he 90s marked a look made famous by the supermodels of the time Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer to name a few. A look that involved matt looking skin, stoney taupey matt eye shades and a nudey brown lip. This monachromatic look has remained a strong favourite on the catwalks and editorials for many seasons running so here’s the best of the 90s looks I love right now.

Matt it Out – Primer: Keeping to the traditional 90s look of mega matte skin start by using Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty balm, which is a BB cream and primer in one. It has incredible soft focus effects on large pores and creates a velvety matte look to the skin. Face: Steering clear of the over-powdered look of the era we want the skin matte but not powdery flat. Lancome 24 hr Teint Idol is one of my favourite matte liquids as it adapts to most skin types and looks velvety matte on the skin and most importantly, stays on. Add on Estée Lauder Double Wear Maximum coverage to any imperfections aswell as under the eyes. This product doubles as a mega coverage foundation for those with pigmentation and scarring.

SANDS STONES & TAUPES Brows: The early 90s saw a copy of the 80s ‘big brow’ but later on we saw the more over plucked look come into play. Now, we want a blend of the two but more on the bolder side, so to keep the focus on brows use a complimentary eyeshadow to define. Eyes: Its tough finding an eye palette purely of matte textured shadows, there always seems to be a few rogue sparkly ones! Kryolan Eyeshadow Variety of 18 in V3 is exactly what you need to create the perfect 90s eye. Very easy to blend

24

but opaque enough to make a dramatic eye they are also great for brow colour (as previous.) Liner: MAC Coffee Eye Pencil ties perfectly in with matte nudey tones around the eye. It’s the ideal shade of brown with this look and although it’s not the softest texture in a pencil, you can’t beat this shade.

CONTOUR QUEEN 90s make-up icon Kevin Aucoin was made famous for his ‘heavy natural’ look and incredibly sculpted faces in this period. With so many fabulous contouring products out there it’s hard choosing a favourite! I love Sleek Contouring palettes in either light, medium or dark – they are outstanding quality and very reasonably priced. And of course, if you want to go luxe Mr Kevin Aucoin’s Sculpting Powder is absolutely genius.

NUDE HUES Lips: To continue our 90s nude trend we match this to the lip. Down the runway we have seen a lot of paired-down lips with just foundation on them to give a modern twist. But to add a fresh, wearable feel to it I’d recommend Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color in Latte or Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Nude. Add a muted brown lip pencil for extra 90s’ ness, my pick is Smashbox The Nude PencIl in either light, medium or dark.

hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I’m not exactly sure when it happened but I was putting make-up on the babysitter by the time I was six years old and I was very interested in hair as well, so something in beauty was on the cards no matter what.

Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere? I guess it’s a bit of both. Starting out as self-taught then topped up with intensive training. When I graduated from university I considered a career doing hair, but it would have been another two years as a full time student. So, I paid a local make-up artist to train me, built a portfolio in six months and was then asked to apply at a MAC Cosmetics counter in Chicago. It was thrilling and I threw myself into MAC training with lists of questions and challenges. After moving to New York a couple of years later I started to assist Francois Nars, Stephane Marais, Val Garland, Mary Greenwell, Pat McGrath etc. and doing runway shows for years was probably the best advanced training I could have ever had. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? My style is quietly sculpted, highly polished and inherently controlled. I like using mostly creams and minimum powder so that there is an obvious contrast in textures across the face but the skin looks like skin. There is no particular period that influences my style, it’s more technique than anything else – a result of assisting Francois and Stephane all those years –

wherein the French craft of application and brush usage is of the utmost importance. I still do enjoy doing loose, spontaneous deconstructed types of work, but my application techniques stay the same even when the end result is different. Who or what inspires you? The question is more about what doesn’t inspire me! I see colours, textures, images, architecture etc and it all churns over in my mind and spawns ideas and designs. Although I would say I have some favorites like British Heritage paint colours, Tamara De Lempika, Camille Rose Garcia, Otto Dix and Norman Foster. Having said that I am forever in the moment with the clothes, the model or entertainment personality, the hair, the event – whether for stills, in motion or in person – and feel like it all needs to work together. I’ll design something spontaneously and when it all comes together the end result is completely harmonious. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? Oh backstage at shows without a doubt. I feel grateful and appreciate all the travelling I have done while shooting on locations, but nothing beats the thrill of the pressure and speed of a challenging runway show. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Sunscreen with UVA/UVB protection – a minimum of SPF 30 – every day rain or shine.

