hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I was working in retail and one day while feeling kind of restless I had a random thought that I’d like to become a make-up artist as I wouldn’t have to work everyday and I could wear what I wanted!

Are you self-taught or did you train? I did a six week fashion make-up course at a school that’s now shut down… that’s how long ago it was! How would you define your style? Any particular period that has influenced you most? I would define my style as sexy, wearable, glamour. I don’t feel I have been overly influenced by a particular period but if I had to choose I do love the 60s and 70s as the girls had a sassy, sex appeal. Who or what inspires you? Random acts of kindness and people who have triumphed through adversity. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? I love working in a show environment and with other artists as team work can be amazing fun with the right group of people and there is always something new to learn from others. Mind you a nice warm location always goes down a treat with me too!

Tell us about My-management, your consultancy that represents beauty industry professionals. I set up My-management UK about six years ago as it offers a more flexible type of arrangement than most agency style representations. We are a small but dedicated company that manages a handful of make-up and hair artists, stylists and a couple of photographers. I have great people working for me and I like the variety that being both a make-up artist and company owner offers. As a successful business woman, do you feel it’s important for a professional make-up artist to be commercially savvy? Definitely! You have to think outside the box as markets change and the industry is transient and can be fickle. Unless you want to be waiting for somebody to tell you when your next job is you better wise up and have a think about what your unique selling points are and how you are going to market them. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Tinted sunscreen to be used on the back of hands and face. Your top five favourite products? Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara, Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, Mac eyebrow pencils in Lingering and Fling, Avon supershock gel eyeliner pencil and Bobbi Brown eye brightener.

Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? Apart from the inimitable Mary Greenwell?! I have had help from many generous artists, new and established, who have offered advice or product information along my way. I am a big believer in being open with people, sharing knowledge and always being mindful that there is more to learn. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. I was travelling with an A-lister and to avoid fans and press she put me in her car and took another less conspicuous one. Needless to say once arriving near the red carpet all the paparazzi were going crazy outside her car only to be somewhat disappointed when I stepped out! Do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? I think the internet has changed the industry hugely. The opportunities for a global following is bigger and what was once a relatively small network of artists working quietly in the background creating magic has now become quite a saturated market. What is expected of an artist has also changed in terms being able to deliver more in less time and under budget! Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? Kindness and laughter.

As one of the most in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? Being a single mum of a 16 year-old as well as an 8 year-old it is important to work on the balance of my life as they are my priority. I try and focus on certain jobs that will deliver me what I need or want rather then going for everything that comes up. What are your plans for the future? Any exciting projects to tell us about? I have set up another division to my company and collaborated with my longterm friend and artist Sarah Reygate and set up MY- Make-up Masterclasses. They are aimed at aspiring artists or groups of women who would like to learn the art of make-up. [ Click here ] if you would like to know more.

ith these cooler days rolling in fast comes a shift in our beauty regimes; in particular our skin. Gone is the holiday tan and a desire for a more fuller coverage is needed. Instead of heavy, dry and ultra matte-looking skin, there has been a new style of Autumn/Winter skin that can only be described as like ‘Velvet’. “A richly decadent, full cream textured skin that’s not heavy, but hydrated and perfectly perfected.” And here are the go-to products for this seasons new skin trend, as seen in Fall 2013 shows like Victoria Beckham and Isabel Marant…

STEP 1 MOISTURE & MASSAGE Start by spritzing the skin with a facial toner like Dr Hauschka facial toner to clarify and prepare the skin for moisture. It’s heavenly rose scent really lifts and refreshes you. With the change of the season comes the need for more moisture and thankfully the biggest skin trend right now is facial oils! My two favourite picks are Rodial Stemcell Superfood facial oil and Decleor Aromessence face oil. A lot of oils are too greasy to wear in the day but both of these absorb quickly, especially when lightly massaged into the face and neckline. (If you are particularly oily then just do this step at night.)

STEP 2 PR I M E TI M E There’s so so many primers on the market these days and the tricky thing is they all give different types of texture appearances to your base. To create the ultimate velvet texture to your foundation I love the Hourglass No.28 Primer Serum – it’s absolutely incredible! When first applied it feels like a facial oil but then quickly absorbs and turns into a cushiony springboard for your foundation! Once completely massaged in properly it will set and be ready for any foundation you apply. Also keeps make-up on for a lot longer too.

