hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I moved to London in early 1987 so I guess that’s when I called it! I didn’t have a back up plan, I just thought I’d give it a shot.
W
Are you self taught or did you train? I’m self taught. I figured that as I could paint and draw I’d just be adapting technique I already had to a different medium. Who or what inspires you? The usual… Everything! Books, films, music, art, photography. I try to avoid referencing existing fashion and beauty work, because I think if it’s really incredible, it’s been done and you’re unlikely to improve on it. Of course in this business you invariably find yourself with a brief which requires just that, so you have to work a bit harder to not have it look like a slavish ripoff. Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? I’d always rather be on a shoot. I can handle backstage but I don’t enjoy the madness. Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? How would you define your style? I don’t think I can define my style. I’ve been doing this for so long in so many different forms, shows, shoots, product design etc, that I’ve covered a lot of ground. I’m also keenly aware that make-up

doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It needs a face, a context, clothes and hair or even simply a customer. All make-up is a collaborative effort. As far as period goes, I got into make-up in the 70s and 80s so that DNA is always in there somewhere, but I’m happiest when it feels contemporary. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Lip balm. Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? I never assisted anyone, but I’ve been inspired by many such as Linda Mason, Stephane Marais, Phyllis Cohen and Richard Sharah. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry related story. I was on a location job in the Ukraine and I went to the loo at lunch and the crew left without me. Cellphone didn’t work, no way to contact anybody so I just sat back down and carried on eating, and tried not to take it personally! How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? Good grief, how much time do you have? I’ve been doing this for twenty seven years so I’ve seen some big changes. The massive increase in media is staggering. There used to be a handful of photographers and reporters backstage at shows, now it’s an army, including TV and all kinds of W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 20 // M AY 2014

social media, bloggers etc. It’s got to the point that it’s hard to do the actual work that they’re supposedly all there to see. Digital photography has also really changed the fashion landscape, people work in very different ways and clients often want to see finalised, or near finalised work at the end of the shoot day which I don’t think is such a great idea. I prefer to live with the idea for a little while and then look at it again and decide, just as you might with painting or creative writing. There is an air of impatience and a kind of desperate need for instant gratification which I find exhausting. Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? No one thing. Beauty is everywhere and often it sneaks up on you. That said, I like to be outside as much as possible, I love a camping trip! As one of the most in demand artists, how do you find time to relax? I don’t work as much as you think! Seriously, I’m very lucky to be able to work with a few people that I really trust and admire rather than doing every job that comes along as I did for many years. I’m not that big on the beach holiday, lying around kind of relaxation. I’d rather be active, out with the dog or riding my bike, painting, going to the theatre or doing stuff in the garden. One downside of this job is the unpredictability of the schedule, it’s hard to plan stuff in advance because you never know if you’ll be in town.

You’ve worked with Shiseido since 1997 and are the Artistic Director of Shiseido The Make-up, how did that collaboration come about and what’s it like to work with such an historic make-up brand? It’s like any long term relationship, amazing, frustrating, rewarding and very complicated. Shiseido approached me to succeed Kevyn Aucoin on the INOUI line which I later completely redesigned as INOUI ID, then I got the global job in 2007. I feel that I know the company well and they can depend on me to do my best for them. It’s not always easy but it’s been, and continues to be, a great collaboration. I’m very proud of the work we’ve done together. And plans for the future? More colour, new faces and places. More of my own photography, painting and drawing. I’m still learning and having fun.

he ‘No Make-up Make-up’ trend has not only swept the catwalk but also the social media world, with countless celebs posting makeup-free selfies. Even the big names like L’Oreal have jumped onto the trend, with their recent campaign showing an almost bare faced Cheryl Cole. Here’s my take on how to create the perfect no make-up look.

This is the most important factor in creating the perfect no make-up look as there’s no distraction from other facial features. The skin has to be flawless, but entirely natural and clean, so it’s important to start at with skincare. Using a double cleansing skincare method, sweep B Pure by Superdrug Micellar Water on a make-up remover pad across the face thoroughly. It’s a fantastically gentle way to remove any make-up and residue. For the next step I recommend using Prevage Anti-aging Boosting Cleanser for an incredibly clean and revived looking skin that will also be protected from signs of ageing.

