hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? It was not really a decision, it just happened. At school I was dyslexic and not academic at all, but loved painting and any sort of creativity. I just naturally had an eye for it even from an early age – my father has a cine film of me with my sister on the Isle Scilly on holiday. There was a small shop and in it I saw a make-up set on a piece of card with a lipstick, blusher and eye shadow. I wanted it! I was five and my sister three and I spent the rest of the day apply it to my sisters face – my father filmed it all it’s so funny to look at it now – I think I must have known from an early age that I wanted to be a make-up artist.
Are you self taught or did you train? I’m self taught, have been doing make-up for over 22 years and I’m still learning. Techniques and products are changing all the time and you can always be shown something different. Never be afraid to experiment – make-up can be removed and reapplied. That’s one thing I have learnt! I love to paint and that’s what I do when I’m doing a make-up. To me the face is like a canvas, the only difference is that the face has movement and belongs to someone. I love being able to create a look that can totally change a face or just enhance it. To me every face is a picture. One of the most important things to remember when you are doing make up is that you are always W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 22 // J U LY 2014

aware of the fact that you are in someone’s very personal space. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you the most? My style of make up is all about sculpting and shading. I like to enhance what is naturally there. I use shading techniques, light reflecting make-up and skin tints. I love the skin to glow and look natural. This does not mean you cannot have a strong look, the eyes can be made up heavier, the lips can be darker but for me I love the skin to just have a natural glow. The elegance and sophistication of the make-up of the 1950’s, I think is timeless and still filters through into today’s looks. Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? The one product I would not leave home without is sun screen. A sun protection factor (SPF) 15 with ultraviolet A (UVA) coverage is good for everyday use and can be found in a lot of foundations and moisturisers, but this is still a low protection. If you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun or at the beach then a SPF30/50 with a UVA and UVB coverage is very important. The sun’s rays contain both UVA and UVB, these are very dangerous to the skin. One of the most damaging and aging things you can do to your skin is not protect it. You will still tan but without the dangers. Check the back of the product for a 5 star rating.

Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry related story. A lot of the time people do not think I’m the make-up artist. I get mistaken for being the lighting engineer, manager, photographer, and director… etc etc People just presume the make-up artist is going to be woman. So when I was on a shoot in Mexico with an extremely beautiful lady, who at the time was dating a famous Hollywood Actor, we were on the beach and the sand was hot, so I offered her a piggy back to the waters edge. The next thing a helicopter with photographers started taking pictures of us. The following day, needless to say in all the papers I was the ‘Hollywood Actor’ on the beach at our secret hide away! If I had been a woman, there would have been a totally different story.
How do feel the industry has changed since you first started? For me the biggest change has been the internet and social media. It still amazes me that I can be on a shoot on the other side of the world and the pictures can be seen in London almost straight away. At one time half the day was spent polaroiding the shoot to get the lighting set then the make-up and hair and then the job would be shot on film which would then be brought back to London, processed and then finally printed. Now this is all done via the internet! PHOTOS

Which person or thing defines beauty for you? For me the person who defines beauty is the magnificent Lauren Bacall. She started her career at 19 and she has the ultimate classic face of her time and even now at 89 she has aged so gracefully and naturally. How do you relax? My way of relaxing is to go to the house in Suffolk with the dogs, Murry, Archie and Izzy and walk on the beach. Dogs are fantastic at getting you to relax and unwind. They never answer you back and their love is totally unconditional. I walk for miles, go swimming and eat fish and chips, for which Aldeburgh is famous for. But always by my side are the dogs – that’s my way to relax. Your plans for the future? I’m now finding more time to spend consulting for make-up brands. I’ve recently spent time in Italy at the Gotham Cosmetics Factory who manufacture make-up. I work alongside companies that want to launch new brands, giving them my advice on colours and textures of products that work together, all the way through to launch. I’m working with Doctor Justine Hextall, consultant Dermatologist, showing patients how to cover scares and conceal blemishes with the use of make-up after facial surgery from skin cancer. I’m also working with patients that have had facial surgery after an accident. It’s a very different side to my job which I love.

