When did you decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? The point that I decided that I really wanted to become a make-up artist specialising in fashion and beauty was at LFW September 2000 backstage at an Alexander McQueen Show SS01 (the one with a Rubenesque model reclining and breathing through a tube in a cube that was lit up and became a padded cell with all the supermodels) I saw the key make-up artist talking to the team. I had my eureka moment and thought to myself

Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? They are totally different animals! I love the collaborative experience of the shows from seeing what the designer, stylist and team have worked on and have in mind to working with my assistants and make-up sponsor, hair stylists and manicurists. It’s a theatrical adrenalin-fuelled, sleepdeprived, creative and social time that lasts across an entire month in 4 different countries and I find it utterly magical. Editorial work in studios or locations is a special relationship between the photographer, stylist, model and glam

The way to do it is use a finger to pat it on the lid and the rather un-technical term that I like is wait for it all to ‘smush’ together! I go easy on the carbs in the evenings, I try to avoid sugar (but I like a little chocolate and red wine!) I try to eat lots of fresh veggies and salad. My fave thing is fresh juices and smoothies. Helmut Newton inspired look below, Liz’s product of the month rgio Armani Lip Maestro

I

t’s been a marathon of video and editorial shoots this month and what

was trending over and over was red lips!!! Can’t get enough of them at the moment. I did a shoot for a new band called Lizzie And The Yes Men. The gorgeous Lizzie wanted three very strong looks and one of them was inspired by Helmut Newton – very powerful and strong. I’m always on the look out for the perfect red and new textures. Lucky for me Giorgio Armani has just launched Lip Maestro. This is my product of the month the colour is super vibrant with a lush velvet texture. It’s the perfect matte and does not budge, no bleeding or feathering and I hardly needed to touch up throughout the day. In a myriad of gorgeous colours this is just perfect for the party season… you won’t be reapplying all night with this baby!!! On a shoot for a jewellery campaign that I did this month, the brief was to keep the model looking sculpted and tonal. We didn’t want the make-up to distract from W W W .T WO -- M AGA ZI N E. CO M

the jewellery so I used a lot of mushroomy and taupey tones. My absolute all-time favourite colour for contouring was MAC’s taupe. It’s now discontinued (thankfully I stockpiled a few) but my new favourite is Chanel’s Ombre Contraste Sculpting Veil for eyes and cheeks in Notorious. It has a little sheen to it so as you build up the colour it doesn’t look flat. Another favourite is Tom Ford’s Shade & Illuminate. I can’t get enough of this product, it gives the skin a gorgeous sheen without it looking

like shimmer. I tend to use fan brushes when doing a contour as I find I don’t get that stripey effect and can control the colour better. Shu Uemura’s Badger 7.5EX is my favourite. I have ten in my kit – that’s how much I love them! I have worked with the beautiful and effervescent Dannii Minogue since the early noughties and had the pleasure of working with her again this month for a tv

appearance. She is such a product queen and really knows her stuff. She brought with her Model Co fibre lash mascara to show me – its bascially false lashes in a tube. I was a little bit skeptical as I’ve tried a lot of fibre mascaras in the past and they always seem to make the lashes clump and look askew. Well, this mascara is a revelation. It gives beautiful full thick lashes with plenty of lift. I added a few individual lashes from my own range for extra glamour. Needless to say she didn’t get it back!!! Another product Dannii introduced me to, and I was completely blown away with, was a pressed powder from a company called Latonas. It’s called Invisible Blotting Powder and OMG it’s so finely milled it doesn’t read at all on the face. You can literally keep applying this all day and it will never cake! It is the perfect product for male grooming too. It’s designed by Australian make-up artists Abigail

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins was born in Tottenham, north London and quickly developed a passion for music. At the age of 15 she discovered a collection of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald records at a local junk shop. “When I listened to the Ettas and the Ellas, it sounds so cheesy, but it was like an awakening. I was like, oh, right, some people have proper longevity and are legends”. In 2006, Adele’s three track demo for a school project was posted on social media site Myspace. Independent label XL Recordings offered her a contract “I never, ever thought I’d get signed. The A&R guy emailed me and I was ignoring it… I didn’t realise they (XL) did all these amazing names…”. Her debut album, 19 was a success and received two Grammy Awards. Her second album, 21, broke records around the globe. It also brought Adele more awards, including a further six Grammys. Having conquered the world Adele announced that she and partner Simon Konecki were expecting a baby and their son was born in October 2012. Adele’s epic voice and heart-felt lyrics have established her as one of the most success musicians in the world. Her look is also one of the most distinctive. Whether it’s a 60s beehive or soulful curls, she is never seen without her statement lashes and of course those fabulous cheekbones. We love her voice and we love her style. Did you ever look up to or aspire to be like any other hair stylist? I was always a Vidal Sassoon fan. I was amazed at how he revolutionised the world of hairdressing in a way that will probably never happen again. Well, not in my lifetime anyway. Who or what has been the biggest influence on your career? Many things and people have had influences on my career. Miriam Glynn, the stylist who first trained me, was always a huge encouragement and also inspired me to move to London. Glynn sadly died of cancer. Stuart, who W W W .T WO -- M AGA ZI N E. CO M

