When did you decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I did a photography course when I was 16 and the subject was narcissism. We had to make self-portraits and I kept on changing myself with make-up. I loved the instant nature of make-up – the instant transformation. At the time, I didn’t even realise that make could be a profession, but my mother noticed an ad for a make-up school in Amsterdam, so that was the first ‘official’ make-up education I enjoyed. You trained at the Christian Chauveau Technical School of make-up in Paris, how did this prepare you for a career in the beauty industry? The thing that was great about this school was that you had all make-up materials at your disposal to experiment with, something I would not have been able to as a young girl. The atmosphere was inspiring and I loved being buried in make-up 24 hours a day and had very little else on my mind. I still believe though that self-tuition is even more important in creating your own style.

What’s your make-up style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you? I am a child of the eighties and I perfected that technique. After that I let the technique go and my hand became more free and loose. I like to apply make-up quickly so it is not flawless and flat, but still has some poetry; rather an eyeliner that suggests movement than a perfect line. Who or what inspires you? I like looking at beauty myths and giving them a different twist. For instance I like to make fun of the ridiculous statements from other makeup companies who claim their mascara will make your lashes sooo much longer – then I make a picture with lashes of surreal length.

Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? I do not like location shoots because I was never a make-up artist who did bathing suit shoots on the Maldives. I always ended up in freezing, windy, dark places. I really love the studio because the setting is controlled and you normally end up with a beautiful picture, but the buzz and the social interaction of the shows is fantastic too!

Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Lipstick is probably the product that you have to re-apply most, but I am a great believer in doing your make-up, forgetting about it and going out into the world. Nothing is as unattractive as a woman who stares into the mirror all day.
Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? I had some hero make-up artists in my life that I admired from afar, but nobody directly comes to mind who actually helped me... I never assisted anyone for instance. People that helped me were photographers and stylists like, Mario Testino, Emmanuelle Alt, and Karl Lagerfeld...

How has growing up in The Netherlands influenced the way you work? Holland is a great country for industrial design, painting of course, and colour, but I am not sure to what extent that has influenced me. More likely is that my ideas about style and make-up is influence by the Dutch sense of freedom and the nonconformist attitude
Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? Children! No matter what they look like, I love their honesty and curiosity. It shows in their faces.
You have worked with some of the world’s most legendary photographers and famously collaborated with Mario Testino. Tell us how this came about? Mario came to Amsterdam to do a shoot for L’Uomo Vogue and he was looking for a local artist to work with. So he asked all agencies to send him books of their artists, and he picked me. He later told me that it was especially my book with special effects Do you feel the industry that had intrigued him. What made you decide to create your own make-up brand? Frustration that what I wanted as a woman did not exist on the market yet. So I had to make it myself. What are your plans for the future? Any exciting new products you would like to tell us about? I am working on a range of lip shades in a fourth texture, and this one will be extreeeeeemely long-lasting, but without the usual drying out of the lips – I believe I have created a texture that is really comfortable to wear. And I am also trying to expand the portability of our products, but with an extra possibility to introduce compact products, such as compact foundation. And for after that I luckily have many more ideas to make the brand grow.

4. PU M I CE S TO N E For those of you looking for something a little less fragranced a Pumice stone is available from any chemist or even supermarkets. The stone will gently exfoliate rough skin usually rounded in shape and can be used on hands, feet, elbows and knees. Use on wet or damp skin and buff away the roughness. 5. B LI S S G LA M O UR G L O VE S A magic moisturising 20 minute softening treatment. The gloves are lined with gel that not only instantly softens even the hardest working hands but lasts for up to 50 uses. The layout for the book is amazing, with strong, interesting and mesmerising fashion imagery, some that I’ve seen and some not. I love how Paul introduces the reader to lesser known photographers with a synopsis of their work and has mixed it with the established photographer’s images, showing how fashion photography has evolved, especially with the advancement of digital work. So if there’s one book you should buy for yourself or as a gift for close, fashion conscious friends this year it’s New Fashion Photography, releasing this month in the UK and May in the US. It will be available at all leading book stockists. Paul has two other books being published soon which you should also check out Shoe Obsession (Yale/The Fashion Institute of Technology, New York) and Common Ground (Yale). Other books Paul has worked on include: Isabella Blow, Daphne Guinness, Balenciaga and his Legacy and Gothic: Dark Glamour.

