hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? As a kid I had no idea that you could be a make-up artist and it never occurred to me that I could make a career in make-up and hair. The desire to beautify obviously started young though as I was always bribing my sister in order to play with her hair and to give her Barbie dolls feather cuts. I went to university and studied History with English Literature but it didn’t seem right and after a year I moved to London. I applied for a job at The National Theatre, in the wardrobe department and immediately knew I was at least in the right environment. I moved up the ranks and by the late mid 80s I was back in Scotland working as a wardrobe assistant on the soap Take The High Road. The make-up department, having prepped their artists at base, would turn up on set and ‘Braun Independent’ their own hair! Now that looked a lot more glamorous. I knew then that I wanted a department change.
Tell us a little more about your training. I learned on the job. Theatre provided the best training for innovation, speed and creativity. I found a wonderful book on tv, film and theatre make-up by Lee Baygan which became my holy grail. I would always multi practice new challenges and techniques on myself first to get them perfected before working on an artist. Training and learning never stops, the day you think you know it all is the day you will be proved wrong.

Where did you grow up? Did it have an influence on your work in any way? My teens were spent in Scotland and in the early 80s we would try and replicate the looks of our heroes David Sylvian, Pete Burns, Toyah and the Blitz kids. This required a lot of eyeliner, foundation, blusher, mascara, shaped eyebrows or no eyebrows and tons of hairspray! Small town Scotland was bemused. When I designed the hair and make-up for the 25th anniversary Virgin Atlantic commercial I put a team together that had grown up through the 80s and we had the best time reliving all the trends from our teens. Who or what inspires you? I’ve always loved classic Hollywood; the movies and stills from that time are magnificent. The lighting may have been equalled but never bettered in my opinion and they made skin look real and flawless by turn without airbrushing. The studio portraits shot by amongst others Ruth Harriet Louise who ran MGM’s portrait studio from 1925-1940, Irving Lipman, Roman Freulich and Lazlo Willinger are quite exquisite. (Look them up as they are incredibly gorgeous and often very current in their feel) I can see the influence of these photographers in all the modern greats from Avedon and Irving Penn through to Meisel and Mert and Marcus! The early make-up pioneers were incredible. In researching period detail I discovered the Westmores, a make-up family dynasty. Perc Westmore in particular is an inspiration as he was responsible W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 20 // M AY 2014

for taking Bette Davis from ugly duckling to sensational swan in Now Voyager and ageing her through the decades in Mr. Skeffington. He made Joan Crawford magnificent in Mildred Pierce and Ingrid Bergman breathtaking in Casablanca. Perc was also responsible for The Munsters with the gorgeous Yvonne de Carlo. You’ve worked in most areas of the industry, do you have a preference for backstage, film/theatre or editorial? From fashion shows in Milan, Paris and London, to working with Hollywood greats in film and theatre. Advertising campaigns for international beauty brands and mad editorial. How to choose? It is a wonderful career. I love creating a backstory for an artist and finding elements to assist their characterisation as much as finding reference as a starting point for a beauty story or creating a look for a campaign. Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? How would you define your style? My make-up style sets out to create an illusion but it is not a mask. I try above all else to bring out the beauty in my subject and keep the finish polished and sleek. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? Hand sanitiser (smiles). Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? I was lucky enough to work with the incredible Rino Carboni. He was Fellini’s make-up artist on Roma, Satyricon, Amacord and Fred & Ginger amongst many other great films. He showed me incredible techniques to use when

shooting for black and white film which turned everything I thought I knew on its head. Mentioning no names of course, do you have a funny industry related story you can share? Mmm… let’s see. Shooting a Christmas commercial in a very sunny August. Mix in twelve hot reindeer, a load of fake snow, a boy band sweating in winter garb and a growing amount of reindeer poop. Two of the boys ended up hitting the deck after sliding though some reindeer poop ending in a messy heap on the floor. You had to see the funny side (unless you were in the wardrobe department!!!). Also no animals were harmed! How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? Well, for a start, more people are aware of its existence. The internet and reality shows have democratised the industry as never before which I see as a positive. However, on the downside, Photoshop has given some people a license to be lazy and get their work corrected by a technician in post. I see post production as a great tool but one that should be used as a final assistant and not something that allows sloppy work. A one week make-up course can be a great starting platform but obviously it takes more than a week to be able to call yourself a make-up artist. I advise my assistants to take their time to work their way up and learn the craft of make-up. This is a great career and if you invest in it by pursuing proficiency then you’ll have longevity.

