hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? Seeing Boy George on the cover of Harpers Bazaar in the 80s and the incredible make-up he created for himself was really the moment when I fell in love with make-up artistry. I loved copying Vogue and Harpers Bazaar covers when I was really young – no one else in my family wore make-up so I would grab anything I could find hanging around to try and recreate them. I think it was always there right from the beginning, but seeing those beautiful images just galvanised my desire to be a make-up artist.

W

Are you self-taught or did you train somewhere? I would have to say I am a bit of both really. Courses can teach you different techniques, give you greater exposure to a variety of different styles and they can also help with focusing your natural abilities. I did an evening course in fashion and editorial make-up when I was eighteen, but the artist I am today is the result of years of trying different ideas, buying photography books, and learning from other artists along the way. I honestly believe the best kind of artists continue to learn and develop. Who or what inspires you? Art and photography books, exhibitions, galleries and artistry magazines are where I get a lot of my inspiration. In the 80s I was in awe of the Shiseido (Serge Lutens) and Lancome colour story artwork.

Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? I would have to say I prefer the dedicated focus of studio and location shooting. I find backstage for all it’s energy, a little like a conveyer belt. I like to be able to spend time on the look I am working on. Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? How would you define your style? In terms of period I love the 70s. Guy Bourdin photography, Roxy Music album covers, Studio 54, Debbie Harry. I love women to look strong and beautiful, Guy Bourdin’s iconic red headed models with their bruised-looking cheeks, hard eyes and super glossy lips... divine! Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? My house could be burning down and I wouldn’t leave without my eyebrows! Obviously my favourite is a Smashbox product, Brow Tech to Go, but generally, brows are my desert island application. Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? I really would have to give a massive shout out to all the assistants that I have worked with when answering this question. I could not have done the long hours, been a part of the wonderfully creative locations and created the work that I have without the brilliant, hard-working, dedicated assistants at the early stages of their career.

I take great pleasure in staying in touch with my assistants and watching their careers develop as they choose their path in artistry. It is truly satisfying and I love being able to say I was there when they were just starting out. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. I was on a hair shoot and one of the models was changed by her agency at the last minute, they sent through the replacement models Z-card so the session stylist agreed her based on the images he saw. So when the model turned up in a wig, the hairdresser didn’t think anything of it and asked her to take it off so he could get an idea of what he would do with her hair only to discover when she took it off that she had none! At the time it was a total disaster, but looking back I can really laugh with the team on the shoot, it was ridiculous and very funny. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? Well there’s definitely a lot more make-up artists. It’s seen as quite a glamorous career choice I guess which is not always the case, believe me. Make-up artists are now often expected to have some ability with hair, so this is something I have had to develop (actually I quite enjoy playing with hair). The big change though I think is the development of technology. When I started out there was no digital

photography and no photoshop, so your make-up skills had to be flawless and models couldn’t turn up to work with spots. I think this has put me in quite good stead as an artist. Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? If you look at all of the most iconic images down the decades it isn’t so much the subject, but the way they are lit that creates the illusion of beauty. Light conveys life, vitality, intensity, depth, these are the things that define beauty for me. As one of the most in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? I am mad about cooking... after all a girl’s got to eat and I find the quiet focus of preparing a dish or baking a cake leaves me feeling peaceful. I love to swim and be in the water in general. When you are doing lengths all you are is your breathing and your steady movement through the water. You are the National Make-up Artist for Smashbox Cosmetics UK, how did that come about? It’s interesting because I’d been using the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer in my kit for years. I picked it up when I was flying through LAX on a job, but I had no idea you could buy it in the UK. I originally bought it because I loved the fact it was the brainchild of a photographer who wanted skin to look more beautiful while shooting. To me a gorgeous complexion is the bedrock of beautiful make-up, so I thought I would give it a go. I am

still using it on location to this day. So when I got the opportunity to work at Smashbox it seemed perfect to me. The back story to the brand is awesome and I couldn’t work with a product that I didn’t believe in 100%. And plans for the future? I have no idea right now, can you make plans? I love product development, I make my own lipsticks for each shoot I do, and I believe in the need to grow, develop and improve... so who knows what the future may hold?

here’s no mistake that this season the bold lip shades are doing all the talking! From New York to Milan the one make-up trend for 2014 that stood bright and strong was the ‘Bold Lip’ look. Here’s my 3 favourite hues to have this summer.

