EFF READY FOR COURT: ‘CITY IS CHILDISH AND FOOLISH...’

City wants to sue EFF DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he EFF said they were ready to meet the City of Cape Town head on in court to defend a civilian action for damages to be brought against them by the City, after the protests in Brackenfell. During an interview with TygerBurger, EFF Western Cape chair, Melikhaya Xego said the City by pursuing such a lawsuit, acted in a “clownish, foolish and childish manner”.

K C A BL DAY I R F + +

“The EFF had applied for a permit to protest, something neither the Cape Party did who was also present, nor the protesters who marched to parliament against farm murders earlier this year. At our first protest we were assaulted by people who didn’t at all apply for a limit to their gathering, but nothing happened to them,” he said. Executive mayor of Cape Town Dan Plato on Friday said the City was intending a civilian suit against the EFF to recover costs for damages done to municipal property. He also encouraged private property owners who

suffered damages to join the City in the lawsuit. “Preliminary reports indicate a fire engine was torched, roads and traffic lights were damaged, and a field was set alight by EFF protesters. Car dealership windows were smashed at the corner of Paradys and Old Paarl Road, with private vehicles damaged due to stoning and several shops looted,” Plato said in a statement to the media on Friday 20 November. He said the City is in the process of determining the costs of damages to municipal property.

Plato strongly condemned the violent actions and violation of agreed conditions on the number of protesters and the EFF’s own commitment of non-violence. This, after Judge Siraj Desai refused to grant an urgent interdict against Friday’s protest on the basis that there would be no violence. “The EFF made it clear that they have no regard for the rule of law, and the City manager has indicated to me that senior officials are assessing the cost of the damage to city infrastructure,” said Plato. Nine arrested after violent protest THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo The Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) protest that sought to address reports of alleged racism at Brackenfell High School on Friday 20 November, was filled with episodes of stun grenades, teargas and water cannons being used on protesters by police. Early that morning before the march began in an attempt to disperse the marchers the men in blue fired stun grenades and water cannons after an altercation. This did not stop the red berets from carrying out their mission. Mziwoxolo Gaduka, a supporter of the party says the act was a way to discourage them from addressing the issue. “We will not leave this matter unsolved, ra-

cism cannot and will not be tolerated in South Africa,” he says. He says acts by police were shameful. Addressing the crowd, the party’s secretary general, Marshall Dlamini, called for protesters to show discipline to ensure that the party’s message is communicated. He also said protesters should not feel intimidated by the police. During his address, chaos erupted and Dlamini was forced to abandon his post. This interruption was brought about by a (white) man who walked up to the podium and asked him (Dlamini) if he could say something. The request was not well received by the red berets as some of them started punching the man. Police quickly stepped in to remove the man from the violent crowd. Stun grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons were used once again to disperse the crowd. The party says a genuine engagement was not intended from the police’s side. “It was clear from the onset that no genuine engagement could be had with an ar-

rogant police force that resolved that it will protect the interest of racists at all costs (sic),” a statement by the EFF read. “Despite countless stun grenades and rubber bullets unleashed on our members, the committed forces of the EFF refused to retreat.” The party says it will return to the school if teachers, the principal and governing body involved in organising the function, which allegedly no black learner was invited to, are not removed from their positions. This came after the (white) parent who had organised the matric party, last week already had denied all allegations of racism saying all pupils, white, brown and black, were invited. Provincial police spokesperson, Capt FC van Wyk says the protest action necessitated police action to maintain law and order and to disperse the riotous crowd. “Eight protestors were arrested on charges of public violence. “One member of the public was injured when he tried to disrupt the protest. He was arrested on a charge of incitement,” Van Wyk says.

The Economic Freedom Fighters say they will return to Brackenfell High School if teachers, the principal as well as members of the governing body who were involved in organising an apparent whites-only event are not removed from their positions.