FINALLY THE SUN HAS GOT HIS HAT ON AND HE’S COMING OUT TO PLAY, HIP HIP HIP HOORAY! IT APPEARS SUMMER HAS ARRIVED, PEOPLE HAVE GOT THE BBQS OUT AND ARE FINALLY BARING MORE SKIN. BUT I CAN’T HELP NOTICING MORE AND MORE PEOPLE GETTING CAUGHT OUT IN THE SUN AND LOOKING A TOUCH… WELL… LOBSTER! HERE ARE SOME OF MY TOP SUN PRODUCTS. It can be so uncomfortable for some in the sun. If you struggle with heat rash and prickly heat I’d recommend Institut Esthederm Sun Intolerance Treatment High Protection Body Spray for sensitive sun-intolerant skin. Be sure to apply every hour for happy calm skin. Often a reason for getting caught out in the sun is being out for longer than expected and not having cream on you to reapply during the day. The once a day formulas are great for ensuring long lasting protection and are often brilliant for those playing sports, both in and out of water. Check out Riemann P20 Once a DaySun Protection. It will give you up to 10 hours sun protection from both UVA and UVB rays with just one application and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes in the water. No matter how careful we think we are, on the odd occasion we still get caught out and our skin is not only a bit red but also sore too! Try Soleve Sun Burn Relief. Not only is it moisturising, it contains ibuprofen, an anti inflammatory pain killer. It can be applied every two hours for up to four time a day, for those that have really over done it! Remember, have fun, stay safe and avoid the midday sun. Be sure to pop a T-shirt on and seek shade if you start to feel you’ve had a bit too much – plus keep up your fluids by drinking plenty of water. What was your route into make-up? As a teenager growing up in the 80s I was a fan of music and Top of The Pops‌ I grew up watching pop stars such as Boy George, Duran Duran and Gary Numan. I remember watching a sister of mine putting her make up on in very bright vivid colours. I also loved drawing and painting. Influenced by the artwork that a London poster shop called Athena was displaying, I found myself staring at portraits of ladies wearing very strong make-up. I always wanted to paint them myself, so I started practicing on myself and my sister. Then I got into hairdressing and the rest is history!

One product do you never leave home without? Well I would have to say Skinbase Foundation by Illamasqua. It’s the most versatile foundation that can be blended all the way out or built up for a medium coverage. It also photographs incredibly well without melting and lasts a full day in studio or on location. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? There are certainly a lot more make-up artists around right now that rely heavily on Photoshop to fix any small or large flaws. I have heard on several occasions people saying ‘don’t worry we can fix it in post!’ But being old school we never had retouching, so everything had to be perfect and camera-ready when they leave my chair. How do you find time to relax? I do try to take a few days to myself to switch off. I also have a wonderful family and an amazing set of friends whom I treasure dearly. I love going to the cinema and meeting up in the local bar for a few drinks in the evening to unwind from a hectic day shooting or painting faces.

s Dorothy famously said “There’s no place like home” and I have to agree. Although I am unbelievably grateful to travel as much as I do, there’s nothing better than being back in my hood. And lucky for me it’s a hot destination spot too. So TWO readers, this month I thought it would be fun to take you on a tour of my stomping ground – Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It attracts the artistic crowd and most of the creative peeps I work with in New York, live in the area. After a visit it’s not hard to understand why.
HOW TO GET THERE The L, J, M or Z subway trains take you there but I say get adventurous and hop on the East River Ferry. Float your way over from Manhattan in a quick trip that will take you under the bridges and let you soak in the sky line. You can also walk, skateboard or bike over Williamsburg Bridge from Manhattan in about 20 minutes. Bring your camera – the view is breathtaking.