Which person (or thing) defines beauty for you? Beauty is a combination of things which, when they come together, warm the soul and please the senses. Beauty can be found in all of us and all around us. I have worked with some truly beautiful people throughout my career. I am in constant admiration of Helen Mirren and working with Marisa Berenson who I had admired since seeing her in Cabaret and Barry Lyndon was a genuine pleasure. Both these women are proof that Beauty has no age limit. As an in-demand artist, what do you like to do to switch off and relax? For me nothing beats revisiting a classic movie – some I can watch over and over again. I’m currently rewatching Chinatown and Harold and Maude. I love to get stuck in to a good book or gorging on a great box set. Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men of course have stunning period detail to enjoy as well. I can lose myself in the garden for hours and a good bit of DIY is always a great way to refocus. I’ve just floored the attic! I know! I impressed myself! And plans for the future? Yes, a very exciting project coming up called Expert Beauty Face with make-up artist, Sara Raeburn and photographer, Clare Park. We will launch our site later this year and plan to offer a different perspective to what is currently on offer. You can start following us now at www.twitter.com/xpertbeautyface

t’s a trend that just keeps on coming back. We’ve seen every hue of blue hit the runway and in turn see the hottest make-up delights tempting us to try this beautiful, bold eye. Here’s the best picks and how to wear it without looking too circa ‘85… M I D N I GH T B L U E This style is perfect for a change from the charcoal or dark brown smokey eye, as it adds an extra mystery to the standard ‘after 5’ eye look. Start by blending a long-wearing coloured primer across the eye (my choice is Smashbox Limitless Cream Shadow in Sapphire). This creates a quick and bold smokey eye with different depths than just eyeshadow alone. Add a little under the eye through the lashes as well with a stiffer brush to intensify the look. Work the darkest shade from MAC’s Veluxe PearlFusion Shadow palette in Bleuluxe along the lash line of the eyelid and sweep upwards to the crease. Add the midnight blue shade lightly with an angle brush underneath the eye and blend the edges away. Highlight under the brow bone with a light coloured concealer to draw attention to the eye as well as drawing in a black kohl liner into the waterline. Add your favourite mascara – I love Rodial GlamoLash.

ELECTR IC EYE S Give your eyes a shot of bright for SS14! Just by adding a fine line of electric blue to your usual eye look, it really pops every eye colour from blues to browns as well as giving a modern twist. Using a a super bold liquid eyeliner (my pick is Kiko Waterproof Tropical Eyeliner in 03 River Turquoise) start on the outer lash edges and slowly work your way in – either 2/3rds along, or all the way for a bolder effect. Allow to dry by looking down for a minute. This look works beautifully when the bright liner sits just above your normal black or brown line. To set this look alight (as well as your eyes) grab an angle brush and draw the Cobalt shade from Urban Decay Electric Palette into the waterline; the two-tone blue shades give an incredibly fresh, summer time feel.

T OP T I P Keep the rest of this look fresh and neutral with a sheer base and illuminating primer and a dash of bronzer and a peachy neutral lipstick. I’m loving Nars Liquid Illuminator in Copacabana, Urban Decay Naked Skin Liquid Foundation and Revlon Matte Balm Stain in 230 Complex. LOVE that Blue mascara has come back with a vengeance? Try Rimmel Extra Super Lash Mascara in Electric Blue. Apply many coats for full impact or just the tips over your normal mascara for a more subtle pop.