Your top five favourite products? In no particular order: Sisley Sisleÿa Daily Line Reducer, Dr Hauschka Facial Toner, YSL All-in-one BB Crème, Laura Mercier Lip Silk, Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Matte Lip Colour, Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara, Shu Uemura UV Under Base Mousse, Christian Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palettes, Givenchy Mr Light Corrective Pen, Avon SuperShock Gel Eyeliner Pencils… Sorry that’s more than five but I could have listed about 25! Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? Mary Greenwell helped me immensely when I moved to London in the late 90s and to this day I have the deepest affection for her. Terry Barber at MAC and David Horne at Illamasqua have also been amazing and incredible encyclopedias of technical knowledge and damn good advice. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industryrelated story. The very first time I was booked for a runway show it was a Galliano show in NYC assisting Stephane Marais. I was a bit early and when I walked through the front door a charming chap opened it for me, put out his hand and said in an English accent, ‘Hello, I’m John.’ ALL of the supermodels were there. By the time three hours had passed, we were touching up the models as they lined up to go out on the runway. Kate Moss was shouting for make-up because one of her eyes was tearing, there was a massive gap in her enormous smudgy black eye where the tears had run out and Stephane told me to leave it because it only added to the drama of the

show. I noticed the guy from the front door fixing the clothes right before they models went out from backstage and only then it occurred to me I had met John Galliano! I had done Amber Valetta’s make-up and her photos were all over the glossy magazines in a matter of weeks. It got me hooked on the runway rush. You grew up in Chicago, how do you feel that has influenced your work? I think growing up in the Midwest gave me a real appreciation of straight and plain conversation – and since all of my work requires a fair amount of collaborating this has been really useful in getting to the crux of what works for each job. The other way that Chicago has influenced me is that my time at University of Illinois really opened up my eyes to international cultures and aesthetics, which then spurred me on to move overseas and experience it all first hand. Do you feel the industry has changed since you started? Yes, technological advances have moved the goal posts in terms of the quality of work and standards required to keep clients happy. When images were permanently sent from the camera onto film, everything had to be more perfect. But now digital techs can smooth over anything that needs to be changed in an image so hair and makeup doesn’t need to be quite as fabulous. The difference in less obvious in high end advertising and red carpet events etc, where impeccable standards are still in place. But the mass market end of most businesses beauty work is a bit more retouched than it used to be.

Which defines beauty for you? Beauty for me is defined by a sunset view over an ocean with lavish colors in the sky, a cool breeze over my shoulders, a table full of my friends and family with a Bombay Sapphire and tonic in my hand. What could be more beautiful than that? Insofar as visuals go, beauty for me is probably defined by Tamara De Lempika… the light, the make-up, the mood… all of it. As one of the most in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? It’s difficult to find time to relax. My husband often tells me ‘It’s 11pm, turn off your laptop.’ But recently I’ve tried to make more of an effort to take Sundays off the clock and go to the park or to travel to remote places without wireless and patchy cell phone reception. I call it e-hab instead of rehab – tech withdrawal where I get serious jitters about being unplugged but then force myself to unwind. What are your plans for the future? Any exciting projects to tell us about? Ahhhh yes. I can’t talk about some of it yet but I would say I’ll be getting back to traveling back and forth between London and NYC again. I did this for years but have stayed in London for the last couple of years. I’ll be getting a project off the ground and getting back to the transatlantic route next year.

SEPTEMBER SKIN REPAIR WITH SKINCARE EXPERT FREYA-JA BARKER So, after a slow start we did actually end up having a hot summer here in the UK… even if it did only last for a short time. Now I know a lot of people caught short in the sun and ended up with skin the colour of a lobster – bright red and sore by the looks of it! Never forget your SPF people!!!

