When did you decide to become a makeup artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I grew up in a pretty small town, without much access to anything fashion besides a tv show hosted by Jeanne Beker called Fashion Television, and a couple of the major magazines like Elle, Allure and Vogue. I remember being fascinated with fashion and the high gloss glamour that came with it. I started to buy mens fashion magazines and then started to buy the womens magazines too. I just wanted to know all I could. I didn’t think about becoming a make-up artist first, I thought about being a designer or stylist. At the time Elle had really great beauty pages and I, of course, read every issue cover to cover. I noticed myself re-reading the beauty pages and being fascinated with the products featured. I saw a feature around that time about Kevyn Aucoin’s second book Making Faces coming out. I made a special trip to the nearest city to buy it and immediately started teaching myself how to do everything in the book.

Are you self taught or did you train somewhere? I used Kevyn’s book as a guide, and any willing participant I could find to paint on. I used money from my part-time jobs to buy products and somehow weaseled my way into a MAC pro discount which actually pretty much turned me into a professional. I used to order every single collection MAC ever came out with. I would pre-order it, so I’d have it the day it was released. At that time MAC was only releasing maybe six launches a year, so it was always really exciting to get something new to play with and really get into the idea behind the collection. What’s your make-up style? I like to think of myself as fairly versatile, however, KRISTEN STEWART

when one works as much with celebrity as I do, you can’t be too out of the box without freaking out clients and the general public. Your innovations have to be much subtler which I think, at times, teaches me things. I would like to think that my clients feel like the most sophisticated version of sexy in my make-up. I love beautiful skin, clean full lashes, contoured and shaped faces, diffused colour on the eyes, or razor sharp lips. I try to always take my clients to a place of high fashion cool, and I do make-up on them that’s fashion forward but still aspirational. Who or what inspires you? So many things! Mostly the woman I’m working with. I think it’s so important to take cues from your client and to pay attention to all the things they tell you, but

also everything they don’t. Observation can teach you so much about how a client lives and how she wants to project herself to the world. You know when a woman puts on a dress and the dress just wears her? Make-up can absolutely be the same way. You have to bring out something from within your client, you cannot just project whatever it is you want to be there if it’s not there. You have to build the fantasy with them so that they own it and the fantasy then becomes reality. Makeup isn’t just make-up, it’s feelings, moments and fantasy that we provide. Do you prefer working backstage at shows, on location shoots or red carpet events? I love doing it all. I rarely get a chance these days to work backstage at shows, but I think it is a really W W W .T WO -- M AGA ZI N E. CO M

great environment to learn in, and though I am fairly successful, I am ALWAYS interested and most fulfilled when learning something new. I find huge inspiration in other make-up artists and the techniques they use, which is why people like the Pixiwoo sisters, Sam and Nic, and other video blogs are so amazing. I didn’t have access to that when starting out, but there’s so much information online now, and I can’t even imagine how that will shape the careers of the next generation.

concealer is a really good tool to have handy!

Your top five products? 1. L’Oreal Carbon Black Voluminous Mascara, is my absolute go-to mascara. I love how black it is and it just works for me. 2. Shu Uemura Lash Curler (but it’s everyone’s favourite isn’t it?) 3. Tom Ford Blush in Savage is a really unique color, sort of a rosy bronze. I don’t use it on everyone, but for those with NC30 or darker skin tones it’s my go-to 4. NARS Laguna Bronzing powder works for almost everyone and is more Which one product would brown then red which you advise someone to makes me happy. never leave home without? 5. Suqqu translucent powder I think that’s so dependent in Natural is the perfect on how one feels about setting powder. Its superfine themselves, but I think texture sets make-up and generally that a great never looks powdery. 18

Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? Well without knowing him at all Kevyn Aucoin has. But as far as personal connections, Jay Manuel gave me a really great break in my career and introduced me to Iman who has been a friend ever since. Recently I was in Paris and met Lloyd Simmonds, the creative director of YSL cosmetics, who is without doubt the most talented make-up artist I have ever had the pleasure of watching work. He and I just clicked and spent most every day while I was there together. I accompanied him on jobs with Karl Lagerfeld and Miles Aldridge and a bunch of Couture shows, and he is so generous with his knowledge, his technique and his humour. Being able to watch him do make-up re-inspired and motivated me, and I learned so many little tricks from him. He’s a true genius and a very special friend. If you are reading this Lloyd, I miss you and I’ll see you soon! Do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? Absolutely it has. Social Media, the level 20

of celebrity hysteria and obsession, the product technology and assortment, the availability of product and also knowledge and education for the consumer to use that product, and the influence of bloggers and media have all been amplified and created an entirely new environment for beauty and the industry. There are so many more opportunities in beauty today, but also it’s a lot tougher to compete. Everyone wants to do what we do now.