According to Xego, the police were biased and “chose the side of the racists”. “When the police saw the crowds were bigger than anticipated, they should have managed and controlled it better, but instead they fired smoke grenades at the marchers,” Xego said. Plato said he wants to assure the public that the City will not tolerate lawlessness and the EFF will be held accountable for the damage caused. “Where private property has been damaged during protest action, I want to encourage property owners to alert the City so that our legal team can assess the feasibility of private property owners joining the City’s case against the EFF,” he said. “The City respects the rule of law, including the right of citizens to assemble provided this is done peacefully and with respect to the rights of others.” Plato said while he could not speak for the police, Friday’s violation of protest conditions would need to be taken into account by police in future and should form part of the record going forward. He commended the efforts of the police, metro police, law enforcement and traffic officials, as well as the contributions made by the local neighbourhood watches and community policing forums. “Through these efforts, an extremely volatile situation was kept largely under control, protecting the public and limiting damage to municipal and private property.”

‘Lykplant’ in volle blom DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

’n

“My voorganger moes haar geplant het.

Art therapy to support local volunteers DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Community volunteers who were active during the Covid pandemic will in the new year benefit from a social support project, to counter the emotional toll of seeing community members in hardship, fear of infection, political tensions and the stigmatisation of working with at risk populations. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Stellenbosch approved R86 000 in funding for Brackenfell/Kraaifontein Community Action Network (Can), for the purposes of debriefing volunteers. Psychology researcher, lecturer and cofounder of Can Brackenfell/Kraaifontein, Lynn Hendricks says this creative debrief-relief project will centre around online counselling sessions and art therapy. “The main objectives will be to provide fatigued volunteers with a space in which to debrief about the experiences of volun-

teering in their communities during the pandemic,” she says. “It will provide the psychosocial support they need to strengthen community support forums.” Furthermore, the project will provide a platform on which to document through art, media and text, the lessons learnt by community volunteers in South Africa during a global pandemic. The central role of volunteers in humanitarian responses is increasingly recognised. Hendricks says the 2015 UN Resolution of Integrating Volunteering into Peace and Development: the plan of action for the next decade and beyond, underlines the role that volunteers can and should play in the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, including in humanitarian action, peace building and conflict prevention. “Volunteers work in difficult, complex, and sometimes dangerous environments. They help people during and after crises, providing them with practical help, un-

Cyber fraud on the increase

derstanding and social and emotional support. They may find themselves comforting survivors in the initial phases of shock and grief, and they often work long hours in challenging conditions,” she says. Moreover, most of the volunteers in the Can groups are themselves members of affected families. Hendricks had pinpointed the need to create such a debrief. “Using art as a medium of expression is a useful tool when debriefing and thinking through events that one may not have had the time to process yet. Art can be used as a springboard for sorting through memories and telling stories that may reveal messages and beliefs from the unconscious mind. The volunteers have taken on a large amount of strain and they need time to work through their experiences with one another,” she says. This opportunity will be rolled out to all Can volunteer groups in the Cape Town area and all creations emanating from the project will be made available online.

The Durbanville police warned residents of an increase in internet fraud cases in the Durbanville area. In one case a Durbanville resident bought three kittens to the value of R102 000 over the internet, and never received his kittens, says Capt Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for Durbanville police. “A case of fraud is being investigated by the police. Before doing any business on the internet, make sure the seller’s credentials and history is legitimate. “Vehicles are also being sold or bought over the internet and the suspects are using Uber drivers to fetch the vehicles. This makes it difficult to trace or arrest the suspects. People should be wary if a transaction seems dodgy,” he says. Rhode warns people against doing business over the internet to refrain from paying money to unknown people before they have not checked the person’s credentials. He says people must go into sellers’ profiles on online sites such as Gumtree. “People must also check at their own bank if the funds were actually paid into their account, regardless if they have received a notice of payment by SMS,” he warns.

