arrows in exchange for the much more sensible and very accessible shooter facing rotary switch.
In 2021 SIG’s Electro-Optics Group introduced the ROMEO 7S, a new version of the company’s highly regarded ROMEO 7 enclosed red dot sight. The 7S began arriving at store shelves in April of this year, and in this writer’s opinion, one of the best, if not the best, value in red dot sights on the market. At a modest M.S.R.P. of $219.99 for the red dot version and $249.99 for a green dot, the ROMEO 7S offers features found only in much higher priced competitors and gives nothing up in the process. I’ll start with its optical clarity.
Excluding the off position, the dot illumination control rotary switch provides 2 night vision positions and 9 day light setting.
Lower priced red dot sights are quite often dark with poor reflective surfaces so a couple of issues are characteristic. First, poor light transmission that adversely impacts target acquisition. Second, a poor quality lens coating reduces red dot contrast so you end up with a starburst effect aggravated if the shooter suffers from any amount of astigmatism, the ROMEO 7S enhances accuracy with its very crisp and sharply focused 2 MOA red dot. Sig designers took the KISS approach with the 7S project doing away with the up and down

SIG SAUER ROMEO 7S The sight is powered by a single AAA battery providing up to 50,000 hours of battery life. The RMO 7S battery use frugality is something you find in its much higher priced competitors; SIG’s MOTAC feature contributes significantly to that performance. The acronym translates to Motion Activated Illumination and functions by detecting any motion, or its absence. SIG literature indicates that after 120 seconds of no motion the MOTAC feature powers the 7S down; then immediately upon sensing motion powers up the sight at its last used illumination setting.
I went ahead and tested MOTAC in my unit and found that the sight powered down in 2 minutes 11 second, but to be fair, let’s shave 2 seconds to correct for my human response time. The 2 minutes and 9 seconds I measured are close enough to give SIG’s 120 second figure a pass.

The ROMEO 7S is adjustable for elevation and wind in 0.5MOA increments. Both wind and elevation turrets have excellent tactile providing 50 MOA of adjustment, for a total travel of 100 MOA. I found no interaction between elevation and wind adjustment. SIG ships the sight set for 1/3rd co-witness but also include the screws needed for absolute cowitness. I found the default configuration perfectly acceptable and using the BUIS was not impaired in the slightest.
SIG equips the sight with see-thru front and rear flips. I would prefer to see an objective ARD with a flip for the ocular lens. The flips do protect lens surfaces when they can be kept closed. With an overall length of 3.2 inches, the ROMEO 7S is a compact sight that won’t take up a great deal of rail space. It will only add 7.7 oz. SIG SAUER ROMEO 7S to your chosen platform; however, in spite of its compactness and light weight, the 7S is built like a tank and IPX7 water resistant. SIG’s Electro-Optic Group has a homerun on its hands; their only challenge is going to be keeping up with demand. The REMO 7S, in either red or green dot variants, delivers a level of performance and robustness that is unsurpassed by similarly priced offerings and matched by many of its high end competitors. Paired with SIG’s Juliet 3 micro magnifier, the ROMEO 7S delivers a professional fire control system at a very affordable price. -SP