I know, but working with some of the most beautiful women in the world has shown me without a shadow of a doubt that it is often the charisma they carry with them that makes them beautiful, combined with their natural looks. A perfect example? Iman. She is without doubt the coolest, funniest, most intelligent woman I have ever met. She is gracious, kind, hysterically funny, and staggeringly beautiful and not just physically. She’s magnetic. I have never seen that kind of Define beauty for you. charisma in anyone else, Beauty for me is both inside when she is in the room and out. The most beautiful everyone turns to look at people can quickly become her without even knowing ugly because of the way who she is right away. they interact with people and with themselves. Red carpet events are one of the few occasions where an actor’s make-up, hair and clothing is under more scrutiny than their craft. Do you, in turn, feel under pressure as if your work is being more fiercely critiqued when your clients are walking the carpet? Of course! My job becomes not only to please my client, but also to please the press, the critics, and the fans! I can’t rely on Photoshop, I can’t rely on good lighting even. It’s hard flash straight from the camera, and these girls have to look turned out. Celebrities are not models. They are beautiful talented women, but they usually aren’t teenagers with flawless skin and ridiculous bone structure, so red carpet makeup is a true testament of how skilled you really are as a make-up artist. What are your essential red carpet kit items or tips? In my kit I have one bag that is filled with my essential items that I tend to use on every job, or at least like to have on hand. It contains scissors, tweezers, lash glues (black, clear and Ben Nye Liquid latex 22

EACH ISSUE

I have been on a lot of beauty shoots this month – working lots of bad girl kohl, naughty red lips and achieving beautiful flawless skin with a myriad of products. Over the winter we tend to get a little more flamboyant with our make-up and use heavier textures so I wanted to just talk about getting our skin back in tune and although we have quite a few months to go, getting our skin ready for spring. After all, the new Spring/Summer collections hit the shelves in FebruaryMarch so our skin should also be prepared.

Parched dry skin is just awful so I’m all about skin perfectors. One of my all time favourites is BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector (Kryolan have just launched their own too which is fabulous also), it’s a lovely liquid which gives the skin a halo of luminosity and radiance. I used this on the models skin for an Harrods beauty shoot this month. I mixed it in with another new favourite Illusion Tinted Moisturiser by Hourglass – this liquid foundation gives a medium to full coverage but I watered it down with the BECCA and the models skin just came alive. It also has Hyaluronic Filling Spheres which basically means it hides wrinkles and minimizes pores… what more could a girl ask! I was shooting in Palm Springs with the gorgeous model Sigrid (Chanel’s new muse) and fiercely protected her skin with SISLEY suncare range (expensive but the best!) I have only recently discovered W W W .T WO -- M AGA ZI N E. CO M

RMS Beauty Un’cover-up concealer and Lip2cheek which is not only organic, but make-up artist Rose Swift, who developed this line, has made sure all the nasty chemicals have been taken out thus making it a true and pure organic range. The concealer is just amazing, light and creamy and invisible – its truly a little pot of miracles! When shooting in daylight the last thing I want to see is creased up cakey concealer. The Lip2Cheek is densely pigmented and a little goes a long way but it melts into cheeks and lips and gives the most beautiful hue of colour…. with a lick

My faves are Onyx for black boldness, Midnight which is a gorgeous inky blue and Metallic Moss – they will make your eyes look like molten baubles! For those on a budget you can’t beat Barry M, just for the seriously huge amount of colours from pastel to brights to jeweled. Well I’m off to India for a couple of weeks where I shall be coveting coloured mascaras on the beach… nothing better than tanned skin and coloured lashes!! Then it’s straight into Fashion Week!!! ollywood legend to cosmetics entrepreneur – Shu Uemura was a true pioneer of the makeup industry. Born in 1928, the son of a wealthy Tokyo merchant, Shu Uemura was bedridden for five years after being diagnosed with tuberculosis as a teenager. On his recovery his entrepreneurial spirit was clear as he decided upon a future career that “matched my interests and character in a field that nobody had ever tried before.” He enrolled on a fashion course before switching to the Tokyo Beauty Academy where he was the only male student in a class of 130.

