EFF demands Supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) makes their way to the municipal buildings in Kraaifontein during a peaceful protest on Friday 27 November. Houses equipped with toilets, equal job opportunities for all and working street lights. These are just some of the demands made by the EFF to the local council in during its planned protest. This was after the “red beret brigade”, led by regional chair Unathi Ntame, visited the police station to demand, among other things, that the next station commander to succeed Brig Gerda van Niekerk not be white. The next stop was at the day hospital where Ntame alleged that statuses of HIV-positive people receiving antiretroviral treatment at the facility are being exposed without their consent as their patient files are of a different colour to other patients. The group then proceeded to the Kraaifontein municipality. At each of these institutions, Ntame gave representatives five days to respond to the demands made. This followed protests in Brackenfell in the previous weeks. PHOTO:JACO MARAIS

B’FELL HIGH ALUMNI: SAFE SPACE NEEDED TO TALK ABOUT RACISM

Learners threatened DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

I

n an open letter to the school on social platform Change.Org, Alumni of Brackenfell High School last week implored any learner who has suffered racism at the school to be allowed to come forward to dis-

close their experiences in a safe space. This follows after Siya Ntuntwana, who matriculated at the school in 2016, and Glody Nkanga who matriculated at the school in 2017, both received death threats after speaking out against racism at the school. According to these learners similar threats were made to other learners and a

bounty of R10 000 placed on their heads. Nkanga is currently an international peace ambassador at the Global Peace Chain. “I nearly got expelled in my last year because some girl claimed that I tried to stab her, just because I was black and without a shred of evidence,” Nkanga said in an interview with TygerBurger.

After the unfounded accusation, a security manager at the school pulled him out of class and did a body search looking for the alleged knife. “There was nothing to find, but yet I was suspended without a wink, or asked what really happened. V To page 2
