How did you start in make-up? It was quite by accident really. I’d just left art college and was working at Pineapple Dance Studios to earn money and not exactly sure what I wanted to do with my life. My sister, Paola, used to model a bit for her friends and I went along to a shoot with her one day. I ended up doing her make-up and it kind of started there. I then began testing with different photographers. A friend’s brother started a company making chocolate willies and he asked me to do the make-up for their advertising shoot and I got paid £75 for it, which was so much money then. Around that time I was introduced to Donna Trope, a beauty photographer. I tested with her almost every weekend for a year. She taught me a lot about make-up, how to take my painting /art background and adapt it to the face. It was very different back then, I don’t think there were as many make-up artists as there are now. I never assisted anyone, I just worked with photographer friends and it kind of happened for me. Who or what makes you laugh? You… Ha ha! I’m serious! I miss you living around the corner and popping over for an evening of news, views, gossip and Baileys on ice… Ha ha! I’m still very cross with you for moving to Pimlico!

Your five favourite beauty products? Five products… really? I always find this difficult to answer because once I start I keep remembering more things that I really love. OK, here goes... 1. Egyptian Magic it’s a natural balm a bit like Vaseline but completely natural and it’s amazing. 2. C le de Peau for their foundations and concealers. I know I’m the Creative Make-up Director and I have to say that but they really are the best. 3. A romatherapy Associates Relax Oil. Can’t go anywhere with out it. I just love the smell. 4. I have just discovered this new hair product call Skimdo that is nothing short of amazing! As you know, I’ve crazy, curly hair that looks as though it’s been dragged through a hedge backward most days. Skimdo de-frizzes and gives me nice, soft curls and it’s not scented… I hate over-perfumed products. It’s the best! My hair and I love it! Although I’m now waiting for my new Windle & Moodie products… huh hmmmm!!! 5. Suqu Eyebrow Liquid Pen. It lasts all day and is like a Japanese paintbrush.

You’re going on a trip for two weeks and you’re allowed to take five films with you, what would they be? To be honest I wouldn’t really take films away with me. I much prefer to read and I’d take lots of books. Before I had my Kindle I’d have one suitcase full of books. So I’m changing your question… Ha ha! Am I being annoying yet? My five books would be The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt which I have just started reading. The Teachings of Lao-Tzu is a wonderful book. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Anna Karenina. The Paleo Code, oh, that’s four! I’d recommend The Place Beyond The Pines with Ryan Gosling though as a film! What’s your favourite food? Cake! Cake? Ha ha ha! Hang on, maybe not… Chocolate! But I guess that’s not really food. I think it would have to be white truffle pasta, eaten in Italy of course, with a good glass of red wine. If you were on the TV show Mastermind what would be your specialist subject? That would never happen, ha ha! But if I were, it would be quantum physics. And before you ask, no, I know nothing about it! But in a world where I would be on Mastermind I would be really good at quantum physics.
What music where you into growing up and are you still into it now? I used to be a huge Bowie fan when I was younger. But to be honest I don’t have anything I’m really into at the moment. I hear so much music at work on shoots everyday I quite like silence. If I do listen to music then it is usually BBC Radio 6 or Classic. What are your favourite designers that you wear? Celine, Prada, Isabelle Marant. You live in London. If you could change one thing about it, what would it be? More Barclays (Boris) bikes would be good. They seem to only be in the centre of town. Oh and there isn’t any really good organic juice bars! Sorry that’s two things. Ha ha! I’m not very good at this am I?! If you didn’t live in London where would you live? I’d live in the countryside somewhere, either Italy or England. I like the idea of pottering around my garden growing my own herbs and vegetables.

You’re put on a desert island and only allowed 10 songs on your iPod. What would they be? Van Morrison – Astral Weeks Kate Bush – The Hounds of Love Nirvana – Unplugged Puccini – La Bohème Bach – Piano Concerto Ravi Shankar – The Best Of Massive Attack – Blue Lines Ry Cooder – Paris, Texas Fleetwood Mac – Rumours Stone Roses – Second Coming A Single Man – Soundtrack Nick Drake – Five Leaves I know that’s more than 10 but I’d just sneak in another iPod! :-) Your favourite artist past or present? Jenny Saville Who would you like to play you in a movie of your life? I don’t know… Julianne Moore or maybe Jessica Lange? Ha ha! Where are you heading next? I’m off to Paris for the shows.