‘Toorbos’ is SA’s ‘Oscars’ entry

ené van Rooyen’s Toorbos has officially been selected as this year’s South African entry for the highly coveted Best International Feature Film Award for the 2021 Academy Awards. The film, which is an adaptation of renowned writer Dalene Matthee’s 2003 bestselling novel of the same name, is currently on circuit in South African cinemas. Competition was tough and the South African Academy Awards Selection Committee, comprising professionals from various fields of the filmmaking value chain, evaluated several submissions from 2 to 5 November at Nu Metro cinemas across the country. It is only the third South African entry by a female director for the Academy Awards, since 1989. “It is an honour for our entire team that Elani Dekker as Karoliena Kapp in René van our film has been selected to represent Rooyen’s adaptaption of Dalene Matthee’s South Africa. This is an amazing tribute and opportunity for our Local Film Industry,” says producer, Dries Scholtz. Starring Elani Dekker in the lead, Toorbos investigates the uprooting of a young forest woman during the time of the final forest dwellers of South Africa’s Knysna forest of the 1930’s. It tells a story between the intimate relationship of an initiated “forest woman” and the heart of the forest and how it becomes an obstacle in her experience of the man she loves. Director René van Rooyen explains how Toorbos not only highlights the importance of finding the balance in the tug of war between the masculine and feminine, but also in the urgent need to heal our broken world, by reconnecting to nature. “The submission gives the film spotlight in the global arena, an ab- Director René van Rooyen behind the scenes. solute dream come true for the project.” PHOTOS: FATHOM MEDIA

Business robberies, burglaries on the rise DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

R

obberies and burglaries at businesses in Brackenfell have seen a sharp increase as indicated in the second quarterly crime statistics as released by the police last week. The numbers reflect crimes reported between July and September of 2020, and compared in percentile to the same period in the previous year. During this time 10 robberies and 45 burglaries at businesses were reported, respectively a 25% and 74% increase. Home burglaries, however, decreased by 9% with a total of 67 cases reported, but six home robberies were reported during this time, four more than the previous year. Three murder cases were registered three more than the previous year - and 10 attempted murder cases - seven more than the previous year. Common assault decreased by 18% with 34 reported cases and 24 robberies with aggravating circumstances were reported,

two more than the previous year. Continuing to be a problem in Brackenfell, 105 thefts from motor vehicles were reported; albeit 19 cases less than the previous year. Furthermore, 21 motor vehicles were reported stolen. A total of 10 sexual offences were reported, seven more than the previous year. A total of 21 drug arrests were made as a result of police detection and 12 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Brackenfell station commander, Col Jakobus Marthinus, says police acknowledge the increase in serious crimes for the last quarter. “We believe that the lockdown palyed a role in the rise of house robberies, in the fact that many residents were confined to their homes whereas they would normally be at work. We have operational measures in place and will continue to actively attempt to reduce these figures. Marthinus says he is very appreciative of the strong cooperation between police and security companies like Bolt Risk Management, SJC Security, ADT, Basset Alarms, Titanium, Capital Security and C-Max..

Attempted murder on the up in WC DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierore Attempted murder cases in the Western Cape have surged upwards with 9% with 1 097 cases between July and September 2020, according to the second quarterly crime statistics released by the South African Police Service. The numbers contained are compared in percentile to the same quarter in the previous year. Kraaifontein (59), Elsies River (39), Delft, (35) and Mfuleni (32) all feature in the national top 30 police precincts for this crime. With 752 incidents, house robberies saw an increase of 8.4% with 58 cases more than in the same quarter last year. Again Kraaifontein (41), Delft (38) and Mfuleni (30) reached the top 30 list for this crime countrywide. Truck hijackings too saw an increase of 33.3% with 12 more incidents bringing the total for the quarter to 48; and carjackings a slight decrease of 3.3% with 838 incidents. Delft (59) and Philippi East (59) were both

listed in the top 30. The murder rate saw a slight decline of 0.9% with 1 013 murders in the province. Both Delft (57) and Kraaifontein (38) topped the red list, with a 31% decline in Delft, but a 58% increase in Kraaifontein. House robberies increased by 8.4% with 752 cases and break-ins declined by 10% with 2 578 cases. Minister for community safety in the province Albert Fritz, said a five-year analysis shows that provincially murder cases increased by 25.7% (207) from 806 in 2016/17 to 1 013 in quarter 2 of 2020/21 financial year whilst nationally it increased by 4.2% (207), from 4 900 in quarter 2 of 2016/17 to 5 107 for the same period. However, there was a decrease in the last two years – owing largely to the Operation Lockdown in gang affected precincts in 2019 and the Covid lockdown in 2020. Additionally, the top 10 police stations in the province accounted for 48.5% of murders in the second quarter of 2020/21 and murders in these 10 stations increased by 2.1%.