STEP 3 F U LL & C R EA M Y Once we’ve primed our skin and it has absorbed, it’s time to perfect our skin. Japanese brand SUQQU have some stunning foundations and one of my favourites is the new Fix Frame Foundation cream. It’s rich and creamy but goes on like a transclucent veil that lasts all day. It really mimics a velvet-like skin texture with the combination of the Hourglass primer and of course the ever-important concealer! Next we need to conceal through the front plane of the face to give that extra bit of Velvet to the skin. By Terry’s newest member of the concealer family is the Touché Veloutee pen that conceals, camouflages and creates a beautiful texture to the look of the skin. Seal in and set with By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder to complete the effect.

STEP 4 COM PL ETE THE L OOK A creamy blush is a must-have for this look! My top pick this season is Chanel’s new Le Blush Creme in Revelation 63. A Lip Stain. Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey Douce 001 – the most moisturising lip stain that stays on! MAKE-UP

JAMES READ CELEB TANNER JAMES READ, AKA THE TANTALIST, SHARES THE TOOLS OF HIS TRADE AND THE SECRETS OF A GORGEOUS A-LIST TAN What was your route into the industry? I first started working for St Tropez tan, which helped me gain the experience in the industry. I was the UK’s first tanning expert, my goal was for a tanning expert to be on the same level as a hair dresser, make up and nail artist and now it is. I then left St Tropez and worked with lots of brands around the world on new product launches and developing new products and the rest is history. Any tanning tips to avoid tell-tale lines? 01. Wax 48 hours before 02. Exfoliate 24 hours before your tan 03. Using a tanning mitt build your tan up in fine layers. Apply one layer, wait 30 mins and then apply a second layer 04. Wear loose clothing 05. Leave your tan for 8-12 hours 06. Avoid water before your tan has been washed off 07. Try not to sweat 08. Don’t wear a bra 09. Avoid the gym the day after washing off your tan 10. Don’t use oily based moisturisers

What sets your tanning products apart from the many others on the market? My range is not just about a tan, it also combines skin care, it’s fragrance free and look like a real tan. I was the first to bring out a BB gradual tan in a pen with a brush and the first sleep tan mask – I like to think outside of the box, I like to bring out new and interesting products, being innovative is very important to me. Next year I have some amazing products coming out, watch this space… Which one product is absolutely essential to your kit? Nivea Visage wipes are the best thing to get rid of self-tan and of course my wash-off tan with my mitt. A pro tip for a first-time home tanner? Always use a tanning mitt for a perfect looking tan. Also, don’t wash your hands for at least eight hours as you don’t want brown arms and white hands! A celebrity, past or present, you would love to work with? I have already been lucky enough to work with some of the biggest and inspiring stars in the world.

ondon Fashion Week was so much fun this year. I had the pleasure of working alongside Maybelline New York and Mollie King of The Saturdays for the launch her very own lipstick, Maybelline Colour Sensastional in Fuchsia Flush – a gorgeous vibrant pink. I was up at the crack of dawn to get Mollie ready to meet her beauty fans at Somerset House in London. Using the Maybelline range I discovered some fantastic new products which give the luxury brands a real run for their money. I have been a Maybelline fan since I started doing make-up 19 years ago – back then, every working artist had the cult ‘Great Lash’ mascara in their kit and I still do today. It’s a renowned mascara but please go and try these five goodies that I think are the ‘hero’ products in their range. Fit Me liquid Foundation glides on and is super creamy and light but also gives a beautiful coverage and doesn’t need any setting powder. However, if you like it matte, try the Super Stay 24hr Waterproof Powder. Yes, you heard me right – waterproof! This is perfect

for nights on the dancefloor when you’d rather not resemble a greased piglet! It’s a winner for hot location shoots too and is now a permanent fixture in my kit. Take a look at ‘Brow Drama’ a colored sculpting mascara for your brows – totes amaze I tell ya! Colour Tattoo 24hr Gel Cream Shadow blew me away and I used this for the catwalk shows we did at LFW. Five shows a day and this did not crease at all. With a fabulous selection of colours it’s definitely another winner. Finally I have to mention ‘Baby Lips’ Lip Balm, again in a colors from pink punch to nude, it’s not just great for your lips but looks fabulous as a skin highlighter on the cheekbones and dabbed on the eye lids for that sexy glossy eye that’s so in this season. From LFW I flew to Copenhagen where I was shooting with NEXT. I then came straight back and it was the lovely Tess Daly who was waiting for me for her press shoots for Strictly Come Dancing. Tess likes to look natural and glossy, so I didn’t want to use any heavy foundations – I just concealed using RMS Un-cover Concealer under the eyes. As she has blemish free and even skin, I just used creamy tones to sculpt the face – a feline flick and a lick of a golden nude lip gloss and she was photo ready! All this, along with shooting my girls from The Face UK for The Outnet, and it was a busy month indeed. Stay tuned to the The Face UK and please let me know your thoughts on the make-up by sending a tweet @TheLizMartins – until next time, Liz x W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 14 // N OV E M B ER 2013

