hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I was a young dancer and around the age of 16-17 and I decided that I really enjoyed the make-up and hair side to performing so as I had no aspirations to become a choreographer and most of the friends that where around me then either wanted to be in bands, dancers, performers and hair and make-up artists anyway so it’s not a surprise. My best friend at the time was already in his first year at hair and make-up college so I got the information and introduction from him.

W

Are you self-taught or did you train? I first went to Central College of Commerce in Glasgow and did my Hairdressing City and Guilds and Basic Beauty Make-up. They trained you in all fields i.e, period hair, wig making as well as quite an intense two years of hair work which included doing extra night classes in unisex cutting, blowdrying and tinting hair etc. You also were not allowed to take any days off in the first year or you were off the course and by the second had to have a position as a junior assistant in a hair salon which they called industrial release. You were also assessed every month to check progress – it was pretty intense but a lot of fun. Later on, once I felt confident in hair and gained a bit of experience, I went to Greasepaint in London to study TV, film and theatre make-up. I also found it really useful by doing it this way round with

hair first and always try and encourage young new assistants from make-up schools to get a couple of days or a saturday job in a salon as you learn a lot this way, especially in people skills which is important in our job when dealing with actors etc. A few years I then went to Neill Gorton’s studio in Chesham to learn more about sculpting, prosthetic application and materials etc which has come in very handy. Who or what inspires you? I am inspired a lot by old black and white movies i.e the hairstyles in The Woman (1939), Now Voyager (1942) its a different class of work that you don’t see much anymore. I adore the work of a now deceased hair stylist from the golden age of Hollywood called Sidney Guilaroff (IMDB him to see the amazing amount of work he did). I was also inspired by the glam rock era make-up artist Pierre La Roche and love all the Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane work on David Bowie from the 70’s. I also admire the hair work of Keith Wainwright from Smile. I’m a big fan of photographic and directorial work of Canadian-Italian artist Floria Sigismondi. I recently worked on the movie Into The Woods and had the privilege to work with a great dept and another inspiration of mine, hair and make-up designer Peter Swords King.

You have established yourself as a leading artist in the movie industry, was this always the area in which you wanted to work? Have I? Thats nice of you to say. Well I worked my way through various fields before I got there. From starting in fashion, then into music videos and editorial – doing hair, make-up or both. I was working with the likes of artist friends John Maybury and Baillie Walsh who ended up later going into movies and TV so around the mid 90’s I drifted over into that side of things too. I started as an assistant again, working my way up to supervisor and then designer but I didn’t want to run before I could walk so I have done it all at an enjoyable pace. It has taken me all around the world with people and places I could never have imagined. I still like to keep my hand in the editorial and music side of things when I can as a couple of the bands that I still do i.e, Placebo, Suede, are a bit more like family so its lovely to dip your toe in now and again. Its also important to me to not put myself in a box, so I like to work with other designers and not just on jobs I design. There are still a lot of new tips and techniques that I can learn from them.

Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? Back in the day I was helped by a great make-up artist/painter called Sarah Gregory who now is an amazing tattoo artist and I also owe a lot to a very dear departed friend of mine, Stewart Moore, who gave me my first break assisting him in music videos. The fabulous hair and make-up designer Christine Blundell, who has the best school in London, CBMA in Camden Town, still helps me out a lot by letting me use the school for tests, the odd prep job and is always passing my name onto producers and directors. I had a great time working with Chrissie and her team on the movie One Chance. There have been and are still many hair and make-up friends who pass on jobs to one another when the other cant do it, I do the same a lot myself, it’s nice to watch each others backs. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. Gosh there have been many and yes, I can’t tell and probably a lot I have completely forgotten by choice! How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? It’s changed in many ways but I’m not going to get into all the politics of times and wages etc. But it’s also changed in a way that there are now W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 17 // FEB R UA RY 2014

SIENNA MILLER THE GIRL HAIR COLOURIST

DONALD MCINNES a lot more schools and courses to choose from, so each year there is a super amount of hungry kids out there and sadly not all of them get through the door. A lot of them come out thinking they are already established but that’s not the case, there is a long way to go. This is what’s great about CBMA, they train the students to be trainees once they leave the school – it should be regulated amongst the crowd rooms where most of them seem to end up so that they can have their training assessed as it continues. A great junior can prove themself on a main bus it’s easier to see when they have worked with you for a year or two. You can trust them in another position and move them up. But as I said, not everyone gets that break. How is working with actors and talent is different to working with models? Well it’s different simply because the actor may be playing a role which could include a period look, a wig, teeth, lenses, prosthetics etc. This depends on the nature of the role and the final decision between, designer, actor, director and sometimes producers. This then results in camera tests to make sure all concerned are happy with what they see and how the actor feels. All this is done before you even start filming and then it’s about getting it done in the quickest and most comfortable time for the actor.

