ELEMIS PRO-COLLAGEN HYDRA-GEL MASKS These gel mask moons are infused with plankton and algae which cool the eye area whilst giving an instant tightening effect. Skin around the eye is revived, brightened and smoothed. Amazing pick-me-up for tired eyes. HD BROW COLOURFIX Brows are still a huge story this summer. HD Brows has launched this silky gel which can be slicked over brows to set hairs in place. It applies a natural colour so you can use it alone or for extra drama on top of another brow product. Packed with vitamin E it helps to condition the hairs, so it’s perfect for those trying to regrow their hairs. With three shade options for fair, medium and dark there is a colour to suit all. DIORSKIN STAR FOUNDATION This new foundation gives a full coverage but still allows skin to look real. Infused with hollowed out spheres of pigment the light is reflected over the skin giving a fresh, ethereal glow.

hen did you first decide that you wanted to become a make-up artist… what made you think ‘That’s what I want to do’? I was working as a PA for a company that made ‘talking heads’ – three dimensional facsimiles that had a film projected onto them. Laurence Olivier was our subject at the time, and his make-up artist fascinated me with tales of applying red lips to Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind, only to have them kissed off by Lord Laurence! His assistant was very glamorous and professional looking in her white coat, with lots of make-up and backcombed hair and I decided I wanted to be her (especially when I found out how much she was earning!) It must have been almost thirty years ago. Are you self-taught or did you train? I saved up for a three month special effects and fashion make-up course (excelling at the former) at Complections School of Makeup in Holborn (it no longer exists). Thereafter it was all learning by experience and especially mistakes. Anything that involves co-ordination of hand, eye and mind takes hours and hours of practice – you have to get those neurons running down the right pathways! I learn something new every time I pick up a make-up brush. Who or what inspires you? I’ve often repeated this quote by the lateral thinker Edward de Bono, ‘To find inspiration in the everyday, the mundane, is a powerful source of creativity’. Of course I’m inspired by art and

Do you prefer working backstage at shows or on location shoots? I like the buzz of working backstage and the fact that I’m with my team, but it can be stressful with all the press interviews and late model arrivals, so I would say I prefer location shoots, although they come with their own set of challenges! Obviously it depends on the location... I’ve enjoyed Tulum, Cape Town, Kenya, Moscow, Beijing, Acapulco and equally Newcastle, to name just a few. It’s always an adventure and often one that I wouldn’t experience if I wasn’t working, so I’m grateful. How would you define your style? Is there a particular period that has influenced you most? My style can be quite ‘f**ked up’ so I suppose there’s a little punkiness in what I do... I like make-up to look like it belongs to the person wearing it; like it’s been lived in. However, I start as perfectly as possible, taking care of the beauty before injecting personality. Sometimes it’s directly inspired by art but I don’t believe the face is a canvas... it’s a face! I suppose the period that has influenced me the most is the late 70s/ early 80s when women really embraced lots of W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 23 // AU G U ST 2014

make-up and played up all their features in colour (my Mum!) Which one product would you advise someone to never leave home without? I’d say a lip balm because it nourishes and is great for highlights but I never leave home without a powder compact for my shiny nose! Which other make-up artist has helped you along the way in your career? Lisa Butler, Mary Jane Frost, Val Garland, Mary Greenwell, Wendy Rowe, Lisa Eldridge... it’s quite a long list! I’d also include the M.A.C Pro Team, especially Gordon Espinet and Terry Barber. And my ex-assistants Andrew Gallimore and Athena Paginton, along with my current assistants Hannah Paul and Lucy Pearson. Mentioning no names of course, tell us a funny industry-related story. I can’t think of one because there are so many! I asked my assistants and they thought it was very funny recently that I forgot to bring my kit to work and had to style it out with the contents of my handbag and a few other’s. The designer said the make-up was perfect! How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? There seem to be more make-up artists nowadays and generally women are more savvy about make-up. Social media has obviously had an W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 23 // AU G U ST 2014