S K IN CA R E

VIT C REPAIR . ss13 .

So now that the summer feeling is fading fast and we’re all heading back to school and work, it’s time to start thinking about repairing the damage our summer fun has done to our skin. Vitamin C has been used for years due to its ability to help repair and prevent signs of ageing from sun exposure, pollution, smoking, stress etc. And don’t forget, what we put into our bodies will also help with repair and boosting our post summer skin glow. So, consider taking some extra Vit C supplements such as Body Shop Vitamin C Radiance supplements. Also, be sure to take a closer look at your diet and include lots of red and green hot chillies, kiwi, strawberries, guava, kale, broccoli, cauliflower – all of which contain some of the highest percentages of pure natural Vitamin C.

// S K I N C A R E //

Here are some of my top post summer skin repair products. NUBO VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING CLEANSER In addition to Vitamin C it contains many rich super fruits, seaweed extract, rose hip and kumquat which are all great for dull dehydrated skin. It’s great for increasing hydration levels and with its gorgeous mousse texture it leaves the skin plump and hydrated. RADICAL AGE-DEFYING EXFOLIATING PADS Along with salicylic acid these pads are soaked in coffee, grape, oat, willow, lemon, tangerine, and orange. Simply wipe once a day over the face, neck and décolletage. Note you will feel a tingle but panic not, these are designed for even the most sensitive of skins. They’re not only clinically proven to reduce open pore size by 50% but can also start to lighten the surface of pigmentation and lock the pigment into the cell to help stop it from spreading further. NATURA BISSE C+C VITAMIN COMPLEX This serum is highly repairing. It contains 6% of stabilised vitamin C which will stimulate the formation of collagen. It contains amino acids to help hydration along with rosa mosqueta oil and vitamin E. It also works on cell turnover, luminosity and anti-free radical properties… so it renews, softens and hydrates, leaving skin bright and toned.

DR SEBAGH PURE VITAMIN C POWDER CREAM Dr Sebagh stabilises his vitamin C in a powder form. Often 85% of potency can be lost within an hour of opening a jar. Using your finger tips you can either push the powder into the skin, turning it into a light cream, or my preferred method is to mix it into your day or night cream before application. A wonderful, highly intensive product for fighting against ageing damage. LANCÔME HYDRA ZEN SOOTHING ANTI STRESS MOISTURISING CREAM This is great for anyone that’s over done the fun in the sun this summer. If your skin is stressed, sensitive and red and feels beyond dehydrated then this is for you. It provides 24 hour intense moisture and uses a NeuroCalm complex made of Rose de France to soothe and reduce the environmental stress in the skin leaving it soft, smooth and radiant. ESSENTIAL-C DAILY RENEWAL COMPLEX This is a silky serum designed to use at night that is packed full of both Vitamin C and retinol. It rejuvenates and exfoliates in order to brighten and give back younger looking skin. It is also clinically proven to reduce fine lines by 17%, and reduce photodamage by 46% in just 4 weeks. Follow with your chosen night cream.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get to the fun stuff… make-up! • Color make-up – complexion • Fluid foundations – (airbrush adaptable would be a big bonus) • Full coverage cream foundations (these double as your concealer) – global skin tones and HD compliant • Extreme coverage make-up (for tattoos, birth marks, scars, etc.) • Loose setting powder – no-colour • Pressed powder – translucent or no-colour • Foundation powders – global skin tones and HD compliant (these are optional but highly recommended for a film/video kit) • Blush Palette (warm and cool tones) • Color make-up – eyes • Eye shadow palettes (matte neutral and matte brights – shimmer and metallic accent colors) • Cream/gel or cake eye liner (black and brown) • Eye liner pencils (black, brown, charcoal and taupe) • Mascara: black and brown (regular and waterproof) and clear • False eyelashes/individuals eyelashes – black and brown • Eyelash adhesive • Color make-up – lips • Lip liner pencils – 3 nude colors to accommodate global skin tones • Lipstick palette – basic colors in full coverage cream formula • Lip gloss – clear / silver shimmer / gold shimmer

