hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? Having grown up in an artistic environment, with my Mum being a TV/film hair and make-up artist, I was always fascinated and obsessed with art, colour, fashion, beauty, and the amazing power of make-up and the instant transformations that you could create. My light bulb moment was when I was 14 years old when I started to experiment with make-up (on myself and my younger sister and her friends). I realised I had a natural flair with both colour and application and after that there was no stopping me. Are you self-taught or did you train? I assisted, I attended courses and I immersed myself in fashion and beauty magazines. Having an older sister helped. I devoured her Vogue, Honey, Cosmopolitan and Over 21 magazines, absorbing (and yes critiquing) the fashion and beauty looks of the day. But having a mum in the industry, I was also fortunate to be able to assist various friends and colleagues of hers on projects during the weekends and school holidays.
You grew up in London’s East End, has that had an influence on your work in any way? Yes. Coming from a real hard working, working class background, a strong work ethic was instilled into me from an early age, that you do not achieve your goals and dreams without hard work, commitment, drive, passion and maximising your talents. Who or what inspires you? I am always inspired by creative passion. Working with new photographers, stylists, hairdressers, and creatives. Joining a new team on a fledgling project and being allowed to contribute and bring to fruition amazing images and something new each time. Street styles, art and design, nature, urban youth and club kid energy, each of these have their own unique magic and I like to expose myself to this – life always inspires me. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? Over the years I have worked backstage on shows, but my real passion has always been in either the studio or on exotic locations, working with the creative teams to create magical, iconic and inspirational images. The energy when working on shows is amazing, but the magic and fuzzy feeling I always get when the models step onto set, the lighting is switched on, or when you are on location and the sun rises, the model radiates, and your art comes alive, amazing! How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? Fresh, flawless, radiant, inner beauty that enhances the subject without masking their individuality and personality. I came up through the era of the original supermodels and it was a privilege to work with them. They are such amazing women, with unique and individual talent that helped me to define and hone my talent to always be 100%

Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. OMG there are sooo many! Well, one day I was booked to do the make-up for an A-list Hollywood superstar and the call time was very, very early in her hotel room, as we had a full day of press junkets and a magazine shoot. So I arrive at 6.00 am to her hotel room and when the door opens I am confronted by my celebrity in full face of drag – thick and very heavy! She invites me into I WANTED the room to set up and DEVELOP fine TUNE says that she will be ready my ARTISTRY for me to start make-up in a moment. To say I was THAT my confused would be an understatement but as a WAS true professional I prepped, primed and applied (more) INDIVIDUAL to make-up, until my celebrity then said “this is so beautiful, I look and feel fabulous, thank you” – strange but true!

Over the years you’ve worked closely with many of the world’s biggest musicians and actors, how does this compare to working with models? Musicians and actors bring a different energy to a photo-shoot. On shoots with these talents it is more about promoting their unique individuality and talent, be it promoting their new music/ album or film/TV/stage project, so the approach to the imagery that you are working on and being asked to create is quite different than when

(models always come alone, even the supers!) who all usually have an opinion on the hair, make-up, styling and direction of the photography which can sometimes make the shoot long, hard and very‌ interesting! Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? On a personal note, my (late) mother defined beauty for me. As a divorced single mother with a career and four children, she always looked radiant and polished, with a flawless complexion, fire red nails and lips, and perfectly coiffed hair, her beauty always looked effortlessly chic. Also, confidence, humour, humility, passion and empathy are key ingredients that define beauty for me. A person can have perfect facial features, a smoking hot body, but without all of the above you are not beautiful to me. As one of the most in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? Lunches with friends and family, art galleries, mini weekend breaks (when possible!) and relaxing at home with my pets, books and partner. Also, my very self indulgent winter vacation at Christmas – one month of pure relaxation in either Mexico or Australia, two of my favourite countries in the whole world!