Paul’s awards include: 2012 British Book Design Award for Book Art (Gestalten/Page One), AAM Design Award for Madame Gres (The Fashion Institute of Technology, New York) and AAM Design Runner-Up Award for Gothic: Dark Glamour (The Fashion Institute of Technology, New York).

hen director Sofia Coppola cast former child star Scarlet Johansson as Charlotte, a twenty-something neglected young wife and fish out of water in Lost in Translation, many would have expected the 18 year old to be too young and inexperienced for such a demanding role but her accomplished performance alongside comedy legend Bill Murray instantly made her one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses. A native New Yorker, Scarlett Johansson was born into a creative family – her Danish grandfather was a screenwriter and her mother a producer – singing and acting in musical theatre from the age of just 8 Johansson was ‘one of those jazz-hands kids.’ Her first critically acclaimed role was in 1998s The Horse Whisperer. The film star and director Robert Redford said she was ‘13 going on 30,’ an early recognition of the maturity of her performances.
// I C O N S //
Following Lost in Translation and Girl With A Pearl Earring Johansson took on a variety of projects that included the crime thriller The Black Dalia and several collaborations with director Woody Allen. Aside from acting she fronted tongue-in-cheek ad campaigns for Dolce & Gabbana, released two albums and became a Global Ambassador for Oxfam. After her award-winning Broadway debut in the 2009 production of Arthur Miller’s A View From The River Johansson returned to the big screen as comic book villainess Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Last year she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

IN HER exclusive COLUMN E AC H ISSUE

ust before I left for Shanghai I managed to squeeze in a fabulous beauty shoot for Volt magazine – I had free reign to do whatever I wanted as long as it was bold and colourful – you don’t need to ask me twice! I love playing with colour and textures and always turn to my reliable Make Up For Ever 12 Flash Colour Palette. From using the colours straight out of the palette to mixing up new ones this product just brings me JOY! The creamy consistency means it’s fabulous on both eyes and lips and I can turn the colour matte instantly with my new favorite NARS Light Reflecting Setting Powder, this amazing product will not alter the colour, letting whatever it is you are setting remain true to

colour. I have also become a huge fan of NARS Correct and Perfect Concealer, these easily blendable tubes of medium coverage concealer obscure imperfections and have a soft matte finish which is my preferred skin texture this season. I used this and only this on the models skin for this beauty story. Another amazing rediscovery is my Kryolan eye palettes, in a myriad of colours and textures from matte to cream I can’t go anywhere without them now, they are highly pigmented so you can build them up from a wash to vivid bright colour – AMAZOID! For the lip’s on this shoot I used Giorgio Armani’s Lip Maestro – I can’t get enough of these, they go on like a lip gloss but leave the lips with a velvet semi matte texture – a real winner.

Another discovery this month left me gob smacked – I was introduced to a world first by CARGO – waterproof blush – yes I can hear you all going yeah yeah whatev’s… but in front of my very own eyes these amazing blushers which come in 3 pretty shades, were immersed in a jug of water… I waited and after a minute they were retrieved and low and behold the water just vanished, not a drop penetrated the product. This will be perfect for festival season coming up – no more streaky sweaty blush cheeks – it will definitely be used on my artists at Glastonbury for sure!
I must end on congratulating the fantastical make-up whizz that is Val Garland – I had the pleasure of being invited to her MAC Master class on March 27th and she took us on a journey of make-up that was beyond sublime… from a retrospective of looks for Alexander McQueen to last season’s Cocteau inspired make-up for Vivienne Westwood, it was a nigh of make-up magic that was unforgettable. I’m about to board… next stop Shanghai!