SO IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN… TICKETS ARE BOOKED, TENTS AND CAMPING ESSENTIALS ARE PACKED BUT WHAT COSMETICS TO PACK THAT WILL MULTITASK WITHOUT WEIGHING YOU DOWN? The top essential must-have are the wipes! No serious festival goer would leave home without them. I’d recommend Boots Tea Tree and Witch Hazel Cleansing & Toning Wipes. These dermatologically tested wipes will not only remove make-up but deep cleanse, tone and tighten pores while fighting spot causing bacteria. Brilliant for also cleaning and sterilising hands and other body parts! The British weather really can sway either way but as well as packing your waterproofs be sure to pack a great sun factor. The best for a long day would be Ultrasun Once a day application. For those of you willing to look natural and forgo make-up try the SPF 30 Tinted Anti-aging Sun Protection for Very Sensitive Skin.
S K IN C A RE B Y FR EY- J A B A R K E R Festivals can go on and last many days which can mean no hair washing. Dry shampoo can become your best mate for giving body and soaking up oil. Check out Sachajuan Volume Powder. A powder based spray that creates volume and provides structure. It will leave you with a Matt finish and a fresh feel between shampoos. It also comes in two shades for lighter and darker hair. For post festival skin recovery check out When Special Package. It’s a pack that contains five face bio-cellulose sheet masks that treat five different concerns from travel mate to recover from sun, wind and dry air to snow magic which is rehydrating and gives radiance. Have fun and don’t forget your wellies!

KIM KIEFER What was your route into make-up? It’s interesting thinking back on what actually led me to a career as a make-up artist as it just wasn’t something I had ever considered. I was always a creative person, I loved art, to paint and to draw. Back in the 90s I went to Saatchi’s ‘Sensation’ art exhibition and it totally blew my mind! Now I can clearly see how that was actually a turning point which led me to what I’m doing now. It was such a thought provoking and challenging collection of art, with work by Ron Mueck, Cindy Sherman, Orlan, and the Chapman Brothers – all of these artists were using the processes of mould making and casting or sculpting at some level, many were using their work to challenge perceptions of beauty and of the self. They were often using new and challenging mediums, like Mark Quinn’s sculpture in which he cast his head using nine pints of his own blood.

JULIA KENNEDY MAKE-UP
KIM KIEFER This made for a very engaging and massively influential exhibition. Put together by an advertising mogul, it was challenging, thought provoking and on many levels it was shocking. The ideas really struck a chord with me, leading to an obsession with peoples perceptions of beauty and its representation in media imagery and advertising and also a fascination for the grotesque and with the effects that physical transformation has on a person’s psyche. These are still the driving forces behind what I do now. I started to explore these themes in my work, which became more and more portraiture and life drawing based. As I only ever drew and painted the face it seemed perfectly natural to start painting directly onto the face – two years studying specialist make-up at London college of fashion and my obsession with beauty and masquerade was solidified. Now, 14 years later one of the things that I love most about it is the variety – of people, of places, the artists and the travel. When I’m in Paris for fashion week working on the team alongside some of the most talented make-up artists from all around the world, at some of the most incredible shows, I feel very greatful that I am a make-up artist! Make-up is a wonderful empowering and transformative thing!

One product you never leave home without? It’s all about gorgeous skin for me – I can go without eye make-up and I never wear a lip but I do like my skin to look healthy and to glow. As skin changes with the seasons so must that one product! Spring: Dr Hauschka translucent bronze concentrate so that my pasty, post-winter skin matches the weather. Summer: a sheer powder bronzer with a glow. Givenchy Croisiere Healthy Glow Powder gives a gorgeous warmth and glow to the skin rather than adding too much colour or coverage. Autumn: with my tanned, post-sun skin I won’t leave the house without a great moisturiser and as my skin is usually a bit parched from the summer I always need to top up throughout the day – im going crazy about Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream right now! Winter: I would choose a tinted moisturiser with a little skin boosting glow to it – Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Fluid is magic. Phew! Totally cheated there but that’s a really tough question to ask a make-up artist!