You’ve been working with The Body Shop for over a decade, how did that relationship come about and what are your plans for the future? I have been the international make-up artist and spokesperson for The Body Shop Make Up for 17 years now. I was approached by The Body Shop and Anita Roddick (founder, now deceased) and asked to consult on the make-up range, trends, product development and direction of the brand. I admire their values – they are against animal testing, activate self esteem, support community fair trade, protect the planet and defend human One SHOULD rights. I was so excited ALLOW and honoured so it was a COMPLACENT no brainer! I jumped on board immediately and it , but ALWAYS has been an amazing INSPIRED adventure and experience. For the future I am always looking ahead, never say never to new adventures and opportunities. With the world of fashion and beauty one should never allow themselves to become complacent and stale, but always stay fresh and inspired, following your dreams into new directions experiences. I still want to work within the fashion and beauty industry as long as they will have me and that clients keep booking me. I am always so excited to be working in an industry that I love so much. Also, I would like to eventually finish my make-up book that I keep adding chapter and verse too, but being such a perfectionist I never seem to be able to say it’s finished… yet!

WINTER BERRY . aw13 .
TELEVISION AND FASHION MAKE-UP ARTIST, BEAUTY PRESENTER, EXPERT AND WRITER ON ITV’S THIS MORNING, HEIDI SCARLETT KING, BRINGS US THE LATEST TRENDS IN ALL THINGS BEAUTY AND TIPS ON HOW TO DIY
O
ne of the sexiest new trends for winter is using the stunning berry and cranber hues seen now on the high streets for both eyes and of course lips. But don’t dust off tho 1980’s pink eyeshadow colours just yet – this new eye and lip look is definitely of the deeper berry variety! Here’s how to get my gorgeous go-to winter berry trend look.
STEP 1 FRESH AS A DAISY
As I mentioned last time, some of the best prepping products are from SUQQU and this month we start with my ultimate favourite skin primer right now, Bounce Barrier Cream. It’s pure luxury for the face with plenty of botanicals and nutrients to give skin hydration as well as creatin a beautiful velvet-like look to any foundation you apply onto it. A winter skin must! Next we apply a fantastic budget brand foundation from Superdrug B. range. My favourite is the B. Radiant Illuminatin Foundation. It contains Hyaluronic acid which instantly plumps up the skin. Apply your favourite concealer on top, and powder any hot spot areas particularly the eyelids.
STEP 2 HYPNOTIC EYES

To get your eyes looking BerryTastic, begin by applying Bourjois New Colour Edition 24hr Cream Eyeshadow in prune nocturne. Concentrate on the lash line and sweep up across the entire lid, blending seamlessly to the socket bone.

This lovely berry cream colour gives a crease-less base for this on trend look. Next use Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in The Vintage Vamp and sweep the enhance shade across the lid blending with a small soft brush. Then add the smoke shade to the outer corners of the lid and into the socket line, taking it up slightly higher to make it more visible. Blend the shades together with a soft tapered brush. Generously apply and smudge in Sleek Eau La La Liner Kohl Pencil in raisin into the top and bottom lash lines and blend. This pencil perfectly adds to the deep berry look and adds definition. Add more of the smoke shade colour from the palette on top of the pencil to smoke this look up. Bring the sexy back in with a black kohl into the inner rim of the eyes too, try Topshop Kohl in bolt. Why not add some feathery lashes to enhance this look, try Ardell Demi wispes.

STEP 3 BERRY POUT If you’re game for a bold eye and lip combo that will totally bring this look to its total trend status try Avon Ultra Rich Lipstick in Oxford wine and Deep Plum Lip Pencil to match. Avon has had an incredible brand overhaul recently and their new shades and colours are brilliantly on-trend. I adore their lipsticks as they are super moist and really do stay on.

CLARINS WATER ONE-STEP CLEANSER Just because you have danced the night away and you are exhausted that’s no excuse not to remove the day from your face, its also great for a quick make up re-do! Use this all in one cleanser for face and eyes and there’s even no need for a toner! Simply apply to cotten wool, sweep over the face and you are done! Choose comfort for normal-dry or purify for combination-oily. RADICAL INSTANT REVITALISING MASK A perfect pick-me-up when our skin is tired, sluggish and in need of brightening. Using vitamins A,B,C and F along with nasturtium extract it will maintain an optimum level of oxygen distribution and consumption. Apply a layer all over and wait a few minutes for the magic crackling bubbles on the surface of the skin. Wash away once the reaction has finished. The skin instantly looks brighter, with more radiance and ready for a night out. XEN TAN MOROCCAN TAN If like me you have always loved the smell of Xen-tan formulas then check this out. Using Morroccan oil you will be tempted to smooth this over toast and eat it. This is best applied with a mitt however, due to its instant dark colour it may take a little more effort in application, but it will give you an instant rich deep dark tan. Perfect if you’ve not had time to do a fake tan and your legs are pasty white. Smooth this on and you are good to go. W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 15 // D E C E M B ER 2013