NOW THE SUN IS SHINING AND WE’RE ALL HANGING OUT IN OUR SUMMER CLOTHES AND SHOWING A LITTLE MORE BARE SKIN, HERE ARE MY TOP PRODUCTS TO GIVE YOUR SKIN A LITTLE HEALTHY GLOW WITHOUT THE THREAT OF SUN DAMAGE. It’s important to buff away the old dead grey skin cells for those that want glowing skin, so try Cane and Austin Retexturizing Treatment Scrub. Dr Austin has put 10% glycolic acid (from sugar cane) and 5% salicylic acid in his face and body scrub which will lift away old dead skin cells giving you gorgeous glowing luminous skin. Genius... Clarins Radiant-Plus Golden Glow Booster. A made to measure fake tan that can be added to any daily moisturiser, so allows you to keep using your usual anti-ageing/oil control/extreme dry skin moisturiser whilst achieving a sun kissed glow. Simply add a few drops to your usual moisturiser in the palm of your hand and apply. For those that want to maintain the colour they already have or those that have the fake tan fear then check out Sunkissed Gradual Lotion Body Moisturiser with a touch of fake tan from Primark. Made with Shea butter and vitamin E, it has a lovely smell of coconuts and tropical holidays plus it will leave your skin super soft. If, like me, you not only want a rich tan but for your skin to glisten too then check out Xen-tan Luminous Gold Gel. A fast drying lightweight clear gel containing sparkling gold pigments that will instantly give you a dewy luminous glow, then develop into a beautiful tan within 3 hours. It is paraben free so it’s great for both face and body. When using any fake tan I’d recommend a tanning mit and be sure to apply carefully and blend to avoid streaks. Enjoy the summer guys!

CHARLOTTE GASKELL
What was your route into make-up? I moved to London when I was 17 as I won a scholarship to a Theatre school and intended to follow a career in performing Arts. Then in 2005 I became part of a girl group so we were constantly performing and doing photo shoots. I loved getting us all made-up and ready for events, and part of my role in the band was making sure we all looked good and sticking on our false-eyelashes before gigs! When the band failed (miserably!) I decided to stick with what I knew best, leave the singing to the X-factor hopefuls; and enrolled in some make-up courses. After that I was lucky enough to assist some fantastic hair and make-up artists who’s advice and knowledge was invaluable.

One product do you never leave home without? Having super-thick eyebrows that are totally odd shapes, I use a slightly dried-out Bobbi Brown gel eye-liner on them with a stiff angled liner brush. It gives great texture and definition to thicker brows and really mimics the thicker hairs where they are sparse. I also feel naked without the use of my Shu-Uemura eyelash curlers and always give them an extra squeeze after my mascara! – never be afraid to colour outside the lines! How do you feel the industry has changed since you started? People have turned to things like youtube and social media to learn techniques and gain product knowledge. Therefore budding artists have access to a whole spectrum of learning for free rather than having to pay thousands for courses that they may not then mould into a career. As an in demand artist in the Industry how do you find time to relax? Being the make-up artist in the team leaves no room for lateness or tiredness as you are the first point of call, so shoot days can feel quite long and sometimes tiresome; and there is nothing better than a large glass of wine when I get home from a long day! But my favourite thing is taking some time out every January when the industry tends to be quieter and head to India or Asia for some culture and craziness!

ey y’all!” Yes, that’s right, I said “y’all’! Well that’s because this month I’m writing to you from Nashville, Tennessee. And the Nashvillians (as they like to be called) use the expression “y’all” a lot. Another thing I’ve noticed about the people in Nashville is that they are the epitome of Southern hospitality. It’s as if niceness is pumped into the water. On top of that just about everyone I met had some form of connection to its famous music scene. Nashville, like the popular TV show named after the city, is the home of country music. The main reason I journeyed down south was to pay a visit to Andrew Clancey – a fashion stylist who I’ve had a long standing work relationship with. We’ve worked with each other over the years in Ibiza, London and New York. When he moved