his season the focus was on skin, with shows such as Bluemarine, Sportmax and Tommy Hilfiger sending the models down the runway with perfected luminous skin, cementing the look as a huge trend for Spring/Summer 2013. Terry Barber described the trend for skin as ‘almost as if you are seeing make-up through skin care’ – in other words the make-up had to look as though only skincare had been used. AS A MODEL, LAUREN GREGORY STARRED IN CAMPAIGNS FOR HIGH-END BRANDS SUCH AS VIVIENNE WESTWOOD AND DIESEL, WORKING WITH SOME OF THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHERS. AS A BUSINESSWOMAN, SHE’S TURNED AROUND THE FORTUNES OF TWO NORWICH PUBS, ESTABLISHED AN EVENTS COMPANY AND BUILT QUITE A NAME FOR HERSELF IN THROWING THE BEST PARTIES IN TOWN.
Lauren, tell us about the start of your modeling career. How did it all start? I was starting my first degree at St Martins when I was spotted in Topshop in Oxford Circus. I was off to a rave that evening and was more interested in getting my outfit together than the poor Models 1 scout! I forgot all about it and a week later shaved off my hair and bleached it blonde (the joys of being an art student) but then got a call from the agency to say I had to go and see Vivienne Westwood. I felt an absolute idiot walking in to the agency to show them my shaved head, but thankfully Vivienne liked it and I got the job for her campaign.
// B U S I N E S S M O D E L S //
Did you see modeling as a career? No, it was absolutely a short term fix. I was daft at that age and couldn’t think about much more than going out and having nice shoes. But I was a student, and it meant that I didn’t have to get a loan – super lucky! Do you think that modeling opened up any doors for you or inspired future career choices? Yes of course. I’ve met lots of celebrities, been given lots of nice clothes, make-up and hair products. Been to lots of good parties. But it can also be very superficial and it gave me quite a determination to get some groundings. Tell me about life after modeling. You seem to have built quite an empire! It started with a pub in Norwich called The Birdcage. It was very run down and I don’t know what possessed me to do it but I just thought ‘let’s do something fun, let’s build a business… ‘ After that you got bitten by the business bug? Yes. For a few years I worked in music as a PA and in tour management but I’ve now got two pubs. My second, the Sir Garnet, is right in the center of Norwich Market and is steeped in history. At the Sir Garnet we wanted to look after local suppliers and go back to the basics

of what pubs should be about; a great place to come and have a natter. With the world of twitter and social media it’s nice to have a face-to-face conversation once in a while! We are also starting the renovations to turn upstairs in to a private members bar. Never a dull moment! It’s hard to imagine you can fit much more into your life, but you do – tell us about Lullaby Inc. It’s my events company – we do pop-up parties, fashion events and weddings. A recent event for Uniqlo and Lulu Guinness saw me (and a whole load of gin-bribed friends) gluing 1,000 individually crafted Lulu lips onto drinking straws!

Still suffering for fashion, then! But if it keeps you in shoes… Talking of shoes, do you think that your years as a model gave you an unhealthy appetite for fabulous things? No I think I must have had that in me. Frankie (my daughter) will absolutely not go out without her red Start-rite shoes at the moment so it must be genetic! I hate lazy dress sense... you can look amazing buying the right things from Primark so there’s no excuse for wearing your pyjamas and Uggs to go and meet your friends. Not in my books.

orn on the 18th of November 1974 and raised in Darien, Connecticut Chloe Stevens Sevigny (without umlaut) enjoyed a carefree childhood. Her father was an interior designer descended from a 17th-century French aristocrat, the Marquise de Sevigne. Her mother, originally from Poland, was an elementary school teacher. During her earliest school years Chloë knew that she wanted to act. She scored roles in all her school plays and attended theatre camps during the summer holidays. However in high school she started losing interest in both acting and school itself, often skipping school to hang out with her brother’s skater friends. At 18 she moved to Brooklyn, New York and was discovered at a newsstand by Andrea Lee Linett, Editor of teen magazine, Sassy. Linett encouraged Chloë to appear in a photo shoot and afterwards took her on as an intern for the summer. This led to modelling jobs and appearances in pop videos including Sonic Youth’s Sugar Kane. Her biggest job offer came when she was booked to shoot with renowned fashion photographer Steven Meisel for Italian Vogue, but she never showed up.

