STREAMLIGHT’S TLR-7 SUB SIG By: Sal Palma
Streamlight responded to this level of diversity in the subcompact space with its recent introduction of the TLR-7 SUB line. The SUB line is available for SIG rails, Glock and 1913 Picatinny accessory rails. My review will introduce the TLR-7 SUB SIG. The subcompact pistol plays two roles, conceal carry and home defense; they’re particularly popular with women who generally have smaller hands. If you’re carrying the pistol, you may not need a lighting accessory but when you get home, mounting a light to your subcompact for home-defense makes a great deal of sense, and makes your pistol a more effective defensive tool.
Today’s popularity of compact pistol frames for conceal carry and even home defense have been a challenge to accessorize. Gun manufacturers have implemented several strategies ranging from mil-spec Picatinny rails system to proprietary designs, and just about everything in between. SIG SAUER’s P365XL is but one example of a proprietary accessory rail which makes perfectly good sense given that SIG SAUER has achieved a level of vertical integration uncommon to the broader industry. Bottom line, SIG wants its customers to purchase SIG accessories.
So, the ability to easily attach and detach a weapon mounted light is important and the TLR7 SUB SIG meets that requirement with a uniquely flexible mounting system. Another important feature of tactical lighting is output and beam geometry. The TLR-7 SUB features 500 lumens of well collimated light capable of piercing darkness with an abundance of peripheral illumination. The TLR-7 SUB illuminates every corner of a room. In addition to a bright well collimated beam, the light features a user activated strobe using Streamlight’s 10 tap system. Ten quick taps of

the ambidextrous switch and holding on the tenth will enable the strobe function. The light is powered by one CR123A battery that delivers a 1.5-hour runtime. Streamlight includes a safe off feature to prevent accidental activation. To use the feature, rotate the bezel counterclockwise to a detent position. The 2.58-inch aluminum housing is O-ring sealed and rated IPX7 so it’s waterproof to 1m for 30 minutes. There are several companies that approach the task of accessorizing your subcompact pistol by attaching a Picatinny rail to your receiver, but none as elegant as a highperformance illumination tool made specifically for your off-the-shelf P365 and P365 XL subcompact. Streamlight’s TLR-7 SUB SIG is such an offering, and at a street price of $135 you won’t find a better solution. -SP
