I want to start this review with a brief introduction of SSP Eyeware. The Washington State company has been manufacturing some pretty impresssive eyeware for over ten years. They even produce custom designs with the corresponding branding.
literally. Shooting while wearing the typical progressive prescription glasses, it was necessary to elevate my chin inorder to keep the front sight in focus. Needless to say, after a while you tend to fatigue optically and physically. SSP’s Top Focal™ design took a rather innovative approach to eliminate that problem by moving the bifocal to the top of the lens resulting in a more natural head position while maintaining a sharp focus on the weapon sights.
The obvious optical benefit is not where the story ends. Optical clarity and color fidelity are excellent. The Top Focal™ Ultra Kit frame is extremely comfortable more so than higher priced offerings.
SSP captured my attention after seeing an ad in which they connected with shooters who are also bifocal wearers. In addition to being extremely comfortable, Top Focal™ glasses are also very light coming in at just a hair over 1 oz.
These glasses will not dig into your nose. In fact, after a few minutes of wear they seem to disappear. SSP uses nose pads that rotate and are implemented with detents; I wish some of the magnified optics I’ve reviewed had that level of tactile feedback.

The Ultra Kit ships with two sets of Amber, Clear, and Smoked lenses. One set has the magnifier at the top of the lens; another with the magnifier at the bottom of the lens. Lenses are also ANSI Z87.1+2015 compliant meeting stringent standards for safety glasses. SSP offers the Top Focal Ultra Kit in a plethora of magnifications 1.25 through 3.00.