[ CHANTECAILLE TREATMENT ] HAVING LIVED AND WORKED IN CENTRAL LONDON FOR THE LAST 12 YEARS I’VE NOT ONLY BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH BUT ALSO PRIVILEGED TO HAVE HAD SOME OF THE BEST FACIAL AND BODY TREATMENTS BY SOME OF THE BEST THERAPISTS IN THE WORLD. BUT THIS IS ALSO A DOUBLE EDGED SWORD AS NOW I EXPECT A LOT FROM A TREATMENT AND CAN FEEL QUITE PUT OUT IF IT’S NOT UP TO SCRATCH. THAT’S WHY I FELT COMPELLED TO SHARE WITH YOU ONE OF THE BEST TREATMENTS I’VE EVER HAD BY ONE OF THE BEST FACIALISTS IN THE BUSINESS.

W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 25 // O C TO B ER 2014
I came across Elizabeth Abernethy who is based in the Chantecaille Healing Spa at Fenwick on Bond Street. Not only does Elizabeth use exquisite Chantecaille products to treat your skin but she treats you personally, mind, body and soul… She is literally soul soothing. I had the flower facial which combines lymphatic drainage along with deep acupressure massage and this is where Elizabeth comes into her own. No two treatments will ever be the same as she works with you on a level that you need on that particular day. Using the technique Reiki which is based on the therapist channeling energy into the client promoting healing on both a physical and emotional level. Not only did I feel that I came out with a glowing complexion, you could also see a visible difference in the contours of my face. Any puffiness or grey sluggishness was gone and my cheekbones and jawline were more defined. Elizabeth had achieved this by simply using her hands with firm drainage movements along the meridians of the face. Imagine her almost lifting the muscles while massaging them allowing toxins to flow away. The thing that compelled me to write about this treatment though was how I felt emotionally after this experience. With most facials you generally come out relaxed and chilled however, I feel Elizabeth delved welcomely into my soul. Like me she is a great believer in people having energies, we can feed and add to one another’s energy and change how someone feels without actually saying a word. I feel that Elizabeth has a gift and it’s one that I whole heartedly wish to share with you all. If there’s one thing you do in life, treat yourself to this dream experience. I promise it’s one you’ll never regret or forget. I had the signature Flower Facial treatment which is £85. However there are a whole menu of treatments available. To find out more about the treatments or to book an appointment call 0207 409 9870 or visit www.fenwick.co.uk/spa-services-bond-street W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 25 // O C TO B ER 2014

What was your route into make-up? It was strange as I never really planned on becoming a make-up artist. Make-up was something that I really loved from a very young age, but not something I ever thought I would be lucky enough to be able to pursue a career in. I remember being fascinated watching my mum do her make-up when I was a child and I always thought how beautiful she looked. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to wear it myself. I grew up in Bury, Manchester, and make-up artistry was never something that was an option throughout school and college; academic subjects and University were considered the natural progression. As a result, I left school to study Psychology at Leeds University. It was whilst I was there that I bought my first MAC products and I remember being mesmerised by the stunningly beautiful girls. I couldn’t stop staring at how perfectly applied and immaculate their make-up was, and I remember thinking “I want to be able to do that”. The idea of being a make-up artist was something I could never shake off and – after graduating from university and moving down to London with the intention of pursuing my career in Psychology – I suddenly found myself studying at the Jemma Kidd Make-up School. Afterwards I worked and learned my craft on the MAC counter. I’m really not sure how it happened but it did!

At this time I also started freelancing and working on weddings and occasion make-up; painting all the faces I could for a couple of years, learning and constantly being inspired by all the amazing make-up artists around me. Although I loved what I was doing, I knew that my dream was to work in the fashion, TV and music industries, so I started to build my portfolio by testing at every opportunity I could with different models, photographers and stylists, as well as assisting some incredible make-up artists. I remember the excitement and adrenaline (and terror) of the first day I got booked for a TV job with one of the clients I still work with today. I still feel that excited about my work, eight years on, and I truly love every day in this industry. I’ve never looked back.

One product you never leave home without? My Make Up by HD Brows Eye & Brow Palette. I’m brow obsessed so I need this with me at all times. The best thing is that it’s multipurpose, so it’s perfect for creating and maintaining perfectly defined eyes and brows. Each palette includes a highlighting shade, two brow shades, wet/dry carbon-black definer and a setting wax. How do you feel the industry has changed since you first started? The industry has changed dramatically. From the advances in digital photography and social media, right through to the way cosmetic brands develop W W W.T WO -- M AGA Z I N E.CO M I S S U E 25 // O C TO B ER 2014

their products, it has evolved and adapted so much, and it’s constantly changing. I used to study images in magazines and wonder how the make-up artist created the looks and what products they used. Now, thanks to social media, this information is accessible in an instant and, in many cases, there are also videos on how to create the look which is a massive evolution. Nothing is a secret anymore; we have access to so much information it’s incredible, and although I feel that this access can take away a little bit of the magic, I think it’s great in terms of forcing everyone to keep innovating and pushing the boundaries of creativity. As an in-demand artist in the industry, how do you find time to relax? Working in this role means you never really know when you are going to get time to relax, so when the opportunity is there you really have to make the most of it. I love going to the gym, shopping (mostly for make-up) spending time with my boyfriend (as he usually just sees me running in and out of the house with different kits at crazy hours of the day), seeing friends and family and of course eating and drinking, which is probably one of my favourite pastimes. Most of all though I love to travel, and though big trips are usually restricted to Christmas time when the industry goes quiet, I love visiting new places and spending time on the beach.