THE LEGENDARY ARTIST, ILLUSTRATOR AND FOUNDER OF FACE路LACE, PHYLLIS COHEN, TELLS US ABOUT HER CAREER AND THE PRODUCTS THAT MAKE UP HER PRO MAKE-UP KIT What was your route into make-up? I studied Fashion Illustration at Art Centre in LA, California, a great art school which also has a magnificent photography department. The students were of such a high calibre that model agencies used to send their models there for test shoots. I made friends with some of the photographers interested in fashion and began to do make-up for their test shoots. Of course, being on the same campus was very handy for hounding the photographers to get prints from them. When I left Art Centre I had a pretty good portfolio which had sections for illustration and make-up work. My boyfriend, visionary photographer Jules Bates, had begun working for the LA Weekly. It was a newsprint magazine like Time Out and we began doing fashion stories for them. Within six months, they made Jules photo editor, which gave us free reign to do the covers as well. Jules and I developed quite a distinctive style which drew on our shared love of Guy Bourdain, Serge Lutens, Antonio (the illustrator), art movements such as Russian constructivism, and the LA Punk scene and we created quite a distinct visual style

together. We even started our own art Group called Artrouble, Jules did photography, David Allen graphic design, Margaret Wynne illustration, and myself Illustration and Makeup. I continued to work with other photography students from Art Centre on professional jobs when they graduated. In LA at that time the fashion scene was weak compared to the music scene and I soon followed some of the Art Centre photographers and moved to Milan for a serious fashion fix. En route to Milan I stopped in New York for a week and showed my portfolio around – I was 22 at the time. My make-up work was pretty adventurous and full of intricate details of illustration. In the early 1980’s NY fashion world, they thought I was mildly insane! I had quite a few people tell me “no one would ever want this type of make-up” and that I should “just stick with illustration work” but they all agreed Europe would appreciate me more. Several of the fashion and beauty editors I saw generously gave me contacts and told me to use their name. When I got to Milan I used the contacts given by NY editors and got in to see wonderful people. When I met with Anna Piaggi she asked me about the clothes I had painted in my illustrations. When I explained that sometimes I made clothes up in my head, she called Marriuccia Mandelli of Krizia, and bizarrely, I did a day of sketching designs for knitwear. The New Yorkers were right, the Italians were quite excited by my portfolio.

Lei magazine offered me a six page story of both illustration and make-up ideas photographed to my direction and I did two elaborate illustrations for Mondadori publishing group within the first month of my arrival.

In partnership with my photographer pals from Art Centre we showed my drawings for other beauty stories to editors and got busy turning them into published work too. I stayed in Milan from February until the beginning of August, then travelled up to London. Without knowing, I arrived in London at the best possible time for my career. 1982 was the height of the New Romantics – Steve Strange, Boy George, Annie Lennox, they all loved extreme make-up. I met a fantastic photographer, and later close friend, Robyn Beeche, who had been working with make-up genius Richard Sharah. Richard had just returned to his native country Australia and while I could never compete with him, I did fill some of the gaps in the market he left behind. It took a while for the industry to trust me, as I was considered a bit of a loose cannon. I had been doing quite well with the music circuit, then got a cover of the Observer magazine where I painted the shadows onto a face with make-up, a bit like a Tamara De Lempicka painting, and from then on, the fashion world trusted and accepted me. I never returned to Milan, London was the most exciting creative environment for me, and I felt I had found my perfect base for inspiration.