I guess you have noticed that there aren not any product suggestions in this article, and here’s why. As a make-up artist, I’ve lived through the stress, confusion and substantial investment ($$$) of building a well-stocked professional make-up kit. As an educator I’ve watched my students become overwhelmed, struggling through an endless assortment of products with limited funds. I’ve utilized my experience to help guide new artists towards smart product choices and shown them how to avoid costly mistakes… but my reach was limited. In 2005 I decided to extend a helping hand globally and launched IN MY KIT®, the first online product review and buying guide designed specifically for professional make-up artists. All products reviewed are thoroughly researched and tested under normal working conditions. My personal findings are compared with other working senior make-up artists to guarantee each product’s validity as a sound kit investment. I invite you to visit inmykit.com to see what products are best bets for a highly efficient professional make-up kit! In our next installment I expose myself – not me personally – my kit! I’m going to share what I actually have stashed in my “working” makeup kit. So don’t miss issue #13 of TWO for the reveal! Until then, much love and light make-up mavens – xoxo

orn in London to American parents, Elizabeth Taylor’s dark hair and violet eyes quickly came to the attention of Hollywood’s movie studios. Many successes, including adult roles in movies such as Giant with James Dean and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof were only overshadowed by her off-screen life and a succession of rich and famous husbands. Her love of jewellery was notorious and 4th husband Eddie Fisher said a $50,000 diamond could keep Taylor happy for approximately four days! Fifth husband Richard Burton made time for her when he bought her one of the world’s largest diamonds, the ‘Burton-Cartier Diamond’, for over a million dollars. For the lavish 1963 production Cleopatra, she reportedly received a salary of $1,000,000, “If someone’s dumb enough to offer me a million dollars to make a picture, I’m certainly not dumb enough to turn it down!”

Born into British aristocracy, she portrayed the image of a carefree eccentric but childhood tragedy and depression left her battling her own personal demons throughout her short life. After a stint in New York where she befriended artists such as Warhol and Lichtenstein, her 30 year career in fashion began as Anna Wintour’s assistant at US Vogue. On her return to London in 1986 she worked at Tatler, British Vogue and later became Fashion director of the Sunday Times Style. Central Saint Martins student named Alexander McQueen. It is now written into fashion folklore that Blow bought McQueen’s graduate collection for £5,000, an act that was acknowledged when McQueen dedicated his critically acclaimed 1996 AW collection ‘Dante’ to her. Her knack for spotting talent continued when she discovered model Sophie Dahl in tears on a Kensington street corner. Another famous Blow discovery was the milliner Philip Treacy who became a life-long friend and confidante. Rarely seen without a Treacy creation on her head, hats and shoes clearly played an essential role in her outlook on life and work, “Tip: Always accentuate the head and the feet”.

“Fashion is a vampiric thing, it’s the hoover on your brain. That’s why I wear hats, to keep everyone away from me” By the time of her tragic death in 2007 Isabella Blow was a legendary figure in the international fashion world. Later this year Somerset House, in partnership with the Isabella Blow Foundation and Central Saint Martins pay tribute by bringing together over a hundred pieces from her collection for an exhibition that will provide a colourful insight into one of fashions most flamboyant characters. The exhibition Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore runs from 20th November 2013, [ click here ] to learn more.

MALE GROOMING

HAIR REMOVAL . ss13 .

ot so long ago if a man had a body grooming regime you could be sure he was either a cyclist or a stripper! Well, those dark days are over because it’s fair to say that the hairy caveman look is offically extinct. Today, men are cutting, clipping, shaving and waxing unwanted body hair for a more groomed appearance and with a multitude of quick, easy and relatively painless products available, no-one needs to go through the horrific experience suffered by Steve Carrell whilst filming The 40-YearOld Virgin – a genuine waxing scene with the cameras left rolling. Ouch!

Winner of an MTV Video Music Award in 1998, this video uses CGI (Thats computer generated imagery for our older readers!), to morph the bands faces to other bodies. The ‘suggestive’ song from their album Nine Lives only hit number 27 in the US charts but won them their fourth Grammy. Gotta’ love those bunny ears.
