Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? I give massive thanks to Charlie Green who is now in New York for the break she gave me all those years ago in 1990 when she let me work with her on Celine Dion‌ and then of course there is the endless inspirational chat and banter with Terry Barber of MAC notoriety. Special note to Sam Chapman who let me draw on her face many times and Sharon Dowsett who showed me how to create a sense of feeling with make up not always cling to precision.

Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. The day an unknown make-up artist ran across an Alexander McQueen ‘Razorshell’ dress laid across the floor backstage to retouch powder before realising they had just destroyed an invaluable catwalk dress due on a runway in 15 minutes. Make-up created by Alex Box, Illamasqua Creative Director Photo by Ian Crawford
The dress had taken weeks to craft and powder takes 10 seconds. Oops! He’s still out there in the industry and no, it wasnt me! Do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? It’s much less tolerant of offering

Sharing savvy tips that range from reworking office wear for the evening to beauty news, healthy recipes and even gift ideas, Ruth Crilly demystifies what models do when they have a spot
the day throws at you. [ TWO] How long have you been modelling? [Ruth] I started modelling in my second year of law school. I was on my lunch break and saw a Models1 model competition in “Show people what makes Topshop. All you had to you special and don’t do was drop a form with be afraid to stand out a polaroid of yourself into from the crowd. You have a box, which I did, then to be prepared, though, totally forgot about it! Quite for a lot of stupid a while afterwards, Models1 comments about whatever got in touch to ask me makes you different.” down to London and that’s where it all started. I was or bad hair day. It’s not every 20 at the time, almost 21, morning that an army of which is pretty late for hair & make-up artists and a model to start, but I looked stylists are at hand but with very young! her website and YT channel, A Model Recommends, Ruth delivers a ton of handy how-to’s that tackle whatever

What would be your one tip for someone wanting to start their own YT channel? Do something different and don’t try to follow the herd. Everyone’s unique and that’s what makes the world amazing. Show people what makes you special and don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. You have to be prepared, though, for a lot of stupid comments about whatever makes you different. People with no imagination or foresight can’t stand people who are different, so you’ll need to

develop a thick skin! (See next question...) We can’t not ask about the gorgeous gap in your teeth… Were you ever ‘advised’ by anyone to have it ‘fixed’ early on in your career? Surprisingly, no. The fashion industry loves quirks and odd characteristics and so the gap in my teeth worked out fantastically well for me. Of course there were the bigger commercial clients and catalogues who found it too strong a look, but many of those just retouch anyway, so I don’t feel as though I’ve been at any particular disadvantage. I know that I’ve won a lot of campaigns by looking a bit different that I wouldn’t have otherwise got!

It was said to be the first of its kind and enabled women to “define beauty on their own terms”. Aside from her ventures in beauty, Iman also has two successful fashion businesses. Iman Global Chic, a top selling fashion accessories line sold exclusively on the Home Shopping Network, and Iman Home, an exotic selection of home furnishings. Her 2001 autobiography I Am Iman was released in 2001 and she currently

Iman has changed the way that the beauty industry views and caters for multi cultural women. “The creation of my cosmetics and its philosophy has always been a political statement”. It’s really no wonder that in June she was honoured with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award.