FRESHLY SQUEEZED LIPS As seen at DKNY, John Galliano, D Squared2 SS14. The Bright acid orange lip was positively the colour de Jour for many designers this season and since this juicy explosion, many a high street brand has emulated it. One of the best Lip products to launch recently has been Revlon Colour Burst Matte Balm Stain Shade 245 Audacious because of its creamy texture and highly pigmented colour. These big crayons are super easy to use as they go on like a big lip pencil, stay on like a Matt stain and feel like a creamy lipstick. If you want to take this lip look to sexy Studio 54 style, opt for a bold glossy lip. L’Oréal Extrordinaire Color Riche in Orange Tempo will take the look to a whole new level of hot. Wear the look with: Bushy Brows, Fresh dewy skin and chocolate eye kohl pencil smudged into Lashes.

intense. To take this trend to a fresh glossy place that can still be worn with a bold eye, then Urban Decay Lip Naked Lip Gloss Lovechild is divine. Taking this look straight from backstage try YSL Babydoll Kiss and Blush in Rose Libre for that pastel chalky pink‌ handy that it doubles as your blush too! Wear the look with: A Black Gel Feline flick eyeliner, Loads of Mascara and Matte.

ELECTRIC REDS As seen at Altuzarra, Monique HLuillier SS14 Like the best pupil in High school, the bright red lip has a 100 per cent attendance rate down every catwalk season! So, whether you take a full force approach or a more stained, muted version, there’s far more reason to dare to go red. Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet 03 Hot Pepper has to be my favourite red from the high street right now. The creamy texture of these matte liquid lips are so on trend and this shade has the power to stop traffic! Topshop Lipstick in Rio Rio is another winner of the red variety. The on trend way to wear this is to apply and then tap into the lips with a finger like a stain. Wear the look with: brushed, glossy brows, dewy skin, peachy cream blush and minimal eye make-up.

“I hope the book will act as a catalyst for the next generation of make-up artists to really explore this male make-up genre further.” – David Horne, Contributing Author

50

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 19 // A P R I L 2014

Born from David Horne’s desire to portray male make-up artistry in a non-feminized manner, The Art of Male Makeup is an exploration of the idea that men can be cosmetically adorned whilst still retaining their inherent masculinity. As the director of the project, Horne brought together a dream team of beauty industry know-how that included hair stylist Spob O’Brien, Mark Bowles and photographer Daniel Ellyot Moore, “I directed the project with Mark and Spob as we all bring a different experience dimension and this was important to have a triple perspective not one artistic view” . Perhaps surprisingly, Horne chose not to design make-up himself, instead turning to the skills of Mark Bowles, “I selected Mark Bowles to head the make-up through the book and not myself so that I could create a portal of awareness of new talent as it is so difficult for new talent to emerge in he industry dominated by renowned artists”. The powerful visuals within the book, representing the beauty of the individual through themes of the past, present and future, serve as a creative spark that will encourage the beauty industry to rethink the way it presents masculinity and the male image in the future, “I hope the book will act as a catalyst for the next generation of make-up artists to really explore this male makeup genre further, and if in doing the book we have created that movement then I am proud”. The Art of Male Makeup is available from April 2nd 2014, RRP £25.

What was your route into make-up? At school I would wear a MAC Brown Blusher as a Bronzer. I think I might have overdone it a bit especially when I look back at the photos. Well, that the 90s for you. I’d always been a beauty addict and would do my friends make-up before we went out, however, it was nothing like a MAC make over by one of their artists and I would often think ‘I want to be as good as them’. After University, I started working at the Aveda shop in Brighton. The MAC shop was two doors down

and when the girls walked past with their amazing make-up I thought ‘I want to be a MAC girl.’ There were no jobs going in the Brighton store so I moved up to London and worked on the Selfridges counter. You’d think it would be challenging working with 40 other MAC makeup artists on the biggest counter in the world but it wasn’t. I made some great friends there, some of them are still my friends today and are really successful freelance artists. We all help each other out and pass jobs on as there is a mutual trust between us. It was there that I learnt how to apply make-up to black skin and work with amazing colours. One minute you could be applying make-up to a performer who was going on stage that night and the next serving a 60 year-old woman who wears Impassioned lipstick. I love the diversity of that and that’s where my colour addiction began. I then started assisting at fashion week and my freelance work took off. I had to call in sick to do the Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign! After that I thought maybe it’s time to leave and and I got my first agent. One product you never leave home without? Personally I always carry a Clinique Chubby Stick in my bag and the shade I have is Chunky Cherry. It’s totally foolproof – you could even put it on without a mirror. Even if I haven’t had time to apply much make-up it makes me feel polished and fresh and really brightens up my face.

