even in emergency situations. For example, back in 2021, Dow called us after the winter freeze and requested more than 500 SIPA employees. Within 48 hours, we were able to identify and hire all of the necessary personnel to respond to Dow’s needs.

Judy Mendoza

SIPA Project Manager

Years with Turner Industries: 9

What is your favorite part about working for Turner’s SIPA group?

After working for Turner for nine years—seven of them being with the SIPA group, it’s been amazing to see how much the SIPA group has grown since it was formed. I believe we’re just getting started, and this growth will only continue.

How is SIPA utilizing a craft-specific Job Safety Analysis (JSA) to improve its safety performance?

The craft-specific JSA is a great tool because it’s tailored to the work task: scaffolding, insulation, painting, or abatement. It allows the employee to look at every aspect of his or her job so it can be completed successfully and— more importantly—safely.