You are Creative Director for HD Brows, how did that come about? I was lucky enough to meet Nilam Holmes-Patel (CEO and founder of HD Brows and Make Up by HD Brows) five years ago when I was doing the make-up on her wedding day. We just clicked. We share a brow obsession and a love of making people look and feel beautiful. We realised we worked with many of the same clients and had a mutual respect for each other’s work. Meeting was a total coincidence, but we’ve been really close ever since. A few weeks later I attended the HD Brows training course, which was incredible and has benefited me so much as a MUA. From then on we became good friends and continued to work with each other on a regular basis. Nilam had always spoken to me about evolving the brand from brows and developing a make-up range, and asked me if I would be interested in helping her develop it when she did. Obviously it was an incredibly exciting opportunity and I jumped at the chance to get involved; developing a range from start to finish has always been a dream of mine. We then found ourselves mixing colours, playing with texture, trialing and testing product after product until we eventually launched our capsule collection of 76 products in March 2014.

What makes the range, Make Up by HD Brows, so unique? We launched the range of 76 premium beauty products to respond to the needs of salon owners and beauty therapists and have created a capsule collection that encompasses everything a MUA needs to create the styles their clients want. Products sit within brow, eye, skin, lip and accessory categories and each product is cased in luxurious, high-gloss packaging. What’s great about the range is that it allows salons to offer the HD Brows service alongside a make-up line totally tailored to their skin type and style. Looking good really is at the heart of the brand and the range is all about beautiful make-up and flawless products that suit every skin tone and style. Longevity is key – whether it’s a working girl or a model on a shoot – looks need to last. What’s great is that the range is backed up by education, and the four-day Professional Artisty Course offers attendees the skills to master and perfect professional make-up techniques that can help take their career to the next level, leaving them as accredited make-up artists fully proficient in the Make Up by HD Brows range.

GLOWING SKIN Fashion week always heralds that time of year when Vogue says “out with the old, in with the new”. If you’re like me, you get a little lost at this time of year and don’t know what direction to go in. My advice would be to ditch the bold trends and go with a trend that never goes out of fashion – beautiful skin.
MARC JACOBS SS15
Every show from Temperley to Erdem showcased fresh, sporty skin. Lucia Pieroni described this season’s skin trend as “illuminated gorgeousness”, whereas Lisa

Eldridge described her Temperley offering as “sporty, athletic chic with glowing skin to die for.” Nothing says fresh skin more than when Francois Nars sent the models down the Marc Jacobs catwalk with “absolutely no make-up whatsoever”. So is it time to throw your make-up bag away? As most of us need a little help, there’s no chance of us doing that just yet. Instead here’s how to get the most gorgeous glowing skin. The amazing thing about this trend is that it’s quick and easy – your skin should look like you’ve been running or out walking the dog in the cold. Loads of moisturiser will give you a head-start and then use something like Laura Mercier secret camouflage concealer in the areas where you need a little help. Apply Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Powder Pink to your cheeks and lips to give a flushed look and lashings of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector on the high points of the face to get that “illuminated gorgeousness” look that Lucia talks about. Brush up your brows and apply a coat of mascara and you’re good to go.

ola from the white isle of Ibiza, Espania! It may be the smallest in size of the three Balearic Islands of Spain but Ibiza shines as its largest star. The parties and clubs are renowned among an international celebrity crowd but yet its many hidden gems of restaurants and beaches mean that you can visit year after year and never go to the same place twice. I spent a lot of time during my career working and living on the ‘Scorpion Island’ and recently ventured back for a visit. Early in my career, during 2001, I spent a summer season working in Ibiza as a make-up artist for a club night called
104