Which product do you never leave home without? I really love Dinair airbrush make-up in black charcoal. I have seldom used it as an airbrush colour, but love it as an eyeliner. It is very thin and densely black, so I can paint very thin lines that are super black. Great for fine liner details around the eyes or to define intricate body art. I put a few drops into the lid of an eye shadow and use my size 0 brush for tiny tricks. What was the inspiration behind Face•Lace? It was the combination of knowing how difficult it is to create detailed perfect make-ups and the desire to advance the techniques I developed over the last two decades to accomplish this in the shortest possible time. In the 80’s I was asked to do a series of 12 make-up designs for a company called Miners Cosmetics. A different make-up design was featured in a magazine every month. They would usually take four hours and the hair about six and we never shot anything before 6pm. The crazy 80s! But this was before photoshop so we had to get things perfect in front of the camera. The make-up company was very happy but they told me that some girls wrote in saying they could never recreate the make-up I did and felt frustrated. I never forgot it. Over the subsequent decades I became the artist people came to when they wanted something elaborate painted on the face or body. As digital imaging gained in popularity, I was competing against retouching companies who could offer a

similar final product. I had to find a way to be able to create fantastic paintings that could still be done within a normal shooting time. Inspired by a friend of mine who I used to watch do silkscreen printing I developed a system of using stencils. I thought, if I could lay down flat colours on the body, in the correct position for the base of the painting as quickly as possible, I could spend more time perfecting and adding detail. That is how I did the Pink Floyd Back Catalogue poster in 1995. I first did an illustration of each of the covers which would fit on a back, then broke them down into flat shapes of colour which could sit over top of each other to recreate the images. Each had between 6-20 stencils to create layers of colours. I spent over 100 hours cutting W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 15 // D E C E M B ER 2013

all of the stencils by hand and we pre-mixed all the colours. On shoot day, I had three wonderful assistants (Dani Guinsberg was one), and two were art school pals who were excellent painters. We managed to get all six bodies finished in six and a half hours, and the whole shoot was finished within our eight hour deadline. One day, I thought, instead of using negative parts of the stencils, as I had been for over a decade, maybe I could use a very delicate version of the stencil itself which could attach directly onto the skin and stay there. It took over a year of research to find the right combination of adhesive and vinyl and learn how to design using specific computer programs and machines, but eventually Face•Lace was born. Your plans for the future? I am enjoying developing ideas for Face•Lace more than I ever imagined. A few months ago I had to apply sequins to the body for a job. While laboriously applying them one at a time with tweezers and eyelash glue I thought this is crazy! So, stay tuned for a new product which allows maximum coverage of super reflective shapes in no time at all! Also, I’m just about to bring out new crystallised designs for Christmas and New Year 2014. My ambition for Face Lace is not to replace or stifle the creative spirit of hand done make-up art, but to offer a solution when something striking is needed and there is no time to create it. I love it when MUA’s use my designs and add their own touches of brilliance to take them to a whole other level.

i gang. So it’s all over and The Face winner has been crowned – massive congratulations to Emma Holmes and Naomi Campbell. It was such a fun show to work on and we were so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with people like Ellen Von Unwerth who shot the ID pictures. Also, working with clients like Masarati and Longchamp was major – it’s very rare that a model at the very start of her career gets to work with such high profile clients. For me, working alongside Max Factor on the show was major and having Caroline Barnes on board as a judge at the end was fantastic. She really understands what the client needs and as a fellow make-up artist it was an added support for me.