WORRIED ABOUT THE 32

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 17 // FEB R UA RY 2014

With model, fashion beauty/editorial work you tend to go with the flow and have a bit more time (and you’re not up as early!) – although these days the final result can be airbrushed anyway. But, it’s great and a privilege to work with both. You recently received Guild Awards nominations for both hair and make-up for your work, how does it feel to receive such recognition? Its lovely, I have Christine Blundell to thank for that. I had an RTS nomination before for drama Worried About The Boy that I designed, so I can only keep my fingers crossed that maybe this time we will win but who knows – we’re up against some amazing work by some talented artists. Any exciting plans for the future? I have three TV shows on the go, one in Pinewood, another in Manchester through February and March and the third being our eighth season of League of there Own at Elstree. I’m also with James (Corden) at The Brit Awards 2014, so I have a few shoots to do and TV appearances with James before the Awards. Then I am off to Spain to shoot a commercial and there’s talk of two film projects that might happen from April onwards. I can’t say much about them at the minute I’m afraid but it’s all good and with fun people which is important to me.

s a make-up artist, the awards season is my m favourite time of year. It’s when we see all o favourite Hollywood icons sporting some ser glamour and key trend looks. Here’s my three favou make-up highlights from the night and the how-to.

This is the go-to skin for red carpet! The coverage is flaw and the skin just illuminates at every camera flash. T an A-list look you must always start with the skinca regime. I adore the Priori Skincare Idebenone rang and since using it I’ve noticed an incredible difference look and texture to my face. Fine lines, dehydration pigmentation have softened. They are known to hav the most powerful anti-aging antioxidants on the mar I’m starting to see why.

The second part of the perfect red carpet skin is a go coverage and light reflecting foundation. Using SUQ creamy foundation with a damp sponge will give the m divine effect and the coverage is outstanding! Layer t areas with this foundation that need a bit more, like red or the eye area, with a soft brush. Enhancing a flawl base is down to great highlighting and shading! I’m lo Seventeen Instant Glow Bronzer – it’s matte, it’s a g shade and it’s under a fiver! Sweep lightly around the e of the face and build accordingly. A great all-in-on highlighter is ELF Cosmetics All Over Colour Stick. Bl on the top of the cheekbones, under the brow and l down the nose bridge to get that flash-bulb skin effe

2. BEST EYES ON SHOW – MILA KUNIS Red Carpet eyes don’t always have to be heavy to steal attention. I adore the blending and simplicity of these neutral tones on Mila which made them stand out for me. Matte eyeshadows have definitely made a big comeback recently and Urban Decay’s basics palette would do the trick for this look. Using shade naked 2, sweep across the lid, build with the shade Faint in the outer edges and blend in. Add definition with a dark long wearing black Kajal, like the Kiko Deep Black Kajal and add some glamourous lashes such as the Mister Mascara 2-in-1 set with a handy little box.

MILA KUNIS

3. RED CARPET RED – ZOE SALDANA It wouldn’t be an awards night without a red lip! Zoe’s was easily my favourite and this shade will be seen popping up in Spring 2014 trends for sure. Always prep the lip. This will ensure an A-list finish and a smoother application. Try Sara Happ Lip Scrub to plump your pout and eliminate dryness. OCC (Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics) have just launched a new Lip Tar. It’s a glossier and slightly more sheer version of the original. The OCC Lip Tar Stained Gloss is super long-wearing yet moist and the Meta shade is a duplicate to Zoe’s. This texture works perfectly for the red carpet with its sheen.

LIZ MARTINS AFTER MONTHS OF BEGGING AND PLEADING WE’VE FINALLY PERSUADED MAKE-UP MAVERICK AND REGULAR TWO CONTRIBUTOR, LIZ MARTINS, TO REVEAL THE SECRECTS OF HER KIT. LET’S TAKE A LOOK... What was your route into make-up? My route into makeup was very unconventional and some my find odd! I was 24 years old and a motorcycle courier. I fell in love with a fellow biker and found out he was a transvestite…. so being the broad-minded gal I am, I got into it and kind of taught myself how to cover a beard/ 5 o’clock shadow, contouring and blending – I got so into it that I thought I could do this as a career. By this time I was working for a Graphic design company and basically just jacked it in and did a 14 week course at The London College

of Fashion and ran with it. Inbetween I would do waitressing to make ends meet but I was determined – I never looked back. I assisted the wonderful Sharon Dowsett and Dick Page and after a year got signed to Camilla Arthur Agency, one of the biggest back then in London. The hard work has paid off. One product you never leave home without? The one product I couldn’t leave home without is… ah man, why can’t it be 2! I’m going to go with my Sisley Lip Balm as I can’t stand having dry chapped lips – but I also can’t live without mascara so I’d have to sneak my Chanel Sublime Infinite Length and Curl Mascara! You teamed up with Salon Systems to produce your lash collection, how did that come about? I had worked with Eylure for quite some time with Girls Aloud. I started designing lashes for the girls tours and that progressed into the design of their signature lashes. I then went on to head the make-up team for The X Factor in 2010. I became known as the ‘lash queen’ (not my idea) because of my extensive use of lashes. When the show finished the people at Salon System approached me as they saw potential for a pro range designed by a working make-up artist. I was very flattered and am very pleased with what we achieved. It has become a favourite in the kits of some of the worlds biggest artists – Lisa Eldridge is a huge fan of my individual lashes which is an honour.