Eskom warns of electricity scams Eskom has been inundated with requests to conduct investigations into scams that purport to sell “cheap electricity” vouchers. This scam is perpetrated through promotions being advertised on social media sites on Facebook and Twitter and WhatsApp. According to a statement released by Eskom last week, these unscrupulous individuals dupe people into paying for this “cheap electricity” through the use of electronic funds transfers such as e-wallet and money market. Thereafter the scammers disappear and leave the customers destitute and out of pocket. “Eskom is working with several law enforcement agencies to trace and prosecute these unscrupulous individuals. We want to urge the members of the public not to

Eskom has urged the public not to fall prey to these crooks. “Co-operation with the law enforcement agencies has already resulted in some arrests and prosecutions are ongoing in the Eastern Cape and in Mpumalanga provinces. Eerste seksuele medisyne-spesialis in Kaap MARITA MEYER

D

Ek is nou

Mutts show off ‘butts’ at market A

“Mutts with cute butts pa(w)rade” is being presented at the night market of the Durbanville Pet and Craft Market on Friday 4 December. The market is held from 17:00 to 21:00 on the grounds of the Durbanville Presbyterian Church on the corner of Louw and Hafele streets (behind the police station, next to the fire station) in Durbanville. This annual night market has been a tradition in Durbanville for the past 35 years. The mutt parade will start at 18:00 just after registration. All participants will receive a certificate and prizes sponsored by Barking Mad Pet Products, Jock Dog foods, Roxy Living with Diabetes, Pixie Proof and crafters. Just after the parade, a fun auction will be held in aid of the charity organisati-

ons. Afro Beat Drumming Circle will be having drumming sessions throughout the evening. The Durbanville Craft Market is one of the oldest craft markets in the Cape and the only monthly market focused on animals and charities – all fees are applied towards charity. “Although we are not affiliated to the Durbanville Presbyterian Church, we are very grateful for being able to use their premises every month in exchange for donating all fees to use for their charity and welfare outreaches,” says Anni Theron, chairperson of the craft market committee. There are seven animal charity organisations which are permanent members, having stalls at no charge at the market, to do fundraising for their respective organisations. This includes The Hope Foundation for

Cats, Imagine Animal Dreams, Capetonians against Animal Abuse and Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre. The Lucky Lucy Foundation will present microchipping at only R100 per pet. “In our craft section, only handmade crafts made from a home base qualify, giving visitors the opportunity to browse through unique gifts at the market. With the focus on pets and their well-being, we try to offer something different at every market for the benefit of pet owners. Unfortunately we are an outdoor market and events are dependent on weather,” she says. New crafters are welcome. Covid-19 precautions will be in place. V Contact Anni on 083 331 8658 or durbanvillecraftmarket@gmail.com or visit Durbanville Craft Market on Facebook for more information.

Screening concerns at hospital RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

T

ygerberg Hospital confirmed that it was made aware of a complaint that screening for Covid-19 symptoms are apparently not conducted at one of its entrances. TygerBurger recently received a complaint from a resident in Kraaifontein, informing the newspaper about the matter. The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, suffers from cancer and visits the hospital’s cancer unit at the Gene Louw Building regularly for check-ups. Her last visit was on Friday 6 October. “I got there at 05:45 and at the entrance