IT’S USUALLY A POSITIVE TO HEAR ABOUT A GIRL MAKING MARK IN THE BUSINESS WORLD, BUT WHEN THEY STEP IN A PREDOMINANTLY MALE ARENA, SET THEIR OWN TERMS A TAKE ON THE BIG BRANDS, YOU CAN’T HELP BUT BE INSPIRED DISSAPOINTED WITH THE OUTDOOR CLOTHING MARKET, HEI BIRGISDÓTTIR LAUNCHED NIKITA IN 2000 – THE ONLY FEM SPECIFIC LABEL AT THE TIME – AND HASN’T LOOKED BACK SIN Nikita’s roots lie within the small snowboard, skate and surf scene in Iceland. Despite enrolling at a London fashion design school, in 1994 Heida found herself as one of the owners of a boardsports clothing store in Reykjavík. Inspired by the influence of boardsports on street clothing but with the lack of flattering cuts and female orientated lines, Heida began constructing a selection of handmade clothes for herself and friends. That clothing quickly drew further interest from outside her immediate circle. The focus for the winter lines was simple… clothes that technically performed but also looked good. What girl really wants to look like they’ve borrowed their big brother’s jacket and pants on the slopes?

Demand grew rapidly and in 1999 over a thousand pieces of unbranded designs were sold. The idea to market the brand internationally became a logical next step. The name Nikita was decided upon and the slogan ‘For Girls Who Ride’ was incorporated in order to define what Nikita was about and who it was for. In 2000 the international concept became a reality. “Before we launched Nikita, we spoke to some of the leading companies emphasising the need for an all-girl clothing brand but they disagreed… We were right!” laughs Heida.

“Before we launched Nikita, we spoke to some of the leading companies emphasising the need for an allgirl clothing brand but they disagreed… We were right!”

Some years later, more fashion led designs under the Nikita Selekzion label were launched to compliment the existing collection and technical snow outerwear lines. Last winter the brand stepped into hardgoods and introduced Nikita Snowboards designed specifically for the needs of female riders.

In an industry that does not suffer fools lightly, an underlining element that has surely been part of Nikita’s success is the fact that Heida is no slouch on a snowboard, skateboard or motocross bike, with a pile of trophies to back it up. Further to this, Nikita sponsors an international team of female action sports athletes that all help to promote the brand to a growing global trend of ‘girls who ride’. www.nikitaclothing.com

DANIEL CRAWFORD, ART DIRECTOR OF TWO American Crew Moisturising Shave Cream – As it says, a cream rather than a foam that gives a slightly luxe feel. Clinique Skin Supplies Liquid Face Wash – I use this a couple of times a week with a facial buff pad to help remove dead skin cells and deep cleanse. King of Shaves Kinexium Shave Oil – I’ve only recently discovered shave oils and it’s been a revelation. I get a 5 o’clock shadow by lunchtime and a dab of this before applying cream or foam helps with a closer shave, free from cuts and burns. YSL Touche éclat Pour Homme – Ok, this is the closest I get to make-up! Not everyday, but if I’m going out in the evening then a touch of this helps conceal the dark circles under my eyes. Chanel Allure Homme Sport – A rather attractive older woman once said to me “That’s how a man should smell.” I’ve rarely worn anything else since! Clarins Double Serum – I get really dry blotches of skin on my face but swear by serum now under my everyday YSL L’Homme Healthy Look Moisturiser. Caudalíe Premier Cru – Another tip from the Mrs to combat my dark under-eye circles. American Crew Fiber – obviously. Deep Heat Muscle Rescue Bath Soak – I love sport, especially cycling, so relaxing in a bath after 100km is vital to recovery. Bumble and Bumble Surf Shampoo – I also use this as a body wash in the shower. Babyliss Lithium Super Groomer – Because it’s just not cool to rock the 70s Magnum PI look these days! Pitrok Crystal Deoderant – My armpits break out in a sore rash if I use any scented deoderants. A friend told me about Pitrok’s natural ingredients and I’ve been using it for years now with no problems. I go for the pump rather than the roll-on. King of shaves Azor Razor – I really want a Merkur Futur but this is my go-to everyday soldier! Body Shop Shaving Brush – I’m vegetarian and this is one of the few synthetic (as opposed to badger hair) brushes on the market that does the trick. Little tip; always leave your brush to dry hairs facing down. 110
