In this review, I’ll introduce one of XS’ newest offerings, the DXT2 Big Dot Orange. I’ll begin dismissing any notion that these sights are target sights, the DXT2 are combat sights and unquestionably the best I’ve had the opportunity to shoot. What’s a combat sight? Succinctly stated, it’s an aiming accessory that presents an immediate sight picture and ensures both accuracy and speed of engagement. With the introduction of the DXT2, XS Sight Systems unquestionably owns the space.
One of the many things I love about this industry is its genuine fount of innovation; nowhere on the face of this earth is this more visible than in the United States of America, and stands as a testimony to our free market system. XS Sights Systems is the personification of that innovative and pioneering spirit. Jon Pastusek, its CEO, has every reason to be proud of his Texas Company. XS traces its beginnings back to 1996 where their focus was on outstanding hunting sights. Fast forward to 2020 and you see a company that is a leading domestic supplier of weapon sights and also licensed to handle radioactive material.
Coming out of your holster, the front sight immediately grabs your eye. You don’t have to fiddle around with “putting the drop in the bucket,” line up and center the front sight post or align three dots, simply draw, dot the” I” and shoot. DXT2 sights use a patent pending glow dot that absorbs light and glows in low light levels before it is dark enough to see the tritium. The DXT in its product name stands for Defensive Express Tritium and feature tritium inserts front and rear.

In bright daylight, you won’t lose the front sight post; XS’ BIG DOT is like a traffic light. If you’re like me, aiming is going to take a little getting used to. Humans are creatures of habit, so when I first started shooting the DXT2 I instinctively used the center of the big dot which is wrong. When XS tells you to dot the “I”, they want the big dot to be completely visible and sitting on top of the V-notch rear sight. Proper sight alignment will vary depending on target range; however, XS recommends that at 25 yards and more, you hold the top of the big dot at the desired point of impact. If your target is at 15 yards and closer, cover the desired point of impact with the big dot.
Shooting with the DXT2 sight was an excellent experience. I love the fact that there is but one vertical line on the rear sight, so lining up front and rear is extremely fast and intuitive; contributing to the speed of engagement.
In darkness, the DXT2’s tritium inserts kick in to provide a very visible sight picture. These sights are designed to be installed with what XS calls the file to fit method. Installing the front sight on the FN509 platform required removing some material to ensure a good fit. Installing the rear sight required just a little filing to achieve a snug fit. Once adjusted, tighten two set screws and use the threadlocker supplied - a very robust arrangement. XS cautions about using a sight pusher tool but I had no problems at all front or rear. The DXT2 Big Dot sights are ideally suited for use under any lighting condition. The design provides an extremely fast sight picture needed for defensive shooting, military and law enforcement application. All of these situations are stressful and quickly engaging the target means you get to go home that day. The DXT2 Big Dot sights are available directly from XS Sight Systems at $132, a modest price based on performance alone; now throw in a warranty for life and you have a great deal. -SP Copyright 2020, Twobirds Flying Publications, All Rights Reserved