I got to do so many different looks on the show but I have two favorites. Firstly, the Masarati advert which was all about hyper polished skin. It looks easy but you have to layer on the products so that the skin really radiates light. I used light reflecting makeup as well as prepping the skin with different layers of moisturisers and primers. When it came to shading the skin, I stuck to foundation palettes as I didn’t want aggressive contours – it had to have a softness to it or would have looked too robotic. My other favourite was the classic beauty shoot we did with one of my oldest friends in the business, photographer John Paul Pietrus. is nothing as seductive as a red lip and ‘OMG’ Eliane has the best lips ever – they look like a rose. We used lots of bronzy colors on the eyes and as contours, so the skin had that Studio 54 look about it. I also used my Liz Martins Lash Enhance Select Individual lashes at the corner of the eyes to really lift and open them up. Then lashings of Max Factor Wild Mega Volume Mascara (my new favourite) and of course the pièce de résistance, a matt red lip using different lip mixes. It was defo a makeup moment for me! I flew off to Germany for the GQ Awards with the amazing Anastatsia. She has just recovered from a double mastectomy and has the most incredible fighting spirit. It was her first red carpet and performance, so a little nerve racking but she was on top form. We went for her classic bronze bombshell look with a little glitter sparkle on the eyelids. It was a great night with Kylie Minogue and David Beckham also in attendance, and with Robin Thicke thrown in we had a ball. To end my month I got to work with the amazing Emmy nominated actress Sheridan Smith for Cosmopolitan magazine and the new kid on the block Jenna Coleman from Doctor Who. She is just stunning – I predict big things for her. I’m off on a well deserved holiday to Goa so see you in February. Wishing you all a fantastic Christmas and an amazing 2014. I’m a “double cleanser” because I live in an urba I use Dermalogica PreCleanse to dislodge the city grime, and then wash with their Skin Resurfacing Cle
I have slightly sensitive skin and a heavy beard, so In warm weather I use Mario Badescu Shave Cream (when my skin is drier and more sensitive) I switch Aromatherapy Associates Refinery Shave Oil. I use th Harry’s Winston Razor, which boasts state-of-t engineered blades at an everyday price – sweet.
Let’s face facts, shaving is traumatic and knocks yo protection system (PH) off kilter. The best way to get you quickly is with a slightly acidic toner. I’m eternally gra guru Caroline Hirons for turning me on to Biologique R P50V (1970) Balancing Exfoliator. It’s a toner, exfoliato soother all-in-one. I follow that with a few spritzes of D Oxidant Hydramist and smooth on Mario Badescu H Serum for a flood of moisture to my thirsty skin. I seal in with a few drops of Rodin Olio Lusso Face Oil mixed of Dermalogica MAP-15 Regenerator powder. The perfect blend of plant oils containing the essential fatt needs to retain its elasticity and look it’s radiant best. MAP-15 powder supercharges the oil with highly p concentration to brighten and clarify, while the Magn Phosphate (MAP) battles free radicals and stimula collagen production for firmer, younger looking skin.

Every now and then, even the best maintained skin needs a little help to look it’s best. I’ve become a big fan of Veil Cosmetics Illuminating Complexion Fix. It’s a hydrating treatment, concealer and highlighter all in one easy to use click pen. Did I mention that it looks exactly like skin so you’ll never look like you’re wearing make-up? Well it does. I’m fair, so I use the Light 2N Neutral. In the shower it’s Cetaphil Skin Restoring Body Wash because it doesn’t strip my already dry skin. Before my skin is completely dry, I massage in CeraVe Renewing SA Cream. It gently exfoliates the dead skin cells that make skin look dull and blasts it with a ton of moisture so it looks smooth and healthy. It’s fragrance-free, so it won’t compete with your cologne. Excessive perspiration is a challenge of mine, so to ward off wayward wetness I use clinical strength antiperspirant. But, because they’re so strong, they can be irritating. I’ve had great success with the Dove For Men Clinical formula. It controls wetness perfectly and doesn’t give me a rash. My hair has always been fine, but that was ok because I used to have a lot of it. Now that it’s beginning to thin, I’ve switched to the Alterna Caviar Clinical System. I’m pretty amazed at the change in density of my hair and the overall health of my scalp. I style my hair with Oribe Rough Luxury Molding Wax. It’s got the firm hold of molding clay, with the touchable smooth finish of pomade – pricey, but definitely the best of both worlds. My warm weather fragrance is Prada Infusion D’Homme. It blends citrusy nehroli with vetivier grass for a fresh, clean herbal scent that’s perfect for balmy summer days. In cold weather it gets smothered and disappears too quickly, so as soon as I start pulling on my sweaters, I switch to Fresh Cannabis Santal. It has some unusual fruit notes (kumquat, dark plum) which you wouldn’t expect, but the wood and spice notes turn it into a warm, masculine scent with a definitely sexy edge.

Four years after the massive success of Ghostbusters, Bill Murray was back with this alternative festive feature. A ‘modern’ twist on the classic Dickens tale, Murray plays a wealthy but cold-hearted TV exec that exeperiences a series of haunting visions. This scene sees the pixie-like Ghost of Christmas Present dish-out some good old fashioned physical abuse to help him see the error of his ways.