there was nobody on duty to screen patients,” the resident says. She brought this to the attention of some of the staff, but claims that it seemed no one was bothered by it. “How would they know if infected persons are entering the facility? And with a warning of a second wave, is this not negligence on the part of the hospital? Are cancer patients not also high risk? At all the other entrances temperatures are taken, but not at the cancer unit.” The patient says she has also tried calling the hospital to lodge a complaint, but claims no one answers the phone. Laticia Pienaar, hospital spokesperson, confirmed last week that the hospital had been made aware of the matter and ex-

plained the current procedures taken at the facility. “At the peak of the pandemic, screening was done by staff members at the Gene Louw Building, but when the numbers were declining and visitation was still restricted, the staff members were withdrawn to go back to their clinical areas. “The screening was left to be done by the security guards but there were challenges in that screening is not the core function of the security guard. We are in a process of securing the services of the volunteers to assist with screening at the entrances,” Pienaar says. The 68-year-old patient says she is now wary of going for her next check-up on Tues-

day 1 December. “I have breast cancer, as well as multiple myeloma so my immune system is heavily compromised. I do not know if anyone in authority has been made aware of this nonscreening,” the patient says. Pienaar however explained that the current screening process for patients who visit the cancer facility is done on a booking system. “When they arrive at the unit, they must be checked for the wearing of masks, and then screened for temperature and hand sanitiser applied at the main entrance. When they get to their specific clinics, they must be fully screened for temperature and symptoms by the clinical staff,” Pienaar explains.

SLICE OF LIFE

Journalist bags VJOY for opinions Samantha Lee-Jacobs (28), a journalist at TygerBurger’s sister publication in the southern suburbs, People’s Post, has bagged the national award in the opinions category at the 2020 Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards (VJOY’s). The awards ceremony was held virtually on Friday 20 November where Lee-Jacobs represented the Western Cape region after winning the regional opinion category award at the regional virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 11 November. The awards seek to recognise journalism excellence in the country across 12 categories. In its 19th year, the competition received a record number of 1 300 entries. Lee-Jacobs’s win was accredited to three columns published in both People’s Post (“Please just stop asking ‘when’ ”, “Breaking silence”) and TygerBurger (“Think twice before driving drunk”). The judges’ citation is: “Entries in this category covered many issues, mainly political but also the economy, sports and even religion. Many of these entries – while being well-written – offered views that were common in society and did not bring anything fresh to the debate at either a national or provincial level. Our national winner displayed a skill taking seemingly small issues and relating them to some of society’s important concerns such as sexual assault, peer pressure and drunk driving.” Lee-Jacobs says: “In writing these columns, I was able to share a bit of myself, my personal life and my own experiences with some of society’s social ills with our readers. This was also the first time I had ever spoken out about a personal encounter with sexual assault which empowered me to help others. As community journalists, we have a special role to play in connecting with readers, while sharing news and views that matter. Having won awards for telling people’s inspiring stories before, it was especially amazing and a great honour to be awarded for the vulnerability in sharing my own story.” Thulani Magazi, People’s Post editor, praised Lee-Jacobs for the achievement. “Well done, Sammy. This wonderful accomplishment is an excellent stamp of approval on what community journalism is all about. You have consistently showed and proved that community journalism is truly alive by regularly collecting awards,” says Magazi. “Walking away with a national award against some of the country’s finest writers and newspapers is a huge achievement. We are truly proud of your achievement as it not only puts your name on the South African media landscape, but our beloved People’s Post too. Congratulations! Continue doing what you do best and love most.”

Brackenfell violence, an issue for serious deliberation Any cause, no matter how worthy, will be destroyed if addressed by the EFF because of their proclivity for mayhem and violence. This protest, about a private function for matric learners from Brackenfell high school, on racial and economic grounds, should have been dealt with by people with sober minds and a clear vision for our future, and not by a bunch of political opportunists. Gatherings organised on racial and socio-economic lines merely perpetuate the myth of racial superiority and looks disparagingly on people, who are not economically well off. The fact that the function was organised for about only 20% white students of the matric class suggests that people of colour were excluded along with whites who could not afford the function. This decision by the parents to organise a

