hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? It’s a funny one as I have ‘played dollies’ for as long as I can remember and wasn’t ever that interested in anything else... I even dressed up the cat! I was in the pony club and terrible at events etc but won many rosettes for best turned out! I worked in a stable to earn my rides and I can tell you I was never given the prettiest pony... but by the time I had finished buffing and plaiting they looked incredible. I then trained in hairdressing but in my spare time I tried my hand at music, singing... well at least I think it was singing! I soon discovered I would not be making a living out of music so decided to do the hair and eventually make-up for the videos and performances. I had always loved make-up and had done many an experiment on myself, so it was pretty much second nature for me. I have to say, I felt much more comfortable behind the camera!

W

Are you self-taught or did you train? I had experimented with all the different looks through the ‘80s but I went for a couple of terms at Retford International College. I didn’t finish as I started working straight away. I managed to come across a busy photographer in Sheffield and worked for him regularly. Dawn Shadforth was shooting a pop video for our buddies The All Seeing I, it took off, she took off and I ended up travelling to London to work on pop videos. I definitely learnt on the job.

You are a long-time supporter of the The Prince’s Trust and have even created a lipstick TRUST for them. How did this come about? The Prince’s Trust is very dear to me. They gave me amazing support and a loan when I decided to become a hair and make-up artist. A few years later I was doing Kylie’s hair for the Royal Variety Show and I told her what the trust had done for me, she told her people, they told Prince Charles people and I actually got to thank him in person… amazing! Years later I was on a shoot with Pixie Lott for The Trust and told them if there was anything I could do to help then to shout out. They had just started a fundraising group for people within the beauty industry and invited me to join. At one of the meetings I suggested we made a lipstick called TRUST and they loved the idea. St Tropez’s Michelle Feeney was then running the fundraising board and she made it happen. It was an incredible project to be part of with everyone giving their time, talents and energy to it – we raised £80k. You grew up Sheffield, has that had an influence on your work in any way? It’s an incredibly creative place to be. I loved being part of the club and music scene there and meeting all kinds of interesting creative people. It really helped me to define what I liked – freely and without pressure. I had a really diverse set of friends and loved them being beautifully different in their own quirky way.

Who or what inspires you? Pat McGrath and Val Garland are true artists, I seriously love to follow their work – they are an incredible inspiration. I’m inspired by all sorts... fashion, film, books, photography. I love imagery, icons of all ages, people, music, gardening and just a good old bit of imagination. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? I have a real fondness for pop videos although don’t do so many now. There is so much freedom to create a fantasy or extreme beauty moment. Seeing people carry off with total confidence what you have created and to be part of a bigger team is always really inspiring. Now I seriously love working on beauty campaigns for space NK, translating catwalk looks into something that works for a certain woman... this gives me huge pleasure. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? I think the basis of my style of work captures people’s inherent beauty and brings that to the fore. Taking not only what is physically beautiful about them and enhancing that with whatever look we are going for, but also their character. I always get lots of clients saying “I love it, I look like an amazing version of me.”

Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Just one product... I can’t leave home without concealer, eyebrow pencil and mascara. If I had to choose one then it would be concealer, as I am pretty dark under my eyes and hate it. Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? I’ve been super lucky to meet and work with some fantastic make-up artists. I think Gemma Wheatcroft has been the most helpful in my career, she has assisted me on all sorts and kept me super-calm when I’ve been worried I couldn’t do something. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. We used to play a game with a singer called liberties. The glam squad would pick a number of how many times the artist had to make L shapes with her thumb and forefingers whilst singing and doing a dance routine. It was very, very silly but it used to make us giggle so much. We couldn’t believe how the artist could keep a straight face… pretty juvenille I know!

demand and competion is higher than ever now and in a way it has created a power to the people situation that I love. Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you I have to say I probably have a different person or thing that defines beauty daily! Today, its Sophia Loren… she’s a stunner, such a strong woman and funny! I think this is the most beautiful combo. As one of the most in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? I love hanging out at home with my son and two dogs, making a full english breakfast for him and his buddies, going for dinner with friends and watching The Voice! Or, skipping over to Ibiza to see my best friend Trish Whealan, she is a kundalini yoga teacher and a Reiki master. She gets me on the matt and then zaps me – a few days with her and im fully restored... I love it. And plans for the future? I am growing a little management company. It’s something I love and hope that I can help develop other artists. I am also working on a product which, fingers crossed, will launch in the summer. It’s really exciting to be formulating something again as I loved doing it so much with the Trust.