How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? Things have changed heaps since I started – we’ve had the digital revolution! Firstly digital photography – gone are the days of checking make-up by looking at a polaroid through a magnifying loop! The detail you get from digital is incredible so I think the digital retouchers have had a steep learning curve to keep up with the ever increasing amount of detail. It’s had its ups and downs but it seems to finally have recently reached an incredible standard and I’m pleased to see that companies are using retouching more sensitively nowadays. There is nothing worse than doing a beautiful make-up to see, in the final images, that all skin texture has been erased and the texture and detail of the make-up has been lost. For me it is all about seeing skin in order to make it believable – we are humans and we want to aspire to human ideals not retouched robots. I believe the key to great make-up application is knowing when to stop! Hold back! …and when not to! Something wonderful has come from new technology. Cosmetics brands have been working away relentlessly developing what now seems to be a vast array of finer and more delicate products in line with the most unforgiving HD cameras and televisions. Some colours and textures simply don’t work in HD so there was a bit of trial and error going on in the industry

and for a while it showed. Now there is whole new generation of skin bases, primers, bronzing powders and gels that can be moisturising, mattifying, illuminating, colour correcting, skin renewing, pigment fading etc… and many of them are brilliant – it’s a very exciting time for skincare! For me, developments in technology are really important in order to shake things up a bit – its what keeps the work engaging and otherwise techniques can become old and stayed. Change is good generally – I much prefer it to a rest. As an in-demand artists in the industry, how do you find time to relax? When I am in London I find it almost impossible to slow down as there is just always so much to do and see, always a distraction! More than anything I love to go to exhibitions and to see art – but all these things really come to life when you can sit around the table with good friends and talk about them into the wee hours over a good home cooked meal. Relaxing for me is to do with the mind and soul rather than the body so when the energy is there I snap up any opportunity to get together with great friends and my dearest sister… we’re all really into music and love going to gigs and to events whenever our favourite DJ’s are playing, dancing away the nights at a festival can be as much a relaxing and regenerating tonic as anything else!

Sometimes there is simply no time to relax and the work days roll into one, so whenever I have a couple of days free I will nip to the countryside with my wonderful man… Spending time with nature is so important to me now, taking long walks, cooking and eating, doing yoga – the last time we were there the woods were awash with bluebells – the most magical and somehow soothing sight – nature’s colour therapy.

o it’s been two months since my last update and I’ve been going hell for leather! Immediately after Fashion Week I went straight into campaign mode, working with fashion houses such as Net-a-Porter, M&S and NEXT – as well as a very expensive bespoke hand bag designer. When it comes to campaigns I like to work closely with the client, photographer and stylist to get the right ‘feeling’ for the ad campaign. Of course, myself and the hairdresser will also make sure that our work blends together. I tend to work with hair dressers that I have a rapport with and we’ll bring our references together to create the most modern look. A key product this season has been the new Bobbi Brown Foundation Sticks. I was a little worried when I heard the formulation was changing, but once again Bobbi has perfected what I already thought was perfect – the sticks are now even smoother and adhere to the skin like well a ‘second seamless skin’ and we also have more colours – bonus!!! I love shooting dynamic fashion and worked on a shoot with two beautiful black models for Notion magazine (out now) the styling was very sporty but with an added floral twist with flower accessories – I wanted to keep the skin hyper fresh but with lots of highlights – I love the Kryolan ‘fireworks’ wheel on black skin – this creamy burnished wheel of golden molten colours is so easy to use and blend and although metallic it gives the skin the W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 21 // J U N E 2014

look a halo perfection. I used white gel liner from Shu Uemura to create the dynamic liner looks on each girl. I kept the liner to the outer and inner corner of the eyes leaving out the middle which made it look more sporty. The long awaited return of one my favorite music clients, La Roux, has also kept me under the radar as we have been shooting music videos, album sleeve and single sleeve shoots as well as press shoots for different magazines in the UK as well as the US and Paris. I worked closely with Smash Box cosmetics on creating Elly’s look. Whereas on her last campaign it was very colourful, bold and edgy – it was all very experimental this time around it’s a much sexier grown up look but still keeping with the androgynous vibe that is La Roux.