function on racial and economic grounds is a shame because it will make children who were excluded feel like outcasts. This myopic decision will have a damaging impact on the matric class of 2020 in Brackenfell High. It will be a year that they wouldn’t want to remember. The ideal would have been for all the learners, regardless of race or socio-economic status, to celebrate together. The violence that erupted in front of the school is lamentable because, firstly, it must have affected the learners, who were busy writing their exams and because they were not entirely responsible for organising the function; secondly, the violence ignored an issue that needed the attention of every thinking citizen that desires to live in a truly non-racial and nondiscriminatory society. The issue, as I understand it, is that a group of parents

organised a private celebration for matriculants, outside the school grounds on racial lines and invited the educators to the function, without any consideration for the feelings of the learners that were excluded, regardless of their colour. The response from the school was that they had nothing to do with organising the function, so they felt exonerated by the racial tone of such a gathering. The MEC for education, Debbie Schaeffer, came out in defence of the educators, who attended the function because she felt that the educators were unaware that the celebration was based on racial lines. This defence is utterly cras, unless the educators were totally blind. Such a response from the MEC could only be explained either on her ignorance about the impact such racial gatherings will have on the

Fisantekraal neglected I am a community keeper in Fisantekraal and my main focus is service delivery and crime prevention. Since 2015 I am the moderator and administrator of the Facebook page, Greenville Fisantekraal Community, and a WhatsApp crime prevention group. My daily tasks and interaction with my community did not start yesterday as I have been a police officer for 18 years and know this community since the 90s and uphold the safety of my neighbours. During this time I have noticed a lack of services and law enforcement agencies in and around my community. Likewise, people always reach out to social media to raise their concerns and as a fellow member I have tried my utmost to assist them.

During lockdown I have noticed the flooding of requests for assistance with Covid-19, Sassa grants, Eskom, police misconduct, City of Cape Town water-related sewerage problems, potholes and general enquiries. I always do proper research and give feedback. We have been targeted with a flood of crime related incidents such as murder, house robbery, armed robbery, contact crimes and even a case in which the mutilated body of a woman was found. Just a month ago, Fisantekraal was pointed out as the area with the highest crime rate in Durbanville in TygerBurger. Our people get robbed daily en route to their workplaces. The City’s electricity department refuses to render

minds of young and impressionable learners when they grow up to be adults or that she sees nothing wrong in racial gatherings. On the other hand, she could be pandering to the salivating appetite of her racist followers. If she is guilty of any of the above, she should resign. The MEC, the educators who attended and the school must understand one thing, and that is: children are not born racist, it is ingrained into them from their bigoted and racist parents at home. The question that should be on the top of everyone’s mind is: if children of all colours learn and play together, as part of the school’s and department of education’s creed, why did they have a celebration on racial and socio-economic lines? This question must lay heavily on the minds of children of colour, as well as their parents. EV RAPITI

How is this possible? People are attacked and they give feedback such as that we as a community must get our act together. Must they use violence? Almost 50% of the streetlights are not working. In phase 3 (of Greenville) the new house owners move in without any streetlights. Boonop is Diemersdal se nou reeds veelbe-

Summer safety tips for parents T

he summer holidays are around the corner and with the weather getting warmer, many families may be heading outdoors - whether at home or elsewhere - to enjoy activities together. Unfortunately, many common summer activities end up in accidents within a few seconds, which may have a lasting traumatic impact on all. “Most accidents that put children in the emergency room during the summer and festive season are preventable,” says leading paediatrician at Cape Gate Mediclinic and Paed-IQ BabyLine CEO, Dr Iqbal Karbanee. “Unfortunately, many common and fun family activities during the summer months can quickly take a turn for the worse and end in injury. Others can have lasting and traumatic consequences for families,” says Karbanee.