Manumission (meaning ‘Freedom From Slavery’) They had a gang of 15 show girls who promoted the club in costume on the streets and danced in the club every Monday night. It was an excellent training ground for working with speed as I had just over an hour to get all of the girls made up for the night. A lot of glitter was tossed around that summer and my party trick learnt during that time still remains applying a pair of false lashes flawlessly in a fast moving vehicle in the dark). Over the years I’ve returned many times for work including shooting editorials and filming an episode of MTV’s Plain Jane there too. This evolving since the early days of the millennium. When I first started working there I was
hard pressed to find anywhere to buy good cosmetics, now stores such as the Makeup Up Store and MAC have opened branches on the island. I have also discovered exciting pop up preening stations at a couple of the island’s best beach clubs. The Blue Marlin (www.bluemarlinibiza.com), Beachhouse in Playa den Bossa (beach side of Hotel Club Bahamas). Blowout Ibiza (www.blowoutibiza.com) is a hair and make-up stand where you can get your hair and make-up fixed up for a night of dancing on the tiles. A great idea for the island as so many of the beach bars transform from a sunbathing
scene to an evening fiesta. A quick 20 minute fix up and BAM! you’re ready to go. Blowout have a menu of very chic hair styles to choose from and all of the cosmetics used by their artists are top quality professional brands. The stylists I met who worked at the stands were an eclectic mix of artists from all over Europe who all work professionally in the winter at Blow Dry bars or freelance in their home countries. The finished outcome of services provided by Blowout pop ups are definitely on par with anything you’d find in London or New York.

Some of my favourite spots to check out when visiting Ibiza are: La Brasa, located on Carrer Pere Sala 3 in Ibiza Town. It’s a magical restaurant perfect for a romantic meal and the paella is simply mouthwatering. With their open roof garden that’s filled with flowering trees, you can be forgiven for feeling as though you’re in an enchanted forest. Space is located in Playa den Bossa and is the mothership of nightclubs. A must for anyone with a love of electronic music. on a recent trip I popped in with a friend ‘for an hour or so’ and ended up dragging myself out at 6am. Yep, it’s that kinda’ place! www.spaceibiza.com The beautiful old port of Ibiza Town boasts so many bars and restaurants nestled side by side. Grab a chupito (a shot) of the local tipple, a Spanish 52% proof aperitif called Hierbas. Try the shuttle boat that motors along to the port of Talamanca. You’ll spend the journey gaping at the million dollar yachts that line the harbour. Es Vedra is a legendary, mysterious rock island off the southwest coast of Ibiza. of the lost, sunken city of Atlantis. As you near the rock, your mobile or watch may go haywire along with compasses due to the island being the third most magnetic spot in the world! My tip to enjoy Es Vedra at its best would be to spend the day sunbathing on the golden sandy beach, Cal D’Hort, then watch the sunset behind this mythical rock, glass of rosé wine in hand. If you live for dance music and like the idea of a DJ stage and pool just outside of your hotel room then Ushuia Beach Hotel is the place for you! Not overly recommended if you are looking for a rest and relaxation but definitely for
the peeps looking for a party palace. www.ibiza-spotlight.com/ushuaiahotel Don’t forget to protect your skin and add a little TLC to your beach bod whilst being exposed to the sun… Luxury Face Oil by Glycelene is a face oil that firms and reduces inflammation. Gleam Body Radiance by Melanie Mills is an all-in-one make-up, moisturiser and glow for body and face. WHAT IS RADIO FREQUENCY? THE MOST FREQUENT QUESTION I HAVE HAD THIS MONTH IS TO EXPLAIN RADIO FREQUENCY, THE NON INVASIVE WAY TO TIGHTEN SKIN. SKIN THAT IS LOOSE AFTER WEIGHT LOSS OR NECK AND FACIAL SKIN THAT IS SHOWING THE WRINKLES OF SUN AND AGE! IT CAN EVEN BE USED FOR FAT REMODELLING AND INCH LOSS. Skin laxity occurs with natural aging and is caused by diminished collagen production. At the same time, there is a reduction in the production of hyaluronic acid in the skin. Whilst normal aging starts to show itself in the late 30s onwards, it is also seen in those where the skin has been over stretched for some time, e.g. pregnancy and weight loss. It’s a cruel twist of fate that after all of the hard work of dramatic weight loss one can be left with loose hanging skin that is unsightly and affects self esteem and takes away from the massive achievement of the weight loss. Radio Frequency is a well established method of generating heat in the skin tissue. This heat can either be directed at the dermis which is close to the skin surface to cause skin tightening, or be directed deeper to remodel fat resulting in inch loss. It makes sense therefore that both applications can be combined to see inch loss and then tighten the skin over the area. A controlled electrical current is applied to the skin and natural resistance generates heat in the underlying tissue. The tissue is heated to 40-45 degrees and does get warm but is bearable and the results are worth it!

At the skin surface this causes the collagen in the skin to contract and tighten and at the same time stimulates new collagen growth over time. When aimed deeper the radio frequency is absorbed by the fat cells which die and are absorbed via the bodies own metabolism. Because Radio Frequency uses an electrical current it can be performed on any skin type or pigment without risk – unlike lasers. Radio frequency can be applied in various different ways and there are many machines on the market. The machine I use in my clinic is 3D Lipo. It is definitely a brilliant addition to the tools we have to halt the march of time across our skin and delay that visit to a plastic surgeon and the longer one can avoid the knife the better!