There’ll be projects with british fashion designers, more TV and I’m on the road with music artists – exciting times. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for 19 years now – I really do love my job.

“ IT IS SAFE, BUT NEEDS TO BE ADMINISTERED BY SOMEONE EXPERIENCED WHO UNDERSTANDS FACIAL ANATOMY AND SO CAN PLACE IT PROPERLY.“

I’m 23 and I really want it – am I too young? An interesting question. Most of my patients are over 30, but I treat people who are 23... the benefit of catching deep lines early is prevention. If the line isn’t being formed as a dynamic line, then static lines won’t form. Everybody is different and there are no hard and fast rules. A good practitioner will be honest enough to tell you if they think it is too early and send you away. Is it safe? Could I get botulism? The solution contains a very small dose of the Botulism toxin but not the bacteria so the answer is that it is safe, but needs to be administered by someone experienced who understands facial anatomy and so can place it properly.

WORDS

RAC H EL WO O D

As make-up artists we subject ourselves to long hours on our feet, carrying heavy kit bags, repetitive arm strain and craning our necks in obscure directions. These actions can all attribute to unbearable pain. Rather than suffer any longer I’ve sought out some amazing New York City experts to help pull us artists back into shape and help with preventative defense.

OTHER TIPS AND TOOLS: EXPERT 1 – RACHEL BEIDER Massage Therapist and owner of www.massagewilliamsburg.com Twitter: @massagebrooklyn HOW MASSAGE HELPS Massage therapy helps by warming up the tissues through relaxing circulatory work, called Effleurage. Also by breaking up adhesions (commonly known as knots) using deeper, more focused kneading strokes. In addition I incorporate Trigger Point work to help lessen referred pain (think headaches caused by a point in the neck or shoulders). Massage should feel deeply relaxing but like it’s accomplishing something – “delicious pain, not scary pain”. EASY AT HOME EXERCISE • Grab a towel, post-shower, when your muscles are still warm. •K eeping your elbows straight and your grip shoulder-width apart, stretch your arms over your head •W iden your grip slightly to allow an even deeper stretch, letting your arms fall gently back behind your head.

All of the experts spoke with me about breathing. I’m sure many of you have found yourselves holding your breath and tensing shoulders while trying to apply a liquid eyeliner – I know I have! Stop, breathe and check your posture when working so your muscles get as much oxygen as possible to stay relaxed. Remember to stay hydrated. Foam Roller Foam rolling or the technical term called self-myofascial release helps to massage away trigger points and stiffness. Apply pressure to various areas and give a self massage while rolling on it. Each area should be rolled out for a minimum of 20 seconds at a time. Make sure you don’t forget to roll out under your arms pits to open up your shoulders. You can find them at www.TPTherapy.com Tiger Balm Rub this warming balm on sore and aching shoulders. It’s also great to rub on your temples for headache relief. Ice Pack Matthew says that 80% of all pain is inflammation. A cold compress on swollen muscles instantly does the trick before you reach for the ibuprofen. W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 17 // FEB R UA RY 2014

EXPERT 2 – ERIN MCFARLAND Yoga and Pilates Teacher www.retreatwitherinandalex.com Twitter: @ErinLMcFarland HOW YOGA HELPS Yoga stretches and releases tight, overtaxed muscles, then strengthens them eccentrically (in a lengthened state), for a longer, leaner tone. A good teacher will also help you find a more balanced posture and efficient movement using deep core muscles for support – muscles that are meant to work silently for extended periods of time, rather than the “big mover” muscles that are quickly exhausted. Yoga helps you to move more ease-fully, with the stamina to sustain activity through out the day. CHEST EXPANSION @ THE WALL • Stand facing a wall with your body directly up against the wall. • Reach your right arm out to the right at shoulder height. • Spread your palm open on the wall and make contact with your knuckles against the wall. • Keeping your arm and hand in place, turn your body to the left until you feel the stretch in the front of your right chest. • Come out of the stretch, by turning your body to the wall and slide your arm down by your side. • Repeat the exercise on the same side with the arm on a high 45° angle. • Switch sides. • If you do not feel the stretch in your chest, move closer to the wall as you turn, or change your arm angle. Keep the front of your shoulder drawing slightly away from the wall as you turn.

Happy birthday Kate Moss! Still absolutely fabulous at 40 – we tip our hat to the fashion icon and take a trip down memory lane with this clip from the hugely popular BBC sketch show French and Saunders. Despite having to deal with some very real ‘creative differences’ between the male stylist and make-up artist there’s no diva strop from our Kate here.