and cooked with love. Make sure you order the empanadas – they are stuffed full of goodness and the best I’ve ever tasted. Tabare is a great date night spot as the decor is low lit and super cosy. You’ll feel as though a time machine took you through a doorway into 1930s Latin America. www.tabarenyc.com Smorgasburg: Located at the East River State Park on Saturdays. There’s over a 100 food vendors to munch your way through, ranging from oysters to ice cream. Your taste buds will thank you. www.smorgasburg.com
SHOP Brooklyn Charm: A treasure chest of baubles, bangles, charms and chains. You’ll feel as though you stumbled upon an Aladdin’s Cave of sparkled delights. Let one of their talented staff help you create your own personalized necklace or bracelet. Loads of pre-made jewelery to choose from too. www.brooklyncharmshop.com Brooklyn Denim co.: A cornucopia of top brand named jeans and an in-house tailor on site to make sure they fit you perfectly. Grab a drink from the whiskey bar and turn the shopping experience into a party. The staff are “jean-us” and really know their stuff. www.brooklyndenimco.com Artists and Fleas: Open Saturdays and Sundays. An indoor market of jewellery, art and clothing. PAMPER N4 Med Spa: A one stop beauty shop that includes a full service hair and nail salon, make-up services, spray tans, massage, eye lash extensions and facials. They have a full medical spa with Botox, laser hair removal and filler treatments. I went in recently to test out some of their skincare specialties. My therapist, Jumana, started with the hydra-facial, like a wet microdermabrasion. Two different types of serums were pumped into my skin while the tool she massaged my face with buffed away dead skin cells. This is a favorite facial treatment amongst busy New Yorkers, as it’s a skin savor that can be performed in less than 30 minutes. Next Jumana treated me to an eye treatment. She massaged my eye area and administered electrical currents to drain away my allergy-stricken, swollen eyes. I arrived a puffer fish and left more bright eyed than Bambi. This treatment is terrific for eliminating dark circles too. Jumana then applied a light glycolic peel on my face that whilst itchy, it wasn’t uncomfortable. Next was a laser facial – terrific for anti-aging. Combining the hydra and laser treatments is a very unique treatment process to the N4 Med Spa. The laser felt as though mini hot pin pricks were being beamed into my skin. But I relaxed into it knowing those lasers were actually stimulating my collagen and muscles helping to create a more youthful appearance – which it

definitely did! Best of all there is no downtime from any of these facial treatments. No redness or peeling. My complexion was brighter, skin tighter and a stubborn pigmentation mark I had on my forehead had noticeably faded into non existence. All of the staff at N4 Med Spa are on top of their game and I was spoiled rotten. N4 use mineral make-up brand La Bella Donna (www.labelladonna.com) in their makeovers too. This is a gentle brand which is perfect to apply on after one of their facials. If you go, make sure you have a whiff of the delicious scented candles they sell. My favorite is the Volcano Candle which gives off a scent of tropical fruit and sugary citrus. www.n4medspa.com Massage Williamsburg: Get those hard working, sore make-up artist shoulders rubbed down and de-stressed. You’ll leave floating on air and majorly chillaxed. www.massagewilliamsburg.com While spending time at home, I’ve tested out these Home Use Beauty Devices: Clarosonic Aria: This cleansing brush has made a major dent in my nightly skin care routine. My usually dry skin feels better hydrated after use. It’s wonderful for helping to remove the days make-up and NYC pollution away. www.clarisonic.com TRIA: A do it yourself home laser gun. They say use once a week for 3 months for permanent removal of hair. I started out on my underarms. It’s only been a couple of weeks and my hair has barely grown back. The process is a mildly painful but bearable and totally worth it for the hairless results. www.triabeauty.com W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 22 // J U LY 2014

constantly asked for solutions to stubborn fat problems. Previously the only answer other than exercise and diet was to go under the knife. Obviously this is a major life decision and not something that I could offer. The frustration of not having an answer to these enquiries led me to 3D Lipo technology. Researching the many different machines on the market offering non surgical slimming, going tot to clinics to see them in action and speaking to patients and practitioners; It was obvious that 3D Lipo was the only machine to have. It offers a combination of 3 treatments in a unique package so there is rarely a problem that can’t be treated. Additionally, the company supply thorough training for me and my staff and ongoing support and backup which is really important for both me and my patients. What kind of results do you see with 3D lipo? The results are really excellent, as can be seen by the before and after photos on our website [click here]. There are a wide range of applications and the results are stunning, for some life changing. Mum Sharon Barrow tackled her post baby weight that she couldn’t shift and lost 20cm from her waist, going from a size 14 to 10! Others, who having lost lots of weight through hard work and are then left with sagging skin that no exercise will shift, radio frequency really can shrink improve it. Would you recommend 3D lipo to your clients? Definitely, of all of the fat busting machines on the market that I have researched 3D Lipo is far ahead of them all. Three treatments in one machine mean that we can help most people. The case studies of patient treatments are extensive and the results excellent. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it… and I for one will be using the radio frequency for skin tightening! Which kind of client would 3D Lipo most suit? The ideal client will be 20% above their ideal body weight with