Chloë wasn’t a self-promoter like most celebrities, but in the mid ‘90s Jay McInerney elevated her to the status of Manhattan’s leading It girl by writing a seven page profile entitled ‘Chloe’s Scene’ for The New Yorker. Published in the November 7, 1994 issue McInerney’s piece dubbed her ‘the coolest girl in the world’. ‘Today the term [It girl] is used to describe, say, Peaches Geldof — a girl who doesn’t do anything but is just sort of around. When I got called the It girl everyone thought I was that too. I looked like a junkie because it was the 1990s and grunge was the fashion. But I felt I was doing stuff, not just being a socialite’ Playboy 2011. Unlike a lot of girls who at some point hung out in the wrong crowds, Chloë chose well. Her crowd was driven, artistic and wanted to make movies. A skater friend Harmony Korine who she would later date was also trying to carve out an artistic career in the big apple. His big break came when he ran into Larry Clark and ended up writing the film Kids, a controversial yet definitive film of that decade. It turned out to be Chloë’s acting debut. earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. Not too shabby for a debut performer wearing her own clothes! Tragically in 1996, when she was still in her early twenties, Chloë’s father David passed away from cancer. and obviously inspired her own fashion sense… ‘He had some serious style. Fedoras, trenchcoats – very classic. He even wore those straps [garters] that hold socks up.’ Chloë became the epitome of grungy New York and took her first serious steps into the fashion scene when she began

working as a creative director for Imitation of Christ. IOC as fashionistas called it was her close friend Zara Subkoff’s thrift-to-fabulous clothing label and Chloë helped her to edit the collections and style the models. When the economy went under so did IOC but then, Chloë always had indie films to get back into. In 2000 she was Oscar-nominated for her role in the Boys Don’t Cry and played Jean in the film adaptation of American Psycho alongside Hollywood superstar Christian Bale. She followed this with a string of films that went largely unnoticed. Well, that was until Vincent Gallo’s Brown Bunny (2003) her most controversial role to date.
“

”
Her role in that film was so extreme many critics and audiences felt it would be the end of her career but surprisingly it opened up doors to more mainstream movies such as 2007’s Zodiac. Chloe also graced the small screen with a bit part in Will & Grace (2004) and playing the lead role in 2005 HBO drama Big Love for which she won a Golden Globe. However, in 2008, with no films lined up for release and on a break from Big Love, Chloë reset her focus from acting to fashion. house Chloé’s new ‘Chloé’ fragrance, and campaigns for Louis Vuitton, H&M and Mui Mui, she debuted her first line of clothing... a collaboration with Humberto Leon’s hip New York label Opening Ceremony that showcases talent from around the world. Her first collection ‘Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony’ was a mix and match ready-to-wear line influenced by both ’90s and ’50s fashion. It was an immediate success and sold out in all 100 boutiques, despite the high price tags (items ranged from $150-$595). In the same year for a consecutive six months, Chloë was featured as a Style Advisor for Elle magazine UK, offering fashion advice to the fashion conscious. She also featured as a spokesperson for MAC cosmetics Viva la Glam campaign which raises funds and awareness for AIDS.

Although her collaboration with Opening Ceremony was marketed as being a one-off, in 2009 Chloë showed the fall/ winter line at London Fashion Week featuring prints by Liberty of London and has released collections every year since. Her latest includes a heavy nod to the sixties. ‘I basically make whatever my friends and I want to wear; it’s completely selfish!’

KT AULETA FOR OPENING CEREMONY
Unlike most celebrities, Chloë does not hire a stylist and regularly does her own makeup favouring her lashes over any other feature. Her own style, a mixture of vintage and designer pieces has made her notorious among the fashion set and she often graces the best dressed lists. She has made some bold choices both in fashion and in her career and most of them have paid off. So if you’re thinking of rocking the ’90s trend, do it with angst and don’t forget to add an umlaut to your name! W W W.T WO -- M AGA ZI N E .CO M I S S U E 08 // M AY 2013