I love layering products to create the perfect skin and fell in love with the Halo range of products from Smashbox – they are not only HD friendly but they also give a gorgeous flood of light to the skin. I must also commend one other product which was a life saver and a product that should be in every artists/consumer bag – it’s by Nars and is the BEST pore refiner/primer… It’s called Instant Line & Pore Perfector and this is like a magic wand that fills in and literally erases fine lines and furrows – take it from me you NEED this! I am now packing for my trip to Miami – I shall report back next month make-up mavens! Love Liz xx

ummer is finally here TWO readers and I could not be happier! Time to grab my bikini and feel the sunshine. Which leads me onto this month’s destination – Portland, Maine – located at the tippy top of the New England area of the USA. Maine is not only the home town of horror novelist Stephen King and celebrity home maker Martha Stewart, but the state is lined with white sandy beaches. It also has a massive sea side boating culture. If seafood is your delicacy of choice, then Maine would be your mecca as it’s hard not to walk a few feet without hitting a lobster shack. I was in Portland on a recent trip to visit my long time friend Tracy Sabol. Tracy happens to be the weekly night news anchor for the Fox TV network. She’s pretty much a real life ‘Ron Burgundy’ or should I say ‘Veronica Corningstone’?! I’ve worked with Tracy over the years doing her make-up for

various events and newscasts but, like the majority of news readers and journalists, she usually has to do her own for most broadcasts. My latest top pick for her or anyone who needs a quick fix make-up box for camera is LORAC’s cosmetic PRO TO GO palette. It contains, shadows, shaders, blushers and a concelor. It’s super compact and the texture of LORAC’s make-up is like butter. I’ve become a huge fan of LORAC as the pigment in the shadows have long lasting power. Here are Tracy’s top make-up picks for when she’s on air: Benefit Badgal Lash Mascara: I introduced this full lash mascara to Tracy years ago and it is still one of her favourites. It dries quickly for re-application and it doesn’t flake or smudge. YSL Touché Éclat: A professional staple when it comes to concealor/highlighters. But make sure to use it for under the eyes or highlighting the skin only as a lot of people use it to conceal blemishes. Using it this way can actually reflect light to the problem area rather than covering it. Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Ageing Cleansing Gel: Tracy swears by this face cleanser to keep her skin looking clear and glowing. Other cool spots in Portland to check out are: Portland General Store: An apothecary of high quality, ethically made grooming products and home goods. The styling of the store is super cool and organic. They are one of the originators W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 21 // J U N E 2014

of Beard Oils. The oils come in scents called Ginger, Whiskey and Tobacco whilst the gift sets are packaged in recycled cigar boxes. Their Beard Oils keep facial hair moisturised, full of sheen and freshly scented. Their Face Bomb – a deep cleansing mud scrub – uses clay and walnut shells to exfoliate away dead skin. Most scrubs use mini plastic beads which unethically clog our water systems. And of course on name alone, I was drawn to the decadent hand cream called Wood! www.portlandgeneralstore.com Studio Heleni: Run and owned by Jessica Anawalt Johnson who has over 25 years of experience in the beauty and salon industry. Her areas of expertise include clinical aesthetics, body waxing, brow shaping and make-up artistry. She opened up Studio Heleni (one of the only professional make-up and brow studios in New England north of Boston) while working as a make-up artist for Chanel. She noticed clients time after time were coming in with bad brows. This made her realise there wasn’t a great place that specialised in brows in Maine. What is also unique about Studio Heleni is that they use a proprietary wax that she created called Bombshell Wax, a low temperature, hard wax that shrink wraps hair but is very delicate on the skin. www.studioheleni.com The Holy Donut: A MUST stop sweet treat spot. Be sure to arrive early as they sell out quick! By the time I arrived I was drooling like Homer Simpson! The flavour list is out of this world including Bacon Cheddar, Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt and Sweet Potato Ginger. www.theholydonut.com