Child safety at home Examples of such activities include a trip to the beach or the local swimming pool, a home-based braai where there is a wood fire or paraffin burner that can fall over and cause a fire, or even bicycle or scooter rides. The ChildSafe Initiative in South Africa suggests that 80% of child injuries occur in or around the home and while many children are hospitalised, hundreds more end up visiting the emergency room and thousands more go to clinics and doctors. Karbanee says it is difficult to count the cost of treating preventable accidents in children, whether as once-off hospital visits or the longer-term costs of prolonged treatment and rehabilitation. It can cost up to as much as R500 000 when skin grafting or plastic surgery is required, which can be as a result of a burn.

The Child Gauge Report 2019 suggests that more than 8 000 children die every year as a result of injuries. About 5 000 of these are accidental or unintentional, with leading causes being road traffic injuries, burns and drownings. Globally, it is estimated that one million families lose a child to a preventable injury every year. “Reducing the number of preventable accidents is therefore a healthcare priority that should be observed by all parents and caregivers, especially during the summer months,” says Karbanee. Trampolines are great ways for kids to use up excess energy, but they are simply too dangerous. Children’s bones are still developing and experiencing an injury whether through a broken or fractured bone can set them back developmentally. Serious injuries related to the brain or spine can occur. If you are gifting your child or children a trampoline over the festive season, or if you already have a trampoline at home, there are ways you can lessen the risks associated with the equipment. Always make sure there is adult supervision and only one child at a time should be on the trampoline. No children under the age of six should be allowed to jump and it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that strict rules are enforced.

if these places are busy. Make sure you and your child have a plan should they become separated from you and how they can look for help. Older children should be able to memorise your cell number. Drownings are known as silent killers because children are unable to shout for help and they are among the most common preventable accidents that can happen in seconds. A drowning can happen in a few centimetres of water. Life jackets are a must if you want to boat, canoe, or jet ski with your kids or even just spend time near a body of water. Never leave a child unattended near water and consider hiring a lifeguard to keep watch over the kids in the pool if you are having a gathering or party with several children in attendance. Dog bites are a major cause of preventable traumatic injury in children. Too often what starts as a peaceful or exciting family day out turns into a horror story involving a dog attack, with the victims mostly being children who can sustain severe injuries. Teach your children to not go near a dog who is off leash or without a muzzle, and to not put their face close to the dog’s, even if it is a trusted family pet. If the dog runs up to the child or a family on the beach or elsewhere, children should not reach out to pat the dog, even if it looks cute. Wood fires are common in South Africa during summer. They are dangerous to children if unattended, as children are nat-

“Unfortunately, many common and fun family activities during the summer months can quickly take a turn for the worse and end in injury.” - Karbanee

Visiting outdoor facilities Shopping centres, amusement parks or even the beach are fun outings for families to enjoy. However, it can be easy for a parent to be separated from a child especially

urally curious and may want to see what happens when they throw things into the fire. The smoke also poses a danger to young respiratory systems as they are still developing, even more so if the children suffer from asthma or allergies. Put fireplace tools and accessories out of a young child’s reach and keep a fire extinguisher on hand. It may seem obvious, but never leave children unsupervised with candles, paraffin burners or outdoor wood fires. If an accident does happen, never apply any butter or other food onto a burn.

Outdoor activities Playgrounds and parks are good to get kids to play outdoors, but be careful of hot slides and poorly maintained equipment that may have rusty nails or sharp hooks. Hot equipment can burn bodies and sharp objects can tear skin, which may require tetanus shots. Also remember to put sunscreen on your child of no less than SPF 50 when spending time outdoors. Bikes, scooters, skateboards and other wheelie toys are fun for children but should not be used near moving traffic. Traffic-related accidents are among the highest preventable accidents for children. Protective gear like helmets or shin or knee pads can go a long way in preventing injuries, whether only scrapes and bruises or more severe. “And if the worst happens, you don’t know what to do and you are struggling to assess whether a doctor’s visit or a trip to the emergency room is indeed necessary, it may be a good idea to make use of a telephonic advice service with trained nurses that can quickly and cheaply help you assess the severity of the situation,” concludes Karbanee.