to NYC he opened the store Any Old Iron when he couldn’t find his favourite British designers in the USA. While in NYC Andrew and I collaborated on various shoots and projects together including a fashion show along with his fashion designer sister Julia Clancey www.juliaclancey.com (one of the labels he sells) that was hosted by icon Amanda Lepore. Now Andrew has moved Any Old Iron’s base down to Nashville which has a wonderful up and coming fashion scene. Luckily all his labels are available for sale online www.anyoldiron.net The new store will resemble the Simpkins Grocery Store front that was originally there in the 1950s but behind the faux grocery store front will sell a mix of UK designer labels and local Nashville labels. Working alongside Andrew is his girlfriend, Laura Citron, a Louisiana Southern belle who has started up her own boutique Opium Vintage. www.etsy.com/shop/opiumvintage. Laura, a guru in classic vintage style dressing will have her own shop set up just behind Andrew’s. Together they are taking Nashville’s fashion scene by storm. They say in the south “the bigger the hair the closer to God” so I thought it was necessary on my trip to go get my hair did. I paid a visit to Renae Morton owner of Lucy Pop Salon www.lucypopsalon.com. Lucy Pop salon has an extensive menu of terrific beauty services. Most of her staff work on major red carpet events for celebrities in the Nashville area such as the CMA W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 22 // J U LY 2014

– Country Music awards. What’s also special about her salon is that Renae developed a line of cruelty-free, natural and organic hair, bath, skin, and home products. All are made in-house at Lucy Pop. The line is called Pretty Pretty Pop Pop and are available at both Lucy Pop Salon and online www.prettyprettypoppop.com She used the Prosperous Confection Scalp Elixir on me which smelt amazing. It’s a blend of Coconut oil, clary sage, and ylang ylang promoting healthy hair growth and also adds moisture without being too heavy. Here are Renae’s tips for the perfect blow-dry: • Always use a nozzle attachment on your dryer and keep it directed down the hair shaft from root to ends. • Remove about 80% of the moisture from your hair with a towel or your dryer before you even pick up a round brush. • Use product sparingly – one or two products on damp hair for volume, style setting and heat protection and one finishing product for smoothing, texture, or hold. If you overdo it with too much or too many products your style will fall flat and get dirtier faster – this means your blow out won’t last as long. Favorite brushes for blowouts: • The Tangle Teezer for detangling • Ibizia Boar Bristle brushes for bounce and movement

• YS Park G series brushes – Japanese designed and excellent for shine and smoothness While you’re in Nashville you need to ditch your healthy carb-free diet and get stuck in to some of their good old fashioned southern style cooking. I swear my veins bled beer and bbq for weeks after my trip! Take a 20 minute car journey to the outskirts of the city to the Loveless Cafe and motel www.lovelesscafe.com. It’s a step back in time to the 1950s. The menu includes things like pulled pork sandwiches and home made buttery biscuits so delish that my mouth waters just thinking about them. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles – a traditional Southern dish. It was a heartburn waiting to happen, incredibly filling but so damn good. Add a must-do trip down to the Honkey Tonk Row located downtown on Broadway. Go and visit places like Robert’s Western World www.robertswesternworld.com and The Stage www.thestageonbroadway.com/theStageOn/ home.php where the beer and rock a billy blues go hand in hand.

So, is there a point to dump the cream and adopt the needle? Not at all. It was this very discussion point that got me to make a video with Maleka Dattu, founder of Merumaya Skincare about the lifelong relationship between skincare and non-surgical treatments. I see it is as a continuum starting in our teens and looking like this: teenstwenties: good skincare and acne control, late twenties-early thirties: botox, mid thirties-forties: botox, fillers and skinboosters, late forties: botox/ fillers/non-surgical facelift, fifties: all of the above perhaps with selective surgery as needed. Maleka has tried to develop a skin brand that grows with you and I am personally stuck on the amazing Youth Serum at the moment which is a great make-up base as well. So I see my clinic and skin brands such as Merumaya as a team working together to keep a woman as beautiful as they can be!