How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? I think the emergence of the online magazines and video has increased our work load which is positive. People love to see ‘how to’ and ‘behind the scenes videos’ so we are now presenters as well make-up artists. You can become successful on YouTube in a relatively short space of time. How do you find time to relax? My work is very seasonal. There are busy times and then there are quiet times too. It’s hard to have a routine as you never know if you’re going to be around for something. I love to eat healthily. I read about it and watch recipe demos online. I have a juicer and a high speed blender, next on my list is a dehydrator. I spend a fortune in Wholefoods buying superfoods like Maca and Bee Pollen. I love going to the gym, spending time with my husband and seeing friends and family. Hanging out with my Mum and her dog Millie.

ello everyone, I’m Rachel Wood, TWO magazine’s new Travelling Editor. Welcome to my new page! I’m a makeup artist who spends a lot of time living out of my suitcase and when I’m not, I’m back home in New York City. I’m always getting asked what are my favourite beauty finds and hot spots from the places I travel to and where I live, so I thought it would be fun to share it with all of you. This issue I am reporting from the tip of the Sunshine State – Florida, USA, in South Beach, Miami doing the make-up for a huge press launch for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 50th issue. A big team of a dozen make-up artists and hairstylists were set up in the top tower suits of the Fountaine Bleu Hotel [ www. fontainebleau.com ] to get 25 of the magazine’s models red-carpet ready. Models have included Chrissy Teigan AKA ‘Mrs John Legend’, Emily Ratajkowski (Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines and W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 19 // A P R I L 2014

I had the pleasure of working with three beautiful blondes – Samantha Hoopes (check her out in her latest Guess adverts), Hannah Davis (a model with the most breath-taking eyes I’ve worked on) and Genevieve Morton (an SI favourite as this is her 5th year featured in the mag). The press junket was fun but the hours very long. The models schedules were jam packed full of events including pool side interviews, a dance party featuring Pitt Bull and a charity volley ball match.

Want to know the skin secrets of swim suit models? Here’s a list of my top make-up picks: Aquaphor This wondrous healing balm is awesome for sunburn. Besides cooling the skin, it helps prevent peeling. It also leaves a glossy sheen on the skin whilst hydrating. Also fab for lips and I mixed it in with lip pencil to create a lip stain. Clinque’s Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sun Block is a necessity – especially somewhere like Miami where the temperatures average 80F/26F! I try not to use anything less than 50 for the face. Madame LA LA is my new favourite fake tan mousse. No stinky smell. It actually leaves your skin scented like coconuts, it’s hydrating and

There are many manufacturers of fillers but I mainly use those from two of the biggest companies; Galderma who make Emervel and Restylane and Allergan who make Juvederm. The real skill of your doctor is choosing the righ type of filler. This is something that will tell you and it comes down to as your non-surgical doctor. What areas can be treated? Does it hurt? The treatments are quick and there is slight discomfort but it is bearable. The fillers contain a local anaesthetic so the area being injected quickly numbs to minimise the discomfort. For many treatments I now use a cannula so the only pain is the first tiny needle hole and then the cannula is fed in to the area being treated. The benefit of using a cannula is only one needle hole, no bruising, less swelling and less pain. Will I be ‘puffed up’? Not if I’m doing your fillers! Seriously, clients are often worried that they will look ‘freaky’ or have ‘trout pout’. My ethos is that people should never look at you and think that you’ve had fillers, they should just think that you look lovely and not be able to put their finger on why. How quickly will I see the result? Straight away! And then it gradually improves over a couple of weeks. There might be a little swelling to start and this will go down over the first day or so and the filler will attract a little water. Over the two weeks after insertion the filler will settle into the surrounding tissues and the result will improve. You will see those lines lifted out, noses straighten or cheeks built as soon as the treatment is complete. Lips tend to swell more than other areas so don’t be alarmed if you think the result is too much, it won’t be if a skilled practitioner has carried out the treatment.

The film focuses on Saint Laurent’s personal life and relationship with his business partner and lover, Pierre Bergé.