Tips in securing your dream rental property T

here are currently more rental properties on the market than there have been in many years and it is quite understandable that many prospective tenants believe that they will easily be able to secure their preferred property once found. However, in many instances this is simply not the case. “This is especially true in the lower to medium price ranges in sought-after areas which offer convenient proximity to good schools and amenities,” says Lorraine-Marie Dellbridge, rentals manager of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty in Cape Town’s southern suburbs. According to Dellbridge, there are several things prospective tenants can do to nudge themselves to the top of the list and to avoid

delays that could cost them their dream home. . Ensure you are admin-ready ahead of time. You will need three month’s bank statements, a certified copy of your ID, Fica documents (proof of address) and references from previous landlords where possible. . Request the application form prior to viewing. Have it completed and with your documents ready to hand in on the day if you like the property after viewing. . Have the necessary funds ready. Ensure that you have enough money available to pay the required deposit and, if applicable, the application fee. If there are two candidates of the same calibre, the one with his/ her admin and funds at the ready will invariably get the property.

. Be mindful of your credit rating. If possible, do a prior check to ensure your credit score is clear. But also bear in mind that there are also other factors that can count against you, including having little or no credit because it’s difficult to determine your credit payment pattern and reliability. . Be on time. Make sure you arrive on time to view the property. Don’t breeze in 30 minutes late with a smile and a casual “sorry”. Besides being rude and annoying, the agent is bound to wonder if you are as cavalier about paying your rent on time. . Understand that most agency leases are standard and law compliant. When you start wanting to make changes, it can make agencies and landlords nervous, especially when it comes to significant clauses like those per-

taining to the Consumer Protection Act which enables a tenant to exercise their right to terminate the lease early. . Understand that if there is more than one applicant, the landlord might choose the one that is being less of a hassle. If it’s complicated early on, a landlord may fear that a tenant is likely to become troublesome. . Remember that, unless otherwise stipulated, you’re viewing the property to take it as it is. Barring items of repair that may make it unlivable such as roof leaks or broken toilet leaks, by submitting an application, you are applying for the home as you viewed it. . Give your references a heads-up. VFor more information visit www.sothebysrealty.co.za.

KILLARNEY: KARTING TITLES TO BE DECIDED

All geared up for finalé I

n spite of lockdown stealing a significant amount of its season, the Rotax Max Western Province Karting Championship will reach seven rounds out of the initially planned eight at Killarney’s season finale Saturday 28 November. Among this year’s classes there will be a mere formality after a few standout performances through the season. Others will, however, go right down to the line. Among the latter, the baby Bambinos arrive at Killarney with little Aiden Beaumont all of three points clear of young Kai van Rensburg in the title chase. So that one can go either way, considering there’s a three-point difference between a race win and a second. And there are three races on Saturday. It’s just as close between Sebastiano Human and Siyabonga Ntuli for third, and Liam Wharton and Michael Danks for fifth too. Stepping up to u.11 Micro Max, Reese Koorzen already has one hand on that championship, but its tight for second. Joshua Smit holds an eleven point advan-

tage over Jordan Wadeley. African Open winner Keagan Beaumont will be the kid to watch though — the African Open winner has come on strong and will be out to secure the title fourth over Dale Hobbs and Sabelo Ntuli. It would appear that Reza Levy and Ethan Deacon need to do something silly to squander their u.13 Mini-Max 1-2. But on closer inspection, third placed Joaquin de Oliveira is a clear danger man. He missed the first two races, so will not have to drop any of his results and all his points will count. His rivals must still drop results so that brings de Oliveira into striking distance. Joshua Smit, Jude Stuart and Jordan Wadeley will also be in that chase. Kyle Visser has all but wrapped up the WP u.15 Junior Max title. The fight there is for second between brothers Andre and Kyle le Riche and Matthew Wadeley. Ethan Stier and Troy Dolinschek are danger men there as they too, do not drop any points after missing championship rounds. Senior Max however promises to be a thriller.

Sebastian Boyd is in control of the DD2 category and is expected to wrap up the premier class title over Jason Coetzee. PHOTO: HEINRICH SAUER
