Alien Gear Cloak™ MOD OWB Holster By: Sal Palma
Alien Gear introduced the Cloak™ MOD holsters in 2016 if memory serves me. Three years later, I decided to review it only because it consistently gets excellent reviews. So, I said to myself: “Let me see what the Alien has accomplished.” I found out, and the answer is versatility. I guess the best way to describe the Cloak™ MOD OWB holster is to call it a system, a highly customizable one at that. It is the best cure for a growing number of holsters in your collection. The Alien Gear folks had their thinking caps on when they decided to create a multi-platform holster system where simply changing the holster shell lets the owner convert to a different pistol – brilliant! This holster will save you oodles of cash; especially for those who rotate their CCW platforms. There is no other OWB holster on the market that delivers anywhere near this level of flexibility. But, that alone does not arm the buy switch. The Cloak™ MOD has an interesting architecture that needs to be discussed before I tell you all about its excellent retention and other points of excellence.
Removing the holster shell is a simple matter of unscrewing its four retaining hex screws. Once that is done, you expose what Alien Gear calls a thermo elastomer retention membrane. This membrane adds friction aiding in retention and ensures that the weapon does not contact the spring steel backing plate.
Behind the retention membrane is a flexible steel plate. This “spring” steel plate is both thin and sharp; it is also responsible for the bulk of the pressure applied against the weapon. Fine-tuning the holster’s retention is a matter of loosening or tightening the holster shell retention screws.

read this as a design problem; it’s simply a matter of personal preference. Alien Gear Holsters has done an excellent job of creating a next generation OWB holster. Earlier in the review, I described the Cloak™ MOD holster as a system because it is the underpinning of a multi-pistol arrangement adaptable from paddle to belt slide or drop leg attachment. Its flexible steel score delivers exceptional retention and overall holster rigidity. It is an extremely well made product, with a life time guarantee selling at $47.88. The availability of additional holster shells at the $17.00 price point makes the Cloak™ MOD a no brainer. Alien Gear Holsters has earned all of its outstanding reviews, so stop accumulating holsters and let Alien Gear beam you up to the next level of open carry holsters! -SP
Booth the belt slide and paddle are adjustable for cant approximately 15°. In this review, the holster shell is for Walther’s PPQ SC. The fit is astonishing and one could almost say “painted on.” I prefer to wear an OWB holster with a belt slide; it gets the pistol closer to my body but in this review, I experienced an interesting issue that I’ll detail. I carry the PPQ SC with a fifteen round magazine, which adds more weight at the grip. That additional weight causes the holster to cant outward and away from the body. I tried a variety of gun belts and all exhibited the same problem. I tried attaching a spacer along the lower edge of the belt slide to see if that would help and that did solve the problem. Do not
