WARD 3 : CITY APPOINTS TRAFFIC COP
Traffic safety improves AVRIL FILLIES
T
he public in Blomtuin, Chrismar, De la Haye, Shirley Park and the rest of ward 3 are noticing a difference in traffic safety in the area after the City’s traffic services has appointed one of their own to service the area. “Following the proliferation of complaints relating to traffic safety, speeding within residential areas and taxi offences, it was decided to appoint a full time traffic officer. “The taxi offences include ratrunning, taxis off-route, poor driver behaviour and unlicensed and unroadworthy taxis. “We decided that instead of having a rent-a-cop or law enforcement officer, the ward may be better served by placing the full time traffic officer in the ward,” Brendan van der Merwe, the ward councillor, said. “The cost of this traffic service would also have to be funded from ward allocations at a cost of around R278 000 per annum. “Although this is more than a third of the annual ward allocations budget that is a mere R850 000 and where there are many projects competing for a slice of this amount, it was agreed that this would be a good investment of our annual allowance,” he said. According to Van der Merwe no
one has been appointed yet as a full time traffic officer but the department availed one of their own to do duty in the area. Already the public is noticing a difference and several members of the public have already commented on social media about the increased visibility of traffic services within the ward and the good work and noticeable results that are achieved. “The officers will work early shifts and late shifts to ensure that they cover the alternate morning and afternoon peak hours and they will enjoy the support of the other enforcement agencies and their colleagues who do regular taxi enforcements and vehicle checkpoint operations. “Weekly statistics are also provided to the councillor to track service levels and these show high rates of enforcement. “This additional enforcement we hope will act as a deterrent to taxis ignoring the rules of the road, especially that they stay on route and in line with their issued permits and do not cut through residential areas,” Van der Merwe said. He also expressed that the full time traffic officers will address the increased complaints relating to speeding in residential roads and also complaints relating to the public ignoring stop controls in residential streets.

Different is cool
Hannah and her sister Aliza Kiroglu strut their stuff on the catwalk on Saturday. The fourth annual Different is Cool fashion show was hosted by Daniel and Friends Fund at Brackenfell Primary School. There was hardly a dry eye as almost 40 differently-abled children stepped onto the runway with their siblings to enjoy the spotlight in their specially designed outfits, designed and sponsored by The Foschini Group. Families were also treated to a free outing to Bugz Playpark. PHOTO: CANDICE RODRIGUES
