OAKDALE ZONE 1: NEW SPEED BUMPS, LIGHTING
Brakes put on speeding AVRIL FILLIES
T
he last couple of months Oakdale Zone 1 has been a hive of activity. Not only were three speed bumps erected in St James Street, Ashtown Road and Sydney Street, lighting has also been installed in the Vlei Park greenbelt. “The speed bumps were deemed necessary to deter motorists from speeding down these roads, especially in Sydney Street where a crèche and school are located. Since the installation of the speed bumps, traffic has calmed down and speeding has been deterred,” said Kenny Dinwoody of the Oakdale neigbourhood watch.
“In the Vlei Park greenbelt, the City of Cape Town has installed lighting in the form of six light poles. This should increase visibility in this usually dark area. Hopefully, this will assist in curbing illicit night time activities in and around the greenbelt,” he said. Not everyone is happy with the lighting of the greenbelt though, with some residents saying Vlei Park, situated between St James, Sydney and Kingsmead streets, should have been fenced in instead. While workmen were digging the trenches for the cables, a complaint was received stating that if it was to be fenced in, it would deter vagrants, drug addicts, pedestrians

and motorists from loitering and littering in the greenbelt. Leonore van der Walt, councillor for ward 2, said the request for lighting was submitted by the Oakdale NHW in 2018. “This request was, therefore, submitted to the ward 2 committee for consideration and subsequently tabled in the concept ward allocation budget for 2019/20. In the last quarter of 2018, the relative line department said the lights could be funded from their budget and would be installed in the 2019/20 financial year which commenced on 1 July,” Van der Walt said. During February this year, the Oakdale NHW enquired about the timeframe for the
installation of the lights in Vlei Park. “I responded that I was informed that the lights would be installed this financial year as soon as funds (from the line department) become available. “This is the process taking place currently,” she said. The Oakdale NHW also requested that Vlei Park be fenced in. “This request has been taken into account in the drafting of the 2020/21 ward allocation budget which is currently taking place. There are a number of requests for other parks to be fenced in as well. This process has not been finalised and needs to be approved by the City Council,” Van der Walt said. V To page 6.