NATURAL GLOW With all the focus on a beautifully bare face it’s crucial to create a healthy glowing skin. So, after cleansing we need a lifting and hydrating serum for the skin. My pick is Prevage Anti aging and Intensive Repair Daily serum. This gives the skin the ‘like your wearing make-up’ look as it visibly improves the tone and texture. Next moisturise with a super dewy and fresh moisturiser like L’Oreal Age Perfect Cell Renew. Once the skin looks in order, it’s time for the minimal make-up to begin.
CONCEALER – OUR BFF Using the less is more approach to this look, we focus on just correcting the imperfections we see instead of making the skin look completely even with full foundarition. Using a creamy concealer like MAC Pro Conceal and Correct Palette, we lightly cover any blemishes, dark circles and veins on the face with a small tapered brush.
TIP The most important tip here is to go back and blend out any concealed areas to make sure they are invisible. Next, set the concealed areas with a transclucent powder. A classic is the Cornsilk Loose Powder. Use a medium tapered brush, but not on the whole face as we want to keep the main part of the skin radiant and dewy.
34
W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 20 // M AY 2014
INVISIBLE COLOUR – SUBTLE SHADING Lightly, with a medium sized angle brush, add touches of a cream shader such as Elf Cosmetics Contouring Blush and Bronzing Cream in St Lucia into the corners of the face. With a clean fluffy brush go over areas you have covered to blend away any excess product so it’s invisible to see.
TIP Using cream textures will give the most seamless and subtle look when adding colour.
NO COLOUR COLOUR Our favourite cream highlighters can now be found in MAC Cream Colour Base Palette, which was seen a lot at this season’s fashion week. Using the colour Hush, warm up on your fingers then apply across eyelids, along the cheekbones and under eyebrow arches. Then with a soft brush blend this away untill it’s just a soft sheen on the skin.
TIP It’s important to not use blush and lip colours with this look as this will create a made up effect.
BROWS AND LASHES Brush up brows and add a slight bit of colour where needed. Curl the lashes thoroughly as this will give an open eye effect. Then with a clear eyebrow gel, set the brows and the lashes in place. I like using Seventeen Clear Definition Mascara. To finish, sweep across the lips Vasoline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips for a ‘dewy’ and not ‘deathly’ no colour lip! W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 20 // M AY 2014

What was your route into make-up? I left school at 18 and went the usual safe route into uni to study Child Psychology. I hated it with the fire of a thousand suns so I left. I took a year out to figure out what I wanted to do and had a job in a video store because I loved film. I was researching costume design courses when I came across a make-up course and something just clicked in my head. I studied at a local college for two years and that was that! One product you never leave home without? Personally, its Embryolisse Baume Secours Balm. In my kit, its my Make Up For Ever Flash Palette. I would probably have a nervous breakdown on set if I discovered I had forgotten it.

KEITH CLOUSTON, BRUCE SMITH, AMY FAITH JAMES BROWN PAUL WARING, MURAT OZKASIM How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? There are probably about five billion more makeup artists in the UK alone! Or maybe it just feels like five billion billion! Ha ha! The digital age has changed it completely. Self taught make-up artists are so much more common because of the amazing access to information we have. Rates are much lower though and the incidence of ‘free work’ (which you should never do unless it’s editorial or test shoots!) has become far more prevalent. On the plus side, product development is the best it’s ever been and the dawn of HD has made all make-up companies up their game giving us far more choice. As an in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? My absolute favourite thing to do when I get the time is to sit on my sofa, with my cats, drink hot coffee and binge watch a tv show on Netflix. You have to make time for yourself otherwise you would go crazy. Even if its just 30 minutes.

appy Springtime TWO readers! I’ve had a truly wonderful month back in my hometown of New York City working on a few exciting projects. I’m a little obseesed with Game of Thrones right now so it was a lot of fun to spend a week working with a few of the actors from the show at various red carpet events and premieres – there was even a huge dragon out side of Lincoln Center for the show’s premier. So since I’ve been home I thought that this month I would talk about one of the mega make-up sections of Manhattan, Soho. This area of the city is a beauty junkies paradise boasting flagship stores for some of the world’s hottest brands such as Origins, MAC, Space NK, Benefit and Aveda to name a few – and all within walking distance of each other. The Soho Bloomingdales store has an incredible beauty floor and there are gazillions of places to get pampered too such as Haven www.havenspa.com and Bliss Spa www.blissworld.com W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 20 // M AY 2014

So are cheeks easy? Will it look weird? Never weird, and yes cheeks are simple but everyone has different needs. Some patients want to accentuate their existing cheek bones and so make their face more triangular. Older patients lose volume in the mid cheek as fat pads migrate southwards and just replacing this volume makes a major difference to that aged and tired look. Again it’s about replacing and enhancing what you have, not creating something that just looks fake. Can you remove chin dimples and lines? So easily… just carefully placing filler underneath the offending dimple or line like scaffolding lifts it out beautifully and is relatively painless. I’ve heard acne scars can be treated? True? Not many people do this treatment but I have had excellent results with deep acne scars. Using a very light filler and placing it carefully underneath can make them a thing of the past. The thing is, they are unpredictable because of the scarring underneath and only by trying it will you know if it is going to work. When it does its brilliant, when it doesn’t it’s disappointing but you haven’t really lost anything. I hate my wonky nose… any hope? Yes, I have found straightening noses with filler really straightforward and the results are excellent. Remember; it will need re-doing after a year but is a great non-invasive solution.

You may have seen the hype recently around new fat busting machines, with the likes of Coleen Rooney et al singing their praises. It seems they are here to stay and market leading machine 3D Lipo combines Cryolipolosis to freeze and destroy fat cells and so banish those tough areas that the gym isn’t beating, cavitation to break down cellulite and radio frequency to tighten skin that has simply stretched with age or is loose after dieting. The results seem to back up the hype and a new threedimensional approach to overall body sculpting seems to have arrived in the UK. Dr Renée will be introducing the treatments in her clinic from June 2014.
