300BLK SBR
SIG SAUER ELITE PERFORMANCE AMMUNITION 300BLK SBR By: Sal Palma SIG’s objective was to produce and eco-friendly round capable of delivering a high degree of terminal effectiveness when fired from a barrel shorter than 9 inches.
In the 1990’s J.D. Jones, founder and C.E.O. of SSK Industries introduced the multipurpose 300 Whisper. J.D. used a variety of bullets yielding supersonic and subsonic variants. In 2009 Robert Silvers, AAC’s1 Director of Research and Development was approached by military customers to develop what would prove to be a chambering capable of double duty. AAC worked with Remington who subsequently commercialized the 300 BLK, which was ultimately approved in 2011 by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI). Today there are over 100 companies manufacturing the 300 BLK round for military and commercial use. Creating a 300 BLK round capable of a high degree of performance in a very short barrel rifle was a task taken by Sig Sauer who introduced its 300 BLK SBR in February of 2019.
SIG’s 300BLK SBR is loaded with a 120 grain jacketed hollow point monolithic copper bullet designed for a 1.8X controlled expansion. Sig pushes that load out of a 6 ¾ inch barrel at 1,897 feet per second. Short barrel rifles have their own peculiarities and it is not uncommon to encounter a failure to feed or failure to chamber a round so that was the central focus of my evaluation. The first thing I noticed was that SIG’s 300BLK is a hair longer than Remington’s UMC supersonic 300 BLK.

One of the challenges I faced in putting this review together was the availability of a 6 ¾ in. barrel. The closest, I was able to get locally was a 7 ½ inch barrel. Therefore, it’s reasonable to expect a higher muzzle velocity.

I fired 10 rounds in the following series but ended up deleting a shot that measured at over 4,400 fps which was clearly a chronograph error? 2019-0910_13_16_46

So, what does the added 0.07 inches mean? First and foremost, how well does the round fit in the magazine. Will the added length keep the round from feeding consistently and reliably? In this review, I did not experience a single failure to feed or difficulty in loading a magazine.

I did not pull a bullet to physically measure the bullet length, so it’s certainly possible that the added 0.07 in. comes from a shallower seating depth, but it’s unlikely. The most probable reason for the added length is a slightly longer bullet. If that in fact is the case, SIG’s bullet will have a higher ballistic coefficient (BC), and bullets with higher BCs are more efficient in flight and flatter shooting.

SIG SAUER ELITE PERFORMANCE AMMUNITION 300BLK SBR The average muzzle velocity over the nine shots was 2027 fps at a standard deviation of 15.4 fps. The data supports that SIG Sauer’s 300BLK SBR is a quality load. Something else worthy of mention is the relatively small amount of a muzzle flash. Short barrel rifles are notorious for a large amount of muzzle flash. SIG doesn’t publish their recipe for its 300 BLK SBR, but I have to believe the secret of its reduced flash signature is in the powder they chose to use.

I have to believe that SIG had government customers in mind when they developed their 300BLK SBR, its performance was both impressive and flawless. If you are driving a 300BLK short barrel rifle I can think of no better choice than SIG SAUER’s 300BLK SBR. Give it a

I ran my range session firing at a 50 yard target from my backpack and using an EOTech holographic sight with excellent results. Over the 60 rounds fired, there was no obvious indication of stringing, all shots grouped nicely. There were no failures to chamber, extract or eject.