FASHION WEEK

PASTEL COLOUR WASHING One trend that stood proud throughout this seasons Fashion Week shows was the presence of pastels. Baby blues, pinks, limes and lemons were swashed across the lids or as a line of colour to provoke a girly softness to the face. My favourite of the pastel prettys was at Jonathan Saunders, and here’s how to cheat it.

1. My foundation ‘de jour’ right now is RMK Creamy Foundation. It’s a definite backstage favourite as it looks absolutely seamless on the skin and deliciously creamy and natural. Blend across the face with your fingers in downwards stokes or a brush and layer in the front part of the face for a bit more coverage. 2. Pat a touch of concealer in the dark under eye areas and any redness and eyelids. Try Paul & Joe Compact Concealer, it’s also great for on-the-go touch ups!

3. Some of the best shades to come out of Milan Fashion Week would have to be from Kiko Cosmetics Eyeshadows. For this look, I love their pastel pinks like 224 Satin Candy and 227 Satin Baby Rose Infinity Eyeshadows. Patting the lighter shade into the eyelid and sweeping the darker pink on top and into the crease will give a gorgeous two toned candy look to the eye.

What was your route into make-up? I was working as an Immigration Officer but had a background in fine art. I remember a friend remarking that I spoke enthusiastically about make-up. During a trip to Greece I read an article about Pat McGrath. That interview piqued my interest. I spent the next couple of years researching about the industry and visiting forums with established make-up artists. I considered a make-up course but the general response from seasoned artists was to train with an established make-up artist. I was referred to

Sam Chapman and the rest as they say is history. She taught me so much about the industry and has been a great pillar of support. I have been very fortunate and have achieved so much in this industry. This year will be the next step in my career and I am making 2014 count. I am really excited and sometimes cannot believe that I took a chance and now have a career doing something I absolutely love. One product you never leave home without? Mascara. Makes all the difference. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? The celebrity culture I believe has spawned a lot of up and coming make-up artists who believe this industry will be easy to break into and it’s all glitz and glamour. I think a lot of new artists are seduced by the ‘glamour’ and will do what it takes to break in quicker i.e reducing their rates considerably, undercutting the competition or working for free and putting us all at risk. We now have a situation where clients believe we will work for credit or they balk at our rate and find a cheaper artist.

PHOTO

As an in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? I rarely have time to relax. I am either prepping for new shoots, planning projects etc. I do love travelling and meeting up with friends though.

ebruary means London Fashion Week and this season I was heading the make-up from cool London designers PPQ. I have worked with them a few times over the years and it was great to be back! The show was called ‘Rockabella’ and we wanted to convey a ‘pale but interesting’ woman – skin was kept matte and pale using Bobbi Brown BB Cream which I am a huge fan of as I like the lightness of it. With black skin we just kept the girls to their natural beautiful colour. I then used a Bobbi Brown Touch Up Stick to conceal any blemishes. Brows were shaped and defined with brow powders and pencils as the trend continues whilst eyes were given a gorgeous nod to Bardot using Bobbi Brown Gel Liner. To finish off the look I went pale and shimmer glossy which we haven’t seen in a while what with the huge trend for matt or sheer lips over the last few seasons, so using Bobbi Brown Shimmer Gloss in Firefly it made the lips look 3D against the matt skin. I love this look as it’s also so wearable and liner is just a make-up staple in every woman’s make-up bag. So from LFW to The Hague! My team and I then flew out to Holland for the launch of a new Marks & Spencer flagship store and for the launch there was to be a catwalk show featuring the new collections – I had prepped the look a week before. The stylist and went through the press book and decided that with so many different styles of outfits, W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 18 // M A RC H 2014

from daywear to sporty, we should keep the makeup simple but still striking. I went for a beautiful luminous base with a really strong straight brow – the brow trend has moved on and we have now knocked out the arch. The eyes were kept very neutral with a coat of mascara, for the lips I chose a bronzey/orange lipstick which was just pressed into the lips to give a hint of warmth but very subtle. We also had a troupe of four gorgeous boys who were given the once over with a face massage using my favourite Weleda Skin Food and a little concealer magic with the Bobbi Brown BBU Palette. Once back we were straight into London Fashion Weekend which is in its second season and we were bigger and better this time, with designers