speaker to assist with make-up, “The headmaster suggested they take me and that was the beginning of my work in cosmetics.” His next step was a move to Hollywood, where he developed his skills alongside some of the leading make-up artists of the day. It was while working as an understudy to the legendary Frank Westmore on the set of 1962 movie My Geisha, that he was called upon to tranform the red-haired Shirley MacLaine into a Japanese courtesan. The result was incredible and established him as a favourite with Hollywood stars, most notably Frank Sinatra who later gave Mr. Uemura a make-up case inscribed with the message ‘Shu Shu baby’ – a phrase taken

from the popular song ‘Shoo Shoo Baby’. At the height of his fame he moved back to Tokyo saying “it was time to change direction. I needed to teach what had learned and expand my own ideas.” He returned to Tokyo, opened the Shu Uemara Make-up Institute in 1964 and started his own company Japan Makeup. In 1967 he created iconic Unmask Cleansing Oil which removes make-up without removing moisture from the skin. The product became popular in Hollywood with celebrity fans that included Elizabeth Taylor. With his belief that beautiful make-up starts with beautiful skin, cleansing oils and skin care products became Mr. Uemura’s signature. W W W .T WO -- M AGA ZI N E. CO M

rying to sit down for a quick chat with the lovely, talented hair and make-up maven, Katie Pettigrew, is no easy task. She’d just got back from a shoot in Antigua and was straight off on a 4-day shoot in London the morning after landing! What was your route into hair and make-up? When I left school I had no intention of becoming a hair and make-up artist! When I was younger I wanted to be a nurse or a veterinary nurse – anything medical! I was quite obsessed by it but unfortunately lost my Mum at a young and difficult age. This had a bit of a knock-on effect with my schooling and I didn’t get the grades required. At that stage I was really unsure of what I wanted to do.

At the time, a school friend of mine was going to study hairdressing at college and I thought “that sounds alright” so also applied and was accepted. I spent two years training to be a hairdresser/beauty therapist and had dreams of working on cruise ships travelling around the world. During my third and final year we studied theatrical and media make-up where I met my lecturer Michelle who was a total inspiration. It was then that I knew what I wanted do. Michelle took me on film shoots every weekend (on location in the Midlands where I grew up) and I’d spend my Saturday afternoons being spattered with peat from fake explosions and narrowly avoiding galloping horses from battle scenes. By the time I got home I’d usually be covered head to toe in mud – bonkers when you look back at it! Not too long after the course finished, I uplifted my Midland roots, packed my Ford Fiesta and headed down to the big smoke. That was over 16 years ago!

I never assisted anyone, maybe a mistake, but I was soon working in London mainly in theatre. I was in the wig room at Phantom of the Opera for a while. I then started working in different areas having fun doing pop promos and commercials. I eventually became more aware of agencies and from then on I’ve stuck to more fashion based work. College will only take you to a certain level. Most of your skills will be learnt on the job and developed through years of watching others, picking up tips, online tutorials, constantly flicking through mags etc before being truly competent.

977 was the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It was also the year of Anarchy in the UK and punk rebellion spilled out onto Britain’s streets as youth culture reigned supreme. This is the backdrop to and inspiration behind the work of Prefab 77, an urban art collective from the north east of England. Their name derives from pre-packaged and pre-made consumerism and their work from a collage of vintage British cultural references.

77

They produce original pieces for both the gallery and the street that are part fantasy and part social commentary. Either drawn or painted, screen-printed or hand drawn their graphic, hard-edged images are chaotic, thought-provoking and stunningly beautiful. Limited edition prints are available to buy via their website and commissioned pieces are available on request.

This Richard Lowenstein directed video features the late, great Michael Hutchence mysteriously strolling through the gorgeous medieval streets of Prague. The song is from INXS’s sixth studio album, Kick and reached #24 in the UK and #7 in the US. Look out for the bizarre yet beautiful sax solo from a cemetery by Kirk Pengrilly.