also trained me, was a great influence (I don’t remember his last name). My other huge influence was the late photographer Corinne Day, who gave me my break into the fashion industry. She taught me what to look for in a picture and taught me about the small attentions to detail. Do you think hair and make-up influence each other regarding trends or are quite diverse of one another? It really depends. Sometimes they influence each other, then other times when they juxtapose each other that can work well too. Either way they have to

What inspired you to get into make-up and did you immediately know that’s what you wanted to do? I completely fell into make-up – it wasn’t what I planned to do at all. I studied fashion at St. Martin’s College of Art. As students, once we’d designed and made garments, we’d have them photographed on a model so that we could include them in our portfolios. I started to make my models up the way I wanted them to look in my photos and before long other students were asking me to do the same for them. I took to make-up pretty immediately and I liked it for the same reasons that I’d wanted to study fashion in the first place – I could make people look how I wanted them to – but I loved

What’s the best bit of advice a fellow professional has ever given you? I remember once, years ago, finishing a model’s make-up at a Versace show where I was assisting Pat, and her saying “That’s great – but make it more.” It really stuck with me. She didn’t mean more make-up, she meant make the ‘idea,’ the ‘statement,’ the ‘gesture’ of the make-up, more. Often I get to the point where I’m happy with a model’s make-up as I’m looking at her face, but once it enters into the magical two-dimensional world of a photograph, it becomes ‘normalised’ and less remarkable, so

Just reading about Jeff Vespa is exhausting. ‘Celebrity photographer’ is probably what Jeff is best known as but this merely scratches the surface. Like other high-profile photographers such as Rankin, Jeff seems to fearlessly switch between different creative disciplines with great success JEFF VESPA PHOTOGRAPHS ASHLEY BENSON AT THE 2012 TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL PHOTO CHARLES LEONIO/ GETTY IMAGES

nogging Penny Pingleton whilst appearing as a character actor in the movie Hairspray at the age of 16 is surely a sign that you’re not destined to lead an ordinary life in Baltimore. Creativity was obviously coursing through Jeff’s veins and he was an active member of the local graffiti scene. Born Jeff Meyer, Vespa was his grafitti tag and the name stuck. Jeff eventually made his way to LA where he studied at the American Film Institute. An interest in photography saw 15 yearold Jeff borrow his Mother’s camera to document his friends, but it was years later that Jeff’s first proper assignment came after seeing an online ad that was ‘Looking for a photographer for red carpet events.’ He was sent out hours after calling and armed only with a 50mm lens managed to land some solid images of the Bulworth premiere that starred Warren Beatty. The agency was so impressed that they hired him. From then on, Jeff’s celebrity portfolio grew and he would eventually set up his

own online photo agency. WireImage would follow a couple of years later with the involvement of eight other partners. Jeff is credited with being the founder of the image library grid system that would become the industry standard. In 2007, the founding partners sold WireImage (Media Vast) to Getty Images for $207m. Jeff has spent more than a decade as a photography powerhouse. The official photographer of the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, celebrity book collaborations and a stint as the Editor-at-Large of LIFE.com up until earlier this year. Do you ever feel there’s a time when the page is turned and you have to move on and try something new and challenging? “I am always challenging myself, every project I do is self generated. No one is telling me what to do, so every morning when I wake up it is a challenge to figure out what I am going to do next.” Jeff has professed a love of filmmaking and in 2008 wrote, produced and directed ZHAN G Z IYI W W W .T WO -- M AGA ZI N E. Do you see the content being more film driven given that you find this so creatively satisfying? “Verge is the place that I can feel like one person, instead of a photographer on one side and a filmmaker on the other. It allows me not to have to explain to people what I do. It is really satisfying to be shooting and directing every week.”

CELEBRITY M AKE-UP ARTIST, RACHEL WOOD TELLS US ABOUT THE CLOSE FREINDSHIPS THAT CAN DEVELOP BETWEEN THE TALENT AND MUA It warmed my heart watching Meryl Streep give her Best Actress (for The Iron Lady) speech at the the 2012 Oscars, dedicating it to her make-up artist Roy Helland. Helland also won an Oscar for his make-up in The Iron Lady. The two have worked so closely for so many years and there’s an amazing bond between them. An MUA’s attitude, personality and the way they get along with the talent can impact a career as much as their artistic skill. If a job involves long days of filming or travelling, people want someone who not only makes them look and feel good but someone they are comfortable to be around too. 112