like Julian McDonald, Amanda Wakeley, Nicole Fahri and trend shows by The Outnet – it was a real fashion extravaganza for the general public to get a real taste of what it’s like at a show. Again, when designing the look, it was a collaboration with stylists and the BFC team. Maybelline are the official sponsers and I created the look using their amazing products. The look was Metal Nude – I used Maybelline Better Skin Foundation which gives great coverage and luminosity with staying power (integral with up to five shows a day!) and we blended into the eyes Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo Cream Shadow in Taupey Metallic Hues, which shimmered beautifully, then a little Maybeline Great Lash Mascara. I first used this when I started doing make-up 19 years ago and it’s still in my kit! I kept the lips nude with Maybelline Colour Sensational which has just come out in range of five great nudes. I was also there doing the super gorgeous Mollie King from The Saturdays who is the Maybelline Ambassador in the UK. Mollie was there to meet and greet fans and we also did some ‘how to get her look’ demos for the public – as you can see in the pictures Maybelline Better Skin looks amazing on Mollie! Well that’s it for this month… roll on March!!!

DR RENÉE HOENDERKAMP

LAST MONTH I OUTLINED THE PROS AND CONS OF WRINKLE RELAXING INJECTIONS. SO NOW THAT YOU KNOW THE ESSENTIALS, LETS LOOK AT IT IN MORE DETAIL – IT REALLY IS AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THIS STUFF!

Why do you say Wrinkle Relaxing T Ah, good question! Botox is a b botulism toxin. It’s a prescription o which means we shouldn’t make r articles that could seem to promot kle Relaxing Treatments you know

In fact this area, (known as the glabella), is the most common place it is used. Will I still be able to move my eyebrows? Definitely! If you can’t move your eyebrows you can’t make expressions. I’ve perfected a technique to get rid of the forehead and glabella lines without losing eyebrow movement, based on the facial muscles and the location of the injections – it’s my most closely guarded secret!

I have laughed too much and S IMPL E, S A F E, ELIABLE AND BRILLIANT, have small lines around my eyes… can you help? A WR I N K L E F R EE You can never laugh too much! I heard that it can be used to turn up the corners of my mouth… I always look sad. Absolutely. Down turning mouth corners tend to get worse as we age and can really add to that overall look of sadness. Two very small injections into the muscles pulling the mouth corners down can release them nicely… and banish that sadness. I can’t bear my turkey neck… it’s so ageing. You are not alone… remember those pictures of W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 18 // M A RC H 2014

Ulrika Jonsson… those stringy neck ligaments happen to the best of us. They are called platysmal bands and as they tighten with age they pull down the muscles of the lower face and create the jowls that are aging as well as being horribly noticeable. There is a fabulous remedy with wrinkle relaxing injections called the Nefertiti neck lift. Careful injections along the bands and under the jaw release everything upwards and reduce the jowls under the chin. Bye bye turkey neck. Is it true that my ‘gummy’ smile can be improved? Some people naturally lift their top lip high when they smile or laugh and show more gum above the teeth than usual. Well placed injections can sort this out for you. As with all of these treatments, select your practitioner carefully and make sure they are experienced and fully trained. It doesn’t matter how great my face looks, I sweat so much it ruins everything… can it help? Excessive sweating (or hyperhidrosis) is a real problem for some people and can be terribly distressing. Botox can be used to treat the condition and can last for up to 9 months. A series of very small injections under each armpit that takes just 15 minutes to do banishes this embarrassing problem. What about sweating on other parts of the body? The armpits are the most commonly treated areas but I have also treated palms of hands and soles of the feet. What about my face… I’m always shiny. The face is a tricky problem and the answer is ‘not really’. Because it would need small injections all over the face, it would be difficult not to affect facial muscles. As a result the only time it would really be used for the face would be if the problem was so severe that it inter-

fered with things like vision. If the problem is this serious, medical advice should be sought. Having said all of this, injections to correct the frown will also potentially minimise sweating on the forehead if placed correctly. I have been told that it can treat my migraine, is that true? Yes! Migraine treatment is one of many medical uses. A series of small injections through the hairline from back to front relax the muscles over the scalp and migraines are often successfully treated. Botox is in use medically for a host of things from overactive bladder, joint problems, neck spasms, cerebral palsy complications to migraine. Just more examples of how versatile and safe it is. Next month I am going to talk about Fillers. Please tweet or email your questions.

Taking inspiration from the British media’s suggestion that Kylie was in fact an alien, this futuristic video showcased her now notorious Fee Doran designed hooded white jumpsuit and crimson lip combo. The catchy ‘la la la’ hook made it one of the biggest selling records of all time and number one in Australia and every European country except Finland… the Finns don’t believe in aliens.