a BMI below 30. It is perfect for anyone looking to sculpt their body with a combination of inch loss and skin tightening. It has so many application that there is not one type of patient that it is best for. It can slim down the waist and tighten skin after pregnancy, reduce bingo wings, freeze love handles… the list goes on. And as I know only too well, women don’t have to be overweight to have cellulite and this is a perfect solution for those women. When can you first see results and how long do they last? This depends on the treatment. The average loss from cavitation is 2-4 cm in the first treatment and this improves over the next week and then you get further improvement with every treatment and we recommend 6. With cryolipolosis the results start to appear after a month and improve to maximum effect at three months, only one treatment is needed on the target area. Radio frequency shows immediate effect but this is improved with every treatment and we recommend 8 weekly treatments. Summer holiday season is coming up, when would you recommend women have 3D lipo to get their dream bikini body? We would suggest a combination of cavitation and cryolipolosis starting approximately 8 weeks before the holiday. How much does a course of 3D lipo cost? Again this depends on the treatment plan and everyone is individual so we offer a free 30 minute consultation with the specialist practitioner who will devise a unique package to achieve the desired results. Dr Renee is pleased to be introducting the 3D Lipo system into The Non Surgical Clinic from June. Call 0800 677 1688 for more information.

BEARD TRIMMER I look about eleven years old without any facial hair, but that’s not an excuse to lee it get messy. Keeping on top of my beard is easy (and much kinder on my skin than shaving) and my weapon of choice is the Remington ‘Touch Control’. It’s kind of a hybrid of beard trimmer and gadget which

I cleanse my face in the morning and at night to avoid congestion and spots. I’ve been using the Kiehl’s ‘Oil Eliminator’ at the moment. As the name would suggest, it rids my skin of excess oils that can block pores and attra dirt, leaving my skin feeling smo and looking matte and healthy. I exfoliates too, scrubbing away d skin cells that cling to my face a make it look a little grey and life
MOISTURISER
My current moisturiser matche cleanser: it’s the Kiehl’s ‘Oil Elim 24 Hour Lotion’. I spend a lot of on camera and I hate looking sh moisturiser is lightweight and so feel thick on my skin. It absorbs quickly and removes any excess I may have missed while cleansin using it my skin feels clean, fre hydrated for the entire day.

EYE CREAM The skin around my eyes goes quite dry, and dry skin leads to wrinkles. It’s also a delicate area so I like to use Origins ‘Skin Doctor’. It’s natural, gentle and very simple. It only takes a little because it’s pretty concentrated and my eyes instantly feel hydrated. Moisturising your eyes is a really simple step that I think most guys tend to ignore. Eyes are the window to the soul, and I want my soul to look as young as I feel!
HAIR PRODUCT I’m really lucky with my hair: as long as I keep it trimmed, it’s really easy to style and takes me a matter of seconds. Once I’m out of the shower I will blow dry my hair roughly into position and use a little American Crew ‘Grooming Cream’. It has a strong hold but remains playable and gives a bit of shine which I think makes my hair look healthier. Be careful if you try this out though, because a little goes a long way and your hair can quickly look too heavy with product if you use too much.
FRAGRANCE After quite a few years my favourite fragrance is still ‘Tom Ford for Men’. lt’s classy and masculine and fresh. It has become my signature scent and I feel that I can wear it in the evening with a suit or during the day in jeans and T-shirt. I’m not very good at describing fragrances but it makes me feel like James Bond (Daniel Craig, not Pierce Brosnan!).
